HE federal government, along with the Sindh government, is working together to resolve major problems of Karachi, Prime Minister Imran Khan said on Saturday after record-breaking torrential rains wreaked havoc in the port city. “The whole nation feels the pain our people in Karachi are going through. However, out of this devastation and suffering there is now a positive development as my government, along with the Sindh government, is moving to immediately act and resolve three major problems of Karachi,” the prime minister announced on Twitter.

crisis and also in the future in making of Storm Drains, Sewage Treatment, Solid Waste Management, Fresh Water Supply and Transport. Karachi and the rest of Sindh will never be left alone,” he said. It is pertinent to mention that the Centre and Sindh government have been at each other’s throats as rain spells have battered the province, with Karachi facing the major chunk of the disaster. According to media reports, at least 80 people have died across Sindh -- 47 in Karachi -- due to various rain-related incidents. On Friday, PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto had said he hoped that the Centre will fulfil its "constitutional duty" and help Sindh's economy get back on track. The PPP chairman had also directed Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah to ramp up the ongoing relief activities in Sindh. “The province should ensure timely relief to the people affected by the rains,” he had said, adding that a survey should be conducted to record the damage incurred to public and private property, The PPP chair had stated that the repairing of roads should be concluded at the earliest and they should be reopened for traffic. According to an update from the Sindh Chief Minister House, several areas in the city are still submerged in water after torrential rains began Thursday. "Rainwater has accumulated in some areas in Tower while several areas in Bath Island, Gulshani-Faisal and Clifton in the city's south district are also submerged," Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah informed the meeting, directing that those areas be cleared.

Pakistan observes 9th Muharram amid strict security KARACHI/LAHORE/ISLAMABAD STAFF REPORT

The 9th of Muharram is being observed across the country in solemnity to honour the memory of Karbala. On Saturday, processions were taken out in different cities to mourn the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him). Strict security arrangements were made countrywide, with cellular services suspended in some areas as processions to commemorate Muharram 9 were taken out in several cities. Earlier this week, the interior ministry officials had said that cellular services would be suspended in 36 cities of Punjab on the request of the provincial government. The Punjab police had also asked the Home Department for air surveillance in 13 cities — Lahore, Kasur, Gujranwala, Mandi Bahauddin, Rawalpindi, Jhelum, Sargodha, Bhakkar, Multan, Lodhran, Sahiwal, Muzaffargarh and Bahawalpur. Sindh government spokesperson Barrister Murtaza Wahab said in a tweet on Friday that cell phone services would be restricted "only be in selected areas where the Muharram processions take place on the 9th and 10th of Muharram". Cellular services were also suspended in Peshawar as part of the security plan, while

CM Murad slams KMC, others as rain-related death toll rises to 48 KARACHI STAFF REPORT

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah censured the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and other civic departments over their poor performance during torrential rains in Karachi, which caused eight more deaths on Saturday, taking the overall tally to 48. Presiding over a meeting to review the overall post-rainfall situation in Sindh at the CM House, Murad Ali Shah directed the concerned departments to pinpoint areas where the flow of water could be stopped. “If any building is obstructing the flow of water, bulldoze it whether it is public or private. We have to fix the city no matter how drastic the measures we have to take,” Shah noted. He ordered that routes of the Muharram processions should be cleared immediately and directed the concerned authorities to drain the water in areas still flooded in the metropolis. “Why are several areas in the southern district still submerged in water?” he asked. The CM said that KMC’s Urban Disaster Response Unit was not at the forefront in

cleaning up the city after the heavy downpour. “KMC's Urban Disaster Response Unit does not appear to be active. Those involved in the clean-up should be made to wear specific jackets so that the public knows that the government is working,” he said. The chief minister also directed senior Board of Revenue members to survey all the districts and to take note of them. He also directed all the district commissioners to ensure their areas were cleaned, especially drains which get choked due to garbage.

“Drains get cleaned because of the flow of water but plastic bags and mud chokes it,” he noted. Speaking about the power woes of the city, Shah said that power is yet to be restored in several areas in the city. “170 KE feeders out of 1,900 are yet to be restored,” he added. Briefing the meeting, the deputy commissioner said there was an issue of garbage collection in the Central district. “We cleaned all the areas in the Central district. All the drains in the southern district were cleaned as well,” he added. He added that low-lying areas were still flooded as all the nullahs were emptied in the Southern district, which takes time to drain. To this, the chief minister said he was aware there was not enough staff, which is why temporary staff should be hired to move the cleaning process along. Mirpur Khas commissioner told the chief minister that more than 80pc of the crops had been destroyed in Mirpur Khas and Tharparkar due to the recent rains, while water was yet to be drained from Mithi, Islamkot and other areas.

over 10,500 police and security personnel were deployed across the city for the security of mourning processions, police officials said. The spokesperson added that 1,095 officials of the Traffic Police have been deployed to ensure smooth flow of traffic along the route.
