EDITOR’S LETTER

Wow I can’t believe how fast this year has gone by. PAGE has completed two full years of publication. As a new magazine it is always important to find your niche, and we think that our online readers, print subscribers and social media followers have helped us tremendously in our endeavor.

With PAGE we set out to build something from scratch… we are not a huge corporation we are truly a couple of people who love photography beauty, fashion and interesting stories. We strive to present interesting stories without bombarding our readers with wordy articles, we want to present worthwhile reading coupled with appealing graphics and layouts. As we venture into 2018, PAGE will continue to share our favorite products, people, adventures and stories with you.

In this issue our cover features the beautiful singer Coko Clemons of SWV fame and her handsome son Jalen. I can’t tell you how much fun we had shooting the photos for this issue; I really have to hand it to Coko for putting up with our off key singing of SWV hits!

Jalen or @paidwithjays as he known on IG, was an absolute professional in front of the camera. Many thanks to mother and son for sharing their personal lives with us for this special Holiday Issue of PAGE. The Me Too Movement is real but it is a shame that abuse even exists on this level. Read Quiet on page 30. Don’t let your voice be silenced by anyone.

Photographer Nathan Pearcy, is a small town guy from Asheville, NC. While growing up in Atlanta, he knew that photography would be his life-long passion. As a creative individual the aspect of building and crafting beauty through the lens was very appealing. Nathan’s interest in architecture developed into a career as a graphic designer.

Landing an opportunity at Kontrol Magazine, Six Twelve Magazine and others, Nathan further developed his talents which included working behind the camera.

Over the years Nathan has become the go-to celebrity photographer and has worked with Kenya Moore, Keke Wyatt, Luke James, Raheem Devaughn, Sevyn Streeter, Music Soul Child, Tami Roman, Floetry, Elise Neal and so many more.

Melodiq Storm Melodiq Storm was born and raised in the Bronx, NY in the 1970’s. It was here that she witnessed the emergence of Hip Hop and the arts, which has greatly impacted her life and influenced her body of work. Storm comes from a close knit family, and credits the Matriarchs of her clan for introducing her to and inspiring her love of all types of music, literature, writing, and dance. Growing up in a socioeconomically challenged environment had both positive and negative effects on her development, all of which is reflected in her poetry. Melodiq was always surrounded by creative beings and was exposed to bigger and better things outside of her Bronx Bubble! Through hard work and dedication, she attended a prestigious University in the North Eastern United States, graduating in less than four years. She then moved back to the NYC Tristate area to ignite her career, which has evolved and transformed in several different industries throughout the years. Although she has had a successful corporate career, her love of poetry and the arts has never faded. Melodiq’s goal is to give her lifelong passion life through her voice, and to share relatable, heartfelt vibrations with all. She is a woman, a mother, a sister, a cousin, a lover, a poet, and a friend. Melodiq Storm will debut her first book, a collection of spoken word poetry and prose, in early 2018. As a busy Mom of two sons Jazz and Jalen, wife and entrepreneur, Coko credits her mother and husband Mike for their help when it comes to juggling her touring schedule. Family support allows her to go on the road knowing that her youngest son Jalen will be well taken care of. With all that she is doing; Coko still wants to do more and plans on starting a blog to empower women in their 40’s.

Clemons wants them to know that they are fabulous can do anything that want to do.

For all young women contemplating a career in the music biz, Coko’s advice is to consider writing in order to receive the greatest financial rewards.

I can’t express how excited I was when I met Coko Clemmons.

I promise you that I know the words to every SWV song! PAGE Magazine was fortunate to have the opportunity to capture Coko and son Jalen for our holiday cover.

In 2017 WEtv gave us a glimpse into the lives of the ladies of SWV through the reality show “SWV Reunited.” We were able to see the ups and downs that each of them experienced and how they overcame their challenges. With this in mind I asked Coko if she would change anything in her life thus far and received a firm “No.” “I am right where God wants me to be, everything that I have done and everything that has happened leads me to this moment and I am happy.”

For those who don’t know; Cheryl “Coko” Clemmons is part of the group Sisters With Voices better known as SWV. Formed in 1990, the trio consistently topped the R&B charts in the 90’s and 2000’s with a string of hits and are still on tour today. To their credit the group was presented with the 2017 Soul Train “Lady of Soul Award.” Coko expressed that she was honored to have this award

Coko said that she likes to be herself; to be unique and express her own style whether through fun hair colors to putting together vintage pieces of clothing. As our conversation came to a close, Coko shared something personal; she is Bi-Polar. She wants people to understand that there is no stigma connected to mental illness, we all need to be aware of it and seek help if needed. Coko stated that she takes here meds and goes on happily with her life.

MEET JALEN CLEMONS!

PAGE was happy to have Jalen Clemons the youngest son of Coko Clemons take part in our Holiday Cover Shoot. Although Jalen is only 14 years old and never modeled before, he was a natural and lots of fun as well, he lit up the set with his infectious smile and just may have a modeling career ahead of him. PAGE Recently caught up with Jalen and asked him a few questions.

PAGE: Jalen Tell us something about you?

JALEN: I’m a good kid, I don’t get into fights, I don’t get calls home from school, I run track.

PAGE: What do you do in your spare time?

JALEN: My grades. They are very good, I’m on the AB honor roll and actually passing math. I always find a way to get good grades and check my work and learn from my mistakes.

PAGE: Are more like your Mom or your Dad? JALEN: Definitely more like mom!

PAGE: Do you have any hidden talents?

JALEN: I sing and play the piano.

PAGE: How do you feel about Social Media?

PAGE: What do you buy?

JALEN: It’s great to an extent. But it can be a problem especially with school when rumors are spread, schoolwise its iffy you have to be careful.

JALEN: I really liked it and told my mom that I want to take modeling seriously PAGE: What are your goals as a 14-year-old?

JALEN: I most definitely want to go to college, I want to get into BCU and study dentistry and I want to start my own clothing line as well.

PAGE: What’s important to you right now?

PAGE: Where will you be in 10 years?

JALEN: I will be a successful dentist/business man, like I said earlier I want have my own clothing line.

2017 was a very good year for the Product Junkie! I have tried many new things and have discovered some that have become my must haves. Fortunately, I have not yet become jaded about the world of beauty. I still dream of spending 24 hours in Sephora and Ulta Beauty filling cart after cart with wonderful stuff! I must admit that when I first started my quest to find the best of the best beauty products, I would get so angry when the product didn’t work. Now, I just move on to the next thing! I have learned to repurpose products, like the elbow scrub that didn’t work; I used it on my heels and got better results lol! Looking back on all the products that I have tried in the last year, I am giving the official PRODUCT JUNKIE BEAUTY ITEM OF THE YEAR AWARD TO.... (imagine the drumroll please)

This acne treatment has consistently worked well for me in reducing the size and the redness that comes with an ugly blemish. I always grab 2 or 3 at a time, it costs about 2 bucks and worth so much more when it comes to having a clear complexion. So, going into 2018, I will continue on my journey of trying and liking or not liking beauty products. I’m hopeful that I will like more than dislike because it’s not easy coming up with DIY’s lol. DON’T LET WINTER WEATHER DRY YOUR HAIR OUT Try These All Natural Conditioners to Combat Dry, Brittle Winter Hair

If you think about it, what season is really good for your hair? Winter’s cold just like Summer’s heat can do a real number on your hair, no matter what type you have.

SALAD DRESSING HAIR MASK INGREDIENTS ½ cup of mayonnaise (any brand) 2 tablespoons of olive oil 1 egg yolk TOOLS Large tooth comb A conditioning cap or a plastic bag An old t-shirt Glass bowl or cup Large Spoon DIRECTIONS Combine mayo and olive into bowl Beat egg yolk and fold into mayo and olive oil mixture.

You can adjust the number of ingredients based on your hair length but don’t use too much and end up with greasy hair.

Use your hands to coat your hair, comb through and then loosely pile hair on top of your head cover with plastic cap and wait for an hour.

Rinse and pat dry with an old t-shirt. (the t-shirt keeps away the frizz) Style and go.

Repeat once a month.

AVOCADO PARFAIT HAIR MASK INGREDIENTS 1 Avocado 1 Ripe Banana ½ cup plain yogurt (any brand) 2 tablespoons of olive oil ½ teaspoon of pure honey (any brand) TOOLS Large tooth comb A conditioning cap or a plastic bag An old t-shirt Glass bowl or cup Large Spoon DIRECTIONS Peel and seed the avocado, peel the banana, mash together in glass bowl. Add yogurt, honey and olive oil, mix well. Apply mixture onto hair with your hands.

Comb through and pile hair loosely on top of head, cover with plastic cap and if you have a hood or bonnet hairdryer sit under it for 15-20 minutes or just wait and rinse out in an hour. Pat dry with your t-shirt.

Style and go. Repeat twice a month.

1. My eyelashes always fall off after 2-3 hour. How can I get them to stay on longer?Eye lashes can be tricky and there is nothing WORSE than your lashes lifting prematurely.

Eyelashes are attached with eyelash adhesive so, if your lashes are lifting after 3 hours, this could be one of the reasons why. Double check your adhesive packaging and make sure that you aren’t using adhesive past the recommended shelf life. This is not only hazardous to the eye area but, can also affect how long the lashes stay in place. Additionally, prior to application it is essential to allow your squeeze of adhesive to sit out for a while. The tackier the adhesive prior to application the longer your lashes will last. Lastly, if you’re an oily skin type your eyelids may be retaining oil. Making sure your eyelids are completely dry/matte before application will also help with a longer lasting lash life.

2. What is the best way to cover up a pimple or mark? We’ve all suffered with those pesky pimples and that hyper pigmentation too!!!

The best way to cover pimples/ pustules is to use either a highly pigmented foundation OR using a green camouflage corrector. A highly pigmented foundation will minimize the redness of the pustule if it’s a small one. The green camouflage will also neutralize the redness of the pustule and minimize the appearance as well. Dark marks and/or hyperpigmentation can be annoying just the same. Using an orange color corrector or even a red lipstick will minimize the appearance of dark marks as well.

If you are suffering with either of these two skin care issues I suggest contacting your local esthetician because makeup begins with the skin.

3. I have a round face. How can I get the illusion of high cheek bones?

Do you have a round face and want higher cheekbones? Well, today’s your lucky day!!! Here are some of my pro tricks on round facial shapes.

First, contour on the sides of your forehead and along your temples to make this ‘wider’ area appear more narrow. Then contour the area below your cheekbones (starting from your ears) to the middle of your cheeks, and then curve down to your jawline to lengthen your face. Round facial shapes often feel as though their face is fat but, it’s the most youthful of all facial shapes. Hopefully these tips will help you all achieve the bone structure you desire.

4. Is contouring still in? Contouring will never be out of style. Contouring is a makeup technique that uses cosmetics to define, enhance and sculpt the structure of the face or other body parts, such as breasts.

As long as Makeup wearers want to shape, define and slim their face/body contouring is here to stay.

5. How do I get a dewy look without looking oily? The ‘Dewy Skin’ look .... have you been trying to achieve the dewy look? The best way I give clients a dewy finish is by applying a finishing spray and adding highlighters to the face. Both of these together allow the makeup to set quicker in the skin and for it to appear dewy. Also when setting your makeup all over use a light weight setting powder. This is great for ‘normal’ skin types. However, if you’re an oily skin type there’s no need for a setting spray. In lieu of your skin over producing sebum, a setting spray may have you more oily than dewy at the end of the day.

QUIET… SILENCE IS NO LONGER GOLDEN! My platform message to our PAGE family is to deliver authentic human resource and teamwork advice. I promise to never disappoint! With that said, personal experience can be telling. In fact, I’ve learned different ways of addressing professional matters from former leadership. Over the years, many of those lessons learned were directly related to observing my former boss’s failures and some of their achievements. It’s like that famous quote, “Many times what we perceive as an error or failure is actually a gift.” If we carefully measure our perception with facts we find ourselves in a mirage of constant examination and perpetual learning while on the job. We look up to and toward our leader’s performances

and develop a roadmap for our own success in the workplace.

Regrettably, some of that leadership is skewed. We often find ourselves isolated, searching for truths and making the best ethical decisions on our own without the help of management.

Remember, not ever leader is a classic role model. Especially if they compromise your trust with a poor performance.

Let me share a real-life employment experienced that turned into a sexual harassment nightmare. I worked for a local government office in Georgia as an administrator. I met mainly women who had been around for less than 10 years and most had a much shorter tenure.

15 years on the job, some even approaching retirement. This place developed the reputation of having a figurative revolvingdoor. I wondered why. The most interesting fact about this group was their attempt to like one another. I agree this happens in most office settings (typical office politics). But this place had an unnatural aura, a disjointed feeling. One behavior I found symbolic to tradition: “Those in Charge Ruled.” And the male population were those who seemed to have ruled - or should I say – were more respected.

Observers often described the place as “Mayberry with no rules.”

There was truth to that expression.

So now you have a small canvas of the environment I work in for almost two years. And I want you

to know -- Every detail in this story is true. I just never reported it. I was advised to remain “Quiet.”

My job responsibilities were to provide admin support to a half dozen elected officials. The duties were not very complex, but the environment proved to have a dose of bullshit sprinkled in the mix making each day more unstable than the day before.

(Raise your hand if you’ve been there.)

From day one, I was uncomfortable but kept to myself and never shared any of the horrifying experiences with anyone. I was in a position to feel like an outsider; and I acted like one. My employment status was initially temporary.

And so, it ended that way.

(Smile). My offender seemed to be comfortable with my work schedule knowing this arrangement made me impermanent to the environment.

He felt comfortable coming on to me even after I made it crystal clear, “I’m not interested in you or that. Not At All.”

In fact, when I knew he was in the area I would tape a “Do Not Disturb” sign on the outside window of my office and close my door hoping he would be the first to see. But when you’re a prowler, nothing deters you from your prey. One day he came in and questioned me about the sign. I responded, “It means to leave me the HELL alone.”

You think he got the message?

All he did was laugh, walk away and continue to hassle me every given opportunity. He has a wife and a teenage daughter. What a role model he’ll turn out to be.

I hope somehow his lovely wife follows this platform; I’m sure she will agree. What gives men the right? What gives anyone the right to metaphorically undress themselves in front of you? He never had my permission he took it! I never gave him reason to think his behavior was tolerable.

My staying power was becoming extremely challenged. I looked for other work but as a student, I appreciated the flexibility of my schedule. This does not mean I tolerated unwanted sexual pursuits. Nor did I ever express vulnerability. I was severely disrespected, insulted and deliberately violated by an

That man committed a crime and I am his victim. And they told me to go away and be “Quiet?”

Most recently, he ran for a higher ranking position. Yes, still in Mayberry and he won. His fans don’t know he lacks integrity and decency yet he’s currently representing a respected community of citizens. From my vantage point they made the wrong choice at the ballot box.

But they probably don’t know what I know. In this case no one wins!

Of late, the countless stories of bravery expressed by men and women enduring incalculable sexual intimidation and harassment is horrific. I’m sure some experiences dig deeper than others. But the insight of all these misfortunes helped me make a powerful judgment call. Fuck the Non-disclosure Agreement.

In hindsight, I should have been more vocal about the abuse.

Instead, I was manipulated by fear of retaliation which in the end, occurred anyway. I often think of how many other women he victimized. Though my situation ended abruptly, I found peace in knowing I would never have to encounter his abuse again.

INGREDIENTS: 1 lb Butter 1 lb Brown sugar 1 lb confectioner sugar 1 tbsp Ground cinnamon 1 tsp Ground nutmeg 1 qt Vanilla ice cream, softened 1 Bottle of your favorite brown rum

INGREDIENTS: 1 oz. (2 tablespoons) bourbon 1 tablespoon mild honey 2 tsp fresh lemon juice ¼ cup of boiling water

DIRECTIONS: Melt butter in a sauce pan over medium heat.

Stir in brown sugar and confectioners' sugar.

Remove from heat, and whisk in the ice cream, nutmeg and cinnamon. Pour mixture into a plastic container, seal, and freeze.

Add 1 tablespoon of Hot Buttered Rum Batter and 1 oz. of Rum (I like more lol) to your favorite mug add boiling water. Stir and garnish with nutmeg. TIP: The batter is freezable so make it in advance and you can just add the boiling water and enjoy!
