UNDREDS of thousands of protesters poured onto streets across the world in support of Palestinians, condemning Israel’s ongoing aggression in Gaza Strip and calling for an immediate ceasefire. On the other hand, Israeli army said it was ready to evacuate babies from Gaza’s largest hospital on Sunday, but Palestinian officials said people inside were still trapped, with two newborns dead and dozens at risk from a power outage amid intense fighting nearby. Al-Shifa and other hospitals in northern Gaza, the focus of Israel’s month-old war to wipe out Hamas and free hostages held by the group, were barely able to care for patients. More people are wounded daily by fierce Israeli bombardment. More than 11,000 Palestinians have lost their lives since Israel started its ruthless bombardment campaign on the besieged enclave over a month ago in response to Hamas’ surprise attack. Israel has put Gaza — home to 2.3 million people — under siege amid ongoing ground battles with Hamas. In the last few days, more than 20,000 Palestinians have been forced to relocate to the south of the strip as Israeli forces have laid siege on major hospitals in the enclave. Israeli attacks on Gaza have prompted protests in various countries including England, Indonesia, Spain and others. Government says Gaza death toll hits 11,180 The government in the Gaza Strip has said the death toll from fighting between Hamas and Israel in the Palestinian territory has risen to 11,180, AFP reports. The government media office said the dead included 4,609 children and 3,100 women, whilst a further 28,200 people have been wounded. Speaking from inside the biggest hospital, Al-Shifa, Gaza health ministry spokesman Ashraf Al-Qidra told Reuters Israeli fire had not hit it directly overnight but was “terrorising medical officials and civilians alike”. Justice (r) Arshad Hussain Shah sworn in as the caretaker Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister on Sunday, a day after his predecessor Azam Khan passed away after a brief illness. KP Governor Haji Ghulam Ali administered oath to Shah at a ceremony at Governor’s House in Peshawar hours after former CM Mahmood Khan met former opposition leader Akram Khan Durrani for consultation on the appointment of the new interim chief executive. On Saturday, the KP governor had penned letters to for the former CM and the opposition leader, inviting them to begin consultation process under Article 224(1A) of the Constitution for the next chief minister’s appointment. In the letter, the governor had said he was under constitutional obligation to call upon them. He added that as per the Constitution, the process should be completed in three days. According to a notification issued after today’s meeting, Durrani and Mahmood had agreed to appoint Shah as the caretaker CM under clause 1(A) of Article 224 of the Constitution. The same was subsequently sent to the KP governor, who approved it. Shah was appointed as the law minister in former CM Azam Khan’s cabinet earlier this year. Previously, he also served as the chief justice of Gilgit-Baltistan. LEGAL CONUNDRUM: Azam Khan’s demise had stirred a debate as to how a new caretaker chief executive of the province would be appointed since there were no explicit constitutional provisions about procedures to be adopted in such a scenario.

Shifa was also out of reach for the newly wounded, said Mohammad Qandil, a doctor at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip, who is in touch with colleagues there. “Shifa hospital now isn’t working, no one is allowed in, nobody is allowed out, and if you are wounded or injured around Gaza area you can’t be evacuated by our ambulance to Shifa hospital, so Shifa hospital now is out of service,” he told Reuters. On Sunday, Israel said people could safely evacuate from three hospitals in northern Gaza, including Shifa via one of its exits. PM Kakar, Malaysian counterpart agree to further bilateral ties RIYADH

Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar on Saturday held a meeting with Prime Minister of Malaysia Anwar Ibrahim on the sidelines of the Joint Arab Islamic Extraordinary Summit. The prime minister reiterated Pakistan’s strong condemnation of the ongoing brutal campaign by Israeli forces against the Palestinian people in Gaza. The leaders emphasized on the urgency of galvanizing efforts against the ongoing Israeli brutalities that had resulted in huge loss of precious lives and forced displacement, PM Office Media Wing said in a press release. Prime Minister Kakar and Prime Minister Ibrahim also reviewed Pakistan-Malaysia bilateral relations with special focus on strengthening economic cooperation between the two countries. Prime Minister Kakar briefed his Malaysian counterpart on the establishment of Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC), which worked on the whole of government approach to facilitate foreign investments in the country and ensuring ease of doing business. The two leaders also highlighted the revitalization of the Joint Ministerial Commission, collaboration in the vocational training sector
and export of manpower as key areas for further cooperation. POWER DIVISION’S ANTI POWER-THEFT MEASURES Meanwhile, Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar on Sunday appreciated the crackdown on power-theft efforts of the Power Division which were bearing excellent results. “My government will continue to support this campaign with more vigour so that our annual losses can be further minimized,” the prime minister posted on X. The caretaker prime minister also shared an earlier post of Secretary Power Division Rashid Langrial, who on his social handle announced that an amount of Rs46 billion had been recovered from the power pilferers from September 7 to October 31 during the ongoing
anti-power theft campaign. Our estimated annual losses across the national grid for the current year are Rs589 billion. He said that they were working on the remaining problem space of Rs390 billion of which they were able to recover Rs46 billion in 53 days i.e. PKR 867 million per day. “If the same level of state support and field effort can be maintained (and that is a big if, I must admit), 80 % of the problem space gets resolved,” he added.
PPP Senator Saleem Mandviwalla on Sunday called into question the “selected privatisation” of Pakistan International Airlines’ (PIA), expressing serious concern that procedure was not being followed in the privatization of the state asset. Speaking during an interview on a private TV channel, Mandviwalla said he had come to know about a meeting on the “disinvestment of the PIA” chaired by Interim Privatisation Minister Fawad Hasan Fawad, which was also attended by PML-N stalwart Saad Rafique, who had been railways and aviation minister in the last PDM government. “Now you tell me what is this? You (PML-N) are saying we (PPP) agreed to the privatisation and allowed the caretaker government to do so, but if a previous minister is attending that meeting then this is selected privatisation instead of being transparent,” the PPP stalwart said. With the appointed a financial adviser for the transaction by the Board of Privatisation Commission, the formal process for the divestment of Pakistan International Airlines Corporation (PIACL) commenced on Friday. The national flag-carrier has been plagued with crisis after crisis as Pakistan State Oil (PSO) has refused to supply fuel to the airline on account of payment issues. The weeks-long ordeal led to the cancellation of hundreds of flights, pushing the national carrier to the verge of collapse. The PPP senator said he was concerned that the airline would be sold to “whoever you want however you want”. “There will be no transparency and then obviously, the people we will protest. We will protest politically and PIA employees, everyone, will protest. People will go to court as well,” he added. When asked whether he thought the PML-N was “on board” with the privatisation process, Mandviwalla said: “[Obviously], the PML-N is doing it.” Senator Mandviwalla again questioned the capacity in which Rafique attended the meeting. The senator when asked to comment on the perception that the airline would be sold to some blue-eyed boy of the PML-N, replied that this was not a mere perception but “a fact”. “When you do privatisation like this then you must have prepared a buyer and done an agreement with them that ‘no one else will bid in the privatisation so we will give to you’,” Mandviwalla said. He reiterated that privatisation carried out in such a manner would not be acceptable to the PPP and the party would protest against it. Earlier, PPP Senator Raza Rabbani had also opposed PIA’s privatisation in all its forms and said: “It seems questionable that PIA planes were functioning normally when the fuel supply was abruptly halted and then resumed. There should be an investigation into the precise events.” He had sought an inquiry into PSO’s refusal to supply fuel. “Through a deliberate campaign … PIA is being prepared for a loot sale,” he had said. The PIA’s recent descent came after the government said in August it would privatise the airline as part of a fiscal discipline plan agreed under an International Monetary Fund bailout. This made some stakeholders question whether the national airline was being prepared for “a loot sale” through a deliberate campaign. The government’s plans have also ignited concerns among PIA staff, who are worried about their job security and benefits.

To further expand PML-N’s alliance with regional players and strengthen its footing ahead of the scheduled general elections, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif is scheduled to fly to Balochistan Monday (today) to review the situation and party organization. On Tuesday last, the PML-N formed an alliance with the MQM-P and announced to reach out to other parties in Sindh. To further this strategy, a PML-N team Sunday reached Karachi to meet Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM-P) and other parties’ leadership. In the first leg of the trip, senior leaders of PML-N including Khawaja Saad Rafique met with Pir Pagara and conveyed him Nawaz Sharif’s message. Meanwhile, former federal minister and Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) central leader Khawaja Saad Rafiq said that parley with Pakistan Muslim League Func-
tional (PML-F) President Pir Pagara on upcoming elections was positive. There will be a positive outcome of the talk and both the parties are agreed to continue such meetings in future with a positive approach, the PML-N leader said. PML-N leader Ayaz Sadiq and newly-nominated Sindh President Bashir Memon were also present in the meeting. “We came here on the instructions of Nawaz Sharif. Meeting with the Pir was very positive. JUI-F CLARIFIES STANCE ON SEAT ADJUSTMENT, ELECTORAL ALLIANCE: Meanwhile, Jamiat Ulema-eIslam Fazl (JUI-F) leader Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri clarified his party position on seat adjustment and electoral alliance ahead of the general elections 2024. He clarified that the JUI-F central leadership allowed provincial chapters to go for seat-to-seat adjustment, however, it has not made a decision on electoral alliance with any political party so far. He said that JUI-F safeguards the Islamic Constitution of Pakistan and the religio-political party could transfer the country into an Islamic welfare state. He criticised that the Constitution was approved in Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s era but Islamic laws were not implemented.
Haideri added that all former prime ministers including two-time PM Benazir Bhutto late and three-time PM Nawaz Sharif had not implemented Islamic laws. He vowed that JUI-F would implement
the Islamic governance system after coming into power. Unveiling the JUI-F manifesto, Haideri said that JUI-F would raise labourers’ salaries to Rs50,000, end corruption and commission practices and send looters to jails.

Former opposition leader Raja Riaz on Sunday said Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) does not need to ally with anyone in Punjab. Speaking to reporters in Lahore on Sunday, Riaz said he was ‘thankful to God’ that the PTI chairman is no more prime minister. Raja Riaz also said the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz will ‘sweep’ Punjab in the upcoming elections. He added that the PML-N does not have space to adjust more people from other parties and the party does not need to ally with anyone. However, the PML-N leader said that work was underway for seat adjustments in the province. Raja Riaz said it seemed unlikely that the Istehkam-e-Pakistan party would make major inroads into Punjab. He added that the IPP does not have an alliance with PMLN.

Punjab Police arrested the Pakistani ‘Charles Sobraj’ who fled from Pakistan after killing two people and kept his identity hidden in multiple countries including Holland and South Africa. The Proclaimed Offender (PO) was arrested in the case of murder after 17 years from Italy through Interpol. Accused Abrar had killed two people in Gujranwala along with his associates and fled abroad in 2006. After the incident, the accused first fled to South Africa and then to Holland, police said “Punjab Police arrested the accused after issuing a red notice from Interpol. This year, the total number of arrested advertisements from foreign countries has reached 129,” Police said. Punjab IG said the accused should be punished by completing the legal procedures soon. Punjab IG said that the arrested accused will be transferred to Pakistan.

Caretaker Minister for Information and Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs Murtaza Solangi on Sunday underlined the need for exploiting the untapped potential of renewable energy resources in the country to minimize carbon emission in the environment and reduce the import bill. Addressing the opening ceremony of LONGi Solar’s Lahore office, he said renewable energy resources such as solar and wind were abundantly present in Pakistan and there was a strong need to reap its benefits. He said currently the country produced 58.8 per cent of its electricity through expensive and unaffordable means such as coal and fuel that not only impacted the environment adversely but also economy, trade and people. The minister said the previous government approved 10,000 megawatts solar energy projects and efforts were underway to materialize them. However, the next elected government and parliament should also continue the same policy for betterment of the country. He congratulate the LONGi Solar for achieving the milestone and expressed his gratitude for China that had been supporting Pakistan’s initiatives for energy production through renewable energy resources.

Six of same family killed in Lahore accident, eight die in Faisalabad, Karachi Six members of a same family were killed in a tragic car accident in Lahore’s Defence Phase 7 area while eight others died in two road crashes occurred in Faisalabad and Karachi. According to Rescue 1122 and police, the ill-fated family was returning to their Shadab Colony home on Ferozepur Road in two cars when one of the cars rammed into the other near Defence Phase 7. The victims were identified: as Muhammad Hussain, 22, Rukhsana, 52, Anyiba, 3, Huzafa, 4 months, Sajjad, 26, and Ayesha, 22. According to Rescue 1122, the accident occurred in Defence-C area when three recklessly driven vehicles collided with one another. The National Institute of Health (NIH) has issued an awareness and communication alert for Human Leptospirosis. According to NIH’s Centre for Disease Control, the objective of this advisory is to alert and facilitate the health authorities and other stakeholders for ensuring early detection, timely management and laboratory detection of Leptospirosis cases. The advisory said that Leptospirosis is a rare zoonotic bacterial disease caused by the bacterium belonging to the Leptospira genus, which transmits from animals mostly rodents, pets, cattle and other wild animals to humans through contact with infected animal excreta. Leptospirosis occurs worldwide but is more common in tropical and subtropical areas with high rainfall. In recent years, cases of human and animal Leptospirosis have been reported in numerous countries in the Middle East. However, sporadic cases have been reported in Pakistan in the past few years. The disease is found mainly wherever humans come into contact with the urine of infected animals or a urine-polluted environment. It is an occupational hazard for many people who work outdoors or with animals or water-based activities. Person-to-person transmission is very rare, there may be individuals who have been exposed to a common source.

The applicants have thanked the Office of the Ombudsman Punjab for providing them with their legal right to a government job. The Ombudsman Punjab is an independent office that investigates complaints against government departments and officials. It has the power to direct government departments to take corrective action, including providing relief to complainants. The provision of regular government jobs to these 15 applicants is a welcome step by the Punjab Ombudsman.

The secretary further said out of 232 cases, 139 were reported in Lahore. Dengue virus is a mosquito-borne viral disease that has rapidly spread in recent years around the world. Dengue virus is transmitted by female mosquitoes mainly of the species Aedes aegypti and, to a lesser extent, Ae. albopictus.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government is facing severe financial challenges as the federal government has not provided the expected Rs23 billion in net electricity profits for the initial four months of the current fiscal year. The shortfall, amounting to Rs23.36 billion, has raised concerns within the provincial administration. According to documents of the Finance Department, there was an estimated allocation of Rs28.36bln for electricity during the first four months. However, only Rs5 billion have been received from the federal government, creating a deficit in the
expected funds. This discrepancy has compelled the provincial government to make cuts in expenditures. The Finance Department has indicated that the unavailability of these funds may affect various developmental projects and essential services. The Finance Department underscores that during the aforementioned four months, the federal government contributed Rs5 billion towards other budgetary allocations. Pakistani rupee extended losses against the US dollar for the third consecutive week and depreciated by 0.96 percent in the interbank market and 1.06 percent in the open market. According to details, the rupee opened at 284.31 against the greenback in the interbank market on Monday last and closed at 287.03 on Friday, going down by Rs2.72 (-0.96 percent). This was the third consecutive week when the rupee depreciated in all sessions of the week. The rupee has appreciated by Rs0.96 during the current fiscal year 2023-24 in the interbank market, while it has depreciated by Rs55.35 in the current year. The rupee gained Rs6.26 (+2.23 percent) against the greenback in
the month of October. The currency surged more than 6 percent in September to become the top performer in the world. Similarly, the local unit closed the week in the range of 285-288 against the dollar in the open market on Friday after opening the week at 282-285 on Monday, going down by Rs3 (-1.06 percent). Despite this weekly depreciation, The rupee has recovered by Rs44 against the dollar in the last 47 sessions in the open market. The IMF’s warnings about currency fluctuations must be heeded
HE IMF review is to be succeeded by policy level talks, which is a good indication of the review’s success. It was perhaps inevitable that a government without any wish or desire for electoral appeal, should be able to meet the IMF’s criteria, because even if what the IMF wanted was given, it usually meant the kind of measures that would be wildly unpopular. These would be resisted by governments frightened that they would not be re-elected. However, there are certain caveats that should not be attributed to IMF bloodymindedness, but should be given due thought because they contain more than a grain of truth. Perhaps more relevant, they will not go away, because the country will go on having recourse to the IMF. The first is the caveat about foreign exchange fluctuations posing a threat to the economy. That is welltaken, because the recent decline was because of administrative measures rather than because of any change in economic fundamentals. Though those administrative measures may have worked for some time, they have now apparently stopped working, because the economic pressures on the country were too much. As a matter of fact, from a purely economic point of view, there is little to choose between Senator Ishaq Dar’s tactic of using borrowed dollars to lower the price of the rupee and the use of administrative measures to do the same. One of their commonalities is their temporariness, which is being illustrated in the latter’s case, as the rupee has begun to fall again, despite those administrative measures. The speculators who were dragging down the rupee were actually right in their assessment of where the market was headed. Another aspect that will not be fulfilled is that of adding about two million new taxpayers, as claimed by the FBR, as it prepares to meet the revenue target. It should be realized that people remain out of the tax net for two major reasons. First, no one provides taxpayers any services in return for tax money. Second, to become a taxpayer means becoming liable to the full crushing weight of the taxation machinery, with the FBR issuing triumphant claims of being able to meet targets by further squeezing those already in the tax net. The IMF has always been worried about Pakistan’s low tax-to-GDP ratio. It will continue to be so, especially if it gives any credence to over-confident predictions by the FBR.

The consensus reflects that two sides of the strait belong to one China, and they will both work together to make it one China for national reunification. The cross-strait tension escalated in 2016 in the era of President Tsai Ing-wen’s election. The USA established a diplomatic relationship with the PRC in 1979. At the same time, it extended its diplomatic ties to the ROC. Still, this relationship is regarded as an unofficial relation with Taiwan so as to sell its military equipment to its military. Beijing urged the USA to stop selling its weapons and cease contact with Taipei, but the U.S. claimed itself as a peace-loving country. The US stance on China and Taiwan was to maintain the same status quo and always answered that it did not support Taiwanese independence. However, it saw both Beijing and Taipei maintain a cordial relationship as there is a hard choice for the USA among its policymakers towards Taiwan. There was a quiet debate in the national security circles of the USA that Xi’s intentions in Taiwan were meant to shock the world by using its military power against the USA and the rest of Europe. The USA and Tai-
wan need help with which path Xi might take. Many analysts and policymakers argue that the best way is for the USA to deter China from attacking Taiwan. US Representative Mike Gallagher of Wisconsin recently stated that the USA needed to arm Taiwan with sufficient military capabilities to deter China and avoid war, and it was time for the USA to sell its weapons to Taiwan to stop China dramatically. There are two choices for the USA to deter China’s aggressive policy on Taiwan. The USA could either fight with China to protect Taiwan’s security or dominate China’s military by taking an offshore island. The other choice is to flood the Western Pacific with attack submarines to break the blockade by sailing and flying supplies into Taiwan. However, Xi has already prepared China’s military for a hard choice in Taiwan to take it back by force. Xi is aware of the dangerous intentions of the USA on the island, and China is preparing for war with the USA if it takes any aggressive steps on Taiwan. Secretary of the Air Force Frank Kendall has recently stated that if Xi elects to force the issue, he will push himself toward more severe violence that may create decisive results and could
harm him on the island. Policy analysts have warned that Xi would love to win Taiwan without fighting and can astonish the major powers. China has a long tradition of starting its wars with surprise attacks, as noticed in Korea (1950) and Vietnam (1979). If the first strategy of Xi couldn’t run, the second option for China is to use its force as decisively as possible. This choice will astonish the significant powers, including the United States. The third Choice for Xi to control Taiwan would be the blockade. Under this strategy, he would seize some pretext to remove Taiwan from the outside world. According to recent polls, the majority of the people in Taiwan support maintaining the status quo. Only a small number of people support immediate independence. China’s claim on Taiwan is genuine, and she can retake and reunify Taiwan by love, force, blockade and massive attack. What lies in store for the USA? Time will tell.

Despite all efforts, social media still active in playing out the conflicts, including the encouragement of aggression, the dissemination of propaganda and false information, the hiring of new members to militant organisations, and the expanding use of social media to silence critics. The real threat to national security is from the forces that create hype and channelize indoctrination. In this era of social media, private companies provide propaganda services that people can employ which has led to a significant portion of this activity becoming professionalised. Researchers looked at how digital warriors utilise various communication techniques to sway the public’s view, including fabricating misleading or altered media, information-driven focusing, and the use of malicious strategies like launching disinformation initiatives or harassing people on the internet. Pakistan should develop clear legislation to regulate social media, establish an independent authority, ensure user privacy and data protection, and hold platforms accountable for misuse of user data. Combat disinformation, digital literacy, account verification, and collaboration with social media companies. Ensure judicial oversight, public consultation, and international cooperation to ensure fair regulations. Protect freedom of expression while maintaining transparency and a democratic process.

The Xi-Biden Summit and the path to global stability

N a significant development for Sino-US relations, Chinese President Xi Jinping is set to meet with his US counterpart, President Joe Biden, in San Francisco this week. This face-to-face meeting is taking place on the “sidelines” of the 30th APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting, signalling mutual commitment to fostering cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region. This summit marks a critical juncture where the two world leaders are expected to delve into matters of immense strategic significance, shaping China-US relations, world peace and global development. The XiBiden summit is being eagerly anticipated worldwide and it unfolds as the two major global powers navigate through a landscape of intense competition across various sectors. This upcoming meeting marks the first direct interaction between the two leaders since their previous meeting in November 2022 at the G20 summit held in Bali, Indonesia. During that encounter, they managed to formulate joint resolutions aimed at tempering escalating tensions. Nonetheless, things took a frosty turn following President Biden’’s order to intercept a presumed Chinese espionage balloon that traversed the continental USA and simmering Chinese resentment over a stopover in the USA by Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen earlier this year, among other contentious issues. This was subsequently followed by the USA adding over 1,300 Chinese entities and individuals to various sanctions lists, as well as the imposition of punitive tariffs on a large array of Chinese products. Because of all these pricking matters, the Sino-US relations were pushed to the lowest ebb, with little chances of early resurrection. However, sanity prevailed. And, despite these challenges, recent months have witnessed renewed contact and increased interactions between the USA and China at different levels and in various domains, which has created a positive vibe. Just this week, Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng met with US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen in San Francisco, marking their second in-person discussion in four months. This dialogue exudes a rela-
tively pragmatic and positive atmosphere, underscoring the recent upswing in bilateral relations. Furthermore, the thawing of frozen talks on arms control and nonproliferation and a constructive dialogue on climate change signify a positive shift in the bilateral relationship. In late October, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi journeyed to Washington for extensive discussions with Secretary of State Antony Blinken and President Joe Biden, seemingly setting the stage for the upcoming Xi-Biden summit. These prominent Chinese overtures in the lead-up to the APEC summit signal a sincere attempt by China to revive relations with the U.S. For this complex yet critical relationship, the face-to-face meeting between two leaders is of paramount importance. It is a juncture that could lead to a stable future built on mutual benefit and cooperation, or veer us closer to a new Cold War. Analysts are of the view that Washington is likely to reciprocate the Chinese efforts by keeping the channels of communication open, reinforcing existing mechanisms and exploring new approaches in the realms of climate change and fentanyl control. It is imperative to recognize that while both parties strive for amicable relations, there remain issues of contention, such as the Taiwan question and the South China Sea dispute. China remains steadfast in its stance and is not expected to modify its stance on these matters. Despite persistent provocation by the Washington in the recent past, China’’s determination to stabilize ties demonstrates a profound sense of responsibility. Today’s global challenges, ranging from drug control to climate change, and conflicts in various regions, necessitate collaboration between China and the USA. It

ARELY does a day go by in which American news consumers are not being told that China is a danger to the US and nations across the globe. The Washington Post offered a recent example. Under the headline “China has acquired a global network of strategically vital ports,” the story states that in the first decade of the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), “China has already secured a significant stake in a network of global ports that are central to world trade and freedom of navigation. Although the stated goal of the investments was commercial, the US and its allies have grown increasingly concerned about the potential military implications.” Before we delve into certain language in the Washington Post report, it is important to acknowledge the potential perception of the robust US military presence worldwide, especially in light of Washington’s concerns about China’s global trade ambitions. According to one estimate, in 2021, the US operated roughly 750 military bases in 80 countries and regions. That same estimate suggested East Asia was littered with such facilities, with as many as 120 in Japan and another 73 nearby in South Korea. Can anyone look at that data and not ask about the potential military implications? In the US, few will wonder about such implications because American citizens remain convinced that their men and women in uniform are securing peace. Let’s set these claims of America’s ambitions aside and return to the aforementioned newspaper report. We will see where worries about China insert themselves into news reporting. We begin with these words: “global ports that are central to world trade and freedom of navigation.” Even the most vocal critics of the BRI acknowledge that the initiative is designed to make global trade easier and more interconnected. With that in mind, it does make sense for China to improve or create infrastructure at various ports where goods and services related to BRI efforts will pass. It goes without saying that neither you nor I would seek to build a house without first ensuring that its foundation is strong and able to withstand the structure.
Chinese President Xi Jinping told an international audience in 2017 that the Silk Road component of the BRI was rich in historical importance: “Spanning thousands of miles and years, the ancient silk routes embody the spirit of peace and cooperation, openness and inclusiveness, mutual learning and mutual benefit. The Silk Road spirit has become a great heritage of human civilization.” Donald Trump was the US president at the time. What was his response to the BRI? A corrosive and risky form of nationalism wrapped in fear and dubbed “America First.” Note that President Xi was talking about opening doors and embracing history while president Trump was slamming doors and offering ill-informed rhetoric about China. President Xi wanted to build on a firm foundation, but Trump wanted to undermine the foundation. Wouldn’t you agree that undermining the foundation would be a threat to the global order? As we return to the Washington Post story, we further understand how unnecessary suggestions about a dangerous China infect storytelling. Take a look at this phrase: “the US and its allies have grown increasingly concerned about the potential military implications.” The key word here is “potential.” Potential means something might happen. Then again, it might not. Potential is a loaded term that allows for enough wiggle room so that if some event does not actually occur, the people (or governments) that stoked any anxiety can walk away and absolve themselves of any blame. By now, you are well aware of how short-sighted nationalism and irrational fears about China have led to multiple flawed pieces of US federal legislation. The United States Innovation and Competition Act, passed in 2021, is a notable example. The bloated $250 billion bill was supposed to counter any aggressive attempts China would make in the coming years to lessen America’s leading role in upholding the global order created by the West. Critics were out there, but they could not drown out the nonstop rhetoric from one politician after another who insisted that the act was right and it was being debated at the right time. Do you think such scrutiny took place? Of course not, partly because elected politicians are not interested in seeking such answers; rather, they want to waltz into meetings with their constituents and boast that they did their part to protect America from the evil monster residing in Beijing.

Such cooperation is paramount, particularly in the context of the Asia-Pacific region and a global landscape grappling with economic stagnation and an array of pressing issues.The global political stage is marked by intermittent hotbeds of tension, exemplified by the Ukraine conflict and the Israel-Palestine conflict, each carrying the risk of escalating into worldwide conflagrations. The problem is that, on all these global hotspots, both sides have extremely divergent views. Biden and Xi will likely delve into discussions regarding the Israel-Hamas conflict, Russia’s actions in Ukraine, and the impending presidential election in Taiwan. Despite divergent stances, however, such dialogues serve as a crucial buffer to prevent
misunderstandings from escalating into conflicts. They also play a pivotal role in strategizing responses to rapidly developing or evolving crises, like preparing for potential escalations in the Israel-Hamas war or strategizing for post-conflict reconstruction in Ukraine. The Xi-Biden summit offers a chance to steer the China-US relationship, which stands as the world’s most critical bilateral tie, toward stability and improvement. The summit holds the promise of translating consensus into tangible actions and solidifying the foundations of this pivotal partnership. This meeting is not only a watershed moment for China-US relations but also a testament to the power of diplomacy in a world being in constant flux. The potential for amicable relations between these two global giants presents an opportunity to address the pressing issues of our time and foster greater stability in our ever-changing world. Striking a balance between collaboration and competition should be the paramount objective of this summit. Both leaders have the opportunity to send a positive message to the world. This message conveys that, despite fierce competition, the two major powers can steer their relationship towards stability and manage their differences judiciously. Youtube’s connections to pro-Israel lobby behind removal of lowkey’s infamous song: ‘terrorist’

N a shocking turn of events, YouTube has abruptly taken down the official music video of “Terrorist?”, a charttopping anthem by activist rapper and MintPress News contributor Lowkey. No rationale was provided, leaving the renowned artist and his record label, Global Faction, bewildered. Yet, when one considers the track poses profound inquiries about the identities of genuine “terrorists” on the global stage, particularly given the dire circumstances surrounding Tel Aviv’s current genocidal campaign in Gaza, the motives become painfully apparent. “Terrorist?” was first released on Lowkey’s groundbreaking Soundtrack to the Struggle in 2011. Back then, the US and its global vassals were thoroughly ensconced in the “War on Terror.” That ominous period’s devilish narrative held that a constant specter of menacing “Islamist extremists” lurked behind every corner of Western societies. It was a lie justifying the industrial-scale erosion of civil liberties throughout the West and a relentless onslaught of aggressive military “interventions” throughout West Asia and beyond. The track’s fearless dismantling of Western government’s definition of “terrorism” remains as pertinent and crucial today as it did back then, which surely contributes to its unwavering popularity. When YouTube inexplicably yanked the video, it had amassed a staggering five-and-a-half million views, a testament to the enduring resonance of its message. In the opening moments of “Terrorist?”, Lowkey thoughtfully recites the Oxford English Dictionary definition of terrorism as “violent or destructive acts, such as bombing, committed by groups to intimidate a population or government into granting their demands.” He then poses a provocative question: “So what’s a terrorist?” From there, Lowkey boldly challenges his audience, pondering whether major arms manufacturer BAE Systems and their “remote-controlled drones” or the improvised “homemade IEDs” present a more profound menace to human society. In the track’s second verse, Lowkey references CIA and MI6 coups and assassinations during the Cold War, focusing on Chile, Congo, and Iran – just three examples among a great many devastating Western covert actions in the Global South. He acknowledges the vast number of US and British military bases the world over. He suggests this amounts to “terrorism every day.” After all, the term’s definition is “dependent” on “who your nemesis is.” ‘POTENTIAL NIGHTMARE’: Considering Lowkey’s extensive track record of unflinching anti-Zionist advocacy, his exploration of the Palestinian struggle in “Terrorist?” is remarkably restrained. In a
sardonic touch, he merely points out that “more Israelis die from peanut allergies” than from so-called “terrorism.” He refrains from delving deeper into the subject. However, it is possible even this brief mention was central to the track’s removal by Google. Since the audacious Palestinian strike against Tel Aviv began on October 7th, Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu and his government have consistently portrayed themselves as victims of “terrorism” and engaged in a fight against it. Meanwhile, they frequently compare Hamas to ISIS or even worse. In response, Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) carry out relentless and indiscriminate carpet bombings of Gaza, destroying housing blocks, schools, and hospitals, producing a tragic human toll running to thousands, including many innocent children. As Western leaders continue to endorse this grotesque butchery, millions across the globe have risen in solidarity with Palestinians. Many are left wondering how wanton Zionist devastation of the Occupied Territories cannot fall within dictionary definitions of “terrorism.” In truth, Israeli actions align perfectly with widely received comprehension of the term, as articulated by Lowkey in his now-suppressed protest rap: “violent or destructive acts, such as bombing committed by groups in order to intimidate a population or government into granting their demands.” Additional tracks by Lowkey unapologetically denouncing Zionist oppression of the Palestinian people are now in the crosshairs for Spotify. Disturbingly, the music streaming giant appears to be collaborating with Zionist organizations to censor content challenging the status quo. This follows orchestrated efforts to cancel Lowkey’s concerts and appearances at political events in recent years, led by Zionist organizations and their operatives. As far back as 2011, the far-right and frequently legally challenged Jewish Chronicle referred to Lowkey’s endless capacity for connecting with young audiences as a “potential nightmare” for Zionism. Now, as Western leaders and media outlets rally to endorse, sometimes even preemptively, Israeli atrocities in Gaza without reservation, his platform and ability to influence listeners and viewers is surely even more “nightmarish” than ever before. As luck would have it, at least from Tel Aviv’s perspective, YouTube long ago welcomed the Anti-Defamation League, a powerful Zionist lobbying group notorious for propagating anti-Palestinian rhetoric, as one of its “trusted flaggers.” Under this program, organizations hold the authority to “report content that infringes upon their community guidelines,” facilitating swift censorship through suppression or even outright removal. This dark handshake between YouTube and Zionism surely accounts for a baffling “age restriction” imposed on a May 2019 CNN interview with Lowkey regarding that year’s Eurovision Song Contest hosted in Tel Aviv. This restriction, imposed long after the video’s upload, makes the clip unsearchable. Such treatment has also been extended to a February 2022 video from Amnesty International, in which the human rights organization painstakingly elucidates its determination that Israel’s treatment of Palestinians unequivocally meets the criteria for apartheid. Throughout Israel’s harrowing campaign in Gaza, disturbing Tel Aviv-sponsored cartoon advertisements strategically aimed at children and their parents have
loomed large. These clips, which aim to evoke sympathy for Zionists and Zionists, now preface countless YouTube videos, specifically those with a high likelihood of being viewed by younger audiences. “I was shocked to find out the music video for my song “Terrorist?” was removed by YouTube. In 2019, YouTube placed a warning on the video that it might be offensive, which hurt views as people had to sign in to watch it,” Lowkey tells MintPress. “That was bad enough, especially when there are all types of music videos on the platform with far more violent content.” “TALL ISRAELI”: The Anti-Defamation League’s designation as a “trusted flagger” for YouTube closely followed the appointment of veteran hip-hop impresario Lyor Cohen as the streaming platform’s Global Head of Music in September 2016. Cohen was once described as a “tall Israeli who runs the rap industry” by hip-hop luminary Mos Def. Cohen hails from New York City, where he was born into a family with deep ties to the Zionist terror group Haganeh, notably its infamous Harel Brigade, which played a pivotal role in the tragic 1948 Nakba—his formative years included a residence in Kfar Haim, a Zionist settlement in Palestine named after Haim Arlosoroff. Arlosoroff negotiated financial agreements with Nazi German authorities in the 1930s, facilitating the transfer of German Jews and their assets to Palestine. Cohen’s career is stained by a troubling history of censoring pro-Palestinian voices. During his tenure with iconic hip-hop label Def Jam in the late 1980s and early 1990s, he controversially decided to dismiss Professor Griff, a Muslim, from the politically charged rap group Public Enemy due to Griff’s outspoken criticism of Israel. More recently, while at Warner Music, Cohen was accused of deliberately obstructing the promotion and release of an album by Lupe Fiasco, an artist known for his unwavering support of the Palestinian struggle. It is surely no surprise then that YouTube has former Occupation Force soldiers and intelligence operatives within its ranks. For example, the platform’s marketing chief, Riki Drori, once served as a communication officer within the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF). Meanwhile, Netta Gross has held various high-ranking roles at Google and YouTube since 2012 and served as an IOF satellite officer from 2003 to 2006. Naama Citron, another stalwart at Google and YouTube, presently serves as the latter’s product strategy lead, but her background includes four years as an Israeli intelligence operative, during which she led a “professional research & analysis team of seven soldiers.” Dror Oren, the senior product director at YouTube, boasts a past as a senior IOF analyst from 1994 to 2000. To put it mildly, YouTube’s upper echelons are teeming with individuals who harbor sympathies for the Zionist cause, individuals who may be more than willing to heed, if not actively endorse, directives pertaining to the removal or suppression of videos. This takes place against the backdrop of the Israeli Occupation Forces’ ominous pursuit of a dreadful “second Nakba” in Gaza. With Elon Musk putting an end to Twitter’s own “trusted flagger” program, one that included the AntiDefamation League, it has placed limitations on the Israel lobby’s capacity to control the dissemination of content shedding light on the genocidal facets of Zionism.

HERE can be no justification for any “acts of war” in or around any healthcare facilities, senior UN officials said Sunday amidst reports that Gaza’s largest hospital has come under attack by Israeli forces as they battle the Palestinian resistance fighters in the besieged enclave. But the Israeli occupation military denied having targeted Al-Shifa Hospital, which they claim is above a Hamas command post. At the same time, the Israeli military admitted that fighting is happening “around” the hospital. UN relief and humanitarian affairs chief, Martin Griffiths, tweeted that in light of “horrific reports of attacks”, there could be “no justification for acts of war in healthcare facilities leaving them with no power, food or water and shooting at patients and civilians trying to flee. “This is unconscionable, reprehensible and must stop,” he said. “Hospitals must be places of greater safety and those who need them must trust that they are places of shelter and not of war.” Also tweeting, the head of the World Health
Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said that the WHO’s regional agency had lost contact with its contacts at Al-Shifa. “There are reports that some of those who fled the hospital have been shot at, wounded, or killed. The latest reports say the hospital was surrounded by tanks”, he wrote. “WHO is gravely concerned about the safety of health workers, hundreds of sick and injured patients, including babies on life support, and displaced people who remain inside the hospital.” WHO again called for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza “as the only way to save lives and reduce the horrific levels of suffering”, Tedros added. “WHO also calls for the sustained, orderly, unimpeded and safe medical evacuations of critically injured and sick patients. All hostages must receive appropriate medical care and be released unconditionally.” The UN’s Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for the Occupied Palestinian Territory, Lynn Hastings, reinforced the call for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, stressing that civilian infrastructure “cannot be used for military operations.” “Patients, medical staff as well as displaced people taking
shelter must be protected”, she tweeted. “Principles of proportionality and distinction must be respected.” News reports quoting a non-governmental organization representing doctors said that two premature babies have died in the last few hours at Al-Shifa after the last working generator was damaged during airstrikes. The hospital has reportedly now run out of water, food, and electricity. Latest figures from OCHA, sourcing the health ministry in Gaza – which the UN regards as reliable – report that more than 10,800 have been killed in the enclave since the 7 October attacks and more than 26,900 injured. Earlier on Saturday, the UN Children’s Fund UNICEF said that the “near total breakdown and attacks on medical and healthcare services”, particularly in northern Gaza, had left lives “hanging by a thread.” Noting that medical care at the Al-Rantisi and Al-Nasr children’s hospitals in the Strip had “reportedly almost ceased” they said only a small generator remained to power the intensive care unit. “Children’s right to life and health is being denied,” said Adele Khodr, UNICEF Middle East and North Africa Regional Director. “The protection of hospitals and de-
livery of lifesaving medical supplies is an obligation under the laws of war, and both are needed now.” Meanwhile, medical facilities in the middle and southern areas of the Gaza Strip, already overwhelmed by the sheer number of injuries that need treatment, are now having to also cope with treating the needs of an influx of hundreds of thousands of people into even more densely packed spaces, UNICEF noted. “These existing services must be supported and strengthened to deal with the increasing challenges they face”, the agency said. Children’s lives are “hanging by a thread,” said Khodr. Children in the north have “nowhere to go and are at extreme risk.” In New York, member countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) met behind closed doors to discuss the ongoing atrocities, diplomats said. The meeting, in which Pakistan was represented by the country’s deputy permanent representative to the UN, Ambassador Usman Jadoon, took place ahead of their meeting with the President of the UN General Assembly, Dennis Francis. No indication was given as to what the OIC members wished to discuss with the Assembly president.

Bangladeshi garment manufacturers shuttered 150 factories “indefinitely”, as police issued blanket charges for 11,000 workers in connection with violent protests demanding a higher minimum wage, officers said. Violent protests demanding better pay erupted last month, with at least three workers killed and more than 70 factories ransacked or damaged since, according to police. A government-appointed panel raised the sector’s wage by 56.25 percent on Tuesday to 12,500 taka, but garment workers have rejected the hike, instead demanding a 23,000 taka minimum wage. On Thursday, 15,000 workers clashed with police on a key highway and ransacked Tusuka, a top
plant, along with a dozen other factories. “Police have filed cases against 11,000 unidentified people over the attack on Tusuka garment factory,” police inspector Mosharraf Hossain told AFP. Bangladesh police often issue primary charges against thousands of people — without specifying their names — following large protests and political violence, a tactic that critics say is a way to crack down on dissent. Bangladesh’s 3,500 garment factories account for around 85 percent of its $55 billion in annual exports, supplying many of the world’s top brands including Levi’s, Zara and H&M. The head of Lebanon’s powerful Hezbollah party said on Saturday that its armed wing had used new types of weapons and struck new targets in Israel, and pledged that the front against its sworn enemy would remain active. It was Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah’s second speech since the war between Israel and Hamas began in October. In his first, he said there was a possibility of fighting on the Lebanese front turning into a fullyfledged war. On Saturday, in a televised address, he said Hezbollah had shown “a quantitative improvement in the number of operations, the size and the number of targets, as well as an increase in the type of weapons”. He said it had used a “Burkan” missile that carries an explosive payload of 300-500 kg, as well as weaponised drones for the first time. Nasrallah said the group had also struck the northern Israeli town of Kiryat Shmona for the first time in retaliation for an Israeli air strike that killed three girls and their grandmother this month. “This front will remain active,” he pledged. Soon after, Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant told troops near the Israel-Lebanon border: “Hezbollah is dragging Lebanon into a war that might happen. “It is making mistakes and … those who will pay
the price are first and foremost Lebanon’s citizens. What we are doing in Gaza we can do in Beirut.” Israeli military spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said later on Saturday that fighter jets and artillery struck many Hezbollah targets in response to its fire across the border. Israel also struck Syria in response to rocket launches there, the military said. Hezbollah, founded by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards in 1982, is the spearhead of a Tehran-backed alliance hostile to Israel and the United States. It fought a month-long war against Israel in 2006. Two South Koreans among 18 sentenced to death in Vietnam drug bust
SEOUL: Two South Koreans were among 18 people sentenced to death on drug smuggling and trafficking charges in Vietnam, state media said. The communist country has some of the toughest drug laws in the world, and is notoriously secretive about its executions. South Korean ex-police officer Kim Soon-sik, 63, and compatriot Kang Seon-hok, 30, were sentenced to death following a four-day trial in Ho Chin Minh City, state media said late Saturday. Chinese citizen Li Tian Guan, 58, and alleged Vietnamese ringleader Le Ho Vu, 36, were also handed death sentences. Fourteen other people were also handed death sentences in connection with the case, following the trial in the Family and Juvenile Court, under Ho Chi Minh City People’s Court. The group “illegally stored, trafficked and traded more than 216kg of drugs” between May and June 2020, state media news site Cong an Nhan dan reported. More than 168 kilograms (370 pounds) of “all kinds of drugs” were confiscated, it reported, without specifying what type. The narcotics were trafficked from Cambodia to Ho Chin Minh City, according to Vu, where some were “consumed domestically” while others were transported to South Korea, Cong an Nhan dan said. This came in response to the kind invitations of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (the chair of the two summits) and the State of Palestine. We express our joint stance in condemning the brutal Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip and in the West Bank, including AlQuds Al-Sharif. We affirm that Israel, and all countries of
the region, will not enjoy security and peace unless the Palestinians enjoy theirs and regain all their stolen rights. We stress that the continuation of the Israeli occupation is a threat to the security and stability of the region and to international security and peace. We condemn all forms of hatred and discrimination, and all acts that perpetuate hatred and extremism. We warn of the disastrous repercussions of the retaliatory aggression by Israel against the Gaza Strip, which amounts to a war crime, and the barbaric crimes committed also in the West Bank and Al-Quds Al-Sharif. We warn of the real danger of the expansion of the war as a result of Israel’s refusal to stop its aggression and of the inability of the Security Council to enforce international law to end this aggression. We affirm the necessity of supporting the United Nations Relief and Works for Palestine Refugees Agency (UNRWA). Support all steps taken by the Arab Republic of Egypt to confront the consequences of the brutal Israeli aggression on Gaza. We support its efforts to bring aid into the strip in an immediate, sustainable and adequate manner. Call on the UN Security Council to take a decisive and binding decision that imposes a cessation of aggression and curbs the colonial occupation authority that violates international law, international humanitarian law, and international legitimacy resolutions, the latest of which is United Nations General Assembly Resolution No. A/ES-10/L.25 dated 26/10/2023. Inaction is considered a complicity that allows Israel to continue its brutal aggression that kills innocent people, children, the elderly, and women, and turns Gaza into ruin.

Pakistan Industrial and Traders Associations Front (PIAF) has said that beside increasing exports and controlling imports the government will have to take administrative measures, as a large demand of cash dollars are seen in the market. PIAF Chairman Faheemur Rehman Saigol said that massive fall of rupee value continued to damage the economy, as the Pakistani currency continued its slide, reaching more than one month low above Rs286 against the US dollar in the inter-bank market this week. In a statement issued here today, he observed that the rupee’s slide is attributed to the increased demand for foreign currency in the domestic economy, primarily driven by higher sales of automobiles, cement, petroleum oil products, and the repatriation of profits by foreign companies operating in the country. He urged the government to control volatility of rupee against the US dollar, as the industrial revival and economic growth is not possible without stability of local currency. He said that the massive devaluation of currency fuelled inflationary pressures, adding that two major factors contributed to the price hike. First, the prices of food and commodities as well as fuel prices skyrocketed in the international market, and second, the depreciation of the exchange rate by 30 percent also led to higher inflation, he added. Faheem Saigol argued that this devaluation of the currency was dictated by the IMF through prior actions and it has nothing to do with macroeconomic fundamentals. He said that there was a complete breakdown of economic policy making, as the country’s fiscal policy had become subservient to monetary and exchange rate policies.

Islamabad police, specifically the Loi Bher police, are facing demands to initiate strict action against a fraudster who defrauded a citizen of a substantial amount of his hard-earned money. The complainant, identified as Muhammad, alleged that he entrusted an amount of Rs1.5 million to Syed Asjad Hussain Shah for purported business activities. In exchange, Asjad Shah issued a cheque of the same amount as a guarantee for the transaction. However, when Muhammad urgently needed the funds and requested the latter to have his money back, Mr Shah allegedly began evading the issue. Attempting to cash the cheque provided by Mr Shah, Muhammad encountered another setback as the bank concerned dishonored the cheque, citing a lack of cash, which raised suspicions of fraudulent intent. China and Pakistan have common interests in jointly safeguarding strategic sea lanes in regions like the Indian Ocean, where piracy, terrorism and other dangerous activities pose threats to the maritime transport of energy and goods, Wei Dongxu, a Chinese military expert said on Sunday. The largest-ever joint exercise between the Chinese and Pakistani navies began in Pakistan yesterday as the two countries continue to enhance their capabilities in jointly safeguarding strategic sea lanes as well as regional peace and stability, experts told Global Times on Sunday. The Sea Guardian-3 joint maritime exercise kicked off with an opening ceremony at the Karachi Naval Dockyard. Participating forces from the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy include the Type 052D guided missile de-
stroyer Zibo, the Type 054A guided missile destroyers Jingzhou and Linyi, with Pakistani media reporting that a conventional attack submarine and a submarine support ship along with a marines corps detachment from the PLA Navy are also involved. Under the common aim of jointly responding to maritime security threats, the nine-day exercise in the waters and airspace of the northern Arabian Sea will organize training courses including formation maneuvering, VBSS (visit, board, search and seizure), helicopter cross-deck landing, joint search and rescue, joint anti-submarine and main gun shooting, plus professional exchanges and mutual visits. It is the third and the largest edition of the Sea Guardian exercises. The first edition was held in 2020 in the northern Arabian Sea waters, and the second edition was held in 2022 in waters off Shanghai. “The exercise is dedicated to enhance the all-weather strategic cooperative partnership, boost defense cooperation and
deepen professional cooperation,” said Rear Admiral Liang Yang, commander at a PLA Navy base and the general director of the exercise from the Chinese side, said at the opening ceremony. Liang said he hopes the two navies can further enhance their joint operational capabilities in dealing with maritime security threats and safeguard maritime peace. Indian Ocean, where piracy, terrorism and other dangerous activities pose threats to the maritime transport of energy and goods. Joint drills like these also safeguard the ChinaPakistan Economic Corridor, an important part of the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative, and comprehensively contribute to the peace and stability in the Indian Ocean region, an expert familiar with China-Pakistan military cooperation, told the Global Times under the condition of anonymity. The Ministry of Planning, Development and Special Initiatives has unveiled a comprehensive blueprint for tackling climate change-related challenges while enhancing sustainable development under the National Climate Change Policy (NCCP). Under the policy, a National Climate Finance Strategy (NCFS) has been prepared to identify sectoral priorities and scale climate finance, the ministry said in a news release here on Sunday. “This NCFS is a cornerstone in Pakistan’s commitment to the Paris Agreement, focusing on leveraging private sector engagement, international climate finance and carbon markets,” the ministry said. In 2021, the government approved the NCCP to pursue sustained economic growth by addressing the challenges of climate change. It was to integrate climate change policy with other inter-related national policies and focus on pro-poor gender-sensitive adaptation while promoting mitigation to the extent possible in a cost-effective manner and building climate-resilient infrastructure and others. Pakistan is among the countries in the world that are most affected by weather/climaterelated hazards such as floods, landslides, droughts, heat waves, extreme colds, and cyclones. Significantly, the Sustainable Finance Bureau (SFB) has been established to revolutionize climate finance. The SFB will reorient the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) towards sustainable finance, with 20% (Rs925 billion) of new PSDP schemes in FY2023-24 being green. This initiative is expected to qualify for concessional climate funds, enhancing Pakistan’s capacity to meet its climate targets. Pakistan requires $348 billion to achieve systemic resilience between 2023 and 2030, as per the World Bank’s 2023 report. This investment, the ministry said, was crucial for climate-proofing Pakistan’s development trajectory and ensuring the well-being of its people. The initiative also underscored the importance of a Climate Responsive Public Investment Framework (CRPIF), integrating climate considerations into the planning and execution of all development projects.

Worried about their long disappearance, their parents started their search outside their house, but could not find them. Suddenly, one of the members of the family caught a sight of an empty trunk lying at the corner of a room. He opened the box to find three children dead. The whole area was devastated by this gruesome and heartrending incident. On getting information, a rescue team reached the spot and shifted the dead bodies of the children to hospital for autopsy. The children were identified as two-year-old Zohan, six-year-old Saira and seven-year-old Faria.
The Supreme Court has constituted a three-member bench for hearing of an application challenging results of the census 2023 in Balochistan on Monday (today). The SC’s three-member bench, to be headed by Justice Ijazul Ahsan, will take up the petition for hearing, filed by Hasan Kamran. The petition had initially challenged the census results in Balochistan in the Balochistan High Court (BHC) and moved to the Supreme Court after the BHC rejected the petition. The petitioner pleaded to the apex court to declare the Balochistan High Court’s August 29 decision as void. According to the petition, the population of Balochistan was reported to be around 21.7 million till the final phase of the census process.
However, in the final report of the Pakistan Bureau of Statistic (PBS) approved by the Council of Common Interests (CCI) in its meeting, the population of Balochistan was reduced to 14.89 million. Petitioner said that the bureau of statistics from its official accounts regularly issued contradictory statements. BHC had given the decision, which was contradic-
tory to facts, petitioner argued. A petition of the Supreme Court Bar has been pending against the Council of Common Interests. The Balochistan High Court dismissed our petition on the basis of the pending plea of the SC Bar, according to the petition. “The Supreme Court Bar Association’s plea has been entirely different from our petition”.

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) on Sunday expressed its apprehensions over the growing sense of powerlessness among ordinary people amid economic deprivation and unemployment, the watchdog said in a statement. The 37th annual general meeting of HRCP held here discussed that the most serious victims of political engineering in the run-up to the general elections have been democracy, electoral politics and the rule of law. “Additionally, the establishment’s incursions into civic and political spaces have damaged the prospect of free, fair and credible elections. Concerns over contentious delimitations must also be taken into account by the ECP [Election Commission of Pakistan],” the statement said. In the statement, the HRCP condemned the “continuing curbs on freedom of expression, not only have journalists been summarily removed for expressing dissenting opinions, but many have also been prevented from reporting on recent events” in certain areas. “HRCP is well aware of the pressures on the media and is determined to hold the state accountable for such restrictions as the elections approach. It also demanded the removal of the chair of the Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappearances for poor track record. The statement drew attention of the relevant authorities towards the state of law and order situation, especially in the kachha areas of Sindh and Punjab, amid reports that vulnerable Hindu families were being compelled to migrate. “The provincial governments must heed to residents’ credible suspicion that influential persons are involved in drawing financial or political benefits from the deteriorating security situation,” the HRCP said in the statement. It also expressed its concerns over the rise in the number of police encounters and reminded the state that extrajudicial killings, torture and enforced disappearances were crimes against humanity and could not be justified under any circumstances. Also the HRCP demanded the mainstreaming of the newly-merged districts of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP) without any delay and the empowerment of the local bodies in these tribal districts. It also expressed concern over the revival of the Fata [the former Federally-Administered Tribal Areas] Tribunal. It called on the government to monitor the situation in Parachinar, Kurram district, and protect people’s right to security by preventing further violence there. It also raised alarm over the allotment of collectively owned land in Gilgit-Baltistan to private individuals. The statement noted that the rising number of suicides, especially in Sindh, South Punjab and Gilgit, were a cause for concern, given that many cases were connected to rising poverty and economic deprivations. “The HRCP is especially alarmed by rights violations against vulnerable groups.”
Road accidents claim 345 lives in Lahore during current year

More than 80,000 traffic accidents have occurred in Lahore this year, resulting in the deaths of 345 people. The majority of the victims were motorcyclists. The top five areas identified as hotspots for traffic accidents are Nishtar Colony, Kahna, Multan Road, Harbanspora, and Township. The traffic police have identified 50 locations in the city as hotspots, pointing to one-way violations and defects in road engineering as the two primary causes of the ongoing increase in accidents. According to traffic police officials, 90% of accidents at hotspots were caused by one-way traffic and other violations. Traffic police officials have appealed to citizens to show responsibility on the roads, as an accident is happening every minute and 25 seconds in Lahore. The majority of the accidents occurred during the day, with the peak hours being between 8am and 10am and 5pm and 7pm. The most common type of accident was a collision between two vehicles, followed by a single vehicle collision and a hit-and-run. The main causes of accidents were speeding, reckless driving, and one-way violations. The majority of the victims were male and between the ages of 20 and 30. The sharp increase in road accidents in Lahore is a cause for concern. The traffic police are taking a number of measures to reduce the number of accidents, but the cooperation of citizens is also essential. By following the traffic rules and driving safely, we can all help to make our roads safer for everyone.
Agriculture shows 73pc growth with rice, sesame seed exports’ surge: PBF ISLAMABAD

Pakistan’s exports have increased by 13.5% in October 2023, reaching a total of $2.7 billion, while trade deficit also witnessed 4.5% decreased during the same period, according to the Pakistan Business Forum (PBF). PBF’s Vice President Chaudhry Ahmad Jawad claimed that overall agriculture sector grew by 73% in October, with rice and sesame seed exports increasing significantly. This, he said, shows that the country’s ex-
ports are diversifying and that the agricultural industry is strong. Jawad also said that Pakistan needs to increase its services exports, particularly in information and communication technology (ICT), in order to reduce its balance of payment deficit. He pointed out that India’s ICT exports crossed the $140 billion mark in fiscal year 2022-23, doubling in the past five years. In contrast, Pakistan’s ICT exports peaked at $2.6 billion in fiscal year 2021-22, but have not grown since then. Jawad said that the main reason for the
difference between Pakistan and India is the availability of skilled labor. India has focused on technology and engineering in recent decades, which is paying off, while Pakistan’s education standards have declined. He said that there is little that can be done to correct this situation in the short to medium term, but that Pakistan still has a lot of room to grow its ICT sector. Jawad said that many IT companies in Pakistan complain that most IT graduates are not skilled enough to help generate exports. He suggested that this could be addressed by offering crash courses to

He also said that the PBF believes that Pakistan does not have a shortage of talent, but that the technology sector is not creating enough demand and that it is very difficult to bring business to the country.
