The court granted bail to the petitioner, Mubarik Ahmed Sani, upon providing a personal bond of Rs5,000

A press release issued by the top court addressed concerns regarding misreporting by the media stating Misreporting of a Supreme Court decision on elec-

tronic, print and social media is creating a lot of misunderstandings and giving the impression that the Supreme Court has deviated from the Second Constitutional Amendment (definition of Muslim ) and

has called for the abolition of provisions on crimes against religion This perception is completely wrong The clarification from the court further explained “In the concerned case even if the allegations mentioned in the FIR are accepted as true even then the provisions do not apply adding that in such cases Section 5 of the Criminal Amendment Act, 1932 applies, under which publication of prohibited books can be punished with imprisonment for a maximum of 6 months ”

Since the petitioner/accused had already spent more than one year in prison the Supreme Court, keeping in view Islamic injunctions, constitutional provisions and the requirements of law and justice ordered the release of the petitioner/accused on bail ” it added

HE PTI s claims that the controversial results of the February 8th elections could end up affecting Pakistan’s negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have materialised into a visible warning after the party s incarcerated founder said he will write a letter to the fund over the alleged rigging BUT COULD SUCH A LETTER HAVE ANY REAL IMPACT? It is worth mentioning that Pakistan is currently entirely beholden to the IMF to complete its debt repayments The current situation is an amalgamation of policies and decision making that transcends different governments of different political parties in Pakistan Pakistan is currently party to a ‘StandBy-Agreement’ that the IMF signed with the PDM government back in June 2023 The SBA worth over $3 billion had been signed after Pakistan and the IMF failed to successfully conclude a programme that had been marred first by the imposition of a petrol subsidy by Imran Khan’s government, and later by the bull-headed negotiation tactics of PDM s finance minister Ishaq Dar The SBA had been signed as a sort of bridging agreement that would see Pakistan through its election period so that whoever came to power could then start negotiations anew with the fund Two tranches of that $3 billion agreement have been made already But now the fund is insisting that even the third tranche of the SBA will be negotiated by the new government With Shehbaz Sharif ’s bid for the PM house all but a certainty, the fund would perhaps have felt comfortable negotiating with the same prime minister that they last left off with NOT A NEW THREAT However, Imran Khan s decision to write a letter to the IMF might cause some complications The fund craves consistency from its partner countries as a general rule One of the reasons Pakistan came so close to default during the PDM s first government was the replacement of Miftah Ismail by Ishaq Dar at the helm of the finance ministry “Ther IMF, European Union, and other organisations have their charter that says these organisations will work in a country where there is good governance For good governance a country needs to have democracy that requires free and fair elections, Ali Zafar said while speaking to the media outside Adiala Jail This is not the first time that the PTI has tried to use the necessity of the IMF programme to its advantage Back in August 2023 when the PTI had been ousted from government through a vote of no confidence, audio conversations between the PTI s finance minister Shaukat Tarin and his provincial counterparts in Punjab and KP, Mohsin Leghari and Taimur Jhagra came to light in which he was instructing them to help derail negotiations with the fund Two audio clips surfaced via TV channels and social media; in one, the man said to be Tarin can be heard guiding Punjab Finance Minister Mohsin Leghari to tell the federal government and the IMF that he would not be able to commit to a provincial budget surplus in light of the recent floods that have wreaked havoc in Pakistan In the other audio Tarin can be heard asking Jhagra whether he had drawn up a similar letter [The IMF commitment] is a blackmailing tactic and no one will release money anyway I won’t release them, I don’t know about Leghari ” says the man alleged to be Jhagra Tarin says the letter once drafted would also be sent to the IMF representative so these b******* know that the money they were forcing us into giving will be kept by us R s 2 0 0 0 | Vo l X I V N o 2 3 6 I 8 Pa g e s I Ka r a c h i E d i t i o n In par tnership with Profit fri d ay 2 3 feb ru a r y 2 0 2 4 i 1 2 S h a ' b a n 1 4 4 5 PTI PL ANS TO THROW SPANNER IN IMF TALKS g Pa r t y ’ s f o u n d e r a n n o u n c e s h e w i l l a d d r e s s a l e t t e r t o I M F t o h a l t p r o g r a m m e o v e r a l l e g e d p o l l r i g g i n g C O N T I N U E D O N PA G E 03 N O T T H E F I R S T T I M E LAHORE S ta f f R e p o R t Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Deputy Secretary General Atta Tarar has strongly criticised Pakistan Tehreek-eInsaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan’s expected letter to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and termed it heinous attempts to invite foreign interference and derail democracy They [PTI] want to derail democracy in the country [ ] Legal action should be taken against their ulterior motives to dent national economy,” Tarar said in a statement after the incarcerated former premier s lawyer announced Khan s next strategy to mount pressure on political opponents The PML-N leader said that PTI wanted to see chaos in the country which won’t be allowed The next government will have to revive the national economy and eliminate unemployment he added PML-N censures

with the IMF The credit rating agency stated that a new deal is key to the country s credit profile, and we assume one will be achieved within a few months, but an extended negotiation or failure to The IMF tactic seems to have been adopted once again Even before Imran Khan s recent announcement the PTI s current chairman Gohar Ali Khan, claimed on the 20th of February that if election results are not released under Form-45s, it could impact Pakistan’s prospects of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme Unlikely to have an impact While the letter is an inconvenience the IMF is unlikely to heed its advice As an international body the fund is not in a position to determine election results As such the letter from a former prime minister might not carry much weight However it is worth mentioning that Pakistan is going to face a tough negotiation with the fund as it is because of the delicately balanced political situation and a weakened coalition government coming into power Back on the 19th of February, global rating agency Fitch warned that the “close outcome of the February 8 polls and the resulting near-term political uncertainty may complicate Pakistan s efforts to secure a financing agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) The US-based Fitch Ratings one of three leading global rating agencies said a new IMF deal to succeed the Stand-By Arrangement (SBA) expiring in March 2024 was key to Pakistan s credit profile [ ] We assume one will be reached within a few months, but an extended negotiation or failure to secure it would increase external liquidity stress and raise the probability of default ” it said

FROM PAGE 01 The statement continued to outline CJP Isa s approach to judicial interpretation, stating that he tries to interpret all laws in accordance with Islamic rules, reasoning from the verses of the Holy Qur ’an, the Hadiths of the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) the decisions of the Caliphs and the opinions of the jurists It further clarified If one believes that there has been a mistake in a judicial decision in the interpretation of an Islamic principle or a constitutional or legal provision, then it is the responsibility of the learned people to correct it and there are constitutional and legal avenues for it The chief justice and the Supreme Court have not stopped anyone before from a review nor will they stop it now ” The statement also condemned organised campaigns against the judiciary asserting that criticism should follow constitutional avenues It warned against violating the right to freedom of expression, emphasising the judiciary s role in protecting the rights of the people in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan The controversy surrounding Chief Justice Isa’s observations escalated as several political parties in the country including Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) and Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) joined the campaign These parties actively called for CJP Isa to reconsider his verdict in the specific case, adding a political dimension to the already charged discourse on matters of faith Meanwhile caretaker Federal Minister for Information Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs Murtaza Solangi issued a stern warning on Thursday against the use of social media platforms for inciting violence labelling it as an illegal activity Speaking at a press conference alongside Prime Minister s Special Representative on Interfaith Harmony, Hafiz Tahir Mahmood Ashrafi, Solangi announced that the government would take strict action against those involved in such unlawful activities emphasising the limitations on freedom of expression as outlined in Article 19 of the Constitution Under Article 19, Solangi highlighted that derogatory remarks against the judiciary armed forces and friendly nations were prohibited He specifically pointed out the misuse of social media platforms including X (formerly Twitter) YouTube Facebook and Instagram for propaganda, spreading lies, defaming government officials, and harassing individuals Solangi asserted that companies profiting from these platforms could not evade responsibility if their platforms were used to disrupt law and order incite violence and promote hatred Moreover law enforcement agencies also apprehended Abdul Wasay a resident of Pandora area in Rawalpindi who had launched a threatening campaign on social media against CJP Isa Wasay, participating in a vile and threatening campaign against the chief justice on social media platform X, was involved in character assassination as well The arrest of Wasay signalled the government’s commitment to curbing illegal activities on social media

TH E PTI claims that it will form the next government Now that the Sunni Ittehad Council has lent it its name it will now emerge in the National Assembly as the single largest group and establish a presence in the Sindh and Punjab Assemblies, as well as almost monpolize the KP Assembly It claims an absolute majority in the National Assembly, but until it establishes that, its claim that it will form the next government may be subject to some doubt The problem it has is that being the largest group in the National Assembly is not good enough What is needed is to show a simple majority in the House That the PTI is unable to do unless there are a large number of results reversed, as it claims they were reversed in the final result, demanding that the Forms 45 issued by the presiding officers of the polling stations did not tally with the final Forms 47 issued by the Returning Officers Meanwhile, the ECP committee set up to probe the allegations by the former Commissioner Rawalpindi proceeded by recording statements of more ROs of constituencies in Rawalpindi Division One effect is that the ECP has missed the deadline of Thursday for putting on its website the scanned copies of Form 45 and Form 47 This is likely to add to the doubts surrounding the election While the PTI, now the SIC, relies on its status as the largest group, it does not seem willing to engage in the tedious business of cobbling together the alliance it needs to form the government Meanwhile the PML(N) which has secured the support of the PPP and thus has a basic strength in the House is now engaging with other parties, including the MQM(P), the JUI(F) and the BAP If it can thus show a greater

Commissioner Rawalpindi’s allegations too serious to ignore

At Penpoint

M A N I A Z I

TH E confession by the Commissioner Rawalpindi that he had helped rig the election in his division and ordered the conversion of large wins by certain candidates into victories by other candidates had thrown into doubt for even more people the result of the February 8 election, and threaten to cause the same sort of complications that the 1977 PNA Movement did Almost as soon as he spoke there were questions raised about his sanity then it was also mentioned that he was due to retire in a few weeks just next month in fact and was going to parlay his confession into a position in a political party, presumably the PTI, whose candidates he said he had helped defeat It was also pointed out that he had no role in the elections not being a District Returning Officer or Returning Officer for any constituency However it should not be thought that his claims just came out of the blue They fed into a stream of claims about the unfairness of the polls The results were not at all what were expected by the more cynical: that Mian Nawaz would win Instead, PTI-backed independents won the most seats in the National Assembly They didn’t win enough to prevent the formation of a government composed of all the disparate elements apart from them That is probably why they are claiming that they were robbed of 54 seats Those seats would suffice to allow them to prevent the formation of any government However, the numbers being what they were, everyone else was able to get together and the PML(N) was able to form a minority government with PPP backing There were also agreements on the presidency the governorships and the presiding officers, all of which would have been possible if Chattha s claims are true

If one harks back to 1977, it seems then that there were some similarities, but important differences One big difference was that the outgoing government had contested the election Its re-election was at stake That re-election occurred and the opposition cried that there had been massive rigging which had allowed the ruling PPP to obtain a two-thirds majority

the National Assembly It should be remembered that the concept of caretaker governments was floated around this time However instead of being worn smooth with time this time around there has been a clamour about the

Iof the caretaker In a word instead of being purely neutral, they are a party The caretakers had not been accused of rigging on anyone s behalf, though there was speculation before about particular ministers However, Mr Chattha’s claim has pointed a smoking gun at the Punjab caretakers at least Mr Chattha s claim cannot be dismissed so easily for if he was not himself an RO his subordinates were including four DROs whose ACRs he would write True, there would have to be a paper trail established, of stamped ballots in ballot boxes, because while the

result form would establish the result it would become useless if a recount was not to yield the requisite number of ballots The recount is not an automatic right, unless the margin of victory falls within a certain narrow band, but if there is suspicion of wrongdoing, it can be ordered Recounts are usually not ordered because they involve much effort and are very tiring Normally the ballots are only counted at the polling station and the polling station results transmitted to the RO, who adds up all the results received, and sends a result to the ECP, which then declares it As in 2018, there were problems with the transmission of the result by computer The ECP should accept that it is a horse-and-cart organisation and should not aspire to anything complicated It should suffice that it has accepted the printing press and that ballots are not the shards of broken pottery the ancient Athenians used to use Anything involving a computer should be eschewed, and quill pens may go on being used However, one of the advantages of computerization would be that the results could be fixed The EVMs would have been a boon and the internet-voting abroad would have been manna from heaven for anyone wanting to manipulate the results How is the matter to be fixed? One way, which the government seems to be following, is to pretend that nothing is happening Another would be for the winners and losers to talk to one another In 1977 it was the PPP and PNA The dispute was twofold: the number of seats on which there should be a re-election and who would be in office while that re-election was held While there were initially 40 seats disputed, the PNA ultimately demanded not just a re-election, but 50 percent representation in the government, with Bhutto stepping down as PM As the Constitution had no provision for a caretaker government Bhutto insisted that he would have to lead the government At that time the PM s death or resignation meant a designated Senior Minister becoming caretaker PM till the House elected a new PM If Bhutto left office, he would be replaced by the Senior Minister The problem was that none of the members of the Assembly could be so appointed The PNA didn t trust them Thus at the moment it is not clear what the PTI demand is A re-election? Or only re-election on the impugned seats? Or a vacation of those seats, with new winners being declared elected? In other words,

fresh notifications of results Would that stand up in court even if the ECP agreed?

In 1977, the talks were between the PPP and the PNA The ECP was not involved, perhaps because it was a government department Now, who talks? The PML(N)? It benefited but who helped it? Not the caretakers The ECP? The PTI whose Chairman is in jail? As a matter of fact the PTI doesn t even exist officially It is not likely that this particular problem will be solved by the PTI independents entering into some form of party discipline by entering the Sunni Ittehad Council

Another factor which is to be considered is that the recount will only take place if a candidate applies and if the consolidation of the result has not taken place Once that consolidation has taken place all that can be done is have a fresh election The resignation of the Commissioner must be seen in perspective He was retiring in a matter of weeks, but the possibility of mental problems cannot be ruled out That the Commissionerate of such an important division could have mental problems not particularly hidden ones at that sheds a poor light on the government A Commissioner Lahore earned some notoriety for bringing his pet snake to meetings Clearly, not a normal human being However, no one did anything His subordinates did not pass on their concerns, probably because they were terrorised too much to do so

However the allegations by Mr Chattha are not that simple All those involved in the rigging must be identified and brought to book It is not just the officials that must be penalized Their motive must also be examined If necessary, those behind the alleged rigging must also be identified and punished It seems that it was not merely an offence against the Election Laws but a full-fledged subversion of the Constitution Of course one of the problems has been that the alleged rigging was not enough to ensure that a government could be formed It allowed a hung Parliament, and stopped the PTI obtaining the majority of its dreams

N 1994, to foster reconciliation between India and Pakistan, the Samjhota Express, known as the Friendship Express, was initiated Its purpose was to reconnect individuals from both nations who had been divided during the turbulent era of partition in the late 1940s As a tool of bringing the two nations together people on both sides of the border had hinged hopes of expedited reconciliation and increased cooperation; to ameliorate the pain and misgivings of the past However seventeen years ago on the fateful day of 19 February 2007 the terrorists bombed the Delhi-Lahore Express train killing 68 passengers onboard including 44 Pakistanis India, without due process, pointed fingers at Pakistan s Inter Services Intelligence, but was unable to substantiate its claim by failing to provide credible evidence at the first Joint Anti-Terror Mechanism meeting Interestingly it was a dedicated investigative team of the Haryana police that unearthed horrifying details about the terrorist act that claimed dozens of lives The investigation implicated Indian right-wing extremist organizations, notably Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and Abhinav Bharat, in the case Unsurprisingly the investigative team was stopped from further pursuing the case creating doubts as the bereaved families sought justice It wasn t until June 2008 when the newly arrived Anti-Terrorism Squad Chief, Hemant Karkare, opened the case and made promising progress As he apprehended Pragya Thakur and Lt Col Purohit, the masterminds of Malegaon blasts shocking revelations regarding the Samjhauta Express bombing came to the surface Prasad in a narco analysis test admitted to providing Research Department Explosive for the Samjhauta Express bombing Contrary to the Indian position of blaming Inter Service Intelligence, the revelation shifted the blame, implicating Indian extremist groups in the blast Thereby the Indian Intelligence Bureau (IB) coerced Karkare not to proceed further as it would impair the Centre s credibility internationally as the Centre had already blamed ISI for the terror strike It is also pertinent to note that Swami Aseemanand, linked to the Mecca Masjid bomb blast, in a taped interview, accused the RSS leadership of involvement in various attacks in the country He further revealed that the Samjhauta Express bombing was carried out on the explicit directions of Mohan Bhagwat then general secretary of RSS He went on to say that Bhagwat wanted to go ahead with the plan as he believed it was the right path and in line with the purported ideology of the RSS to cleanse the holy land of Muslims Aseemanand not only confessed to his crimes but also shed light on the involvement of RSS in attacks that shook the world In 2007 alone, the RSS masterminded the bombing of Samjhauta Express, Ajmer Sharif, and Mecca Masjid; followed by the Malegaon blast in 2008 Even though Aseemanand had confessed to the Samjhauta Express

Adenoviruses can be transmitted from person to person year-round, in people of all ages They may cause various illnesses with a wide range of symptoms such as common cold and flu symptoms like fever or chills, sore throat cough shortness of breath or difficulty breathing fatigue runny or stuffy nose body aches or muscle pain and headache Pneumonia symptoms are cough with yellow or greenish mucus production, fever with chills or sweating, shortness of breath, pain in the chest that is stabbing or sharp and worsens when breathing deep fatigue and loss of appetite Conjunctivitis symptoms are irritation of the eyes photophobia watery discharge from the eyes sensation of having a foreign body in the eye, corneal inflammation, and decreased vision Adenoviruses commonly cause several types of infections in children, including, respiratory conditions conjunctivitis inflammation and swelling in the area of the vocal cords bronchiolitis and pneumonia

Most commonly children get respiratory conditions from adenoviruses (such as colds, croup, bronchiolitis, and pneumonia), but occasionally they can get infections of the digestive tract (gastroenteritis)

Rare or less common symptoms of adenovirus infections could include bladder infections or nervous system infections including frequent urination, burning or pain when urinating, and blood in the urine

Usually, the healthcare provider does an

examination takes a history of the current symptoms, and makes a diagnosis based on this information If an adenovirus infection causes a sore throat, it’s common for a strep test to be obtained to rule out other underlying causes of the infection Special diagnostic tests can be done to detect and identify adenoviruses but these tests are expensive

On the other hand, if a person is very ill, the healthcare provider may obtain samples from various regions of the body such as the eyes, throat, stool, blood, or urine to identify the presence of adenoviruses

If a test is ordered to evaluate the underlying pathogen causing a respiratory infection a specimen can be obtained by swabbing the back of the throat via the nose or the mouth The swab is sent to the lab for testing If a specimen is taken from the nose, the method of testing is referred to as a nasopharyngeal swab This involves using a special cotton swab to collect a specimen inside both sides of the nose by swabbing for approximately 15 seconds When a lower respiratory infection, such as viral pneumonia, is suspected, the healthcare provider may ask for a sputum specimen This involves coughing up some mucus for lab evaluation A blood specimen could also be ordered to diagnose adenoviruses under some circumstances If there is clinical evidence of conjunctivitis or a corneal eye infection, the healthcare provider may obtain a conjunctival swab specimen for lab evaluation There are no drugs that treat adenovirus and no specific medical treatment can help clear the infection Adenovirus can t be treated with antibiotics since it is a virus and not a bacteria Most adenovirus infections aren t serious and require minimal intervention to relieve symptoms and prevent complications,

such as drinking plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration Most cases of adenovirus go away within a few days to a couple of weeks There are some things you can do to help your child feel better while preventing serious complications from the infection These interventions depend on your child s age symptoms, and general health Water, formula, breast milk, or electrolyte-containing fluids are recommended for rehydration for children Avoid giving young children sugars soda juices or sports drinks to rehydrate A child who is unable to drink or hold down fluids is at risk for dehydration and may need to be hospitalized; in this instance it s important to consult with a healthcare provider as soon as possible If needed, intravenous fluids will be given via an IV line The IV therapy will ensure your child has enough fluids and electrolytes to prevent severe complications such as dehydration If your child has diarrhea consult with the healthcare provider about which types of foods are best They also treat symptoms, such as inhalers to help open airways and improve the flow of oxygen in the lungs Bronchodilators can also be given via a mini nebulizer Administer supplemental oxygen if ordered by the healthcare provider This can be given through a mask nasal prongs or an oxygen tent There is a vaccine for certain types of adenoviruses, but it is not given to the general population because it has not been adequately studied in those with weakened immune systems infants children or females who are pregnant or breastfeeding There are some common ways to help prevent getting ill from the virus: meticulous handwashing such as scrubbing with soap for at least 20 seconds, then rinsing with water as hot as can be tolerated avoiding touching face eyes nose or mouth avoiding close contact with those who are ill staying home when ill covering the mouth during you cough or sneeze, and avoiding sharing cups or eating utensils and personal belongings

wealth and white savior mentality that drives Bill Gates philanthropic work He does attribute some good intentions but his criticism is merciless sometimes even coarse, while the absence of solutions for the problems he denounces other than the calls for do-goodism is frustrating His abilities as an investigative journalist are thus overshadowed by a somewhat naive militancy against the creative capitalism that Gates promotes and an evident intention to discredit not only his work but above all, him The demands he makes for transparency and the accusations of obscurity are dulled by the author himself in the pages he dedicates to Gates’ relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, the famous corruptor of minors at the service of the international jet set Gates has explained his meetings and interviews with him on countless occasions and in no case has any type of relationship other than their commercial relations or some confusing efforts to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, been proved Still, Schwab raises, with no evidence whatsoever, the possibility that their relationship “could have had something to do with Epstein’s principal activities in life: sexual gratification and the exercise of power The book is full of this kind of opinions and speculations to the detriment of a more serious analysis of Gates mistakes in the management of his foundation, the problems of shielding the intellectual property of vaccines in the hands of the pharmaceutical industries and ultimately the objective power that big technology companies have in global society I met Bill Gates at his home in Seattle where I stayed a couple of times and at the annual meetings he used to host at Microsoft headquarters Also on his visits to Madrid, where I interviewed him at length and invited him to visit the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE) He did not strike me as vain or arrogant nor did he seem as self-satisfied as Schwab claims him to be He signed a collaboration agreement with the RAE to improve Microsoft s grammar checker and was interested in the substantial unity of the Spanish language in all the countries where almost 600 million people speak it That man was very far from the sexist,

Einterest: if your terms include transgender women who as she points out experience a particular kind of sexual fetishisation on porn websites, would you not be curious to seek out a few of them to learn about their own engagement with porn? This omission, along with the absence of any women who perform in porn, seems off-key to me

The women who are included have widely divergent relationships with porn although none of them seem to have an uncomplicatedly positive relationship with it There are some interesting facts from Vera-Gray s research that surprised me, such as the number of straight women who primarily consume (male and female) gay porn Sometimes this is simply because they find it novel and hot, but sometimes it is related to an alienation from the flavour of heterosexuality promoted by most mainstream porn Even outside the realm of niche BDSM (bondage and discipline dominance and submission sadism and masochism) porn the average video on the front page of the free, hugely popular Pornhub website will involve a man being dominant, often physically imposing himself by choking or restraining, and often calling the woman involved a slut or a bitch There are plenty of other iterations of porn but this is the baseline standard online and it is what many will see when they begin to seek such things out

anonymous and of diverse ages and ethnic backgrounds She explicitly states that her interpretation of womanhood allowed for the inclusion of transgender and non-gender-conforming women but there are none of the former This seemed a little strange to me if only from the perspective of academic

reality is porous are seeing scenes that even our adult minds are unsure how to digest The book contains many unspeakably bleak accounts too, of women in abusive relationships whose partners seem not only to be addicted to porn but to use it as a sort of inspiration for their disgusting acts of violation, taking scenes they have witnessed and imposing them on their unwilling girlfriends Women who are aroused by extreme control and degradation speak of their horror at having unintentionally stumbled across footage of violations that seem real instead of performed, and realising they have no recourse to report their concerns anywhere But this is not a tirade against pornography: there are many accounts of porn helping women to understand their own desires and to be brave enough to ask for them in their sex lives There are women who in seeing their own body type represented and worshipped have found validation Most interesting – and something I have never seen publicly discussed before – is a short section about survivors of abuse and rape who have found some solace in porn, which offers them a controlled way to interact with sex again and to find representations to their liking Fiona Vera-Gray doesn’t come away from her conversations with any grand sweeping theory nor any proposed solutions to the harms she has revealed She is not a theorist, and though the book is divided into themes, there is little narrative movement – which as a reader one does at times yearn for There is inevitable repetition to following the same cycle of women finding taboo things arousing, then feeling guilty then resolving to respect their sexuality Ultimately though this is a sensitively written and generous piece of work Vera-Gray s lack of judgement shines from her prose and from her approach to her interview subjects, allowing women no longer to be simply the passive product in the conversation around porn Women on Porn by Dr Fiona Vera-Gray Torva

Friday 23 February 2024 COMMENT 05 W H E N Clinton won the presidency of the United States it was said that the Chinese could not wait to see Bill Not Clinton though but Gates It was the late 1990s the internet was still in its infancy and the digital bubble of the beginning of this century had not burst yet This character that aroused so much interest in the growing Asian empire is now described in The Bill Gates Problem as a “domineering brusque bully [ ] a cauldron of passions that freely erupts and as a former employee told the author of the book a complete and utter ass**** to people 70% of the time The other 30%, however, he was seen as a harmless, fun, supersmart nerd ” The 1990s were also the decade of the conflict between Microsoft and the now defunct Netscape browser which challenged what was already being openly described as the former s monopolistic practices Gates was investigated and accused in Congress for such practices; he ultimately won the battle, but the case harmed his reputation, and in 2000 he resigned as CEO of his company From there he undertook an expansion of the foundation that he had established with his wife and to which he has dedicated his main efforts in the last two decades In 2006 the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation received the Prince of Asturias Award for International Cooperation With a personal fortune of $100 billion and tens of billions more in his private foundation, Gates has been one of the richest men in the world for decades and the foundation has been the most generous organization of its kind specializing above all in health aid education and child nutrition with a large presence in Africa and India among other regions of what was formerly known as the Third World Tim Schwab, a contributor to the weekly left-wing newspaper The Nation undertook a detailed investigation to denounce something that in truth was already known: that American foundations are largely a way for billionaires to avoid taxes To prove this, he thoroughly looked into the accounts and procedures of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the failures and occasional successes of its philanthropic policies, and came to the conclusion that behind this facade of help to the needy hides an operation of power He is ruthless in his criticism although accurate in his analysis of the growing inequality in the world Absorbed by the revolutionary rhetoric, he laments that the Gates Foundation has remained deadly silent regarding movements such as Occupy Wall Street or Black Lives Matter, which demand social change in the face of the “excess
arrogant, miserable predator that Schwab portrays Nor did I deduce and this can be applied to the personal adventure of Steve Jobs Larry Page Zuckerberg Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos that his life s goal was world domination as suggested by this book If they have achieved it, or may achieve it, it is due to the dynamics of digital civilization and the objective difficulties in governing it The deregulation of financial capitalism which has increased inequality among humankind is due to the incompetence of obsolete political institutions and to leaders who care more about their own fates than those of their people The criticism against lame and wasteful government bureaucracies” might be part of the propaganda promoted by the world’s wealthy, but lately we have also heard it from small-scale farmers across Europe In conclusion I found the book to be more entertaining than interesting It provides a lot of information I m not sure if it s entirely verified and plenty of cheap ideology Above all, one can see the personal crusade of the author, determined to prove that Bill Gates is a problem for democracy and that millionaire philanthropists are a bunch of swindlers The world needs their money; maybe managed by party bureaucracies that much is not clear Bill Gates money that is but not Bill Gates himself
HE emergence of Adenovirus (ADV) poses an additional challenge attributed to climate change and environmental pollution Adenovirus is a common virus that can cause a range of cold and flu-like infections Researchers have identified about 50 types of adenoviruses that can infect humans Adenovirus infections occur throughout the year but peak in winter and early spring Infections range from mild to severe but serious illness rarely happens Adenoviruses are most common in children younger than five years old The spread of adenoviruses in babies and young children occurs often in daycares Babies and children in this setting come into close contact with one another They re also more likely to put objects in their mouths and less likely to wash their hands frequently The spread of adenoviruses in adults can occur in crowded environments If you spend time in a dormitory or crowded places, you may be at a higher risk of contracting the virus The virus also commonly spreads in hospitals and nursing homes If the person has a weakened immune system they are more likely to get seriously ill from an adenovirus infection This includes people who’ve had stem cell transplants or organ transplants It also includes people who have cancer or HIV/AIDS If you have cardiac or respiratory disease your chances of severe infection increase as well Adenoviruses spread from one infected person to another These viruses can result in mild illness (such as a respiratory infection), or, less commonly, severe illness like meningitis Sick from exposure to an adenovirus are those with a weakened immune system, such as elders or young children people with respiratory disorders such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and those with heart disease There are several common ways to become infected with adenovirus, such as close personal contact like touching or handshakes, coughing or sneezing touching the nose mouth or eyes after contact with objects that an infected person has touched or after direct contact with a person infected with the virus direct contact with an infected person s stool such as when changing a diaper Adenoviruses are resistant to many types of cleaners and disinfectants and can live on inanimate objects for long periods If there is an adenovirus case in your household or an outbreak in a facility such as a school or nursing home it s important to use a disinfectant known to kill adenoviruses, such as a bleach-based solution Late winter, spring, and early summer are the most common reasons for adenovirus infections but they can occur anytime during the year Children can spread adenoviruses in a few different ways such as respiratory infections are spread when fluid from the mouth, throat, or lungs that contains the virus is ejected via coughing
sneezing on another person Adenoviruses can
spread by touching objects contaminated by an adenovirus and then touching the nose mouth
eyes without washing one
hands Adenoviruses can live
many hours on toys, countertops, doorknobs, and other inanimate objects Digestive tract infections are spread by oral-fecal transmission as well

came back to me as I read Women on Porn by Fiona Vera-Gray a British academic and writer who has become an authority on pornography use and sexual violence Dr Vera-Gray has spent years speaking with women about pornography and here has used over 100 of their accounts to explore the way that women engage with porn, and how its consumption by the men we sleep with may affect us My encounter with Ronson was somewhat indicative of the interesting contradictions Vera-Gray opens up in these conversations What is the difference between reality and performance for the consumer? The gulf between a happy, consenting adult performer and an uncon-
Reading these women s experiences was at times painfully nostalgic Those, like me, who grew up just before the internet era have defining memories of watching titillating TV shows such as Eurotrash, or stealing our mother’s copy of Nancy Friday’s My Secret Garden a bestselling 1973 collection of women’s sexual fantasies I often feel blessed not to have grown up with a smartphone but never more so than when I look at porn online now A study for England s children s commissioner last year found that a quarter of 16- to 21-year-olds first saw pornography on the internet while still at primary school – something that the 2023 Online Safety Act promised to redress with age verification (critics question the legislation’s effectiveness) Children for whom the distinction between fantasy and

Kremlin says Biden’s ‘crazy SOB’ remarks about Putin debase United States

SAN FRANCISCO Ag e n c i e s

The Kremlin on Thursday said Joe Biden’s remark about President Vladimir Putin debased the United States and those who use such vocabulary and was a poor attempt to appear like a Hollywood cowboy Biden called Putin a crazy SOB during a fundraiser in San Francisco on Wednesday, warning there is always the threat of nuclear conflict but that the existential threat to humanity

This is the last existential threat It is climate We have a crazy SOB like that guy Putin and others and we always have to worry about nuclear conflict but the existential threat to humanity is climate ” Biden told a small group of donors

remarks today Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: The use of such language against the head of another state by the president of the United States is unlikely to infringe on our president, President Putin “But it debases those who use such vocabulary ” he said Peskov said the remark was probably some kind of attempt to look like a Hollywood cowboy But honestly, I don t think it s possible “Has Mr Putin ever used one crude word to address you? This has never happened Therefore I think that such vocabulary debases America itself the spokesman added Biden has previously cursed son of a b**** at others In January 2022, he was caught on the hot mic using the same term of abuse against a Fox News White House reporter Biden has a tendency to go off

EU sanctions against Chinese, Indian firms over trade with Russia ‘can’t help Ukraine win war

BEIJING s tA f f c o r r e s p o n d e n t Ahead of the second anniversary of the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which falls on Saturday, the EU has agreed a new package of sanctions against Russia that for the first time targets Chinese and Indian companies accused of “supporting Moscow s war effort The relevant Chinese firms are yet to respond to the sanctions Chinese analysts said on Thursday that due to Russia s progress in the battlefield, the US and Ukraine have pushed the EU to do more outside the battlefield to pressure Russia but in the past two years the sanctions against Russia have proven to be unsuccessful and adding other countries firms including Chinese ones will do nothing to change the situation in the war The EU s measures, which will be its 13th package of sanctions imposed in response to Russia s military operation against Ukraine, target close to 200 individuals and entities but stop short of any sweeping economic action targeting crucial industrial sectors the Financial Times reported on Thursday The inclusion of Chinese and Indian companies comes as the EU and its G7 partners attempt to crack down on Russia’s use of third countries and transit routes to evade existing curbs designed to hamper its war economy according to the report Brussels had abandoned plans to sanction Chinese mainland companies under pressure from member states including Germany that were fearful of antagonizing China But Russia’s continued ability to produce large numbers of drones missiles tanks and other weapons despite extensive Western trade bans has put pressure on G7 capitals to step up their anti-evasion efforts said the FT report The measures will target three companies in the Chinese mainland and one in India alongside businesses in Sri Lanka Turkey Thailand Serbia and Kazakhstan according to documents seen by the FT The targeted businesses will be hit by trade restrictions after being identified as helping to supply equipment, particularly electronics and microchips, used by Russia to manufacture weapons or other equipment used in its war against Ukraine said the report According to the South China Morning Post the three Chinese mainland companies are Guangzhou Ausay Technology Co Limited, Shenzhen Biguang Trading Co Limited and Yilufa Electronics Limited The Hong Kong company is RG Solutions Limited They are part of a group of 193 named entities on the latest round of sanctions including firms from Turkey Kazakhstan North Korea and India bringing the total number blacklisted to almost 2,000 The Global Times reporters tried to reach these companies on Thursday but all refused to comment on the EU sanctions From public information it’s difficult to find hard evidence proving that these companies have helped the Russian military against Ukraine Wang Yiwei, director of the Institute of International Affairs at the Renmin University of China, told the Global Times on Thursday that the EU’s sanctions came under pressure from Washington and Kiev as the US wants the EU to take the responsibility of providing more help to Ukraine and put more pressure on Russia when some Western countries encounter difficulties in providing military aid “They noticed that only military aid by itself can’t help Ukraine to beat Russia so now they try to escalate the sanctions to implicate other parties to pressure Russia But all of these efforts are pointless and useless because in the past two years, Western sanctions against Russia have proven to be a failure, and the corruption problem in Kiev means Western military aid cannot be fully transformed into combat capability ” Wang noted Therefore sanctioning Chinese Indian and other countries companies won t help Ukraine gain any advantages, but will only impact the EU s ties with the relevant countries, said Li Haidong, a professor at the China Foreign Affairs University “The current situation on the battlefield is making the West disappointed and sanctioning other countries companies that are doing normal business with Russia won t allow the West to completely change the pessimistic situation for Kiev, Li said At the Foreign Ministers’ meeting of the G20 in Brazil foreign ministers of Western countries on Wednesday attacked Russia over its conflict with Ukraine as Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov listened diplomats said, Reuters reported Friday 23 February 2024 | K AR ACHI 06 NEWS

PR OFIT s tA f f r e p o r t In a significant economic development, Pakistan’s exports to South China recorded a 16% growth in 2023 according to a report by China Economic Net (CEN) Muhammad Irfan Trade and Investment Counsellor at Pakistan s Consulate in Guangzhou attributes this rise to stronger trade relations and strategic efforts to diversify Pakistan s export markets Data from the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) shows that exports to South China surged to $973 21 million in 2023 from $836 645 million the previous year This growth highlights the robustness of Pakistan s export sector, with Guangdong and Fujian Provinces being the primary importers of Pakistani goods The increase is partly due to the China-Pakistan Free Trade Agreement (CPFTA) which has made Pakistani goods more competitive in China by reducing tariffs Events like the Food & Agriculture Exhibition and TEXPO 2023 further boosted exports, especially in textiles, leather, seafood, and agricultural products The Pakistani government has supported this growth through various incentives including subsidized loans and export financing schemes The geographical proximity between South China and Pakistan has also facilitated trade reducing transportation costs and time This export surge not only benefits Pakistan s economy but also helps in balancing the trade relationship with China moving towards reducing Pakistan’s reliance on Chinese imports This marks a positive step towards a more balanced and mutually beneficial economic relationship between Pakistan and China BHOPAL Ag e n c i e s After Ayodhya’s Babri Masjid and Gyanvapi Masjid in Varanasi a Hindutva outfit has set its sights on Bhojshala mosque complex in Madhya Pradesh state in India The Hindu Front for Justice Trust has filed a petition in Madhya Pradesh high court claiming the Bhojshala mosque in Dhar city was a temple The petitioner urged the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to conduct an extensive survey to clarify whether Bhojshala is a temple or a mosque The ASI in response cited a survey conducted in 1902 asserting that a new survey is unnecessary and the report is already with the high court The Maulana Kamaluddin Welfare Society which is associated with the mosque inside the complex argued that a court order in 2003 permitted worship on Tuesdays and Fridays, rendering the new petition baseless Despite this, the petitioner called for a detailed survey to ensure compliance with the Worship Rights Act The HC bench after hearing the arguments of all parties concerned reserved its order on the plea filed by the Hindutva outfit Recent developments have thrust Bhojshala into the spotlight, with Hindu outfits intensifying their campaign to reclaim the site as a temple Echoing sentiments akin to the Gyanvapi issue, these groups claim the primacy of Hindu religious symbols and seek legal recognition for their claims

with a focus on fiscal consolidation, revenue mobilisation and expenditure rationalisation the caretaker government navigated through economic challenges with strategic measures Domestic Borrowings: The caretaker government inherited a policy rate of 22 percent, the highest since 1972 with the preceding period averaging around 19 5 percent The government managed to improve the domestic debt profile by extending the maturity of government securities, raising debt below the policy rate margin Another significant, long-term policy step taken by the caretaker government was tapping into non-bank and retail investors through the capital market by issuing shariah compliant security According to the statement a notable achievement was the reduction of borrowing through government securities via the banking sector by 67 percent compared to the preceding period The successful retirement of short-term Treasury Bills amounting to Rs 1 6 trillion further reduced the government’s gross financing needs Additionally the caretaker government shifted its domestic borrowing to long-term debt securities focusing on floating-rate securities while borrowing fixed-rate instruments at rates averaging 3 to 4 percent below the policy rate This strategic move increased the average time to maturity of domestic debt to around 3 0 years by January 2024 aligning with targets set in the Medium-Term Debt Management Strategy External Borrowings: The share of external debt in total public debt decreased from 38 3 percent to 36 7 percent by the end of December 2023 reducing foreign currency risk in line with strategic targets It is important to note that the government does not have much to do with the dates of maturity of older debt It is also noteworthy that a considerable external debt disbursed to Pakistan in the form of an IMF tranche does not translate itself into the books during the government s tenure due to prevalent public finance practices According to the statement by the finance division no expensive external borrowing was raised from commercial banks and international capital markets during this time The statement also states that the prudent debt management approach of the caretaker government has not only lowered borrowings but also contributed to fiscal and external current account sustainability While lowering a debt that was scheduled to be paid during a time period may not be an achievement, the claim of sustainability will have to pass the test of time before the caretaker sets up pats itself on the back As of now Pakistan is inside an IMF program which mainly steered the economic policy of the caretaker setup A noteworthy policy shift was the emphasis on reducing the

PTI announces intra-par t y elections scheduled for March 3rd
ISLAMABAD S ta f f R e p o R t
The PTI on Thursday announced that it would be holding fresh intra-party elections on March 3 (Sunday) After a long battle and marathon hearings in the run-up to the February 8 general elections, the PTI was stripped of its symbol last month when the Supreme Court upheld the Election Commission of Pakistan’s decision to declare the party’s internal polls as “unconstitutional” In its detailed verdict the apex court had ruled that a political party must never be deprived of its election symbol for some minor violation but forsaking intra-party elections was a major violation of law and the Constitution The verdict forced hundreds of party members to contest the elections as independent candidates with different electoral symbols and deprived the PTI of its right to reserved seats The party had earlier decided to hold the internal elections on February 5 but later changed its mind and postponed them until after the Feb 8 general elections over the unfortunate security situation created by the administration and concerns expressed by members Today, the PTI’s Federal Chief Election Commission released its schedule for the intra-party elections which will now be held on March 3 According to the schedule the party will issue its notice inviting nomination papers for PTI members on Feb 22 Party members will be able to file their nomination papers with the returning officers (RO) between 10am to 3pm on Feb 23 and 24 The schedule said that the scrutiny of the nomination forms will be completed by 3pm on Feb 25 while Feb 26 will be the deadline for filing appeals against the RO s decision The decisions on the appeals and the final list of panels/candidates will be issued by Feb 29 Meanwhile the last day for withdrawing candidates/panels and the issuance of a revised list of panels will be Feb 28

Mahmood Soomro addressed the gathering, stating that JUI-F has decided to launch a nationwide movement against doctored election results ” He asserted that Sindh has witnessed the worst electoral fraud with constituency delimitations made to favour the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and appointments of Returning Officers (ROs) and the District Returning Officers (DROs) influenced by Wadera Shahi He lampooned the Sindh Election Commission the bureaucracy and the state institutions, which according to him were helpless against the powerful waderas of Sindh on election day Maulana Soomro, while addressing the crowd highlighted that police Rangers and army were not deployed at the sensitive constituencies in Sindh On February 17 workers from Ghotki and Kashmore blocked roads from Kashmore and workers from Sukkur blocked roads from Sukkur The Sindh-Punjab border was also closed for an indefinite period He demanded that NA-191 Kashmore, PS02 Panu Aqil, and PS-22 Thul results be released according to Form 45 Fazl rejects ‘rigged’ election results Earlier Fazl threw a political curveball by rejecting the rigged election results while extending an invitation to PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif to join him on the opposition benches instead of pursuing government ambitions PR OFIT Z a i n n a e e m It seems that Indus Motors is seeing a small renaissance of sorts In an environment where the auto sector is seeing a constant decline Indus Motors is seeing a turn in its fortunes This turn is coming in two major avenues First of all the company has seen its results take a turn for the better based on its half yearly accounts and the company has announced an investment of Rs 3 billion These two events show that the company is turning a corner and this year can see it gain some of the ground it had lost FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE At the end of June 30th 2023 the company announced an earning per share of Rs 123 which was its second worst year since 2018 The only year the company saw lower profits was during 2020 due to the pandemic The company sold only 31 500 units for the year compared to nearly 76 000 a year before that In terms of its revenues the company registered sales of Rs 177 billion which were 35% lower than a year before of Rs 276 billion Similarly its profit after tax was only Rs 10 billion for the year where it had been Rs 16 billion in 2022 Its return on equity (ROE) was only 16% in 2023 compared to 29% in 2022 This was only the second time that its ROE had fallen below 25% in the last 6 years The primary reason for the bad financial performance was based on the lower sales and revenue that the company made during the period Gross margin for the company was already on a downward trend due to the rising direct costs and 2023 saw the ratio fall to 4 4% when it was around 6% in 2022 The rise in its direct costs was caused by supply chain issues and was having an impact on the bottom line of the company Ad powered by advergic com With indirect operating expenses being similar to the ones last year the company was only able to earn operating profits of R 3 4 billion which had been Rs 13 8 billion in 2022 This was a sharp fall of 75% which was caused due to fall in sales The company was able to see some rise in other income leading to its profit after taxation jumping to Rs 9 7 billion compared to Rs 15 8 billion last year This led to its earning per share dropping from Rs 201 per share to Rs 123 per share in 2023 which was a fall of nearly 39% In the backdrop of such dismal performance, it seems that the company is improving based on the half year results from this year The company saw improvement in its earnings per share last quarter where the company earned Rs 41 per share compared to Rs 16 5 for the same period last year The reason behind this was that cost of sales were actually greater than sales last year in the same quarter which led to a gross loss last year This year, the same period saw a gross profit which was due to stable currency seen from June 2023 to September 2023 The same phenomenon has continued into the half year performance The company saw its quarter gross loss of Rs 0 5 billion turn into a profit of Rs 1 4 billion for the period from October 2023 to December 2023 Even though indirect operating costs have been higher this quarter, the company has shrunk its loss from operations from Rs 1 4 billion last year to break even this year for the same quarter Other income has been one of the biggest contributors to the income earned and has seen earning per share for the quarter jump to Rs 22 per share which was Rs 17 per share for this quarter The improving performance has been reflected in the half year results as well The half year has seen a gross profit of Rs 4 7 billion from a gross loss of Rs 2 8 billion last year for the same period Similarly the indirect operating costs have been similar leading to a profit from operations of Rs 2 1 billion which was a loss of Rs 4 7 billion last year Once other income is considered the company saw its earning per share go from Rs 33 per share to Rs 63 per share which shows an almost doubling of its profits One caveat that needs to be mentioned here is that a large chunk of income for the company is not coming from its operations but from other income Other income accounts for Rs 5 billion whereas Rs 2 billion is from operating income The other income Indus Motors is earning is dividend capital gains and markup from some of the investments that it has made so the improvement in performance is not solely under the control of the company However it still needs to be seen that the company has started to make profits under many of the headers it was making a loss in which shows that the company has seen an end to rising cost of raw material once the currency has stabilized NEW INVESTMENT BEING ANNOUNCED In addition to the improvement in its operating performance, the company has also announced to the stock exchange that the company has approved an investment of around Rs 3 billion which will be made by the company in the coming years The investment is part of the initiative taken by the company where it is looking for additional localization of parts and components that it uses for its existing vehicles Indus Motors has looked to increase the localization of the parts that it uses and encourages these parts to be manufactured locally in order to reduce its cost and weight on the foreign exchange reserves This also proves to be beneficial for the local auto sector of the country The company will look to invest in plant and machinery, dies, equipment and molds which will help the company in achieving localization The investment is expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2025 Restore social media website X across countr y immediately, SHC directs PTA KARACHI S ta f f R e p o R t The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Thursday directed the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to fully
