MATERIAL INSIGHTS

In this section, you’ll find essential information about the technical properties and certifications of our textiles. From flame retardancy and acoustic performance to lightfastness and durability, these insights offer a deeper understanding of the materials’ quality and suitability for demanding public environments.

OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100

TESTED FOR HARMFUL SUBSTANCES

Many of Pagunette’s fabrics are certified according to OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 – one of the world’s most widely recognised labels for textiles tested for harmful substances.

A fabric certified under OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 has undergone independent laboratory testing and meets strict human-ecological requirements. This includes limits on substances that are regulated by law, as well as many chemicals that are not yet legally restricted but are known to raise health or environmental concerns.

Textiles with this certification offer reassurance that they do not contain hazardous concentrations of substances such as formaldehyde, heavy metals, pesticides, or prohibited PFAS compounds – making them a safe and responsible choice for indoor environments.

KEY FEATURES OF OEKO -TEX® STANDARD 100:

• Tested for over 100 substances

• Strict limits for human & environmental safety

• Globally recognised certification

• Meets EU REACH requirements

• Includes limit values for legally banned PFAS

• Updated annually to reflect the latest knowledge

• Adjusted to comply with new legal requirements

FLAME RETARDANT CURTAIN FABRICS

SAFETY YOU CAN DOCUMENT – DESIGN YOU CAN TRUST

In public and commercial interiors, safety is never optional. Flame retardant curtain fabrics are widely used in sectors with strict fire regulations – such as healthcare, hospitality, education and transportation. Curtains and textiles in these spaces must help reduce the spread of fire and smoke in the event of ignition – a crucial factor when many people are present. At Pagunette, we offer a wide selection of flame retardant fabrics that meet international fire safety certifications without compromising on aesthetics or versatility.

INHERENT FR VS. COATED FR – WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

There are two main types of flame retardant textiles:

• Inherent FR fabrics – flame retardant at the fibre level

• Coated FR fabrics – treated with a flame retardant finish on the surface

The right solution depends on your project’s needs.

Inherent FR fabrics are woven from fibres that are intrinsically flame retardant. This protection is built into the molecular structure of the fibre and does not wash out over time. These fabrics are ideal for high-use environments where regular washing and wear are part of daily life – such as hospitals or other demanding public settings.

Coated FR fabrics, on the other hand, are treated with a flame-retardant finish after weaving. While they may be more cost-effective in the short term, their flame retardant properties can diminish with repeated washing or heavy wear –making them best suited to lower-maintenance spaces such as offices or private residences.

FR CERTIFICATIONS

IMO/MED: THE HIGHEST STANDARD FOR FIRE -RETARDANT FABRICS

IMO/MED is the strictest internationally recognised flame-retardant standard and is required for use in the maritime sector. Issued by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) – the UN agency promoting safe, secure, environmentally sound and sustainable shipping – this certification ensures that textiles meet the highest fire-safety requirements at sea. To qualify, fabrics must pass accredited IMO/MED fire tests, including IMO FTPC Part 7 (textiles) and Part 8 (upholstered furniture).

M1 / B1 - TOP EUROPEAN CERTIFICATIONS

M1 (France) and B1 (Germany) are key European flame-retardant standards widely required for contract curtains in hotels, hospitals, schools and care facilities. These standards help ensure that fabrics can be used safely in public and commercial environments. In both tests, the fabric is exposed to a controlled flame. To pass, it must not burn for more than five seconds, must maintain its dimensions, and must not produce molten droplets.

As a general rule, fabrics that meet the stricter French M1 requirements will usually also pass the German B1 test –although this should always be confirmed.

M1 = French NFP92 503-505 M1. B1 = German DIN 4102 B1

EN 13773 - EUROPEAN STANDARD “TEXTILE BURNING BEHAVIOUR FOR CURTAINS”

The test fabric is placed in a vertical metal frame. A propane gas flame is applied to the test sample. The test is performed according to the predefined scheme. Depending on the results, the fabrics are certified from class 1 to 5.

BS 5867 = BRITISH CERTIFICATE “FABRICS FOR CURTAINS AND DRAPES.”

A test specimen is oriented vertically on a specimen holder. A small flame is applied to the face of the specimen.

NFPA 701 = AMERICAN CERTIFICATE “FABRICS FOR CURTAINS AND DRAPES.”

NFPA 701 tests how a fabric reacts to flame exposure. A sample is hung vertically and ignited, and the after-flame time, burning of any fallen material, and weight loss are measured. To pass, the fabric must stay within strict limits for both burn time and weight loss.

CAL117, NFPA260, EN1021, BS5258, BS7176 - “CIGARETTE TESTS”

The test fabric is put on a chair simulation and is exposed to a burning cigarette. For example: a lit cigarette is placed in the angle of the test rig, and left to smoulder until it’s completely burnt out. After 60 minutes, no smouldering or flaming of the fabric should be observed.

ACOUSTICS

LOWER THE NOISE

In many workplaces and publicly available spaces, the noise levels are typically unnecessarily high. It has been scientifically proven that permanent background noise affect our performance levels negatively and lower the general sense of wellbeing. Noise reducing curtains from Pagunette have a positive impact on both the visual expression of the room, and the acoustics. The careful and specific construction of the fabrics, reduces sound intensity and prevents noise development in the space. By lowering noise pollution, you reduce the stress of visitors, employees and inhabitants alike.

TESTED AND CERTIFIED

Our acoustic curtains are tested and certified according to the ISO 354 standard, but even those of our curtains that have not been certified as acoustic curtains, contribute to a more comfortable soundscape at your work place. The reason for this, is that the sound waves, that would otherwise be reflected back and forth between the bare walls and hard and smooth surfaces of the windows, are absorbed and interrupted by the soft, wavy and textured surface of the curtain fabric.

BEAUTIFUL AND FLEXIBLE ROOMDIVIDERS

The modern workplace is ever changing, and teams are not set in stone like they used to be. Everything is project-oriented, so your workplace should be as well. That is one of the reasons why open office spaces have

become so popular. Use curtains as sculptural and informal room dividers, to create temporary, projectoriented work-spaces, that can easily be drawn back when the project is finished, and another project with a different constellation of skills begins.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE SOUND WAVES

When you are working to improve the acoustics of the workspace, it is important to know which frequencies that pose a problem. If it is the high-level frequencies you have to focus on the ceilings, if it is the low frequencies you have to focus on the flooring, and if it is the frequencies in the middle, that encompass, among other things, voices and the general noises found in an office environment, you have to focus on interrupting the waves bouncing off the walls. This can be done by using curtains. The certified acoustic curtains do this the best, but even normal curtains absorb sound waves better than bare walls and massive window sections. MARTINDALE

DURABILITY IN UPHOLSTERY FABRICS

Many of our fabrics are suitable not only for curtains and room dividers, but also for upholstery. Their durability is tested using the Martindale method, an internationally recognised standard for measuring abrasion resistance. The Martindale value shows how many rubs a fabric can withstand before wearing. Higher numbers indicate greater durability.

RECOMMENDED MARTINDALE VALUES

• 15,000–25,000 rubs – Private homes

• 25,000–40,000 rubs – General contract environments

• 60,000 + rubs – High-traffic environments

Our upholstery qualities meet these requirements, ensuring long-lasting performance and appearance even under demanding conditions. Choosing fabrics with documented durability ensures solutions that stand up to daily use - both in residential and professional settings.

DIMOUT AND BLACKOUT CURTAINS

FROM SOFT LIGHT TO TOTAL DARKNESS

In public and professional spaces, controlling natural light is essential for both comfort and functionality. Different situations call for different levels of light control — and this is where dimout and blackout curtains each play a distinct role. Although they may appear similar at first glance, the two types perform very differently in terms of how much light they block and how they influence the atmosphere of a room.

DIMOUT – NOT FULL DARKNESS (90-99% LIGHT REDUCTION )

Dimout curtains are designed to significantly reduce incoming daylight while still allowing a soft glow to pass through. They create a subdued, comfortable light level, which helps reduce glare without darkening the room completely. This makes them ideal for classrooms, offices and meeting rooms, where a balance between daylight and visual comfort is required.

BLACKOUT – COMPLETE DARKNESS (100% LIGHT EXCLUSION)

Blackout curtains, on the other hand, use a dense weave or a special coating to block 100% of incoming light, creating total darkness. They are essential in spaces where full light exclusion is needed — such as auditoriums, conference rooms, care facilities and especially hotel rooms, where deep, undisturbed sleep is a priority. Studies show that people sleep better in complete darkness, making blackout curtains a key factor in comfort and guest satisfaction.

RECYCLED POLYESTER

RECYCLED VS. CONVENTIONAL POLYESTER - LOWER RESOURCE USE

Conventional polyester is made from fossil-based raw materials such as petroleum or natural gas, and its production requires significant amounts of energy and water — especially during extraction and polymerisation. Recycled polyester (rPET) is produced from pre- or post-consumer waste, such as plastic bottles or textile scraps. Compared to virgin polyester, it uses fewer new resources and helps reduce environmental pressure by offering:

• Lower energy demand – studies show savings of 30–50% depending on the process

• Reduced water use – no fossil extraction or refining required

• Less reliance on raw oil – uses existing plastic instead of new petroleum

• Support for circular material flows – extends the life of plastic already in circulation

Recycled polyester is not biodegradable, so its environmental value depends on traceability and responsible processing. Certifications such as GRS (Global Recycled Standard) help ensure this.

Used plastic bottles ready for recycling.
The plastic is shredded into small pieces.
The plastic is melted and formed into flakes.
The flakes are transformed into 100% recycled yarn.

GLOBAL RECYCLED STANDARD

SUSTAINABLE INTERIORS WITH VERIFIED RESPONSIBILITY

The Global Recycled Standard is an internationally recognised certification that documents the use of recycled materials and ensures responsible production across the entire supply chain. Many Pagunette textiles are GRS certified.

WHAT GRS GUARANTEES

• Verified recycled content – the amount and type of recycled fibre is clearly documented

• Traceability – from raw material to finished textile

• Controlled chemical processes – GRS-certified producers must follow strict procedures for chemical use

• Environmental management – requirements for wastewater treatment and responsible disposal of chemical waste

• Social responsibility – certified facilities are audited for fair and safe working conditions

TRANSPARENCY AND TRACEABILITY

GRS certification does not guarantee a lower total environmental footprint, but it confirms that recycled materials are used and processed under recognised environmental and social standards. This makes GRS-certified textiles a valuable choice in projects where documentation, transparency and traceability are essential.

FASTNESS TO LIGHT

PROTECTING COLOUR OVER TIME

All curtain fabrics are exposed to natural and artificial light, and this can cause fading over time. Lightfastness describes how well a textile maintains its colour when exposed to light -an important factor in commercial spaces with large windows or strong daylight.

Lightfastness is measured according to ISO 105-B02, using a scale from 1 to 8, where 8 is the highest resistance. For professional and high-traffic environments, we recommend a rating of 5 or above.

To prolong the fabric’s appearance, we recommend using lined curtains or adjusting the folds regularly to distribute light exposure more evenly.

Most Pagunette fabrics are tested for lightfastness, and the results can be found on our website or technical datasheets.

SEVERAL FACTORS AFFECT LIGHTFASTNESS:

Fibre type – natural fibres like cotton, linen and wool fade more easily than polyester

Dyeing method – some eco-friendly dye processes use fewer chemicals, which can reduce stability

Colour choice – bright reds, yellows and purples are especially sensitive to UV light

Sun exposure – Direct sunlight accelerates fading

HYGIENIC WASHING

– RELIABILITY WOVEN INTO EVERY THREAD

In healthcare environments and other public spaces with strict hygiene requirements, it’s essential that textiles withstand repeated high-temperature washing – without compromising on performance, appearance, or durability.

At Pagunette, we offer curtain fabrics that meet these requirements. Several of our qualities are tested according to the American hospital standard AATCC 96, which simulates industrial laundering conditions and assesses dimensional stability after repeated washing and drying. In addition, we offer fabrics that are tested in accordance with ISO 6330 and ISO 5077, ensuring they can be washed at 60 °C or up to 72 °C, depending on the specific fabric and application.

THESE CURTAINS ARE IDEALLY SUITED FOR:

• Hospitals and clinics

• Care homes and public institutions

• Large-scale kitchens and canteens

• Any environment with elevated hygiene protocols

When you choose hygienically washable curtains from Pagunette, you’re choosing products that combine technical reliability, design versatility, and long-lasting performance – even in the most demanding environments.

WASHING TEMPERATURES EXPLAINED

Some of our curtain fabrics are marked with multiple temperature guidelines, such as 30 °C, 60 °C, and 74 °C. The lowest temperature is the recommended regular wash, designed to preserve the fabric’s quality and appearance over time. However, if thermal disinfection is required – for example in healthcare settings – the fabric can be washed at higher temperatures such as 70–74 °C, depending on the specific textile and test results (e.g. ISO 6330 or AATCC 96).

THERMOCHEMICAL DISINFECTION – A RELIABLE ALTERNATIVE TO HIGH -TEMPERATURE WASHING

For curtain fabrics that are not designed to tolerate washing above 60 °C, thermochemical disinfection offers an effective and validated alternative. This method combines washing at moderately high temperatures (typically 60 °C) with approved disinfectants to achieve the required microbiological cleanliness.

This process is particularly important in healthcare settings, where eliminating bacteria such as Clostridioides difficile (C. difficile) is critical for preventing infection and ensuring a safe environment.

Several Pagunette fabrics are washable at 60 °C with durability verified through ISO 6330 testing. This makes them suitable for use in validated thermochemical disinfection processes, where elevated temperatures and approved disinfectants are used – a reliable alternative when washing at 70–74 °C is not suitable for the fabric.

CURTAINS SUITABLE FOR HYGIENIC WASHING

Here you’ll find a selection of curtain designs that can withstand washing at elevated temperatures – ideal for environments with strict hygiene requirements.

Please note: repeated washing at high temperatures may affect certain properties, including dimensional stability (warp and weft), colour fastness, and surface texture.
