et another reshuffle of the federal cabinet has occurred, wherein former adviser on finance abdul hafeez shaikh is now the minister of finance, former interior minister Ijaz shah is now the minister of narcotics control, and former railways minister sheikh rasheed is now the minister of interior. meanwhile, azam khan swati has been made federal minister for railways. this the fourth federal cabinet reshuffle since the pakistan tehreek-e-Insaf (ptI) government came into power three years ago. rasheed met prime minister Imran khan and thanked for believing in him. Both leaders also discussed matters related to the new portfolio. reportedly, there were three potential candidates who were after the slot of interior minister, including pervez khattak, fawad chaudhry and rasheed. according to details, pm Imran had decided to remove minister for Interior
Brigadier (r) Ijaz shah after his poor performance and reports of his deteriorating health condition. fawad had lobbied for the slot but could not convince the prime minister. the prime minister’s close aides advised him to appoint either khattak or rasheed as both the senior politicians could better handle the upcoming long march and protests. this reshuffling comes shortly after the ruling of the Islamabad high court (Ihc) on december 7, the Ihc had ruled that special assistants and advisers to the prime minister were not members of the cabinet and therefore, cannot be part of cabinet proceedings. the judgment, from a division bench comprising justice aamir farooq and justice Ghulam azam Qambrani, noted that article 93 of the constitution allows the prime minister to appoint up to five advisors and conferring of a federal minister status on an advisor is “only for the purpose of perks and privileges” and “does not make the advisor a federal minister as such”. while hafeez has been appointed as

federal minister for finance, more appointments are likely to be made soon. abdur razzak dawood, syed zulfiqar Bukhari, dr faisal sultan, dr shehbaz Gill, Usman dar, nadeem Babar and others would also be appointed as federal or state ministers. furthermore, some other advisers may also be sent packing as the federal government has decided to comply with the court decision. It is pertinent to mention here that hafeez, who was sworn in for a period of six months by president dr arif alvi, is not a member of the parliament. however, according to article 91 (9) of the constitution, any individual who is not part of the parliament can be a minister for six months. In order to become a minister again, the unelected member should be elected to the national assembly (na). following the appointment, the premier discussed opposition’s resignations, long march and the upcoming pakistan democratic movement (pdm) jalsa in lahore being hosted by pml-n on december 13.

Imran urges following eco-friendly measures for protection of tourist areas prime minister Imran khan, while appreciating the boom in the tourism sector of pakistan, emphasised the need to “safeguard these sites” in order to prevent them “from turning into concrete jungles”. he said this while addressing a ceremony in Islamabad after witnessing an agreement signing between khyber pakhtunkhwa (kp) government and world Bank for ecotourism. the country is seeing a boost in tourism for the first time in history, the premier said, adding that this unplanned tourism has had the adverse effect of badly affecting tourism spots. the premier stressed the need to follow eco-friendly measures in order protect the areas and the tourism industry. the prime minister emphasised that the model of development of tourist resorts should benefit the local population and provides livelihood opportunities to them. "It will make our tourism sector sustainable and help in preserving the tourist spots," he added. while lamenting the mismanagement of areas such as murree, naraan and nathia Gali, pm Imran appreciated the steps taken by kp in waste col-
lection and management and recycling. “the initiative taken by khyber pakhtunkhwa government today which involves waste collection, management and recycling activities will go a long way in protecting our picturesque sites,” he said. speaking on the occasion, the world Bank country director najy Benhassine said that the world Bank Group is "keen to continue supporting khyber pakhtunkhwa and punjab in their efforts to provide employment opportunities to the youth
in the tourism sector." the pm agreed, adding that these measures would both preserve the sites as well as create employment. pm Imran also said that pakistan's northern areas also hold potential for skiing, which is still untapped, adding that just like switzerland earns about $80 billion through their skiing resorts per year, pakistan can also achieve great success if such resorts are established here. earlier on august 20, the premier had expressed commitment to transform kp into a tourism hub. earlier, talking to kp chief minister mahmood khan, who called on him at his office in Islamabad, pm Imran had lauded the steps taken by the provincial government to boost tourism. he had felicitated the chief minister over launching sehat sahulat programme for entire kp residents. pakistan tourism development corp (ptdc) statistics revealed that at least 3.2 million foreigners visited pakistan in 2019, out of which 17,000 were on tourist visas. In january, forbes listed pakistan among best 'under-theradar trips of 2020'. NEWS DESK
India and around the world. “pakistan has been informing the world about India’s activities for a long time. the country also launched a full-fledged campaign against pakistan with regards to the financial action task force [fatf],” he said. “Indian network is working to consolidate more power and improve the image of India and damage the reputation of rival countries so that it can ultimately garner more support for itself from the international community,” fm Qureshi said. “we urge the Un human rights machinery […], the Un high commissioner for human rights […] as well as human rights experts to take a serious look as to how a prestigious platform such as the human rights council was thus misused,” he said. the minister stressed the need for the Un to look into the government-owned organisations being used for “spreading fake news and hate”. he also urged the eU to look in the matter, asking them not to “let their legal institutions and frameworks be abused in such a blatant manner”.
