SALE MANAGEMENT BY:

Aegerter Marketing Services, Inc. Jeff Aegerter (402) 641-4696 jeff.aegerter@gmail.com

Welcome

April 5th, the seventh edition of The Bull Sale will take place in The Valley. We’d like to welcome you to join us at the event, evaluate the cattle in person and enjoy the weekend with us in the heart of Ohio.

Raising livestock is a labor of love. For us, that love is rooted in a deep passion for the Shorthorn breed, the farming way of life, and, most importantly, helping fellow producers achieve their goals. Over the past six years, we’ve proudly sold 425 bulls to 36 states and Canada. Seeing the impact of our genetics—both in commercial programs and within your herds—has been nothing short of a dream come true.

Each year, we remain committed to producing bulls that add value to your operation. Our focus is on calving ease, growth, and carcass merit, all while maintaining the maternal strength and phenotype that make our cowherds so productive. We expect our bulls to sire replacement females that any cattleman would be proud to own.

To assist with your selections, we have collected a full set of data on each bull, from birth weight to carcass scans. Every bull is 100K genomically tested, parent-verified, and free of known genetic conditions. Additionally, all bulls sell with a first-year breeding guarantee and free delivery anywhere in the continental U.S. and to Canadian ports of entry.

If there’s anything we can do to assist you, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We look forward to seeing you at the sale!

Sincerely,

Paint Valley Farms

OVERVIEW OF EPDS

Calving Ease Direct (CED): The CED is listed as a percentage of unassisted born out of heifers. A higher CED EPD predicts a sire that will have a higher percentage of unassisted calves.

Birth Weight (BW): Compares the differences in the weight of calves at birth. It is measured in pounds, and cattle with higher BW are predicted to produce heavier calves.

Weaning Weight (WW): The WW is expressed in pounds and predicts differences in weaning weight of a sire’s calves at weaning. Bulls with higher WW predict heavier calves across the scale at weaning.

Yearling Weight (YW): Just like WW, only at the next stage of life. The YW is expressed in pounds. Higher YW are likely to produce bigger, heavier yearlings.

Milk (MK): The hardest trait to measure, since we don’t measure milk production in beef cows. The MK is measured in pounds of calf weaning weight due to his mother’s milking ability. A higher MK predicts that a bull will sire daughters who raise heavier calves due to their milk production.

Total Maternal (TM): Total Maternal EPD is a simple formula. TM= MK EPD + ½ WW EPD. It measures impact on calf weaning weight due to both milk production and the cow’s genetics for growth. Bulls with a higher TM EPD should sire daughters with a bigger impact on their calves’ weaning weight.

Calving Ease Maternal (CEM): Measures the ability of a bull’s daughters to calves unassisted as two year olds. The higher the CEM, the easier calving should be when a bull’s daughters have that first calf.

Stayability (ST): Cows who work longer make more money. The ST predicts the ability of a bull to sire cows that “stay around”. The ST is shown as a percentage of how much more likely a bull’s daughters will stay in your herd to the age of 6. A higher ST bull is more likely to have daughters stay around for a long time.

Carcass Weight (CW): The CW is all about pounds of beef on the rail. Higher CW means that a bull is more likely to sire feeders with heavier carcass weights.

Yield Grade (YG): The USDA Yield Grade scoring system

is the unit of measurement for the YG. Yield Grade 1 are leaner, more retail product carcasses. Lower, more negative YG bulls are expected to sire calves that score better on the USDA Yield Grade scale.

Ribeye Area (REA): REA is measures the size of the muscle that gives us the ribeye in square inches. A higher REA indicates a bull is expected to produce larger a ribeye in their offspring.

Marbling (MB): The MB is in units of percentage of intramuscular fat within the ribeye. Higher MB bulls should sire higher marbling (and grading) feeder calves.

Fat Thickness (FT): Inches of back fat (in hundredths of an inch) is the unit of measurement for FT. More negative FT are indicative of a bull that should sire less back fat in his calves.

INEXES

Calving Ease Index ($CEZ): An index focused on identifying genetics that facilitate smoother calving when breeding first calf heifers. As the name suggests, the Calving Ease Index emphasizes calving ease, with a component built in to maintain mature cow size at acceptable levels.

Balanced Merit Index ($BMI): BMI includes a component of maternal traits, but also calving ease, growth, and carcass characteristics. This index is designed with replacement heifers being retained from within the herd, while the steers from the calf crop are marketing on a quality-based carcass grid.

Cow Productivity Index ($CPI): The Cow Productivity Index is the newest offering in the ASA genetic lineup as a tool focused on identifying the cattle that do the things we expect of a productive momma cow: calve unassisted, raise strong calves to weaning, keep mature size in check, and stay in the productive herd for years to come.

Feedlot Index ($F): For the cattleman who sees value in retaining ownership of feeder cattle. Growth, performance and carcass quality drive $Feedlot. Cattle bred to grow and grade excel in $Feedlot.
