Hello Loves! Welcome to PAGE Magazine’s Second Annual Men’s Issue. There is definitely a lot of things going on in the world around us; some we can overlook and some things that we wish that we could un-see or un-hear, for that matter. So, with all that I hope that PAGE can allow you a few minutes to escape for some fun and a chance to focus on the small things that make life truly awesome.

We had a blast working on this issue, actor Jay Hunter was a pleasure and a natural; he really knew how to work the camera. Michael Rainey Jr. aka “Tariq” the bad boy of Power was fantastic and brought his youthful joy to the set. Thanks to both Men for bringing peaceful and positive vibes to the PAGE Magazine set.

Our journalists had some great conversations with notable men; actor/director Kenny Young, actor/trainer, Derwin Phillips to name a few. We thank you for bringing your journeys to our readers.

So once again we bring to you the fashions, gadgets and grooming tips that we personally love for our men and you and yours too! Every great suit deserves a standout tie and accessories...and where would you be without the best timepiece to keep you on schedule.

MEN FIX YOUR FUNKY FEET! Some men may not want to sit in the nail salon for a pedicure, if that’s you, try this easy DIY foot soak to help repair those dry cracked heels. She will appreciate it!

The ingredients needed are everyday items found right in your kitchen. it’s just that simple.

½ cup baking soda (softens skin, helps treat toenail fungus) Contents of 2 herbal tea Bags (peppermint, chamomile are soothing) 1 cup Epsom Salt (great for scrubbing)

Mix all dry ingredients in a bowl and add half of the mixture to ½ gallon of water; if you don’t have a foot soaker just run enough water in the bath tub to cover your feet... in other words improvise but don’t use a pot that she cooks with! Choosing the Right Barber Many see the barber shop as a man’s place of refuge, a place where you can catch the game, bond with the bros or just sit and talk shit for a few hours. Although “joe’s barbershop” may be a cool place to hang out at, you still need that perfect cut at the end of the day.

How and What to Look for when Selecting a Barber

The first criteria in selecting a barber is to make sure he or she is licensed. | Ask a friend who always keeps a great cut for a referral. | Google a few shops, read the reviews. | Drop by a shop that interests you, look around see if the place is clean, if the barbers are well-groomed. | Ask the barbers questions; how long he has been in business, do you need an appointment, hours, etc.…

Remember, just because the shop is full doesn’t mean the barbers are great, people will continue to go to barbers and complain afterwards.

When you finally choose one, ask for something simple like a shape up, see how it goes from there, if you’re satisfied you may have a keeper. Don’t be afraid to ask for the style you want; some barbers just turn out the same cut over and over again like an assembly line… so speak up.

Career Actor Jay Hunter was a high school English and History teacher prior to pursuing an acting career. “Once a teacher always a teacher,” declares Hunter. The desire for acting started when he was nine, his classmates were his first audience. “I used to act up in all my classes during school; little did I know that it was going to lead to a career in acting.”

Hunter’s ambition paid off and won him a part on Tyler Perry’s If Loving You Is Wrong. His character “Ian” is a newly divorced father; Hunter states that he relates to him in many ways. Although he doesn’t have any children of his own he understands Ian’s parenting relationship. Jay also identifies with “Ian’s” “yearning to establish a connection with costar Heather Hemmens (Marcie). “I’ve been in that situation where you meet a woman that’s amazing and you’ll do anything to get her.”

On playing the “bad guy” vs. the “good guy,” Hunter states that in his mind he’s always the good guy. “There’s always something viewers can gain from the character no matter what side he’s on” Hunter believes that the “bad boy” character is important and reflects on real life scenarios.

Love Jay likes a woman with drive and ambition. “I’m not afraid to dream, so I’m attracted to someone who’s also not afraid to dream.” Hunter states that these factors bring flavor into your life period. “We can talk about anything but if there’s no passion it means nothing.”

“When you see that love and drive you also know the same thing is going to ooze into your relationship.” According to Jay it’s a subliminal attraction!

“When you look at people that have been together for so long and hear them talk, you hear the passion behind it and see that their love is reciprocal.”

Success Hunter says it seems as if acting fell into his lap. However, he didn’t know the journey to success would be so difficult. “Hey man you’re going to have difficult times” are the words of encouragement Jay would give to his younger self. He also trusts those words would’ve hindered him from advancing forward. Jay’s road to success wasn’t always easy; “if you don’t have trials, tribulations, and road bumps along the way, you’ll be less of the person you are today. You’re going to feel like you won’t succeed but don’t give up. It’s going to rain but the sun always comes up in the morning.”

Dream Chaser Jay expresses the importance of following your dreams and honing your talents. “A wise man once told me the greatest potential lies in the ground because there were so many young men that were full of potential and never reached it.” He explains that many men die without realizing their purpose. Jay encourages men to stay focused on the things that they love. “Whether it’s for your family, starting a company or discovering a cure for cancer. You won’t know unless you keep striving to fulfill that purpose.”

Memorable Tyler Perry Moment Jay’s most memorable moment working with Tyler Perry was during his first time on set. “He gave me the keys to this brandnew Audi because Ian (the character I play) is wealthy. I got in the car and just sat there staring at the wheel because I have driven “lemons” all my life, Tyler looked at me and said, “Jay man do you know how to drive?”

Favorite thing to do “I’m a free spirit guy that likes to do what he wants. I love watching NFL Football on Sunday, that’s the one day where I put everything down.”

Cool Moment Jay is a big comic book fan that has checked starring in a Marvel project off his bucket list. “My character was an alien in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D and the main characters were my prisoners. I enjoyed being a part of the show because it’s not every day that you get to walk into work and be an extraterrestrial human being.”

PAGE recently caught up with Michael Rainey Jr. aka Tariq St. Patrick from Power; The Starz Network highly rated crime drama series which lists Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson as Executive Producer. 17-year-old Michael is a key player in the continuing story-line as the son of a former drug lord turned business man. Michael brings the realism of confusion and teenaged bravado to the role which makes this a must-see series. Although Tariq is the kid you just want to shake some sense into, Michael is a well-rounded young man with his head on straight! Michael has been featured in several films including The Butler, Barbershop 3 and will be seen in the upcoming action movie 211 staring Nicholas Cage and the NETFLIX film Amateur.

PAGE: What was it like shooting with Nicholas Cage Michael: Working with Nicholas Cage was good. He said I was his favorite co-star, coming from a legend that is special!

PAGE: What would be your fantasy role?

Michael: I always wanted to play a star basketball player in a movie, so I would say Amateur was my fantasy role.

PAGE: We know that you are in to music; who’s on your playlist?

Michael: I’m going to look at my playlist… Travis Scott, 88 Glam, Lil Uzi Vert, Uno The Activist, Trippie Redd, Yung Bans, Gunna, Lil Yachty.

PAGE: What is the is #22 about?

Michael: All my friends call me 22, that’s what I go by; my birthday is on September 22 my moms’ birthday is on Feb 2, two is my favorite number and I see it everywhere.

PAGE: You speak Italian… What’s your best pick up line? Are you still studying the language? (Michael learned Italian at the age of 10 for a role in the film Un Altro Mondo) Michael: I don’t have a pick-up line but, Ciao, come stai(Hi, how are you?) My mom found a teacher for me that I call twice a week and we have a conversation to keep me refreshed on my Italian.

PAGE: Are you anything like Tariq?

Michael: We are kind of similar both are laid back but no, Tariq be bugging I’m just chilling.

PAGE: How do you handle all the attention that you receive?

Michael: I just take pictures with people that come up to me, it’s cool but some people approach the wrong way yelling “Why did you kill your sister” I’m like you chill I’m not Tariq but for the most part it’s cool!

PAGE: What’s next for you?

Michael: I’m directing a short film this summer, I’m looking forward to it, kind of scared, I’ve never done this before, but it should be cool.

PAGE: Do you miss being a regular teenager?

Michael: I feel like I am a regular teenager, I chill with my friends all the time, making beats in the studio. I’m regular.

PAGE: Do you have any hidden talents?

Michael: I play the piano, I was doing that before I started acting. I was at my grandparents’ house and heard a song on the radio, when I went home I just started playing it. I have been playing by ear ever since.

PAGE: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Michael: Producing and directing movies, have a business, being an entrepreneur.

PAGE: Do you have any advice to young people that might want to get into acting?

MICHAEL: My advice to anyone is to stay motivated, stay focused, don’t let anyone change your path, don’t try to live your life to make others happy. Stay true to yourself.

PAGE: Who keeps you motivated?

Michael: My mom keeps me on track, and 50 Cent, he motivates me a lot and I look up to him and the moves that he makes keep me motivated.

Get Over It! HOW TO GET OUT YOUR OWN WAY. By: Kelli J. Reid

In this article I decided to write about something a little different. I feel like I always write about how to improve relationships, looking in the mirror in relationships, and blah, blah, blah. I wanted to write something else. Because let’s face it, if you’re not married, you’re single.

And hey ladies, I’m not married. I may have a live in, but I’m still not married. At the end of it all us single ladies can go through some ish. I wanted to be realistic. So here it goes!

So you’ve been hurt.

If you’re human you’ve probably been hurt in some form or fashion.

When it comes to dating, you’ll have peaks and valleys and experience bumps and bruises. In the end all you need to do is put on your big girl panties and keep it moving. I mean seriously, bey bey, you are not the only one who has ever been hurt so um, get over it. Don’t get me wrong, it’s ok to cry. But it’s not

ok to wallow. What is wallowing?

Well baby girl, look it up in the dictionary. But even then you’re not going to find a specific time frame that constitutes wallowing. I’m just saying. Only you can determine the length of time for wallowing. In my mind the time frame is just a long period of time feeling some type of way. And don’t act like you don’t know what “some type of way” is. My advice to you is to just stop wallowing! Like really, how does it benefit you? I mean, does it make you feel better? If it does then by all means, continue. But I’m thinking it doesn’t add any value to your life.

But hey, who am I? He ain’t studying you.

So while you spin your wheels attaching a time frame to “wallowing”, the guy who you’re “wallowing” over is living his life like it’s golden like Jill Scott. He’s out kicking it, going to Vegas with the fellas, catching up on the NBA

Finals, riding his bike and doing whatever else makes him happy.

Translation, he ain’t studying you.

Meanwhile, you’re over there, kicking off your heels after a long day at work, sipping wine, eating left over Chinese food, reading the fortune cookies in hopes of finding positive vibes for the future, and watching re-runs of Living Single. How’s that working out for you?

You’re gonna learn today! (In my Kevin Hart voice.)

Now that we’re done “wallowing” in those feelings try learning from what happened. None of us are perfect and we won’t ever be. But we can always strive! If you’re the chic looking for closure, try finding it on your own or through therapy.

Looking for closure from the person who you broke it off with or vice versa, might not turn out the way you expect. Spare yourself the disappointment and look deep within yourself and what you may

have done to contribute to the break up. It doesn’t mean you’re in the wrong. The purpose is to learn and grow from the experience. Case in point, I, was in a long distance relationship, that broke up was after looking for engagement rings and all. You couldn’t tell me that we weren’t going to get married, have three babies and live happily ever after. That break up was ten years ago lol. At any rate, he cheated, one could say he was totally in the wrong but he wasn’t. See, while in this long distance relationship I had male friends. Some of which I met prior to him and some I met through existing friends. Our conversations would consist of me saying which male friend I was hanging out with and letting him know about coed weekend trips to come. It was complete transparency, well, at least on my part anyway. Needless to say, he never questioned me but maybe he should have. Who knows, in my mind he may have cheated because he thought I was cheating, because who goes on co-ed weekend trips when they have a man? Yeah, that would be my younger self. Oh, did I mention he was 8 years my senior? Yeah, definitely a learning experience. Needless to say, in this lifetime those co-ed weekend trips are non-existent, well, at least when I’m in a relationship and all. Lesson learned!

a good idea when going through a break up. Who knows, maybe reading old text messages or going to that cool little spot that you used to go to on Wednesdays isn’t a good idea either. That probably isn’t good management of your feelings. But again, who am I? For me, creating a break up playlist that, which by the way must include Beyoncé’s Irreplaceable, got me through.

One day you’re going to learn to predict your pain versus letting your pain predict you. Look at heartbreak as a lesson learned. Become a better person because of it. At the end of the day, we are only in control of our reactions. Everything else in between is out of our control. While we can’t control 100% of our feelings but we can manage 100% of them.

Author Ceasar Mason tells us his view of dating and relationships.

Ladies, I’m sure we have all spent hours trying to figure out just what “that man” was thinking, from, why didn’t he call me, and does he really want a relationship?

I decided to call my friend Ceasar Mason, author of “On call: Escorting in Atlanta” to get some answers to these puzzling questions.

Since he is single, I asked him what attributes he’s looking for in a woman, I must say that I was elated when the list didn’t start with Super Model looks!

Of course there are some definite deal breakers… and the actions of desperate women are high on the list.

“I don’t like when women aim straight for the husband without even trying to develop a friendship. Also women who are into titles turn me off for sure.

I want a woman to like me for who I am, not for what I do for a living or who I associate with,” added Mason.

As far as sex is, concerned he identifies the perfect partner as a woman that is uninhibited and comfortable with her body. I like women who are sensual and not afraid to be the aggressor. Did you get the answer that you presumed? Most men are not as complicated as one would think.

As predicted, men are full of pride and it some instances, they have a difficult time expressing themselves.

However, most men can agree that the welfare and love of their family takes precedence. A man feels an immense level of pride within himself if he can provide for, and protect his family. A successful career or being financially sound is very important to a man as it aids in his ability to provide for his family. Although men want to have the ability to provide for their families, they also find peace in knowing that their mate will be able to step up and pinch hit if needed. Most people say that money

doesn’t buy happiness, however, it pays the bills and it provides a sense of pleasure, pride, and a level of personal achievement when a man can successfully provide for your family.

Having a strong relationship creates great value for men as well. Men view success in a relationship on a number of different levels. Men are turned on visually, and want to be physically attracted to their mates, and they also want to be attractive to their mates. According to men, sex is a huge part of the relationships. Men want to have sex often and want to be pleased by their mates. However, as men mature, they look at relationships from another perspective. Men want women to be their best friend and lover, a life partner, and someone they can trust and count on in times of need. Men have an instinctual urge to protect, but they also need to be nurtured.

In essence, men want successful relationships and want to be happiness for themselves and their partners. Whether it is sexually complementing each other, holding down the fort when needed, men rely on women to be their backbone and provide the level of intimacy needed to continue to arouse them mentally and physically. A man takes pride in his abilities to lead his family, as he will be his children’s most important role model, which in turn will be his most important job.

I recently studied compensation disparities for women in the workplace from the Institute for Women's Policy Research.

Though I’m well acquainted with the history of paygrade disparagements, I was compelled to look further into the subject of salary compensation for men vs. women. So I dug a little bit deeper into the likes of national statistics. I came across some charts published directly from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Take a look at the statistics on the chart below. It comes directly from the US Department of Labor – Bureau of Labor Statistics: Women's and men's earnings by age in 2016 AUGUST 25, 2017 In 2016, median weekly earnings were $749 for women age 16 and older who were full-time wage and salary workers. Why is this happening? More importantly, how do we put an end to this imbalance? Ask yourself a few questions. How do we close this gap? Is it politically controlled through years of norms? Is a corporate fundamental based on historic male leadership in the workplace? Is it based on antiquated and so called conventional observation of female ability in the eyes of corporate America? Why a female engineer is paid 20% less than her male counterpart and yet has the same - if not more education, experience, insight and possibly business acumen is beyond me. So I continued the research and came across more interesting data. This information is published directly from Institute for Women's Policy Research.

“Women are almost half of the workforce…..IWPR tracks the gender wage gap over time in a series of fact sheets updated twice per year. According to our research, if change continues at the same slow pace as it has done for the past fifty years, it will take 41 years—or until 2059—for women to finally reach pay parity. For women of color, the rate of change is even slower: Hispanic women will have to wait until 2233 and Black women will wait until 2124 for equal pay.” (https://iwpr.org/about/).

Women around the world are empowered to set treads, make change and exceed in every area of their careers. Why are we still trending in that 20% underpaid category? With a stronger message our voices should roar in protest of these pay disparities. I believe in time this disproportion will come to an end.

DR. DARNELL HUNT Dr. Darnell Hunt is one of the foremost authorities and in-demand public intellectuals on the subject of race in media. He is Dean of Social Sciences at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he is also Professor of Sociology and African American Studies. Prior to becoming Dean, Dr. Hunt served as Director of the Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies at UCLA. Dr. Hunt has written extensively on race and media, including numerous scholarly journal and popular magazine articles. He has also published four books about these issues: Screening the Los Angeles “Riots”: Race, Seeing, and Resistance, O.J. Simpson Facts and Fictions: News Rituals in the Construction of Reality, Channeling Blackness: Studies on Television and Race in America, and Black Los Angeles: American Dreams and Racial Realities.

He was lead author of UCLA’s 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 Hollywood Diversity Reports, which examine the employment of women and minorities in front of and behind the camera in film and television. CAL LEWIS College graduate, convicted felon, author… Cal Lewis makes a compelling mark on the literary world with his new novel, “Maxed Out.” While serving time in federal prison for cybercrimes, fraud and identity theft, Cal used his gift for writing to get him through his 70-month sentence.

Lewis stated that although there was always the threat of violence behind the prison walls, it was more of a mental battle than anything.

Lewis did not readily recognize his talent for writing but those around him did, and when he started writing it with ease; he now understands the power behind the written word.

In addition to auditioning, I’m also growing my roster of celebrity clients as a trainer. I have some clients that are currently getting ready for album releases and motion pictures as we speak.

Presently I would say no, but you never know what the future will hold. My focus is acting and hers is to continue growing her fitness company and presence.

How was working on the film Four Brothers?

"Four Brothers" was a great experience! Working alongside Mark Wahlberg, Andre 3000, and Tyrese Gibson was a great honor, they're all well-known and established. Even though this role was a while back it's really cool to know that to this day people actually recognize me from the basketball scene I had with Mark.
