Product Junkie Money Pedi’s.... I love sandals so that means I have to keep my feet cute at all times but especially in the Summer. I have to say that going to the nail salon for a bi-weekly pedicure is relaxing and I do look forward to going. I bring my own polish just in case a touch up is needed during the week. The skilled technicians really do a great job, when I leave I feel like I have a brand new pair of feet! Here is where the problem comes in... the Expense! It is true that you get what you pay for so I love going to a beautiful licensed salon with modern seating, customer friendly techs and don’t forget the complimentary wine or bottled water! Before arriving always say I’m just going to get the regular pedicure but once I get in the chair I’m all in, the massage feature is melting away the tension in my shoulders and the wine is clearing away the stress of the day. I’m feeling the love! The water is flowing in the foot sink at just the right temperature and the smell of fresh foot soaking minerals make me agree to the Premium Pedicure! So when I walk out of the salon 90 minutes later with these new feet... I have invested $85 (including tip) on this pedicure that may or may not last for two weeks, depending on what I do. Here is the math. Biweekly Pedicure Season starts in May through the end of September at 2 times per month that is roughly $855 and I’m only talking about pedicures. I may want to cut back on that just a little, maybe save the money for a plane ticket a fly off for awesome weekend getaway. With all this in mind I decided to do my own pedicures at least once a month. See my DIY Foot SPA on page 17.

any of you remember Niatia Kirkland best known as Lil Mama when her lip gloss was poppin. Since those lip gloss days, she’s transitioned to a beautiful woman that we’ve grown to love. Her stunning performance in VH1’s CrazySexyCool: TLC story as Lisa Left Eye Lopes left fans wanting more. We were given a glimpse of Left Eye’s world through Niatia’s natural talent. Inspired by her two musical parents she began rapping at an early age. When I knew that I was seriously into freestyling and had a gift, I brought it to my father’s attention to help me. Spending countless hours in the studio as a teenager paid off, Lil Mama went on to collaborate with Chris Brown, Snoop Dogg, T-Pain and many more. Through her hard work and dedication, Niatia hopes to build a notable portfolio as a musician, actress and leader. With a busy schedule, she still finds time for loved ones and plans on building a family of her own someday.

The Tea on Tee’s! A Little Graphic T-Shirt History.

It may be hard to believe but the graphic tee shirt has been around since the late 1930’s but the 60’s rock bands like The Beatles and the Rolling Stones took it to the next level. The iconic logos have been emblazoned in our minds and history forever. Throughout the 70’s and 80’s musical legends of all genres and the trendiest fashion designers slapped their logos and pictures on the coveted tee’s. Surprisingly in the late 60’s and 70’s screen printed and iron Tee’s expressed the thoughts of that generation from “End the Vietnam War” to “Disco Sucks.” Flashing forward to 2017 the political statements printed on graphic tee’s do not mince words: “Black Lives Matter” and “Nasty Woman” scream out the sentiment of the current state of the world…

GRAPHIC TEES r

By: Sherita Prye

Remember those old graphic tees you threw out in the early 2000’s? Well you should’ve stored them in a safe place because they’re back in style. From political statements to cute characters you can speak your mind without uttering a single word. Celebs like Rihanna, Kylie Jenner, and Kelly Rowland can’t get enough of them. The great thing about graphic tees is that you can pair them with any bottom and still look fabulous. Celebs are pairing tees with joggers, skirts, distressed jeans, and shorts. Graphic tees are simply the best

statement piece you could have in your wardrobe; instead of sporting the fitted traditional tee try an oversized graphic tees this summer. Crop top graphic tees are also a big hit this summer and can be worn casually or for a night out on the town. 90’s shows like Martin, Friends and Living Single along with iconic music groups serve as an inspiration for this summer theme. There’s no reason to be in a funk this summer about your body goals, this is an effortless trend you want to be a part of! Just put on a graphic tee, some

sexy heels and make a statement. We’re excited about this blast from the past. Nothing screams summer like a vintage graphic tee.

A SHORT STORY… New Looks in Denim Boyfriend Shorts and Cutoffs Let’s face it jeans are not going anywhere! Jeans have stood the test of time and are only getting better. In 1873 Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis were issued a patent for the process of adding metal rivets to pants. Strauss’ denim work pants or overalls as there were commonly called gave birth to our beloved JEANS! If you take notice you will see that all of the denim styles have completed the fashion cycle many times. Let’s take Bell Bottoms for instance popular in the late 1960’s and still popular today! Our Summertime favorite, Cut-off shorts really took off with the Daisy Dukes, coined after a character on the 70’s show “The Dukes of Hazzard.” Now I’m not sure that Daisy was the first one to cut off her jeans and make shorts because most of us had a pair of jeans that somehow shrunk in the wash or we out grew that became our favorite pair of cut offs!

4

It’s 2017 and the love for denim shorts is still the same but maybe the names have changed a little and maybe they have gotten bit shorter… again!

Work, Work, Work, Work, Work….. We all have to do it but why not find something you love! When Pete Seeger and Lee Hays wrote the renowned folk song “If I Had a Hammer” (circa 1949) I’m sure their notion was to be creative yet have fun at the same time. Not overlooking the hard work put in to song writing – but the idea of enjoyable labor; well that’s just an oxymoron if you’re really having fun while working. Isn’t it? Take summer jobs for instance. When you were young, working a summer job did not come without the angst of hard work. But it was fun. Maybe you had an opportunity to work with your fellow classmates or even your BFF. Whatever the tasks you faced -- a good time would be had by all. But now you’re all grown up and routine employment is a way of life and basic survival. Just hammering away day-afterday. No pun intended. But what if you were able to secure a creative gig and yes; believe it or not; have fun while actually profiting from a passionate labor intensive career move. Yes, I mean a part-time job. If you’re currently working but seeking employment elsewhere consider taking an offbeat job which highlights one of your hobbies. Consider your love for shoes or a quirky admiration for say, pens. Seeking a part-time opportunity in the shoe department of a boutique or a customer service opportunity with a unique luxury brand such as Mont Blanc might be just the approach to wangle your way into a new profession. If

47

you like to travel, seek opportunities with a cruise line. More than likely, you will be offered part-time hours and the likelihood of you finding happiness long-term is greater than you might expect. If you land one of these unique opportunities and discover somewhere down the road you absolutely hate what you’re doing – then it’s probably not your passion. You may like shoes but you’re not inevitably passionate about what makes the shoe come alive. Travel might be part of your long-term goals but serving seaside is not really in your plan. If you can get to the core of what you actually like you should be able to do three things. One, endure the politics of a business. Two, understand the divergence of changing business practices. And last, recognize the creativity of designers and their appetite for originality. If you can achieve all three, you may have seriously found a new career path. My only suggestion is: have fun. Take on an opportunity at ground-zero and most important; learn every aspect about the business model. Chances are, you’ll have fun and possibly meet some new and exciting people. During this experimentation you’ll make a little cash and at the end of your seasonal journey; you may find an alternative career opportunity. An important tip: Always check the bottom of a company’s website main page for the links “Careers or Career Opportunities.” It may open an unexpected door to your summer or your future.

Page Magazine Summer Issue 2017

Seeger and Hays wrote, what was later called “The Hammer Song” to defend and support their views of the labor movement. The 50’s were critical times for personal expression and the Hammer song’s lyrics were a characterization of independence. The song became so popular it was rerecorded by several artists. It also took on a poetic following by some degree of being adopted as a nursery rhyme. Its lyrical meaning soon suggested the significance of independence and hard work to school aged children around the world who sang the song with pride. As we know, independence is a call for identity and declaration. It’s a way of making an audible statement without uttering a word. It’s an approach to illustrate our talents. And what better way to express your talents than to land a parttime gig with a company you may truly enjoy the benefits of in the long run. One of my favorite classic artist quoted “I would rather die of passion than of boredom.” — Vincent van Gogh. Whatever you do in this life, have fun, never regret change and repeat those words; “Love My Career.” Happy Hunting! LMC

PACK LIGHT! Tips on How to Pack

What you Need for the Best Vacation Ever! By: LaMesha Dorham

Summertime is vacation time for many of us. We look forward for months through cold and snow or just long winters and dreary damp springs to the when we can bask in the warmth of sunny beachy days and sultry nights. Reservations are made, tickets are purchased and events are planned. Then those magical dates on the calendar finally arrive! Now all that’s left to do is pack, right?! Well for many occasional travelers especially, packing is a lot harder than it should be. We don’t want to overpack—really, but who wants to leave out the essential outfit, shoes, or sundries that really help make the trip? For sure car trips are easier to pack for—if it fits, it goes. Air travel, however, comes with restrictions on what, where and how your items are carried as well as baggage fees. If you are vacationing for about a week, here are 6 tips:

4 - Roll your clothes and put socks, and smaller items inside of shoes/ sneakers 5 - Invest in a couple packages of travel-sized toiletry bottles for your shampoo, lotion, body wash, etc. Whenever possible, leave the big bottles behind. 6 - Finally, weigh your bag! You want to know before you go that your bag does not exceed weight limits. Save that cash for cocktails on the *playa! If you are vacationing much longer and are not concerned with baggage fees, you might want to pack using space bags to get the max packed. This is especially good if you and your bae can share a single large suitcase. Do plan on ironing though! It is a good idea to compare airlines’ policies before booking your flights. Be sure to check the website for the airline you select for current fees, restrictions and other information. Ask frequent flyers you know for their pro packing tips too. *Beach in Spanish lol

1 - Make a list of everything you want to take (including meds) 2 - If possible, pack enough clothing for a week and do laundry if needed 3 - Coordinate your outfits so you can easily re-mix items and wear multiple combos with some of the same pieces

Market Trends Converge to Drive Sales of Affordable Wi-Fi Enabled Thermostats HVAC contractors poised to reap benefits as wholesale Wi-Fi enabled thermostat prices drop to level designed to meet high market demand Demand for Wi-Fi enabled thermostats is skyrocketing as consumers seek out the convenience of controlling home or office temperatures through their smart phones or tablets. This trend is being further fueled by the heavy marketing of sleek new models, like the Nest thermostat, that are now offered through electronics retailers. However, HVAC contractors have yet to reap significant benefits. Despite the availability of quality Wi-Fi enabled products from leading thermostat manufacturers, a mere 10-15% of residential and light commercial installations involve such models. The primary objection: a wholesale price point that is 4-5 times the cost of a traditional thermostat. This has created a market dynamic where demand for the technology is only coming from those willing to pay a much higher price for each unit – including installation costs and other mark-ups. As a result, leading thermostat manufacturers are working to drive down the costs while maintaining quality, superior control and broader options; all while trying to reach a level where price and demand meet in the “sweet spot” for broad market adoption. “Price has been one of the main hurdles to homeowners and small businesses turning to Wi-Fi enabled thermostats en masse,” says Scott McCleskey, owner of Synergy Air Specialists, a Forney, TX-based HVAC contractor with customers in the residential and light commercial markets.

enabled thermostats in a number of areas. As technology has improved, larger displays and faster, more compact, energy-efficient microprocessors have become available at lower price points. This has allowed leading manufacturers to deliver products closer to a 2x-3x price point – and dropping. “Falling component costs along with better technology is allowing some Wi-Fi enabled thermostats to wholesale for under $60,” says Glenn Moore, President of Braeburn Systems LLC, a Chicago-based manufacturer of thermostats, zoning systems, air filtration, humidification products and accessories. Yet these advances and lower prices do not mean sacrificing quality or precise temperature control. A few top Wi-Fi enabled thermostats brands, for instance, hold temperatures in a ±1° F range from the desired set point. Less reliable brands may vary by several degrees from the set point. Moore cautions that some of the Wi-Fi enabled thermostats sold direct to consumers through retail outlets have room to improve in this regard, with some relatively new to the HVAC controls market. “Less accurate thermostats mean less customer comfort, and potentially more call-backs to ‘fix’ unresponsive systems,” says Moore. “When it is cold in winter and your customer’s wife is cold, she will wonder why the heater hasn’t started. When it is hot in summer and your customer is sweating, he will wonder when the air conditioning will kick in.”

Beyond price, HVAC contractors recognize that quality must remain top-notch to avoid costly warranty and customer callback issues. As they also know well, device ease of use is a top priority because unnecessarily complex thermostat programming can turn off customers.

According to Moore, today’s most reliable thermostats meet industry standards such as those of the National Electrical Manufacturer’s Association (NEMA), an industry leading group that prepares and publishes standards for electrical, control and related technologies.

“Customers do not want equipment that complicates their lives,” says McCleskey. “Many are intimidated by programming. Thermostats and the apps that control them must be as intuitive and easy to use as possible, so customers don’t get frustrated or require a callback, which wastes time for everyone involved.”

While McCleskey had relied on another top brand for decades, he switched when he determined the Wi-Fi enabled thermostats from Braeburn satisfied his criteria for top-tier accuracy and ease of use at a significant discount from traditional pricing.

Priced for Mass Market Advancing technology has lowered the price of Wi-Fi

53

Page Magazine Summer Issue 2017

“With the price point dropping, Wi-Fi enabled thermostats are suddenly a lot more affordable,” says McCleskey.

“More people are willing to make the jump because they want the convenience of controlling their thermostats from bed, the sofa, or away from home with their smartphones,” adds McCleskey. “Our customers are getting what they want, our margins are healthier, and we are busier than ever.” When it comes to customer satisfaction and securing the Wi-Fi enabled thermostat sale, contractors understand that a simple, clean, easy to use app interface can make all the difference. Despite the ability of typical Wi-Fi enabled thermostats to handle a range of functions and schedules, many customers are daunted by the prospect of having to program the thermostat for each change of setting. Some of the most affordable Wi-Fi enabled thermostats, however, are streamlining their operation with intuitive smartphone apps that customers can understand and use at a glance. One such app, Braeburn’s BlueLink Smart Connect App for instance, uses smartphones’ familiar icon and menubased format. This allows easy viewing of indoor/outdoor temperatures as well as control of everything from temperature set points, humidity, fan and system settings, and even multiple thermostat zones while providing easy adjustment without programming. “With the Smart Connect app, you can make quick, easy adjustments without going through the whole programming process,” says McCleskey, who uses it to monitor multiple thermostats in his home and vacation home. “Adjusting temperature with up-down arrows and quickly copying temperature settings instead of having to enter them at each thermostat also simplifies the process,” says McCleskey. “The intuitive app eliminates frustration for many customers, particularly older ones who are less comfortable with technology.” For HVAC customers that essentially never part with their smartphones and the contractors who service them, affordable, high-quality, Wi-Fi enabled thermostats controlled by smartphones and tablets are poised to be the next big thing. “With the barriers of price and complexity dropping in the Wi-Fi enabled thermostatic control market, home, office, and light commercial customers are ready to buy for the energy savings, comfort and convenience,” concludes McCleskey. “I believe we have finally reached the market tipping point where customers will switch from traditional thermostats to Wi-Fi enabled ones.” For more info on low cost, Wi-Fi enabled thermostats, call Braeburn Systems Toll-Free 866-268-5599 (U.S.); +1.630.844.1968 (Outside U.S.); Fax 866.268.8897; visit www.braeburnonline.com; or write to 2215 Cornell Avenue, Montgomery, IL 60538. Organic Psyllium Now in Veggie Caps All natural, plant based, delivery system promotes regularity, heart health, and weight control For those seeking a vegan, organic, gluten-free way to promote regularity, heart health, and weight control, Yerba Prima now offers organic psyllium in capsules made entirely from vegetables. Unlike gelatin based capsules, created from bone and other animal products put through a process to make a gel-like substance, veggie caps are created using cellulose, which is naturally derived from plants and allows rapid delivery to the body. Those interested in the health benefits of all natural, organic supplements will also appreciate that doctors often recommend psyllium to provide extra daily fiber for anyone with irregularity. On contact with water, psyllium thickens into a gel-like substance. This acts like a broom to sweep waste from the colon, so it does not get re-absorbed through the colon wall back into the bloodstream to recirculate in the body. Psyllium also keeps the lining of the colon healthier, since it cleans out pockets in the colon that may accumulate toxic waste material. Unlike stimulant laxatives, psyllium is gentle and not habit forming. In support of heart health, medical studies show that psyllium can help lower high LDL cholesterol levels. It also helps to maintain healthy cholesterol levels, including “good” high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol in the bloodstream. This aids in the removal of bad LDL cholesterol from the body. High-fiber nutrients like psyllium can also promote a feeling of fullness, which assists with weight control. PRESERVING THE HISTORY OF HISTORICAL BUILDINGS AND WINDOWS

Unique “soundproof” windows dramatically reduce outside noise and increase energy efficiency with a hands-off approach to the original windows “Windows are one of the most important and integral characterdefining features of historic buildings,” states the D.C. Historic Preservation Review Board in its publication Window Repair and Replacement Preservation and Design Guidelines. “They provide a sense of scale, craftsmanship, proportion and architectural styling.” As such, the primary objective of historic commissions and review

55

boards, not to mention federal and local preservation statutes, is to ensure the existing windows remain intact whenever possible. For this reason, repair is often recommended over replacement with more modern, double-paned windows that can quickly ruin a building’s character and charm. Repairing aging historic windows, however, has limits. Although glass can be replaced and weather stripping installed, single pane windows do not provide the “air gap” that is the key to the noise reduction and thermal efficiency of the double-pane approach.

Page Magazine Summer Issue 2017

Fortunately, an alternative approach preserves the historic and embraces the modern while not altering the original window. Instead, a unique “second window” is installed on the interior that can be opened or closed like the original. Unlike storm windows or glazed panels, these “soundproof” windows maximize both exterior noise reduction and thermal efficiency, and are found in historical districts and sites nationwide. Maintaining Historic Character Owners of historic properties have good reason to upgrade their windows. While beautiful, the traditional single pane windows found in historical properties are particularly

prone to external noise intrusion. In addition, the design offers poor thermal insulation properties. Lawrence Posner sought to preserve the historic 10-foot double hung windows on four of his Victorian cottages, which were certified by the National Park Service. Yet these picturesque cottages, including one he was living in, were located close to the blaring horns of a railroad. “There’s a double set of train tracks between the cottages and the river, and every few feet the trains would blow their horns,” says Posner. “It was deafening. I had to wear earplugs to sleep. There’s nothing like historic double hung windows for aesthetics, but the windows let the racket right in.” The beauty of Posner’s cottages and their location, Fort Conde Village, a Mobile, Alabama community of unique Victorian properties meticulously restored to their original design, contrasted sharply with the racket of the railroad. Fort Conde Village, located next to Fort Conde, a pre Revolutionary War fort, is known for its historic details, from the buildings to the gas lamps that light its cobblestone streets. For Posner, replacing the historic windows of his cottages was not really an option because he did not want to compromise the aesthetics, and getting approval to do so from the National Park Service would be difficult, if not impossible. Posner turned to Soundproof Windows, Inc, a company with expertise engineering windows for some of the most noise sensitive environments in the world, such as recording studios. The company has created a second, inner soundproofing window not visible from outside the building that is ideal for historic buildings. The product is custom designed specifically to match – and function – like the original window. It is also designed to be installed quickly. The inner window essentially reduces noise from entering on three fronts: the type of materials used to make

the pane, the ideal air space between original window and insert, and finally improved, long-lasting seals. The combination can reduce external noise by up to 95%. The first noise barrier is laminated glass, which dampens sound vibration much like a finger on a wine glass stops it from ringing when struck. An inner PVB layer of plastic further dampens sound vibrations. Air space of 2-4 inches between the existing window and the soundproof window also significantly improves noise reduction because it isolates the window frame from external sound vibrations. Finally, the company places springloaded seals in the second window frame. This puts a constant squeeze on the glass panels, which prevents sound leaks and helps to stop noise from vibrating through the glass. When choosing such soundproofed windows for a historic renovation project, the most objective measure of sound reduction is the window’s Sound Transmission Class (STC) rating. In this rating system, the higher the number the more noise is stopped. A typical rating for standard windows is 26 to 28, for example. The acoustic soundproof windows, by comparison, earn a 48 to 54 STC rating.

soundproofing, they also have value in terms of lowering heating and cooling costs. “The windows have helped to prevent cold drafts from entering and improve insulation and energy efficiency,” he says. “That’s important to long term comfort as well.” With an upgrade to the latest soundproof windows, renovators and owners no longer have to settle. Now they can preserve the historic character of properties while achieving modern comfort. For more information, contact Soundproof Windows, Inc. at 4673 Aircenter Circle, Reno, NV 89502; call 1-877-438-7843; email sales@ soundproofwindows.com; or visit www.soundproofwindows.com By Randy Brown Randy Brown is the owner of Soundproof Windows, Inc. (www.soundproofwindows.com) headquartered in Reno, Nevada. Brown initially developed the first version of a Soundproof Window to solve his own noise problems. His background knowledge about windows came from working with his father, who worked for a high quality storm window company in the 1960’s and 1970’s. With many requests from friends and family, Randy started Soundproof Windows, Inc. in 1998.

“The soundproof windows saved my life,” says Posner. “They would save anybody’s life if they had to deal with that sort of train racket and noise on a daily and nightly basis.” Soundproofing the windows of historic buildings can also significantly reduce energy costs. Adding the inner window provides an additional layer of insulation with better insulation values than the best low-e, argon gas filled double paned window. This can reduce heat loss by 77% or more for single paned windows. The added insulation stops unwanted air infiltration around and through window seals, and can reduce the heating-cooling portion of energy bills by 15-30%. According to Posner, while he purchased the windows primarily for
