Princess Alice Hospice Book of Dedications 2023

Welcome

Reverend Dr Steve Nolan

As the days draw closer to mid-winter, the dimming of the sun’s light comes ever earlier, and the nights can feel too long.At this time of year, light becomes increasingly important for us, not only to see what we are doing but for our sense of wellbeing. Lighting even a small candle not only lifts the darkness, but it can also lift our mood.

Our annual Light up a Life event is both a service to remember and an invitation to celebrate the life of a person or persons who have been significant to us.

We don’t need an invitation to remember that person; they have been so much a part of us, how can we forget them? And each time they come to our mind, it can feel like a small light going on in our soul. But pausing to remember with others, as we are doing this evening, can add special significance to our own remembering – adding our own small light to the lights of many others may make our light seem to shine that much brighter.

Remembering with others, in this way, may help our mood and help us also to celebrate the life of the person or persons who have meant so much to us. In remembering, we may feel some sadness, but we will likely also feel pride and gratitude; a bittersweet mix of what we have lost and what they have given us.

I trust this year’s Light up a Life service, with its mix of readings and traditional Christmas music, gives you that opportunity to remember and celebrate the significant person or persons in your life.

Thanks to:

Every one of our supporters who enable us to continue providing compassionate care 24/7, 365 days of the year, including those who have volunteered their time, supported our shops, remembered us in their Will, fundraised for us or have kindly donated.

Making memories live on

Many people who join our Light up a Life service choose to celebrate the life of those who are no longer with us but will always be in our thoughts throughout the year in a variety of ways.

Sponsoring a feather with the name of your loved one on our Giving Dove

Traditionally seen as the symbol of peace of the deepest kind, our Giving Dove is made up of hundreds of feathers, dedicated to those whose lives we wish to remember.

By sponsoring a feather, you not only create a lasting memory of someone special, but you also help to support the many patients and families who rely on the compassionate care we provide.

Crafted by a local artist, Oliver Russell, our beautiful Giving Dove is located in our reception area here in Esher.
