And I’m Goldie Fox. We’re here for the most FUR-nomenal competition in all Alaska: Fat Bear Week!
For months, these bears have chomped as much chow as PAW-sible to prepare for hibernation. Now they’re ready for the fall face-off.
In each round, two bears will hit the scales to see which one’s buns have the most tons.
But only one will be crowned the biggest bear in Katmai National Park and Preserve!
I’m so excited, I can BEAR-ly contain myself. Here come our first contestants. Let’s get ready to
GRUMMMMBLE!!
Our first bear is the apple of everyone’s pie. She always takes the cake. It’s . . . Straw Beary!
Nice to meat you!
Don’t let that sweet face fool you. This bear has been crammin’ salmon all summer, and she’s got the padding to prove it.
On the other scale, put your paws together for . . .
Granny Grizz! This grumpy grazer might not have many teeth, but she’s no gummy bear.
Speak up, sonny, or I’ll give you the chair . . . the rocking chair!
Let’s see which of these brawny bruins tips the scales.
Watch out, Granny, I’ve got some real fruit paunch!
I’m going to rock this competition!
Granny Grizz moves to the final round!
Our next battle bear is chunky and hunky. It’s . . . Bruiser Bruin!
I’m here to plump me up!
That’s one mean salmoneating machine.
No trout about it, Goldie. Bruiser’s won Fat Bear Week three years in a row. Will this year be another walk in the national park, or will Bruiser finally meet his match?
Only one weigh to find out! Our next contestant puts the waddle in swaddle. He’s a true tater tot. It’s . . .
. . .
Baby Bear!
Where
is he?
Remember, Moose—these bears have been guzzling everything that swims to fatten up for winter . . . pink salmon, silver salmon, red salmon, dead salmon.
I’m getting green in the gills just thinking about it. But if Baby Bear doesn’t pull up soon, Bruiser will get his chance at another win.
Um, Goldie? How can a baby stand a chance against Bruiser Bruin?
Poor Baby doesn’t want to face my fury. Or maybe he’s at a meeting with the Cub Scouts.
This contest is about to go from awesome . . . to CLAW-some!
Time’s up and no sign of Baby Bear. Bruiser moves to the final round!
Our next bear eats and lives to smell about it. He’s not dinky, but he sure is stinky. It’s Hank the Tank!
Can you smell what the Hank is cooking?
Unfortunately, we can. Let’s meet your challenger. She’s GORGE-ous, she’s everyone’s favorite creature teacher . . .
