EDITOR’S LETTER 4

I am super excited about our first Men’s’ issue. As much as I thought I knew about Men I have come to realize that my knowledge is limited! I admire those handsome beards that I see on all the classically styled men, but don’t know a thing about what it takes to maintain it. So with a bit of guidance from the men in our collective lives we were able to gain some insight on some of the things that interest men. We had a great time with Cover Guy Donell Jones; his peaceful aura and sexyquietness kept the all ladies mesmerized during the shoot! We had an opportunity to speak with Mr. Jones amidst his hectic concert schedule and he left us with no no doubts as to why his music remains forever in our hearts. Actor Blue Kimble has a great personality to go along with those smoldering good looks. Blue tells us a few things about his life and his role in the much anticipated dramatic series Media, which kicks off on TV One this summer debuted a full length pilot this February so don’t forget to check it out on demand. While Product Junkie is on vacation one of our readers Blaqryder shares his grooming tale of woe...it’s hilarious! Sorry Blaqyryder lol. The man cave is a great escape for men right in their own houses. So let’s pick out some great stuff to add to their hideaways. Maybe we will get an invitation to hangout for a while! We have a plethora of grooming products that men love and that we love for them along with awesome fashion ideas and trends. Michael Wray, one of our go to hair experts, gives men instructions on how to cultivate the best beard ever! Author Cesar Mason tells us what he thinks we want and our own Kelli J. tells men what we really want. Maybe we can meet in the middle? Find out on pages....... Special thanks to Creative Director Nathan Pearcy for keeping me on track and to Farrah Gilyard of Atlanta Lifestyles Entertainment firm, for all that you do! Thanks to our awesome team that comes together to make all this goodness happen. So without further blah, blah, from me, turn the PAGE and enjoy!

Confessions of a Product Junkie Product Junkie is taking a seat for the Men’s issue so Blaqryder is sharing his tale of laughter and despair surrounding what should have been a quick and easy dye job! My Mishap By: Blaqryder So, I decided during the July 4th weekend that I wanted to dye my hair PLATINUM SILVER since I was tired of the salt and pepper grey look. I bought what I thought was the right color hair dye and without any help from my wife decided to use the bottle. Well needless to say the color desired was not what I ended up with! It turned out almost lilac with hints of pink which would not have gone over well in a corporate office. I had to enlist my wife’s assistance to avoid looking like a circus clown on Monday or better yet, in front of her family on the 4th! She ended up bleaching the color out as best as she could and I ended up BLONDE! Oh well, I always heard than blondes have more fun! Needless to say MEN .... dying your hair is best left to folks that know what the hell they are doing!! DON’T DO IT!!!

When it comes to cleansing only shampoo once a week and in the meantime cowash your beard, using a conditioner or a co-wash product, as often as needed.

1 2

Once your beard is dry reapply your beard oil or moisturizer to ensure moisturizing.

After showering, or when the beard is wet, is optimal time to moisturize your beard with your favorite beard oil/cream/butter and arrange, comb, and groom.

3 4

If your beard is overly dry avoid combing or brushing it; especially if you’re trying to maximize your length... in this state it’s more likely to break. .

SHAVING CREAM

If you don’t like using shaving creams that contain a plethora of chemicals that you can’t pronounce, why not make your own from ingredients that you can trust. To get a soft and creamy mixture I used the following ingredients:

½ cup of shea butter ½ cup of coconut oil 2 tablespoons of olive oil 10 drops of organic peppermint oil (or oil of your choice) Place in a glass mixing bowl and whip with a hand mixer or blender. 5 minutes at medium speed Once mixture is fluffy (like whipped cream) add peppermint oil and mix with a large spoon. Transfer your shaving cream to the container of your choice. (I used a mason jar with a lid) Remember to store in a cool place. If the shaving cream melts place in the refrigerator for a while and then blend it again. Try different oils and natural ingredients to customize your shave. Enjoy!

TATTOOS...THE NEW SEXY There was a time when tattoos were for sailors and assorted bad boys... but something has changed over the last couple of years. Tats are the new sexy accessory for men and women, I often find myself eye stalking their tatted-up forearms and falling in love. Shows like Black Ink Crew, and Ink Master have brought the art of tattooing to the mainstream and now the ink artists are now well-known celebrities.

SOME FAST RULES FOR TATTOOS 1. Pick your design carefully, think twice about inking on a boyfriend or girlfriends name. 2. Work with your artist on the design to avoid regrets. (see #5) 3. Choose a spot for your tattoo that is compatible with your lifestyle; If you work in a corporate environment you may not want a facial tattoo. 4. Follow your artist’s rules for caring for your tattoo. 5. Regrets... you can have it removed or inked over.

A

n artist makes a special connection when their audience feels the emotion in their songs.Donell Jones’smash Where I Want to Be exemplifies that connection. My heart breaks a little every time I hear that song because it feels like he is speaking to me. Never mind that the lyrics do not tell my story, or yours. It feels real. And it is beautiful. Donell Jones is that singer-songwriter, musician and producer. He slow jams right up there among the best male vocalists. Up tempo fan favorite U Know What’s Up leaves no heads un-bounced or bodies un-swayed. You can’t help but groove on that. Smooth silky vocals and an undeniable swag in his tone and in his demeanor. He is approachable and confident, masculine and cool. Donell Jones understands the importance of and loves performing live for his fans. “As a singer-songwriter, there is nothing more special than getting out there on the stage and seeing how your words affect other people.” A lot has changed in the music industry since Jones began his recording career in the 90’s. The way we receive music has evolved with the introduction of Apple Music and Tidal, for example. As a musician and songwriter, he says it works for him in a number of ways, especially not having to go through a record company to put his music out, “it’s easy for people to get the music.” Jones is a family man as well. Married and the father of six children, he describes his family life as “incredible.” He credits his wife for elevating his personal pampering game from what he describes as kind of a “scruffy” bachelor routine to manicures, massages, and facials. “I’m definitely into pampering myself.”

WHERE HE WANTS TO BE! A conversation with R&B Singer/ Song Writer Donell Jones By: LaMesha Dorham

Did you know that.... Donell wrote his first song at the age of 12 Mariah Carey & YG samples the iconic “Where I want to be “ for her new single “I Don’t” Donell Jones penned songs for Usher, 702. Jones’ music was featured on the sound tracks Shaft and Scary Movie2

18

Page Magazine Men’s Issue 2017

Currently, Jones is performing spot dates around the country and as he says, “Singing my heart out.” When asked about artists he likes and who he would like to collaborate with, he mentioned Mary J. Blige (yes, please), Drake for a hip-hop/R&B dynamic duo, and Joe for a double shot of smooth creamy R&B goodness (Oh, heck yeah)! About where he is on his musical journey, Jones says: “As an artist we always think we can do better and be in a better situation.” On his personal journey, he states, “I’m happy. There is nothing I can say that I need or want. I’m just really happy with the person I am and who I am today.” So, yes, Donell Jones is already where he wants to be. From major productions like Fast and Furious 5, Hunger Games Catching Fire, to TV shows such as, The Game, Devious Maids, and Being Mary Jane, people are definitely taking notice. Blue is currently starring in ‘Media’,an upcoming TV One drama, but if you asked him five years ago where he would be, acting may not have been the answer. As a matter of fact, Blue had dreams of being a big NFL star. With hard work and rigorous practice, he was able to see that dream come to a reality. Unfortunately, that dream was short lived when his football career ended. For some, watching the one thing you worked so hard to achieve cease to exist would be devastating. Blue did not allow this to stop him nor did he seek pity from others. Blue’s words, “...having to stop playing football, set me up for what I am doing now”, really gives truth to that saying “everything happens for a reason”.

Sitting in on a class took a surprising turn when Blue found himself engaging in the class session. Even the acting coach approached him and asked how long had he been acting, and to her surprise Blue responded “I’ve never acted a day in my life”. The acting coach was completely blown away and suggested that he really should consider acting and embracing his natural gift while adding that he had the right looks to go along with his talents. Blue decided to listen to that advice and through hard work, sacrifice, and discipline, he was able to enter the acting world with a great force. Kimble shared with us that he enjoys acting so much because to him, there is no finish line. SOAK UP THE LOCAL ACTION ON THE BEAUTIFUL HAWAIIAN ISLAND OF OAHU! By: Larnett Glenn

If you’re looking for a little slice of paradise visit Oahu for a long weekend. Seriously, take a red eye flight out Thursday night and another back home on Monday. You will find yourself rejuvenated and you won’t even mind the long flight. Things to do: Catch a few waves at Waikiki Beach, get in some serious shopping in Honolulu, tour the Dole Pineapple plant and take home some sweet delicious fruit. Then you have to attend a luau; everyone does that so, here are a few things that you may not find in a tourist guide. 1. On your first night in town take advantage of your inability to adjust to the time change. Wake up around 5am and head to your nearest east facing beach to watch the sunrise. You will be glad you did.

Now let’s talk about the food! This has to be my favorite part of a trip to any of the Hawaiian Islands. Polynesian food is delicious & there’s always a fresh flower in your drink. Try any of the local spots and you can’t go wrong. There is also a big Japanese influence in Hawaii because of its proximity to Japan and the heavy tourism. So you will have an opportunity to try some Japanese delicacies that you may not find on the main land. But, my favorite are the ramen shops. The food is fresh and cheap and the flavors are unbelievable. PICTURES COURTESY OF L. GLENN

2. Give back to the community by packing some of your good used clothes to give away at a local shelter, volunteer to feed the homeless or spend a few hours helping at the turtle sanctuary. It will make your trip a little more meaningful. 3. Spend a day living like a local. Spend a Saturday morning at the Farmer’s Market at Kapiolani Community College. Head over to the North Shore and watch the surfers at Laniakea Beach. You might even consider snorkeling while there.

While everyone knows that eating plenty of fruits and vegetables is the ideal way to increase dietary fiber intake, this has always been easier said than done, particularly when getting out the door fast is a priority each morning. One notable attempt at adding fiber to breakfast in the 1990s was Kellogg’s Heartwise cereal. This touted psyllium as a prime ingredient, which has more soluble fiber than any other grain, and eight times more fiber than oat bran. Psyllium fiber comes from the husk, or outer coating, of the psyllium plant’s seed. The cereal, however, never really caught on and Kellogg’s stopped making it not long afterward.

No Time for Breakfast? Make a Smoothie Grab a nutritious breakfast on the go with fiber-filled smoothies and supplements

Historically speaking, breakfast was not always considered a distinct meal and it certainly was not always healthy. In the early years of Harvard University, breakfast consisted of “the three Bs”: beer, beef, and bread. That is a far cry from where we are today, where everyone wants a fast, healthy breakfast but too often settles for a doughnut and coffee, a fast food stop, or skips a morning meal completely. For decades, breakfast cereals have tried to bridge the gap between healthy and fast. However, as highly-processed, sugarladen cereals and snack foods have filled supermarket aisles, their success remains dubious at best. One downside of these highly-processed foods pushed on consumers in the name of convenience is that most of the natural fiber has been stripped out of them. This lack of dietary fiber has serious health consequences. Now those dedicated to improving their health and fitness – including heart health, weight control, normalized blood sugar, as well as regularity and colon health – are grabbing a nutritious breakfast on the go with easy, fiber-filled smoothies and supplements. Solving Our National Fiber Deficit Today 97% of men and 91% of women do not eat enough fiber, which can be a factor in some forms of heart disease, digestive disorders, and a host of other ailments, says the USDA Committee on Dietary Guidelines.

Kellogg was ahead of its time in recognizing psyllium as a fiber-rich superfood. Now psyllium husk is making a comeback both as a key element of healthy homemade smoothies and as a dietary supplement. In place of a sit down breakfast, more Americans are adding gluten-free psyllium husk to home blender made smoothies that include ingredients such as fresh or frozen fruit, milk, yogurt, honey, coconut, protein powder and peanut butter. “Psyllium husk helps to maintain cholesterol levels within the normal range to support heart health,” says Peter Finkle, Director of Quality Control at Yerba Prima, an Ashland, Ore.-based herbal supplement company. Numerous medical studies show that psyllium husk can help lower high LDL cholesterol levels, helping to support heart health. It also helps to maintain healthy cholesterol levels, including “good” high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol in the body’s bloodstream, which can help carry bad LDL cholesterol from the body. Taking psyllium husk daily can be a good preventive measure for heart health as well as digestive health. “To help maintain healthy cholesterol levels, psyllium husk is most effective taken daily at about 10 grams per day,” says Finkle. According to him, ten grams is about two servings per day of Psyllium Whole Husks or Psyllium Husks Powder. “Psyllium husks or powder disappear into smoothies and give them a nice shakelike texture.” For weight control, high-fiber foods like psyllium husks can help promote a feeling of fullness. Psyllium husk also supports health and weight maintenance by helping to maintain the body’s blood sugar levels in the normal range, slowing and leveling off the release of sugar into the bloodstream. This reduces stress on the body and minimizes the blood sugar spikes and crashes that often lead to hunger pangs. For anyone with irregularity, including those on a low-carb or gluten-free diet prone to not getting enough fiber, doctors often recommend psyllium husks to provide extra fiber in their daily intake. On contact with water, psyllium seed husk thickens into a gentle, gel-like substance. This acts like a broom to sweep waste from the colon, so it does not get re-absorbed through the colon wall back into the bloodstream to recirculate in the body. Psyllium also keeps the lining of the colon healthier, since it cleans out pockets in the colon that may accumulate toxic waste material. Since psyllium husk fiber provides a soft bulk and mass in the colon, it makes elimination easier and more comfortable.

Unlike stimulant laxatives, psyllium husks are gentle and not habit forming. Those who lack the time or ingredients to make a smoothie in the morning, yet still want their fiber without sugar, gluten or excess calories have another option in psyllium supplements like Yerba’s sugar-free, glutenfree, Orange Flavor Daily Fiber Formula. This uses natural stevia, extracted from the leaf of a plant long used as a drink sweetener in Asia, as a sweetener instead of sugar. Unlike typical “clear fiber” products that mostly support the growth of beneficial bacteria in the colon, the formula provides multiple health benefits with a full range of 5 fiber types (cellulose, hemicellulose, pectin, gums and lignin) in both essential soluble and insoluble fiber. This can help improve digestion, regularity, colon health, weight maintenance, and blood sugar regulation. As part of his morning routine, Finkle often stirs the Orange Flavor Daily Fiber Formula into a glass of milk. “The orange gives the milk a bit of a creamsicle flavor and the fiber adds a little shake-like consistency,” he says.

WHAT WOMEN WANT… Mental Foreplay

Let’s face it, contemporary dating

is a challenge; just talk to any single out on the “scene”. One reoccurring gripe amongst women are men who press for sex prematurely. Guys let me hip you to something. When a woman shows an interest, she more times than not can already see herself being intimate with you. So just fall back. Most of the time it’s the man who talks himself out of the honey comb by something he subsequently says or does. Fellas did you know that the brain is the largest sex organ in the body? Women want, excuse me; need to be mentally caressed and cerebrally massaged. When dating, especially in the early stages of getting to know her, refrain from sexual innuendos and any sexually charged topics. If she brings up a risqué subject change the topic. She certainly will take note that you didn’t seize the opportunity to go “there”. This will be intriguing to her and not put you in the

“typical guy” category. Now that you have her attention, take time to really listen to the things that she’s interested in. You may or may not be versed in said subject matter, but fear not. Google or any of the hundreds of search engines could turn you into an expert with a few key strokes. Now you can have a knowledgeable exchange which would no doubt impress her. Lately you can’t long before reading an online dating profile with the term “Sapiosexual” being thrown around. Hold on let me save you the google search. Adjective: Sapiosexual; (a person finding intelligence sexually attractive or arousing.) The wrap up here is that; most women want you to see them beyond their physical attributes. Get into their heads and they’re more likely to let you into their beds. ~@ceasarmason

WHAT WOMEN REALLY WANT… Just Listen! By Kelli J. Reid

Many men have women figured out but enough men don’t. Those who actually oblige women in what they want will make one of two choices. Some choose to use their knowledge to get and keep us. Others choose to use the knowledge to get us close enough so we like them but keep us far enough away so we don’t fall in love. Ultimately it’s up to us to decide what we will put up with. So what do some of us really want? Those of us who are not dangerously independent want a man who can take charge...that is when needed. :) . Let me rewind. When I say “dangerously independent” my definition is that of a person who loves to be in control...100% of the time. While being single ultimately means you are in control of all decisions for yourself, when you enter a relationship that control must be split with another person. A man who takes charge does not mean someone who tells us what to do but it can mean someone who can tell you who to call when your garbage disposal breaks down. Matter of fact, how about they call the repair person for you or fix it themselves?! Taking charge means they won’t play the high school game we all played; Girl: “What do you want to eat?” Boy: “I don’t know. What do you want to eat?” This continues until one person makes a decision. Taking charge means knowing

36

how to put us in our place when needed. And finally, taking charge means not letting us walk all over them. Because seriously ladies, when is the last time you fell for a guy who truly catered to 100% of your needs and did EVERYTHING you wanted them to do? Now that we’ve gotten over our control issues what else do we want? Hmm, well, how about someone who listens to what we say? Wouldn’t it be nice if we say, for example, we would love to go horseback riding and the next thing you know, you’re horseback riding? Wouldn’t it be nice if you mentioned how much you liked a pair of boots and he got them for you the next day? WAKE UP!! We all have dreams but that’s just one that doesn’t always come true. Listening entails learning your character. It entails learning your likes, dislikes and quirks. I’m allergic to seafood. Every guy I’ve dated finds this out early on since you typically dine out more often than not. I was dating this guy for about 6 months when he invited me over for dinner. He built up the meal so much that I went over there with a completely empty stomach. When I walk in he gives me a glass of wine as he dances around with anticipation. I ask what he made. Seafood. I politely take myself to Wendy’s. Clearly he didn’t listen.

What else do women really want? We want sex. While women don’t act upon it the same way men do, we do want sex. Most women don’t want their man to just think they’re “pretty.” Most women want their men to find them sexy. We all can’t be Beyoncé but we can unleash our inner Beyoncé behind closed doors. At the end of the day, men and women want the same things but we just place the wants in different priority orders. Knowing each other’s priorities is key to making the other happy. It’s really not that hard but sometimes people make it harder than it needs to be. Think good thoughts,

Are You Getting the Full Health Benefits of Turmeric?

A NEW APPROACH TO TURMERIC SUPPLEMENTS PROVIDES THE FULL SPECTRUM OF THE SUPERFOOD’S NATURALLY OCCURRING COMPOUNDS Turmeric is the top-selling herb in U.S. natural food stores for good reason, and while it is great to add turmeric to your diet, the most reliable way to ensure a daily dose of turmeric is through a dietary supplement. However, many turmeric products on the market today are concentrated extracts of just one of its active constituents, curcumin, and three problems plague curcumin-only products. Fortunately, a new approach to turmeric supplements is resolving many of these issues while offering the whole range of the superfood’s naturally occurring compounds to maximize its health benefits.

What is Turmeric?

Turmeric, which gives Indian curry and American mustard their distinctive yellow colors, has been used in Chinese and Indian herbal medicines for thousands of years. Western medicine has increasingly acknowledged its effectiveness in helping to prevent or relieve a wide range of ailments without the noted side effects of many traditional drugs. Inflammation plays a role in many chronic health issues, from joint aches and pains to serious health problems., Turmeric contains a host of anti-inflammatory compounds, including curcumin, that fight inflammation at the molecular level. Because of curcumin’s chemical structure and stimulation of the body’s antioxidant enzymes, it can also neutralize harmful free radicals in the body that can damage DNA, proteins, cell membranes, and other organic structures. In reviewing 700 studies of turmeric, in fact, the ethnobotanist James Duke, PhD. concluded in a 2007 issue of Alternative & Complementary Therapies that turmeric appears to outperform many pharmaceuticals in its effects against several chronic, debilitating diseases with virtually no adverse side effects. Recent research confirms that turmeric extract supports brain health, emotional health, heart health and immune system health, as well as reducing joint and muscle aches and pains. This ancient food, properly extracted and concentrated, is one of the greatest “healthy aging” supplements ever found.

Why full spectrum turmeric is critical

Second, some of turmeric’s active components are fat-soluble and some are water-soluble. Yet most products focus solely on the fat-soluble components and neglect the water-soluble ones. Third, to make matters worse, curcumin is very poorly absorbed by the human body. Some people compensate with massive doses in hopes of absorbing a little, but that approach is imprecise and can cause stomach upset. Many methods have been used to improve curcumin bioavailability. However, they often use a high proportion of fillers – typically 70 to 90 percent – and thus contain low levels of actual curcumin and even lower levels of other beneficial constituents. To resolve these issues, supplement manufacturers are now releasing turmeric extract products that contain curcumin plus the full spectrum of turmeric’s naturally occurring compounds. As an example, Yerba Super Turmeric features Super Turmeric extract, the world’s most bioavailable, full spectrum turmeric extract. Developed by two doctors, Super Turmeric combines a fat-soluble extract with a water-soluble extract, so it delivers all the beneficial components of turmeric. This results in rapid absorption through the gut, for immediate relief, plus 24-hour activity in the bloodstream for round-the-clock support. While adding turmeric to one’s diet will only become more popular as its health promoting attributes become more widely recognized, those selecting supplements with the full spectrum of the superfood’s naturally occurring compounds may enjoy the most complete benefits. For more info, email yerba@yerbaprima.com; visit www.yerbaprima.com; or write to Yerba Prima Inc. at 40 Jefferson Ave., Ashland, OR 97520 USA.

First, turmeric’s activity relies on the whole range of its naturally occurring compounds, not just curcumin. Other beneficial compounds are discarded when curcumin is artificially inflated to make up 95% of a turmeric extract.

WHAT’S YOUR CLASSIFICATION? TIPS FOR LANDING THAT JOB! By: Lisa M. Comrie

Categorically, there is only one classification you fall in when hitting the job market pavement. Or how the Coming of Age Millennials would say it; clicking the mouse. So what is this category and where do you fit exactly? First, before we get to your specific category let’s play a little game to see how mentally prepared you really are before stepping out into the job market. This one is going to be pretty simple and there are only 2 choices for your answers. “Yes” or “No”. Ready? Here we go: Question number -1. Do you need an education to land that dream job? 2. Do you need a diverse vocabulary to ace an interview? 3. Do you require a certain look to work in a specific industry such as warehousing, retail or advertising? 4. If you are a conservative dresser should you maintain your attire for a blue collar job interview? 5. Should you be nervous when going on an interview to a fast-food restaurant?

9. In today’s job market search is a one-page resume unrealistic? 10. Is it necessary to remember the receptionist’s name where you interview? The answer to all of the above are “Yes.” An education is not always obtained in a classroom setting, though it is highly recommended in today’s job market. Experience can get you hired. If you have years of experience in a particular industry and no formal degree consider taking an entry-level position and work your way to the top. Chances are, the company will find value in your knowledge, skills and work ethic and promote from within. This is where your diverse vocabulary comes in. Speak their language and you will find favor with the leadership team. Never compromise your values when it comes to attire. This will make leadership recognize you have the look and are prepared to step into a leadership role.

6. Should you be nervous when going on an interview to a fortune 500 company?

Nerves are a result of emotions. They cannot be controlled. Always do your best to find a focal point during your interview to decrease those emotions.

7. Is it appropriate to send an inquiry to the HR director or department head regarding your personal career interest if no job is being advertised?

Sending a query letter is highly recommended. Your name remains on top of the candidate list when a position becomes available.

8. Is it appropriate to quote information directly from a company website during your interview as though they were your own words?

Study the company website and dialog on the mission or vison statement during your interview. They will be impressed.

A one page resume is great for an easy read but chances are 60% of applicants will try to condense their experience to a one-pager. Start by preparing a journal or career portfolio to present in an interview. Do not forget your volunteer or pro-bono experience. This shows you are passionate about non-monetary causes. Always be courteous to the front office staff who greet you. Never forget their name. You may want to contact them in the future and make sure they remember you. Remember, classification has no gender. If you are seeking employment while you are currently or under-employed make a significant impact on the leadership team. Use what you have to get what you want. And ladies, if you happen to make more than your mate; pick up the check on a dinner date every once in a while. Trust me, he won’t be disappointed. Last but not least; your category and classification is “A Class Act.” There’s only one. Farrah Gray said -- “Build your own dreams, or someone else will hire you to build theirs.” Happy Hunting!
