In a city filled with fitness enthusiasts and innumerable trainers, Paperazzi spotted Fatima Zara Mallick. An extensively certified trainer with an outlook unlike any other.

Who really is Fatima Zara Mallick? What are her interests and what does she enjoy?

I am a trainer, an author, a fashion consultant and a trend forecaster. My approach to life combines various disciplines like fashion, art, fitness, dance and nutrition. I get bored easily so I constantly crave new experiences and different challenges. That carries over to my professional life... as a trainer I'm always looking for new certifications and fresh ways to make the gym interesting for my clients.

You have impressive certifications. Which fitness courses have you learned about?

Answer: I have the following fitness certifications. I am Pakistan's only crossfit level 2 coach; Pakistan's only piloxing trainer; a Certified Bootcamp Trainer from the International Bootcamp Alliance in Melbourne, Australia; a Real Barre Trainer; a Zumba Instructor; a Kettlebell and Battlerope (velocity) trainer from the Functional Training Institute, Asia.

I am a Pilates instructor; a Rehabilitation and Injury trainer and

I have completed courses in Pre and Post natal training. I am also a trained aqua aerobics and aqua zumba instructor.

Last but not the least, my background is dance. I was lucky to start my fitness journey with dance. As a child, my mom made me do katthak. Additionally, I studied belly dance in London and learnt all the Latin dances at the Florence Dance Academy in Italy.

Apart from the professional and physical advantage from these diverse courses, did these courses shape you in any way as the person you are today?

Answer: Fitness is international and I've been lucky to study it all over the world. I've done courses in Italy, Singapore, Thailand, London and the UAE. Each course made me realize that as a trainer we must hold ourselves to the highest standard because we not only represent ourselves but we stand for the bodies that certify us. My approach in life and in fitness has always been multi disciplinary which puts a lot of pressure on me. I need to be the best dance instructor while simultaneously being able to perfectly coach Olympic lifting in my crossfit classes.

You also have a qualification in Fashion Branding and merchandising, what inspired you to switch from Fashion to Fitness?

Fashion and fitness are completely interrelated. A beautiful fit body is an essential prerequisite for fashion. I did my fashion schooling from Italy and one of the things I learnt was that Italian women never stressed about weight loss: eating healthy and walking everyday is a part of their life and that is exactly why they are able to look stunning in the latest fashion. My motto combines fashion and fitness: Fashion is transient but a beautiful fit body never goes out of style.

FZM introduced Piloxing to Pakistan, what exactly is Piloxing?

Answer: Piloxing combines the body lengthening and postural benefits of Pilates with the energy of kickboxing. Piloxing therefore offers a great workout because it combines two distinctive disciplines into one full body calorie blasting workout. Each session burns up to 800 calories. The class transitions seamlessly from Pilates to kickboxing: we do both standing and mat Pilates super-setted with all the primary punches and kicks that one would find in professional MMA. Pre-Natal workouts are often discouraged in our society, how beneficial do you deem prenatal workouts?

Answer: I think that both pre and post natal workouts are absolutely essential for the health of the mother. There are so many exercises that can ease labor. The absolute worst thing to do is to stay in bed for the entirety of ones pregnancy and not do any sort of workout. That is a recipe for disaster. I've had clients who workout throughout the nine months of pregnancy and are back in the gym after a week of delivering their babies. I think a lot of the hesitancy to workout during pregnancy comes from ignorance and a lack of awareness.

Finally, be sure to work out with a certified instructor during your pregnancy. I'd like to end by asserting that pregnancy

Does fashion still play any role in your life?

I spent 7 years studying fashion and art in Italy: fashion is an integral part of who I am.. but I am not a slave to trends.

years.....I believe is style, not fashion...especially now since we have so many fashion bloggers who have no clue about the history of fashion or the cultural references made by the leading fashion houses.

For me, fashion and fitness are interlinked. 2017 is all about athleisure: a trend that brings the gym into everyday life and creates fluidity between active wear and leisure wear. It's all about transitioning effortlessly from your crossfit class to your morning coffee and to work. Now, more than ever before, working out is a style statement and the trainer you choose says a lot about who you are. I would say that the yoga going, Juicy Couture wearing clique is very different from the hardcore heavy-metal rebels at FZM Boutique Fitness.

Finally, I like to stay in touch with the fashion world through freelance consulting and trend forecasting for some of the leading fashion brands in the country. Currently, I'm working on a particularly interesting venture that combines fashion and fitness in the best way possible.

Walk us through your journey, How did FZM Fitness begin?

During my freshman year at college I gained the dreaded 15 pounds. That's when I got serious about fitness and what truly works. I had been a dancer my whole life but I felt that when it came to truly shifting shapes, just cardio was not going to cut it. That is when I got into serious weight lifting, Pilates and crossfit. What followed were a string of certifications. In the beginning, I did all the certifications because I wanted to be in the best possible shape of my life... I wanted to find out how I could defeat my Punjabi genes and get super fit and strong.

When I moved back to Pakistan, I was shocked at the lack of professionalism and proper instruction in the fitness industry.

The industry was and still is full of self taught trainers, bored housewives and kids who are high school dropouts or think that fitness is the easiest way to make a quick buck. Fitness today is like fashion a couple of years ago: everybody and the Neighbour's cat has done the Insanity DVD and therefore become a trainer. Abroad, they would be arrested. I still don't understand how people can entrust their health in the hand of a trainer who is not qualified for the job! I know I'm being mean but I'm disgusted by the state of affairs. I have 27 fitness certifications and I still feel like what I know is only the tip of the iceberg. That's exactly why I entered the fitness industry. I'm here to set standards, increase awareness and change how things are done.

What do you think encouraged you to build FZM boutique Fitness.

I think I've already answered that in the previous question.

Initially, I was just training friends and family. However, it was just a matter of time before my first bootcamp at structure and now at the Sind Club. I didn't really build FZM Boutique Fitness... I just started doing something I loved and the brand built itself.

For someone as dedicated and motivated as you, we are sure this is just the beginning.

Where do you see FZM Boutique Fitness in the next five years?

I guess you'll find out in the next five years.

In your profession you must be exposed to all sorts of fitness myths. What are some of the craziest ones you've heard to date?

I hear crazy stuff everyday... but these are definitely my top three: A) If I squat, will my butt become big like Kim Kardashian?

(Definitely not. Squats actually lift your booty, burn fat and make your legs strong).

B) Lifting weights makes women infertile. (Quite the contrary, weights and exercise promote hormonal stability and increase fertility).

C) Detoxing and juicing (Detoxing is a myth because your kidney and your liver are your natural cleansing organs... detoxing makes you lose water weight and slows down your metabolism. Hence, when you start eating, you often gain double the weight back).

A typical Pakistanis lifestyle is exceedingly unhealthy. Which three things would you want to eradicate from such a lifestyle?

Honestly, it's not that difficult to be healthy. I like to focus more on what people can do as opposed to what they should not do. Affirmations are so much more powerful than denials. So I would say drink more water because most people confuse dehydration for hunger. Secondly, switch all your white carbs to brown and eat dinner at least six to seven hours before your bedtime.

Lastly, what words of health and fitness wisdom would you like to impart on our readers?

Fitness is not something you do for 30 days or 10 days.

If you're serious about getting your act together then you need to make a lifestyle change. Small steps are key, so be realistic when you set goals. Promise yourself that you'll hit the gym at least three times a week, as opposed to running 10 km everyday, because that ain't happening!

mo hs in s haik h Tell us a little about yourself?

I was born in Taxila. Most of my life I have moved from one city to another because of my father’s designation and then finally graduated from National College of Arts in Lahore.

How did you get involved with art?

I majored in painting but love other fields of art as well, such as sculpture. To be honest I have been in love with painting and drawing since the first memory that inspired me when I was 4. I was given an assignment of drawing an apple on a chart paper, my mom made that apple for me with colour pencils and somehow that became very memorable and inspiring to me till this day.

Where do you derive your inspiration from?

During the days of college learning I used to be highly inspired from Leonardo Da Vinci, Vincent Van Gogh, Raphael and even my own teachers, but I don’t have one inspiration. Even my own life, my experiences, even a small rat or a pigeon taking off for a flight have inspired me to draw and paint. During my college days I was really inspired by my seminar class taught by Quddus Mirza, it was a very well debated class where all the students would speak up their ideas and thoughts about art and more.

IN THE SPOT LIGHT What mediums do you work in and why?

I have always experimented different mediums. I’ve worked in water colours, oil paints, clay, marble, charcoal, pencil colours, crayons, even a shoe polish. My favourite mediums are oil paints and charcoal. I Love them because I believe somehow with them I can reflect my expression well.

What are you working on now, and what are your plans for the future?

Currently I’m working on my upcoming solo exhibition.

Although I have been doing a thorough research on my concepts and discovering more techniques with how I can find a sincere and exceptional way to reflect my expression. I have already thought of some new executions of the concept “Nothing is true and everything is permitted”

Tell us about your series “nothing is true, everything is permitted” This concept derived from something I encountered during some of my hard days of my learning and a time that I shall be grateful to, forever. Some places I have been, some sorrows I have seen, but I won’t regret nor will I forget all who took that road with me. Nothing is true, depicting the very usual behaviour of mankind. We believe what we see and despise what we don't understand. It has always been about choice; what we all chose to believe and understand. I think that everything has an expression, even the animals who have been massacred in the name of God, birds we hunt and think they are expressionless, creatures we don't understand and never will unless we intend to. Criticizing is easy and understanding is rare. As I've observed that nothing is true in this world because everything is already true to our most betraying eyes, truth is common but logic is rare. I felt that I can deceive people in a most obvious way. Chalkboards has been one of my most important executions because I believe that all this life is a huge chalkboard where we all express ourselves in a way that can be overwritten and erased easily. One has to be an architect of their own life than to be tamed by people who will always love to see their message being conveyed further more. During my research for this work of art, I came across a lot of pompous speeches from the very well learned persona but with their beliefs I experienced that they have their own truth but not an absolute opinion, one way or the other we all love to see ourselves being accepted and abhor what we can't understand. This all has been depicted in my paintings.

until my work is being executed. Following my heart, exploring the truth when there is not any except for the true feeling of my heart which I believe is the ultimate truth. When I see everyone speaking the truth, not a single person telling a lie then indeed there is no lie and when there is no lie, all is a lie!

What is your average day like?

Usually I write my journal, paint or experiment some new things. Often I take out my camera and do some photography.

I love to watch wrestling, in fact I hate missing it. On some days I like to play badminton as well.

What is your favourite experience as an artist?

The fact that I can whole heartedly express whatever I need to on my work because I don’t have to please anyone as an artist but myself. I feel like I’m not answerable to any higher in command, it’s me alone with my work and my feelings. There is no limit to your imagination, I do break lines and rules.

Where is the relationship between the artist and his art?

Pure honesty, dedication and self-satisfaction with the work.

I don’t feel contend with the work being displayed when I am not satisfied with it. As I have observed and firmly believe that the best part is the honest expression between the artist and the artwork.

How much drawing do you have to go through to prepare for a painting?

Mostly I improvise directly on the canvas, that way I can be more sincere with my expressions and because too much drawn material seems more like a design to me, although with some anatomy I do practice some drawing before executing the final stroke on canvas.

Please tell us about your training in painting at the National College of fine arts, and how you transitioned to you being a game designer?

I literally learned a lot from National College of Arts. YES! I do give credit to the whole “platform” I learnt how to bring out my skills along with my concepts. I learnt from different people around the country with different customs and traditions. Crazy became so true to me that normal feels dreary now.

What's the first artwork you ever sold?

There was a very small panting long time ago, sold to some designer whose name I don’t remember, for 5,000 rupees.

Who's your favourite living artist?

Again, I won’t say one name because my learning isn’t bound to one. I would love to mention the name of my very good friend Ali Saad, I really love his work and whenever I see him working I feel really motivated and inspired. Artworks are more favorite to me than the artist.
