R E S I D E N T Donald Trump s decision to reinstate the naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz may have dealt the final blow to the Islamabad Accords
The agreement assembled through painstaking diplomacy by Pakistan, Qatar and other regional partners, had offered the clearest available path away from a wider regional war That opening now appears to be closing Trump had initially permitted negotiations to continue despite previously declaring the peace process over That ambiguity allowed mediators to keep the diplomatic channel alive The renewed blockade however signals that Washington has returned to coercion at precisely the moment when restraint was most needed Pakistan has done what it could It brought parties together kept communication open and invested political capital in preventing escalation It should continue those efforts But mediation cannot succeed when the principal actors treat diplomacy as a tactical pause rather than a strategic objective
The deeper problem is the absence of coherence in Washington Trump’s confidence in Vice President JD Vance appears inconsistent, while pro-Israel figures within the administration including Pete Hegseth and Marco Rubio, have repeatedly favoured a harder line The result is a foreign policy in which competing factions pull in different directions and negotiated commitments remain vulnerable to internal sabotage Iran has hardly been a model of restraint Tehran could have responded with greater patience and maturity Yet its defiance is not difficult to understand The country has just buried its leader amid a mass public mobilisation that demonstrated support for both the regime and the late Ayatollah Under those circumstances, threats of regime change were always likely to strengthen hardliners rather than weaken them
The original strategy has failed The Iranian state has not collapsed It appears more entrenched, more defensive and more willing to absorb economic pain Continued military pressure is therefore unlikely to produce the political transformation its advocates promised Israel remains the clearest beneficiary of prolonged conflict Even as relations between Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu weaken, Israel continues to secure the strategic outcomes it seeks The United States by contrast faces higher energy prices, disrupted trade routes, military exposure and another open-ended regional commitment Pakistan must persist with diplomacy, but it must also recognise the limits of mediation without credible partners With Hormuz again under blockade and rational compromise increasingly absent Islamabad’s economic managers can no longer plan around a quick settlement They must brace for impact

IN the teachings of Islam the bonds of human society are held in the highest regard alongside the duties of worship The rights of neighbours in particular have been emphasised time and again in the Holy Quran and the traditions of the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him It is related that the Archangel Jibreel (AS) counselled the Prophet so persistently concerning the obligations owed to neighbours that the Messenger of Allah came to believe he might soon be instructed to make them partners in inheritance Such is the profound importance attached to neighbourly conduct At the level of individuals a man who finds himself at odds with his neighbour may if he chooses change his dwelling and settle elsewhere Nations however enjoy no such liberty Geography has bound them together for better or for worse and no amount of wishing can alter the map This truth was brought home to me with particular force during an international conference held
IN summer of 2024, Pakistan experienced one of the most intense heatwaves in its recent history Temperatures soared across Sindh, Punjab and Balochistan, exposing millions of people to dangerous levels of heat with little protection In Karachi alone, as temperatures exceeded 47°C, the Edhi Foundation recovered 568 bodies in just five days During the same period, Provincial Disaster Management Authority officially acknowledged only 56 heat-related deaths The difference between those figures was not a statistical anomaly It reflected the distance between the suffering ordinary Pakistanis endured and the suffering the state was prepared to recognise Two years later, that distance has narrowed only slightly In May 2026, Karachi again recorded temperatures above 44°C while Dadu reached a blistering 51 5°C, among the highest temperatures ever recorded in Pakistan Pakistan Meteorological Department repeatedly advised people to avoid unnecessary outdoor exposure More recently, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), through its National Emergency Operation Centre, issued a nationwide advisory for 13-18 July, warning of thunderstorms, heavy rainfall and continued hot and humid conditions across much of the country Such forecasts are important and undoubtedly save lives Yet for the farmer harvesting wheat, the construction worker laying bricks in the sun, the traffic policeman directing vehicles or the daily-wage labourer whose home lacks even a fan, a weather advisory offers awareness but not protection Information alone cannot substitute for resilience Heat is not new to Pakistan What is new is its intensity, persistence and increasingly deadly combination with humidity, which prevents the body from cooling itself through perspiration What was once considered an extreme weather event is rapidly becoming the new normal According to World Weather Attribution’s analysis published in May 2026 the April heatwave across South Asia was made approximately three times more likely by human-induced climate change and about one degree Celsius hotter than it would have been in a pre-industrial climate If global warming continues on its current trajectory comparable heatwaves could occur every two to three years by the end of the century For Pakistan already among the world s most climate-vulnerable countries this is no longer a distant forecast but an increasingly accurate description of the future The geography of extreme heat is also expanding Cities once considered relatively moderate are now experiencing temperatures that would previously have been regarded as exceptional This summer intense heat spread well beyond the traditional hotspots of Sindh and southern Punjab with large parts of Punjab Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan repeatedly facing dangerous temperatures before the monsoon arrived Even as the NDMA s latest advisory forecasts rainfall in many districts it
in project approvals or political speeches For decades Pakistan has built cities that are larger but less liveable wealthier on paper but increasingly vulnerable to climate extremes Solutions are neither unknown nor unaffordable From Ahmedabad s pioneering Heat Action Plan to France s post-2003 heat-health strategy Spain s workplace protections and Phoenix s network of cooling centres governments have shown that early warnings combined with practical interventions save lives Pakistan has strengthened its early-warning capacity through Pakistan Meteorological Department and NDMA but warnings alone are not enough They must be backed by local heat action plans cooling shelters emergency medical preparedness legal protection for outdoor workers accurate mortality reporting and climate-sensitive urban planning Without implementation even the best warning becomes little more than advance notice of a preventable tragedy Climate change in Pakistan has become a public health emergency Every tree cut every wetland lost and every heat-related death

that is another matter) and drawing the conclusion that Gaza should be flattened, including with nuclear weapons Gaza has been flattened, and to his dying day, Graham never showed an ounce of compassion for those slaughtered by his Israeli friends and did everything he could to support that slaughter That is, of course, also why internationally wanted war criminal – really genocidaire – Benjamin Netanyahu rushed to offer his public condolences Speaking of Graham’s obvious subservience to Israel, the senator was, unsurprisingly, also a great fan of going to war with Iran, tirelessly calling for attacking it as violently as possible He spread the Orwellian lies that Iran was about to pose a nuclear threat to the US and that its ballistic missile arsenal was a tool of reckless aggression, all to produce domestic support for yet another criminal American war Himself addicted to hiding his foul character behind a bigoted and utterly fake Christian piety, Graham compared Iran’s leaders to Hitler and called them “religious Nazis,” thereby not merely offending brave men towering above him in moral and intellectual terms, but also helping to drum up propaganda for murdering them It is an irony of history or, maybe, divine justice that he lived just long enough to see the US follow his insane and corrupt advice and suffer a geopolitically catastrophic defeat for it Yet Graham was a monster long before the Gaza Genocide and the US-Israeli war against Iran He was obsessed with brutalizing as many other countries and societies as possible He could not see an opportunity for a war and not do his worst to make it happen Graham’s record of warmongering is so extensive that it is hard to reproduce it in its entirety Just shortly before his end, he had been calling for more US violence in Cuba, Lebanon, Nigeria, Venezuela, and Yemen – apart, obviously, from his eternal compulsion to scream for, in effect, more dead Palestinians and Iranians In true American
