Particular attention must be paid to the dengue menace, for while matters are not as bad as when it first spread devastation some years ago in Punjab, the floods seems to have paved the way for its dangerous revival Floodwaters are clear of larvae when floods hit, but as they rede they leave behind pools of water Such water is not drained, and is left to stagnate This is where the aedeas aegypti the anopheles vector, comes in, finding such water an ideal breeding ground As soon as the larvae hatch, the disease begins to spread The Punjab government thus has little time to launch a vigorous campaign against the larvae, which is its primary duty in this emergency

At the same time, it cannot afford to ignore the polio threat Because Pakistan and Afghanistan are the last two countries to have polio they have been the subjects of vaccination campaigns however, the detection of poliovirus samples in cities where it had disappeared indicated that there was the possibility of a fresh outbreak, and all of the previous effort going waste To stop that, it is essential for the provincial governments to arrange for vigorous vaccination campaigns immediately, and refuse to hide behind the floods as an excuse Otherwise, the human loss, in terms of persons crippled, may well be more than can be imagined the legac y of late Hameed Nizami Arif Nizami (Late)

rate of gross capital formation than Pakistan a sign of a country that’s unable to build the infrastructure it needs to support a growing population

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres’ just concluded visit to Pakistan was an indication of how seriously he took the devastation of the floods, but it will be the job of Mr Sharif to convince the UN’s members, particularly the richer countries, to help Pakistan in its time of need however, this is not likely to be the only topic raised during the various meetings Mr Sharif will hold with counterparts on the sidelines of the Assembly Though by no means arranged yet, it is hoped that a meeting between Mr Sharif and US President Joe Biden will also be arranged

The previous government, that of Imran Khan, had particularly damaged relations with the USA by the accusation that the USA was behind the conspiracy which had ultimately led to his fall from office Mr Bhutto Zardari and Ms Khar will thus play a crucial role in repairing ties The USA will play an important role in persuading the IMF to revise its harsh conditionalities to help Pakistan create room for flood rehabilitation Already, there is talk of debt swaps for climate assistance While it may be too early for concrete assistance, at least the conversation can be furthered Mr Sharif need not be overawed by the feats of oratory his predecessor is supposed to have performed at previous General Assemblies he is the Prime Minister of a country which has been badly hit by floods, and not only must he comport himself accordingly, but he must ensure that his team does so too

Consequently, Ukraine will experience a civil war whose intensity will escalate over time Some an alysts are so confident of Ukraine’s impending col lapse that, regardless of Putin’s triumph or defeat, they feel Ukraine will inevitably fall into destruction, and its current leaders will either be assassinated or seek shelter in europe But it is true that Ukraine, as a whole, has already entered a sort of death trap The country must pay for it

The conflict between these two ideologies will continue with absolute certainty Russia may formally withdraw, but it does not mean that it will cease all interference in Ukraine Russia, on the contrary, will provide arms to its supporters just as the West does now to anti Russians

After record floods, now Pakistan has to worry about economy’ indicated in this regard ‘More than 1,300 people have so far died, with 81 out of 160 districts in the country directly affected by the floods, leaving at least 33 million people homeless, figures which are ex pected to rise in the coming days But beyond the human losses, the country s economic managers have the most challenging task ahead as floods ravaged the country’s road and communication network, damaged an incalculable number of houses, and destroyed mil lions of hectares of crops The agriculture sector makes up nearly a fourth of Pakistan’s gross domestic product at 22 7 percent As per a UN Food and Agriculture Organization August 29 report almost 80 percent of crops in Sindh, which produces roughly 30 percent of Pakistan s total cotton output, were de stroyed Close to 70 percent of Pakistan’s textile in dustry, an important source of employment and foreign exchange, uses the cotton produced in the country Since nearly 35 percent of that is produced in Sindh province the sector is girding itself for a shortage’

The latter two point at what should be the thrust of his speech, which is the urgent need of assistance for Pakistan to repair the damage of this summer s catastrophic floods

Moreover, the severe impact of floods could also be gauged in terms of likely economic output lost to the country whereby while an economic growth rate for the current fiscal year was earlier projected at around five percent, which is reportedly likely to fall by three percent A recent Bloomberg article Pakistan s floods may reveal China as a fair weather friend’ indicated in this regard ‘the heaviest rains in decades have caused more than 1 300 deaths (the number is expected to rise sharply) and upended the lives of more than 30 million economic growth forecasts have been cut by more than half, to 2 3 percent; with rice and cotton crops ruined, even that is looking optimistic ’

It is undeniable that Russia s reputation as one of the world’s most powerful countries is in question due to the Ukrainian military’s fierce resistance If Russia were to take over the entire Ukraine at this moment, international politics would be drastically altered But another thing here is that a country can not be occupied at will where the whole Western world supports it, as it does Ukraine

looming debt crisis, an overall sharply and deeply depreciated currency against the US dollar over many months now, August CPI inflation at 27 3 percent at its highest level during the last four and a half decades while the pandemic continues In addition, the coun try has been hit by possibly the most devastating flood in its history mainly at the back of unprece dented levels of rainfall, and to some extent glacier melting at a higher rate, with clear climate change footprints behind both causes

Since the beginning of the war, the West has pledged to support Ukraine Often, they cooperated with arms and weapons however, the West will not fight the entire war even if they wanted to, they could not regularly supply arms Because Western arms producers are already under pressure to fulfill Ukraine’s armament demands In addition, oil prices in Western countries, especially in the USA, have hit their highest level in several years, which economists view as detrimental to all nations At some point, Western countries will be preoccupied with their own

Unfortunately, while it has been a number of weeks since the floods hit, yet international support up till now has been quite lukewarm A September 10 Bloomberg published article ‘UN Chief asks World for ‘massive’ help in flood hit Pakistan’ highlighted some of the international support numbers and actions that fall extremely lower than the billions of US dollars, and the extent of action needed, for the flood relief/re habilitation effort The article pointed out in this regard ‘Planeloads of aid from the United States, the United Arab emirates and other countries have begun arriv ing but Guterres said there s more to be done The U N chief ’s trip comes less than two weeks after Guterres appealed for $160 million in emergency fund ing to help those affected by the monsoon rains and floods On Friday, the first planeload arrived from the USA, which Washington says is part of an upcom ing $30 million in assistance USAID announced an additional $20 million Friday in humanitarian as sistance for Pakistan, further enhancing U S pledges Later Guterres directed his words at the international community, saying that by some estimates, Pakistan needs about $30 billion to recover from the floods ’

economic crisis Meanwhile, Republican leaders in the USA have called for a reduction in aid to Ukraine and asked President Joe Biden to focus more on do mestic issues than on wars abroad

And if the West continues to provide arms to Ukraine in this way it is also a question of whether they will face a shortage of weapons in the future if there is a major conflict with them Because the cur rent situation between the USA and China over Tai wan could escalate at any time, and once a conflict develops, the entire western world will focus its at tention on it Consequently the countries will not be able to assist Ukraine at that moment

Lack of adequate infrastructural investments over the years, and inadequate natural disaster preparedness in terms of capacity especially when a massive earth quake hit the country in 2005, and a large scale flood in 2010, both doing immense damage to life and livelihood leaves a lot to be desired in terms of insti tutional, and organizational reform, and prioritizing investments in this direction A recent Bloomberg published article ‘Pakistan could have averted its cli mate catastrophe’ pointed out in this regard ‘Some of the most important lines of defence against floods are colonial era projects such as the vast Sukkur Bar rage a system of dams and canals that divert the wa ters of the Indus to irrigate the arid southern Sindh Province Many are in a poor state of repair thanks to years of underinvestment in maintenance; corrup tion; and disputes between Pakistan’s four provinces about the allocation of water and funds The Tarbela and Mangla reservoirs on either side of Islamabad have become so choked with silt sweeping down from the himalayas that they re losing their ability to swal low up floodwaters and prevent inundation further downstream The underinvestment that has led to this state of affairs is chronic Among the world s top 20 economies by population, only egypt has a lower

As a result, Ukraine will become alienated And by then everything from the armaments to the do mestic political, economic, and societal structures, will have fallen down In other words, Russia is doing the same thing in a slightly different manner which would have been met if carried out directly, with sev eral domestic and international barriers The effect of current planning will be exponentially more signifi cant a bit like ‘more profit with less capital’

h e ongoing Russia Ukraine situation shows no signs of normalization Instead they are spending their time attacking and repelling each other Last August 24 was Ukraine’s Independence Day and it was also six months since the Russian invasion It is esti mated that over thirteen thousand people have lost their lives in this ongoing war however Ukraine’s military capability cannot be compared to Russia’s Because Russia is considered one of the world’s su perpowers Therefore why is Russia slowly pushing Ukraine to the brink of collapse through a series of minor attacks? Is it part of a Russian strategy?

e UN General Assembly will be meeting live in New York for the first time since 2019, with the 2020 and 2021 UNGAs being held virtually because of the covid 19 pandemic Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is taking a team of three ministers the minister of state for foreign affairs, and several officials, on September 19, when he is expected to reach New York, so as to address the General Assembly the next day he is also scheduled to address a summit on educational reforms, as well as attend meetings on climate change and food security

It also shows a lack of provision of climate finance from rich, advanced countries over the years, when clearly the climate change footprint has been becoming all the more visible in the country towards which it has little contribution, while most of the global warming has come from rich, advanced countries

In addition to loss and injury to life agriculture and livestock, the mainstay of people’s livelihoods in most of the flood affected areas, not to mention the damage done to roads, railroads, bridges, hospitals, homes, and schools, among other infrastructure, has been immense A recent ‘Al Jazeera’ published article

P M a t U N

In the midst of all this catastrophe, the visit of United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, to Pakistan, has indeed been very timely and important, especially his comments in a joint press conference with the Prime Minister of Pakistan, where he not only made a call from rich countries to both provide mean ingful financial support to the country, but also indi cated that it was a matter of justice to support the country through meaningful debt relief, given global warming was mainly being caused by rich, advanced countries, while Pakistan contributed minimally to wards climate change and global warming he indi cated in this regard ‘ I want to say a few words to the international community Pakistan needs massive finan cial support to respond to this crisis that have cost ac cording to some estimates I’ve heard today, about $30 billion, and counting And debt support is entirely nec essary and it is not a matter of solidarity it’s a matter of justice Pakistan has not contributed in a meaningful way to climate change The level of emissions of this country is relatively low but Pakistan is one of the most dramatically impacted countries by climate change

started but has not been seen to conduct any major at tacks however, attacks occur on a regular basis even on this day of independence Russian forces launched a missile attack on a Ukrainian train station and a nearby residential area, causing the deaths of 25 peo ple In this regard Russia is essentially turning the country towards collapse Meanwhile, Ukraine’s stockpile has been rapidly decreasing It’s not like nothing happened to Russia; it also suffered signifi cant losses But Ukraine’s situation is worse than Rus sia’s The country now relies on Western arms support however Ukraine was once the world s third largest nuclear armed nation But after signing the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty, Ukraine handed over some weapons to Russia in return for the price of fuel gas imported from it and destroyed some of them in 1996

h

Though that meeting is not certain, Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Minister of State hina Rabbani Khar will go on to Washington on September 25 where they will meet US officials, being scheduled to remain there until September 27 It is hoped that they will continue the work of the Shehbaz government of repaiaring ties with the USA

So, if Russia prolongs this war, Ukraine will in evitably will become a shambles But even if Russia leaves Ukraine in a short period of time, the conflict inside Ukraine will remain Because the Ukrainian people have already been divided into two groups One is anti Russian, while the other is pro Russian

Ukraine Crisis: Russia playing a ‘slow poison’ game?

It is noteworthy that Russia has been seen to con tinue small scale attacks on Ukraine since the war

Nevertheless many analysts are trying to figure out the reason for Russia’s stumbling in the midst of the strong Ukrainian solid resistance It is supposed to be a Russian strategy The longer the Ukrainian army resists the Russians, the greater their fighting confidence will be As a result, Ukraine will be totally involved in the desire to win the war And one day they will require more arms and soldiers than they currently have Moreover, there is a fear of food shortages due to rising commodity costs Furthermore Ukraine will have to struggle to provide everything to its citizens If their demands are not fulfilled, the fall of the ruling government of Ukraine like Sri Lanka will be in evitable And once this happens, many analysts believe that Russia will either put its ideologues in power or, through the dividing of Ukraine, will complete the process of creating multiple autonomous nations

With more than 1300 people killed by the floods where around one third have been children, life and livelihood have been severely affected An article ‘Pak istan has been hit by its worst floods in recent memory published in The Economist recently highlighted the scale of devastation: ‘One third of the country is un derwater; the government has declared 72 out of 160 districts to be disaster zones The volume of rainfall is staggering Some 700mm (28 inches) have been dumped on the south eastern province of Sindh nearly six times the 30 year annual average Balochistan, a vast, arid province normally untouched by the mon soon has received five times its annual average

it is absolutely essential that this is recognized by the international community, especially by those that have more contributed to climate change, and that effective solidarity effective justice is now shown by mobilizing massive support for relief, for rehabilitation after these devastating impacts of the monsoon, plus the ac celerated melting of the glaciers ’

Dr Ishrat husain, in his book Pakistan: The economy of an elitist State had said that Pakistan was expected to face grave economic insolvency and distress in the future and that might lead to internal and external cash liquidity crunch, sluggish growth along with spiralling debts

The 2010 floods had devastating effects as well Roads and bridges were swept away within seconds The same happened again, but with a more frightening might The government and the authorities, such as the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) have done nothing in the last 12 years on how to tackle the problem

Most of the properties that we saw getting swept away in the recent floods were built close to the river Lack of forests is one of the most important reasons for such floods Trees are being cut down in large numbers and this leads to landslides Besides, the force of floodwater does not get checked adding to the force with which it hits whatever and whoever comes in its way

The country is bearing the brunt of climate change and the government has no policy or plan in place on how to tackle it The worst part is even when the next tragedy happens, there will be no plan in place to manage it People will continue to suffer because the authorities refuse to learn

We were told that humanity is in danger due to climate change and global warming and one of the most lethal factors of climate change is carbon emission and the usage of coal is the biggest source of carbon emission This is true scientifically We must avoid using fossil sources for producing energy to avoid the al ready existing danger faced by our earth Since the Rio de Janeiro moot took place in 1992, the West has been monitoring developing countries and discouraging the usage of coal and other fossil fuels europe even decided to stop producing vehicles that use fossil fuels and new assembly plants for producing motor ized vehicles (electric vehicles) are encour aged all over europe

The top 20 posts by views on Facebook in the most recent report are overwhelmingly reposted memes that were originally created for other platforms A lot of the pages responsible for them belong to Instagram viral content accounts with names like Ideas365 or Factsdai lyy There are two pro Johnny Depp meme reposts on the list, with nearly 100 million views between them Two of the 20 top viewed posts are not listed on the re port because Meta removed them for violating its poli cies on intellectual property or inauthentic behavior

h e most viewed post on Facebook last quarter was a 69 joke, featuring reposted footage from an episode of the TV show Family Feud The post, originally an Instagram Reel, had more than 52 million views on Facebook, according to Meta’s quarterly report on the most widely viewed content on the platform in the US It was just one of many spammy meme reposts to feature in Meta s own list of its top content on the platform

The main issue here is not necessarily one of safety: the most popular content on Facebook feels more like boomer bait than it does something designed to attract engagement from the younger audiences Meta is court ing But as Lala notes, relatively benign meme accounts and potentially harmful accounts that are posting memes in order to drive attention somewhere specific are diffi cult to distinguish on the surface

MORE MONEY, MORE PROBLEMS: The deal will provide the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism with at least $100 billion annually Does it really make sense to provide billions to Iran as it plots to kill Americans, attack our allies, and continue its support for terrorist entities in the region?

This quarterly report, first launched a year ago, was created in part so that Meta could tell the story it wanted to tell about Facebook: that its users are not bombarded constantly with extreme political content, as researchers and journalists using CrowdTangle, a Meta owned tool, have found But in trying to do so it has demonstrated something else: the most popular content on Facebook is often awful, recycled generic memes

Late in August, AIPAC publicized a pol icy memorandum that they disseminated on Capitol hill, outlining their “concerns” about the deal Not coincidentally, a few days later reports emerged that a bipartisan but majority Democratic, letter from the house of Representatives, spearheaded by prominent Iran hawk Josh Gottheimer (D NJ) was being sent to the White house, ex pressing similar concerns

THE EQUATION IS SIMPLE Sanctions have hurt ordinary Iranians The only coun try in the region that has a nuclear arsenal is Israel and unlike Iran it has never admitted its possession of that arsenal, much less al lowed any international body to inspect its weapons facilities When the JCPOA was in place, Iran stuck to it, and the United States violated it, even before it abandoned the deal entirely The restoration of the deal will do nothing more than allow Iran to do some business, but significant sanctions, having nothing to do with the nuclear issue will re main in place

The supposed “weakness” of this deal as compared to 2015 is due to its being shorter And that does make a difference But the rea son the deal is shorter is because Donald Trump with the full throated encourage ment of groups like AIPAC and the Founda tion for the Defense of Democracies, and, of course, the Israeli government tore up the deal four years ago The result has been four years of escalating tensions, Iran gradually increasing its stockpile of weapons grade uranium and no gains for anyone

even AIPAC describes this provision of money to Iran as “a combination of in creased oil revenue, renewed access to foreign reserves, and a general economic improve ment ” The Iranian people have suffered a great deal under the weight of the sanctions

DEBUNKING AIPAC’S ARGUMENTS:

In sum, this complaint of AIPAC’s is only partially based on fact, and where it is, that is the case only because the JCPOA has not been in place for the past four years That was the U S doing, not Iran s To the con trary even after the U S broke the deal Iran was very slow to resume its nuclear work, in a desperate attempt to work with europe to keep the deal alive And despite that be trayal, Iran is still willing to try to re enter an agreement that might very well be broken again by the next American president

AIPAC’s argument about Russia is the emptiest one they raise and is clearly there to raise the specter of the highly unpopular Russia over the deal But if Russia can play a constructive role in any process it is a pos itive and any open channel of communica tion can only enhance the possibility of diplomacy on Ukraine as well

AIPAC argues that Russia could decide that the U S was not in compliance with the deal and simply send the material back to Iran This, too, is no different than what came before, but more to the point, if Rus sia decided it wanted Iran to have the ma terial to build a nuclear weapon something that, despite the al

attention into grifts, extremism, and disinformation, says Karan Lala a fellow and the editor in chief at the In tegrity Institute, an organization founded by former em ployees of Facebook’s integrity team to research and advise the public on the inner workings of social media platforms Lala recently published research into the spam economy on Facebook

Actually, the inspections regime that Iran agreed to in 2015, and which would be fully restored under a revived agreement is with out precedent No country has endured, much less agreed to, such an expansive inspection program In exchange for this Iran is being “granted” the ability to sell its own oil; par ticipate within the restraints imposed by other sanctions unrelated to the nuclear pro gram and which stayed in place after 2015 and would also stay in place under the poten tially revived deal in global markets; and would be opened to some investment that is

Ideas365 and Factsdailyy appear similar at first: they are both Instagram meme accounts getting enormous amounts of views on Facebook They each post about a half dozen short videos a day Their content is generic But looking closer Lala noted some key differences: Factsdai lyy’s bio contains contact information, and each post credits the source of the meme it’s reposting At a cursory glance, this account is likely just a normal old meme account

AIPAC argues that doing this again would somehow empower Russia, but its ex planation for how this empowerment would come about is nearly non existent Russia is a major world power Its receipt of Iran’s uranium in 2015 did nothing to change its status nor would it now

By contrast, Ideas365 the page that posted the Fam ily Feud video at the top of Facebook’s most viewed list for this quarter drives traffic to a site selling courses for making money selling things on Amazon While the ac count does credit the source of some memes, it’s using the attention those memes grab to advertise questionable services Its featured stories advertise a “mentorship” pro gram that promises to teach students how to create auto mated Instagram accounts for profit The user behind the account mentions owning over 250 theme pages on Instagram and earning ‘hundreds of thousands a month’ from their phone This is also complete with ostentatious videos of the user ’s many luxury cars ” Lala added

currently either barred by sanctions or dis couraged by the threat of new ones In other words, the ability to do business

we approach election season, it is important to note that this attention could be just as easily directed toward dis information or other harms using similar tactics ” Last year, MIT Technology Review revealed the extent to which global content farms have become adept at using Meta’s own incentive structures to profit directly from popular content, whether that’s memes about a celebrity breakup or misinformation on a divisive issue

STRENGTHENING RUSSIA: Russia will play a major role in implementing and guar anteeing this agreement

Meta also provides data on the top viewed external links and domains In this report, five of the top 20 links were removed for inauthentic behavior (the top link was, of course to TikTok) And the list of most widely viewed domains perhaps the part of this report that is designed to most directly counter CrowdTangle s data showed a mix of competitors like YouTube and TikTok main stream news sites, and GoFundMe “We’ve been testing new ways to reduce clickbait, engagement bait, and spam Meta said in a blog post accompanying the re port “While we’re seeing improvements from these tests, we will need to continually evaluate and refine our approach given how spam operators try to adapt their tactics to evade our new ways of detecting them ”

S R A e L and its proxies in Washington have stepped up their efforts to pro mote war against Iran The stepped up effort comes in response to the in creasingly positive outlook for the United States and Iran to agree on conditions for a return to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) commonly referred to as the Iran Nuclear Deal

The sheer vindictiveness, even sadism, of this obsessive desire of Israel’s and AIPAC’s to make them suffer even more is something any decent person should oppose

There’s nothing inherently wrong with being a spammy meme page, of course The harm here isn t that the account is using short form videos on Meta to get people to sign up for an expensive course, says Lala: “As

It’s important to examine the specifics of AIPAC s arguments Their strategy, and Is rael’s, is going to depend on whipping up fear, especially among Democrats, that the Biden administration is giving Iran too much and getting back so little that it will free Iran to both construct a nuclear weapon and ex pand its support for militant activities throughout the Middle east

The alternative is war, and that, unlike a return to the JCPOA, holds at least the possi bility of forcing regime change in Iran Such a war would very likely make the invasion of Iraq look like a minor skirmish, and the po tential effects on the Mideast and Persian Gulf region, not to mention the global econ omy, are too terrible to even contemplate

So, the choice is clear either restore the deal move into a future without a nuclear armed Iran, and allow the Iranian people some measure of relief; or maintain the Trump sanctions and continue on the path which leads to, at the very least, an Iran that is a nuclear threshold state and at most a nu clear power and a regional war involving Is rael, Saudi Arabia, and, one way or another, the United States, whose leaders continue to chase their neoconservative dreams of regime change in Iran

The argument AIPAC makes is largely the same one it has been making for more than seven years, and it is no more substantive now than it has been over these years As has been the case all along, it is an argument that exists outside of reality, in an alternate uni verse where it is possible to get an even better deal for the United States and Israel than the JCPOA, when it is clear to anyone looking se riously at the question that no such deal exists now or can be brought into existence

liance between the two countries, is not the case and Russia has never given any indi cation that this could change it could sim ply send some of its own AIPAC argues that in three years UN Security Council Resolution 2231, the reso lution that enshrined the JCPOA and which allows any of the countries to call for the reimposition of U N sanctions on Iran if Iran was determined to be in major violation of the JCPOA will expire, and that to continue it, the U S will need the support of Russia and China This is a particularly weak argu ment, as it is not materially affected by Rus sia taking in Iran’s uranium On the other hand, having Russia invested in the process strengthens the possibility that they will want it to continue Moreover, it’s not like the U S would be sacrificing anything here: the snapback provision is a tool available only to parties to the JCPOA Unlike Iran and all the other 2015 signatories, the United States is no longer a party to the deal

MIT Technology RevIew

Let’s examine AIPAC’s arguments one by one ShORTeR AND WeAKeR: Because of sunsetting restrictions and Iranian advance ment in its enrichment capabilities, a new agreement will be shorter and weaker than the original nuclear deal In essence, we will be paying more and getting less

In the original deal, Iran agreed to send its stockpile of highly enriched uranium to Russia It would do so again in a revived deal That makes a lot of sense, as Russia has the technical expertise to handle it properly, Iran has a solid relationship with the Russians and Russia has no use for the Iranian uranium, as it has more than enough of its own

i

It’s not necessarily surprising that reposting already popular memes gets views on Facebook, but “it’s imper ative to monitor where the attention garnered by this con tent is directed” in order to catch attempts to funnel this

Platforms do not need to completely eradicate spam in order to make a meaningful difference on this and ex pecting Meta to turn Facebook into a spam free zone is very unrealistic “given how incentivized and adversarial spam actors are Lala said I don t take issue with the fact that spam content exists on Facebook, but the fact that it consistently makes it into the most viewed content on the platform is a real problem he adds

Let s be clear about this No one is pro viding” Iran with money Not a single dollar What is under discussion is lifting sanctions on Iran so it can do business and begin to shore up its decimated economy It is worth noting that in the past four years, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has been as active as ever, and Iran has contin ued to support militias in Lebanon, Syria, Yemen Iraq and elsewhere Sanctions have not slowed that effort, and there was no surge in such activity during the years the JCPOA was fully in place The sanctions have hit where they always do: right in the heart of the civilian population

THE ALTERNATIVE IS WAR, AND THAT, UNLIKE A RETURN TO THE JCPOA, HOLDS AT LEAST THE POSSIBILIT Y OF FORCING REGIME CHANGE IN IRAN. SUCH A WAR WOULD VERY LIKELY MAKE THE INVASION OF IRAQ LOOK LIKE A MINOR SKIRMISH, AND THE POTENTIAL EFFECTS ON THE MIDEAST AND PERSIAN GULF REGION, NOT TO MENTION THE GLOBAL ECONOMY, ARE TOO TERRIBLE TO E VEN CONTEMPLATE

The right decision here is obvious Americans need to raise their voices loudly to keep Joe Biden in unfamiliar territory for him: the path toward doing the right thing

Yet this argument also echoes ones from 2015, where it was often claimed that parts of the deal lasted as little as ten years and that it didn’t address other issues aside form Iran s nuclear program While some parts of the JCPOA do expire in just a few years oth ers are permanent An enhanced inspection regime which no other country has ever agreed to including countries like Israel whose nuclear programs are undeclared and are not monitored at all by the International Atomic energy Agency (IAeA) is a per manent feature of the JCPOA That’s partic ularly important considering that, in the wake of Trump s betrayal of the U S faith and credit, Iran shut off many monitors and generally pulled farther and farther back from the access the IAeA needs

MondoweIss M i T C h e l l P l i T N i C K

That s a deal that greatly favors the U S and the other participants (the eU, UK, France, Russia, China, and Germany) It is inconceivable that Iran would give even more while receiving even less Israel and AIPAC know this very well, as do Congres sional opponents of the deal

Indeed, JCPOA opponents have an ally in the IRGC which has always opposed the deal AIPAC’s claims that sanctions relief will include lifting sanctions related to human rights and that are leveled on terror ist groups” are ironic, considering the Trump administration, whose decisions regarding Iran they supported so passionately, made no secret of having imposed them specifically to make it harder for subsequent administra tions to return to the deal In any case, plenty of sanctions will remain on the IRGC and other Iranian groups

Additionally, Iran will be giving up its weapons grade stockpile and will again be blocked (permanently) from a plutonium path to a nuclear weapon, which means its potential breakout time to have enough fis sile material to make just one nuclear weapon will be six months, rather than the several few weeks it would take now When the deal was still in place, before May 2018, Iran’s breakout time was six months to a year That level can t be reached anymore due to the increased technical skill and knowledge Iran has gathered over the past four years, part of Iran s response to U S ab rogation of the deal
