Dear Friends, Alta’s 2020 story ended on a high note with the completion of 67 households at Fair Oaks Commons, our first project in San Mateo County. It was a joy to welcome residents to their new homes in time for the holidays. Our housing pipeline is full of exciting projects that will provide housing and supportive services to help individuals and families continue “building stories that matter.”

With the ongoing housing crisis, the increase in racial violence, and COVID, the importance of building and operating safe and inclusive housing has never been greater. I specifically wish to acknowledge Alta’s local heroes-our property and resident services teams--who rose to the challenge, quickly created new ways to support our residents in the face of the pandemic, and did so with grace, humility, and aplomb. I’m so incredibly proud of their dedication this past year to help our residents navigate the many challenges of the pandemic. My thanks also to the Alta staff, our Board and our many Community Partners for their dedication and indispensable support to help create stronger, more diverse communities.

I am looking forward to working with all of you on the next chapter of Alta Housing’s story!

RESIDENT STORIES Chanel E. always dreamed of becoming a nurse, even when she graduated high school seven months pregnant with her first child. Though a college education seemed out of reach, Chanel made a promise to herself, saying that “I would do whatever it took to earn a college degree so that I could be a positive role model to my children.”

A longtime resident and member of the Alta Housing community, Chanel is keeping her promise. While parenting two girls and working as a medical transporter for Stanford Hospital, Chanel was determined to take classes at De Anza College. She explains that, “living in the Alta Housing community has given me the stepping stone to becoming an independent mother.”

Chanel’s hard work is paying off. In 2020, she started De Anza’s nursing school. With the help of Alta Housing’s Opportunity Fund, Chanel plans on becoming a registered nurse in emergency medicine.

“I love a high energy, fast-paced working environment,” says Chanel. “It has always been in my nature to be a nurturer and healer.”

Alta Housing’s Opportunity fund helps members of the Alta Housing community turn their educational dreams into realities. For residents like Chanel, it is an opportunity to write the next chapter in her life.
