akiStan muslim leaguenawaz (pml-n) supreme leader nawaz Sharif on thursday contacted pakistan democratic movement (pdm) president and jamiat ulema-e-islamfazl (jui-f) chief maulana fazlur rehman and said that the victory of pdm candidates in the Senate elections is certain. talking from london, nawaz told fazl that the pdm has a numerical majority over the ruling coalition in the Sen-
ate and all pml-n senators will vote for the alliance’s joint candidate, Gillani, and abdul Ghafoor haideri, as pdm’s candidates for Senate chairman and his deputy respectively. according to sources in the pml-n, nawaz and fazl also discussed a strategy for the long march due in the last week of march. Sources said that the pml-n supremo assured the jui-f chief that the pml-n will fully support the pdm candidates and the opposition alliance would be victorious is certain. polling for the election will be held on friday in the Senate and the mem-
bers of the upper house would elect the future chairman and deputy chairman of the upper house. Gilani and haideri are backed by pdm parties, including pakistan people’s party (ppp), pml-n, jui-f, awami national party (anp) and others. while the ruling coalition is supporting the incumbent Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani, is being supported by ruling pakistan tehreek-e-insaf (pti), pakistan muslim league-Quaid (pml-Q), muttahida Qaumi movement-pakistan (mQm-p), balochistan awami party (bap) and others.

the pakistan Stock exchange (pSx) extended its fall for fourth day in a row, with the benchmark index losing 1,000 points intraday on selling pressure. Global equity markets, on the other hand, showed a positive trend, whereas crude oil inched up from the previous close; wti crude price appreciating 1.41pc to $65.35 while brent crude price rising 1.40pc to $68.87 (as at 3:20pm pSt).
“after starting the day on a positive note, the benchmark index succumbed to selling pressure later in the session, with several stocks hitting lower circuits. however, periodic buying contained losses to less than 1,000 points by the end of session,” a report issued by arif habib ltd read. “although the federal board of revenue gave a clarification on the withdrawal of corporate tax exemptions, investors remained perturbed on anticipation of levy of additional taxes; leveraged investors closing their positions at market rates rather than meeting the margin requirements.” SUMMARY: recording its intraday high at 43,891.00 (+199.32 points) earlier in the day, the benchmark kSe-100 index nosedived to its low at 42,688.20 (-1,003.48 points) during the second half. it settled lower by 911.92 points at 42,779.76. among other indices, the kmi-30 index plunged 1,605.08 points to end at 70,629.22, while the kSe all Share index dropped 665.47 points, closing at 29,372.61. the overall market volumes appreciated from 363.20 million shares in the previous session to 404.97 million shares (+12pc). average traded value, on the contrary, declined 16pc, from
$134.6 million to $112.8 million. unity foods ltd (unity -7.46pc), trG pakistan ltd (trG -7.50pc) and hum network ltd (humnl -6.34pc) led the volume chart, exchanging 34.89 million, 27.09 million and 21.43 million shares, respectively. Sectors that drove the benchmark index south included banking (-144.77 points), oil & gas exploration (-104.23 points) and tech & communication (-100.82 points). among the companies, trG pakistan ltd (trG -108.46 points), oil and Gas development Company ltd (oGdC -69.82 points) and lucky Cement ltd (luCk -41.69 points) dented the index the most. Shedding 6.33pc from its total market capitalisation, the refinery sector ended as the session’s worst performer, with attock refinery ltd (atrl -7.50pc), pakistan refinery ltd (prl -7.47pc) and national refinery ltd (nrl -6.57pc) ending in the negative. meanwhile, in a notification to the exchange, lucky Cement ltd (luCk -1.65pc) informed that it has commenced its commercial operations with effect from march 10, 2021, at the Greenfield cement production facility in Samawah, iraq. the said cement production facility is a joint venture with iraq’s al Shamookh Group.

the daily number of new coronavirus cases in the country during the last twenty-four hours rose to the highest level in seven weeks, according to the data provided by the national Command and operations Centre (nCoC) on thursday. pakistan reported 2,258 new Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours, the highest daily tally after january 20 when the number of new coronavirus cases remained 2,363. the total number of infections rose to 597,497 with these fresh cases. according to the national nCoC, the country’s death toll climbed to 13,377 after 53 more people succumbed to the deadly disease during the last 24 hours. meanwhile, 1,276 patients recovered from Covid-19 during the same time period, taking the total recover-
ies to 566,492. the coronavirus positivity rate has shot up to 5.36 per cent. according to coronavirus statistics shared by the government, about 42,164 coronavirus tests were conducted across the country in the last 24 hours, out of which 2,258 people were tested positive. according to the nCoC, the total active Covid-19 cases across the country are 17,628, whereas no active case was reported in Gilgit-baltistan (Gb). the highest ventilator occupancy was recorded in lahore with 39 per cent occupied, followed by islamabad at 37 per cent, peshawar at 24 per cent and multan at 21 per cent. the nCoC further reported that the highest number of oxygen bed occupancy in the country was in Gujrat at 94 per cent followed by peshawar at 39 per cent, islamabad at 36 per cent and lahore at 29 per cent. about 42,164 Covid-19 tests

were conducted in the last 24 hours out of which 9,964 were conducted in Sindh, 17,174 in punjab, 6,704 in khyber pakhtunkhwa (kp), 6,863 in islamabad, 405 in balochistan, 341 in G-b and 713 tests were conducted in azad jammu and kashmir (ajk). out of the 13,377 total reported deaths, there have been at least 4,448 deaths in Sindh, 5,662 in punjab, 2,129 in k-p and 516 in islamabad. about 202 deaths were reported in balochistan, 104 deaths in G-b and 316 in ajk.
the nCoC also reported that a total of 9,360,202 tests have been conducted since the outbreak of the pandemic. there are about 631 hospitals with Covid-19 facilities with 2,144 patients admitted across the country, it added. meanwhile, Sindh education minister Saeed Ghani said on thursday that the Sindh government may have to impose another lockdown if coronavirus cases keep on increasing in the province.
