Hello Welcome to In Touch magazine – your insight into the latest news and updates from across PAHT. In this edition, you can read about our latest progress towards a brand new, state-of-the-art hospital for our patients, visitors and our people. We also mark the 72nd anniversary of the NHS - a chance to reflect on how far we have come over the last year, and to applaud ourselves and each other for the dedication and passion shown to providing high quality care.

We say a fond farewell and thank you to the Project Wingman team, who have now departed PAHT after providing a first-class airport lounge service to our hard-working people during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Additionally, there is an opportunity to read about the new space we are developing for you and your colleagues to relax and go to on your breaks - The Alex Lounge.

We also explore the story of our patient, Stuart Ball, who has thanked our amazing PAHT people for the care he received during his “life-changing” fight against COVID-19.

Finally, I urge you to please take the time to read the article on learning from deaths. We have made significant progress over the last year to ensure that we are delivering the highest quality, safe care for our patients at all times.

Design matters Following a great response to an invitation to get involved in the first design stage for our new hospital, many of you; along with our patients, carers and community stakeholders took part in engagement workshops.

The workshops were run as listening events and thanks go to everyone who took part for their great suggestions and ideas of the way our new hospital should look and feel; both as a place to work and a place to receive high quality care.

Although moving in and opening the doors of our new hospital to our patients is still a few years away, discussions and decisions about the design of our new hospital; the location of services and how the building is structured must take place now. This includes how the models of care will be provided and the space needed to provide high quality care and a great experience for our patients. Just as important is what needs to be considered and included for all our people – what

Light and bright: Every indoor space needs big windows, offering natural light and a view.

High, airy ceilings, not oppressive and closed in. An outward looking, uplifting environment for users and staff alike.

Calming not clinical: Avoid clutter, keep unnecessary medical equipment out of sight where you can, and move patients in separate, dedicated corridors (especially when wheeled on beds).

Bring in some vibrant, accent colours to brighten up both space and spirits (of staff, patients, volunteers and visitors).

Alongside this detail, the design brief provides the detailed technical requirements and specification of the building for the team of architects to work from to create our amazing new hospital.

As the architectural plans are created there will be more great opportunities to get involved in decisions about the finer details of the spaces.

Marking the 72nd anniversary of the NHS Sunday 5 July marked the 72nd anniversary of our NHS. As we know, this year has been the most challenging year for the NHS and you have all adapted to a lot of change in recent months, and have gone above and beyond to support our COVID-19 response.

I am extremely proud of you all, our amazing people, who have helped us to get through these challenging times, together.

You have made a real difference to the lives of so many of our patients and their loved ones, which is shown through the outpouring of support and messages of appreciation that we have received, including: “Your excellent communication, empathy and care is a credit to the hospital and NHS at this difficult time – thank you.”

60 second interview Helen Crompton, senior medical photographer When did you join PAHT and how has your experience been so far?

I joined PAHT in 1996 and I love working here, although I have been the only medical photographer all this time, which can be challenging as I had always been part of a large team in previous roles. It’s just me and Karen (graphic designer) in our team and we are part of radiology.

What is your role?

I am a senior medical photographer based at PAHT and I deal with all patient photography requests and queries and manage the systems for viewing and archiving all patient photographs.

I am also responsible for our patient photography policy and consent protocols. I have weekly pre-booked outpatient lists including ophthalmic imaging (FFA/ICGA) and general medical photography requests from all departments. I also undertake inpatient photography on a same day request.

What’s the most challenging part of your role?

The most challenging part is not having anybody to cover my role, but we have an out of hours camera that staff can use when I am not on site. I support many members of staff in different areas with their photography of patients and manage all the administration of those images and train staff where required.

A space for you to shape: The Alex Lounge We will be opening a new staff area with bright, modern space and facilities.

We have funded this project in response to your feedback about how important a new staff area is to support your health and

wellbeing. Contributions have also been made via the coronavirus (COVID-19) charity appeal, in recognition of your hard work and dedication from our local community.

The location within The Princess

Alexandra Hospital is the operations corridor, on the ground floor of the main building, between the mortuary and the operations centre.

We asked for your feedback to help shape the space for all of our people to relax and socialise.

Project Wingman departs PAHT The Project Wingman team departed PAHT on 3 July, after more than two months providing a first-class airport lounge service to our hardworking people.

To thank the volunteers from Stansted Airport for their kind contributions during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, we held a socially distanced closing party in the restaurant and the Project Wingman lounge.

This was an all-day Spanish holiday themed celebration of the fantastic Project Wingman service to support the health and wellbeing of our people over the last few months.

The event gave staff an opportunity to say thank you to our fabulous furloughed flightcrew friends who served us refreshments provided by our

catering team, and helped us to unwind between shifts seven days a week from 27 April.

With the lounge representing the aircraft, and the outside area representing a Spanish beach, there was socially distanced seating, beach towels, and plenty of refreshments to enjoy. Every member of staff was also offered a free meal with a Project Wingman boarding pass. Additionally, there was a special ‘thank you’ presentation, a free raffle with fantastic prizes to be won, and a socially distanced photo shoot with a camera drone (pictured on

the front cover).

Ogechi Emeadi, director of people, organisational development and communications, said: It was wonderful to see such support from the aircrew at Stansted Airport during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

We are so thankful to the aircrew for providing this fantastic service for our people and we were pleased to show our gratitude with a special send off.

Patient tells the story of his “lifechanging” experience with coronavirus (COVID-19)

A patient who has recently been discharged from PAHT has shared his story and words of appreciation to our people for the “fantastic treatment” he received during his nineweek fight against coronavirus (COVID-19).

a persistent cough. I was also getting very tired and listless, lying in bed and not wanting to do much. My wife was getting increasingly concerned and on 24 March, decided I needed advice.

I woke up a month later with tubes coming out everywhere, a catheter, a cannula, I had had a tracheostomy (an opening created at the front of the neck so a tube can be inserted into the windpipe (trachea) to help you breathe) and a nasogastric tube (a feeding tube passed through your nose and down into your stomach). All I could mouth was ‘thank you’, I

was just whispering to the staff and using sign language.

It was a bit surreal, I was still so convinced that the dreams I had were real. I was clearly recounting them to the nursing staff as if they had actually happened. It was all of these absurd, ridiculous stories that had never taken place.

– I hope – experience. It’s lifechanging, because of how close I came to not making it. The concept of dying when I went into hospital never entered my mind. Then came physiotherapy.

The first time I tried it was exhausting, just to lift my legs off the end of the bed. It was really hard to lift my head up too. Outpatient response, recovery and transformation In response to the national guidance issued regarding coronavirus (COVID-19), our PAHT people have worked extremely hard to provide the majority of our outpatient appointments virtually (not face to face), with telephone clinics and video clinics for our patients.

Keeping you safe at work throughout the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is one of our key priorities, and we have been giving careful thought to how we manage the risks of coronavirus (COVID-19) for everyone at PAHT.

Currently, only consultants are able to authorise urgent face to face appointments, where clinically appropriate.

We developed the individual risk assessment form to help us understand your individual needs so that we can support you and keep you safe at work.

We will continue to offer virtual appointments where possible and build on these significant advances to ensure an efficient and high quality experience for our patients.

Thank you for returning the risk assessment forms (for those with and without identified risks) to the staff health and wellbeing (SHaW) team.

However, from Monday 6 July, we began to recommence face to face appointments across all specialities that cannot be carried out virtually - a risk assessment process is in place to identify which patients are suitable.

Copies of the risk assessment forms are available on Alex and the COVID-19 staff web page.

A huge thank you to each and every one of the outpatient team, they have embraced the service and technology changes whilst carrying out 70-80% of their appointments virtually.

CQC: Learning from deaths We have made significant progress over the last year to ensure that we are delivering the highest quality, safe care for our patients at all times. We have continued to focus on improving our processes around mortality, implementing new ways of working in order to ensure that we are learning from deaths.

The chart, pictured right highlights the total number of inpatient deaths by month, versus a four year average.

It peaks in April in line with the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Our new ways of working include:

Every death is reviewed by a medical examiner (ME), an impartial senior consultant who agrees the cause of death on the certificate and identifies if there are any issues with the care and treatment of the patient.

If the ME identifies issues, the patient will be referred for a Structured Judgement Review (SJR). This is an in-depth scrutiny of the care and treatment delivered to the patient in order to identify gaps. The graph below right shows the number of cases referred for a SJR.

However, only four were deemed as avoidable and externally declared as a serious incident.

A further six cases underwent a rapid review, with local learning

taken back to teams.

In the next edition of In Touch magazine, there will be an update on the themes and findings of structured judgement reviews (SJRs), which help us to understand where our gaps in care and treatment are.

The meeting rooms have good technology and are easy to book online. The boardroom has three large screens so some staff can attend in person and others can attend virtually. There are also small huddle rooms for one person which is good when you have a meeting so as not to disturb colleagues. Each desk has a docking station to plug a laptop into, there are also individual lockers for those that do not wish to take their laptop home.

The flexibility to be able to pick up a laptop and work from home or a different site has helped with the work life balance. Agile working works really well.

To anyone who is due to move to Kao Park, I would say come over as soon as you can.

It is a massive improvement to working conditions and is setting an example of the way PAHT will progress in the future. I am really glad I moved off site and am

very happy to be able to work in a very different more professional environment.

Due to COVID-19, some teams have a rota to work from home and come into the office.

There is enough desk space here to maintain the two metre social distancing. There are disinfectant wipes on desks which are used to clean the desk before you use it and after you have finished. There is antiseptic gel at each entrance and adequate soap at sinks and washrooms.

Kao Park is on London Road in Harlow. It is 2.8 miles from the PAHT main site with local cycle routes, public transport and road links between the sites. There is rail and road access to London (28 miles north of central London), Cambridge (38 miles south of Cambridge) and Stansted Airport (12 miles).

Cycling Kao Park is well positioned for staff and visitors to make use of Harlow’s cycling network. There are cycle racks at the facility as well as modern changing facilities or shower rooms for cyclists to use.

By bus The local bus routes to Kao Park include bus routes 10, 420, 509 and 510; all have bus stops within walking distance to Kao Park. The nearest bus stop is the London Road Campus bus stop – a oneminute walk to Kao Park.

By train The nearest train station to Kao Park is Harlow Mill railway station on the West Anglia Main Line, serving the eastern part of Harlow.

There are local bus routes available for commuting to and from the train station.

By car The local road network to Kao Park is via the A414, the A1025 or the A1169. The nearest motorway access is via the M25 and the M11.

What are the car parking arrangements at Kao Park?

Car parking is available for salaried staff at Kao Park, at the same tariff as the other PAHT sites. Arrangements for the allocation of parking permits are also the same - colleagues who live within one mile of Kao Park are eligible to apply. Those who wish to apply for a car parking permit at Kao Park will need to

complete and return a form to ritchie.parrott@nhs.net.

Car parking permits will allow staff to park at both Kao Park and Linkway if dual site working is required. Motorcycle bays are available at Kao Park and are free of charge.

Minimal visitor parking is available at Kao Park. However, we would recommend using public transport where possible or parking in the nearby Tesco car park.

Claiming travel expenses Staff (with a car parking permit) who wish to drive to the PAHT main site will be able to park at the Linkway car park at no extra cost, as their car parking permit is valid at both sites. However, use of a personal vehicle for inter-site travel must be approved by the appropriate line manager to enable staff to claim mileage expenses.

Staff purchasing a bus ticket as a result of the 2.8 mile relocation costs to Kao Park from the PAHT main site or for essential only inter-site travel must have this approved by the appropriate line manager to enable staff to claim mileage expenses.

How do I access the building?

We occupy the first floor of Kao Park. The building has the same security system as at the hospital.

Staff who hold an existing security card can have this updated to allow access to Kao Park, with approval from their line manager.

All staff will receive a new photo ID card, and the security team

will be in contact to ensure your correct job title is listed and to ask if you would like to update your current photo.

There are two main receptions at Kao Park Reception 1 (the first reception you come to) is open from 5am9pm, Monday to Friday Reception 2 (the next reception) is open from 5am-5pm, Monday to Friday Outside of these hours, fobs will be made available to gain access to the office via the reception lobbies through the side door, adjacent to the revolving doors Visitors to Kao Park sign in at the main reception before going up to the PAHT reception on the first floor. What catering options are available at Kao Park?

Kao Park has access to a fantastic space, with plenty of comfortable chairs and tables and large windows with sunlight pouring in. There are modern kitchens at both ends of the floor, each equipped with two large fridges, microwaves, filtered cold water, along with free tea and coffee.

Dorrington’s local bakery van is onsite from Monday to Friday at 9.30am, offering an array of locally prepared food including sandwiches, baps, baguettes, cakes, pastries, doughnuts, hot sausage rolls and pasties.

There are also vending machines, stocked with snacks and cold drinks.

What does agile working mean?

Agile working is the term used to describe how employees can work flexibly from any location; this could include PAHT, or other NHS locations, offices of partners or stakeholders, at home on occasion, or in any combination of these. #PAHTPeople ICU wall art demonstrates equipment for patients Our intensive care unit (ICU) team have recently unveiled a fantastic piece of wall art that illustrates the complex equipment used in ICU. The large scale poster, pictured below, is displayed in the ICU corridor for patients and visitors to see and clearly explains each piece of equipment and why it is used; this is extremely useful for patients and their loved ones so that they understand how they were cared for and treated whilst staying on the unit and to aid the recovery process.
