Now that summer is here, did you meet your beach weather goals? Were you Now that summer is here, did you meet your beach weather goals? Were you able to lose that 15 pounds? Did you find the perfect swimsuit? Did you get the enviable beach hair highlights? Did you book the best vacation ever? Well I’m happy to report that I achieved three out of four of these goals this year. Losing the 15 pounds was not one of them! Some things on my list were easy and and some required months of planning. Losing 15 pounds was a lofty goal for me since I didn’t start until May. I am happy to say that I was able to lose at least 10 lbs. by walking 7.5 miles once per week and cutting back on fast food. The swimsuit situation was difficult, it always is. Somehow I managed to buy four swimsuits that actually fit but only after trying on almost 50 or 60. I literally went to 10 different stores but I can say that it was finally worth it. Armed with a tankini, maillot, a bikini and a rash guard, I was off to the best vacation ever! Where to.. you ask? See the travel section. This summer short haircuts rule. Confessions of a Product Junkie I’m not sure why I bought this or what it’s supposed to do. LOL, I think that the beauty consultant at my favorite Sephora told me that it would help to remove dull spots and brighten my complexion. The fragrance of the peel gel is pleasant and the packaging simple but appealing to the eye. I will admit that my face felt softer and smoother after using it, but that’s about it! The Verdict: I have faithfully used the product as directed; however, I believe that I could have achieved the same results for less than $34.00. Product Junkie strikes out again!

Celebrity makeup artist MiMi J tells us how to create your best brows and take care of your cosmetic tools.

Q: How frequently should I wash my makeup tools? Washing your makeup brushes is very important as it can help to prevent breakouts and the spreading of germs. I’d recommend a weekly wash if you wear makeup every day, but for those used less frequently, wash them at least once or twice a month.

The Beat Sheet Anastasia Beverly Hills DIPBROW Pomade Sephora.com

Q: What products should I use to create the illusion of full brows? Great brows are so important because they frame the face! If you’re looking to create beautiful, full brows, I love Anastasia Beverly Hills DIPBROW Pomade and Brow Wiz.

Anastasia Beverly Hills BROW Wiz

Q: What products can be used for hiding dark spots and circles? Orange correctors can be your best friend if you suffer from dark circles and spots. Orange helps to neutralize the blue/purple undertones in dark spots. Also, try one of the concealers I love, the Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer.

Beauty Director Genelle Rogerson recounts her life through the power of scent.

Perfume Memories When my brother and I were younger, we would visit my godmother during the summer months. We would get into all sorts of adventures! Though she only lived about 45 minutes away from our home in rural South Carolina, visiting her was always a delight. I remember that before we went out for the day, she would get ready in her bathroom and the very last thing she would put on before grabbing the car keys was a few spritzes of perfume. As I was young, I didn't know what perfume she was spraying, but it smelled ethereal. I would close my eyes and breathe in the earthy, yet

sweet fragrance as the aromatic particles wafted throughout the air. I hoped that if I stood by her, maybe I would smell like her too.

I feel Fantasy by Britney Spears like that scent belongs to in early high school, Ralph my godmother. When I Lauren Romance by the smell it, it reminds me of 12th grade, Vera Wang her. Maybe one day I'll Princess as a freshman in finally purchase a bottle college and Burberry Brit as for myself or maybe I'll just a senior. allow the scent’s memory to keep its power. But one I do have favorites which thing I do hope is that I'll include Acqua di Gioia find my own signature by Giorgio Armani, a scent, one that evokes fragrance I wore on memories of me to my my wedding day, and family and friends with most recently Cleopatra every spritz.

Summer Shimmer A bronzer and concealer combo is the best way to go when painting you face this season

During these humid summer months, I try not to wear tons of makeup. A great concealer and bronzer are perfect go-to alternative products that will give you flawless skin while you beat the heat. A little concealer under the eyes, using your ring finger or a concealer brush to apply, evens out your skin and gives you that 8 hours of good sleep look. Add some color with your favorite bronzer using a powder brush or blush brush. Sweep the color onto your temples, cheeks and jawline. Bronzers are great staples for any makeup bag, especially after those dull winter months. Be careful with bronzers that have too much shimmer, and be sure to pick a bronzer that is a little matte for a natural look. See some of my favorite products below.

Haute Looks Hair Stylist Evette Phelps updates us on the latest celeb inspired looks.

Wondering what the hottest hair trends are for summer 2016? Well, you can always count on Queen BeyoncÊ for inspiration when it comes to styles. Her long blonde braids are sure to stop traffic anywhere you go! This year is the year of the braid, from halo braids, goddess braids and the classic French braid, recently made famous by Mrs. Kim Kardashian West. Another great look for the summer seen on Mrs. West is the low pony with a middle part. This hair style is perfect for those summer date nights or a day out with the girls. It’s a classic look that anyone can achieve. Ciara is always ahead of the hair game. Long choppy bobs are in this year and you can rock it with or without a bang or keep it simple and part it down the middle. This hairstyle is another winner that I think is great for when you want to hang out with your friends during the day. If you want to switch it up, you could add a top knot with a fringe bang for the club. Any of these looks are sure to get heads turning all summer long! www.pagemagazine.info

GIRL BOSS Supermodel Iman has used both her beauty and brains to change the climate of fashion

The fashion industry is an ever-evolving world. One day, a model is in, and the next day, she can be out, regardless of how beautiful she is. This verifies that it’S more than a pretty face that has kept supermodel Iman at the forefront of style for nearly 40 years. The Somalian model was discovered in 1976, and since then, has upgraded the runways with an air of elegance that has not been replicated since her first show. Her glistening brown skin and long, graceful neck made her a favorite amongst designers, and although she is a premiere name in the business, this beauty mogul, who is the creator of Iman Cosmetics, has managed to keep a very low public profile.

Page Magazine Summer Issue 2016 photo from imancosmetics.com

Many may know her more as Mrs. David Bowie, but it would be a mistake to center her credentials around whom she married. No, Iman is much more than a celebrity wife. Before there was Naomi and Tyra, Iman was one of the first recognizable faces of color on the covers of international magazines, and since hanging up her heels, she has starred on both TV and the big screen. It is no secret the she is a sharp cookie, and has used her mind to steer her career in what can be a very vain and cold business. Yet somehow, she managed to do so in a couture gown with a flawlessly beat face. This is why Page recognizes the Iman as a fashion icon.

This is the time to relax by the pool with no worries of ruining your do. Are you having trouble deciding on which protective style to rock this summer? Don’t worry! French Braids

Remember those two French braids your mother used to do back in the day? Guess what, they have reemerged this season! French braids are a quick and easy style that takes less than 10 minutes to achieve. This style is very versatile. You can wear them casually or dress them up by wearing them in a simple bun. Celebrities like Rihanna, Zendaya and Kim Kardashian have slayed this style.

Crochet Braids

You can never go wrong with crochet braids whether its box braids. Whether done in a twist or curl style, this look never disappoints. Crochet braids are the trend this season because they’re so convenient. If you hate sitting for hours getting box braids or twists, then crochets are for you. Achieve this look by braiding your hair in a few cornrows and apply the pre-braided or twisted hair with a crochet hook.

Jumbo Cornrow

Jumbo cornrows are the new go to style for summer. This 90s inspired hairstyle has been seen on celebrities like Ciara, Jada Pinkett Smith and Brandy. Jumbo cornrows are great for vacations because there’s very little maintenance required.

How it works: Lactic acid is a great agent for removing spots and exfoliating your skin. It’s all-natural, so you don’t have to worry about residual damage to your skin.

Snips Are you ready to try something new with your hair this summer? Maybe even take that big step and get the ‘big chop’? Well, nothing says edgy and stylish like short hairdos and arched eyebrows. You can jazz up a cute fauxhawk by making it your own; adding a pop of color is always the way to go during the summer months whether it’s a hint of red or a few blonde highlights. Another short style that tends to be really popular is the pixie cut. It’s a short, simple and straight to the point hair style. If you have natural hair, a quick wash and go style with a low side part will do just the trick. You can add a red lip and hoop earrings to go along with that style and you can rock it during the day or at night. Another style that has made its way back on the scene is the ‘finger wave’. This is a style that many celebrities like Beyoncé and Teyana Taylor have rocked flawlessly! Short hair can be tricky but hopefully, with these tips, you can create a look that will blow everyone away all summer long!

All Eyez On

Annie Annie Ilonzeh talks about her role as Tupac’s fiancÊ in the anticipated biopic All Eyez on Me and her struggle to make it to the top as an actress. By Sherita Pryer 26

Page Magazine Summer Issue 2016

cting was never pinned on Annie Ilonzeh’s vision board as a career goal. Annie’s goals were to become a successful accountant and continue to playing sports. She stumbled into acting while visiting friends in Los Angeles during spring break. Annie’s first acting experience was in T.I. and Jamie Foxx “Live in the Sky”music video. After being introduced to the industry she was determined to make it her career. Her parents gave her one year to succeed as an actor in Los Angeles, and she later left college to embark on the new journey. “I remember director Chris Robinson asking me I’d ever done this [acting] before. My response was no and he suggested that I try it.” In addition to making appearances in music videos, Annie’s first big acting gig was starring in How I Met Your Mother on FOX. Annie’s only line was, “Hey Barney.” She later starred on the popular soap opera General Hospital and the Charlie’s Angels TV series.

simply said, “Don’t allow what other’s think stop what you think, go for it.” Annie states Harns went on by saying her strength is being powerful and suggested that she should embrace any weakness. Although it may seem like a simple piece of advice Annie cherishes Harns’ wisdom and selflessness. Annie’s advice to up and coming artists like herself is to never give up. She remembers her beginning stages and states that everyone goes through a rough season in their career. “There will be those times when you feel like giving up. Learn to take constructive criticism. You’re equipped with everything it takes to succeed.”

Annie’s career didn’t always go as planned. Like many others, Annie faced several obstacles. An issue that Annie discusses in particular is people’s assumption of her being easily cast because she has light skin and had ‘mixed hair’. “There were a lot of times that I wanted to go back home. I remember experiencing cyber bullying on social media because people didn’t think I represented black girls.” Annie commends leaders like Shonda Rhimes, Kerry Washington, and Viola Davis for acknowledging that women of color are the minority in Hollywood and creating a resolution. Earlier this year, it was revealed that Annie would be starring in the highly anticipated Tupac biopic All Eyez on Me as Tupac’s fiancé Kidada Jones. Annie describes the secretly kept role as being a tough process. The cast went through a series of transitions to make every piece of Tupac’s story fit perfectly. She relates to her character Kidada in many ways. Intrigued by Kidada and Tupac’s love story, Annie describes her character as being the ultimate protector, seeing past all of his flaws. “I’m a passionate person as well; when I’m in it no one’s going anywhere.” At a young age Annie was taught to be the protector of her four younger sisters. “My father is Nigerian and, in our culture, the oldest child serves as a protector of their younger siblings.” Annie said her glimpse into the life of Tupac was a whirlwind. She gained knowledge about the critically-acclaimed rapper by listening to stories shared by his friends and relatives on set. Her personal perception of Tupac has shifted since filming his biopic. The public stereotyped Tupac as an artist with a big personality that participated in thug activities. Annie now views Tupac Shakur as a loving, charming and passionate man. Her favorite Tupac songs are “All Eyez On Me” and “Dear Momma”. “Dear Momma makes me immediately text my mother every time I hear the song. It’s one of those songs you listen to and genuinely appreciate it.” In addition to preparing for the release of All Eyez On Me, Annie will make guest appearances this season on Empire. She will be playing the role of a journalist named Harper Scott who works closely with Luscious Lyon. Harper is trying to get the exclusive on Lucious Lyon’s past and does whatever it takes. Throughout Annie’s career she’s been given much advice from colleagues and mentors. The best advice she’s received this year was from Cinna Harns, one of the directors of Empire. While on set for her guest appearance, Annie says Harns pulled her aside and

Phone Hang-ups It’s time to put your cell down and talk about appropriate phone etiquette. By: Kelli J. Reid We’ve all been there. You’re enjoying a delectable dish while taking in the beautiful scenery of a restaurant. As you embrace your surrounding you notice more than half the people around you are glued to their phones. Perhaps their checking Facebook, Instagram, doing a Snapchat, or whatever else is out there that clearly didn’t exist in the ‘90s. How in the world did we survive? If you’ve been with your friends or on a date, more attention has probably been given to your phone than the actual outing. But is this wrong nowadays? Let’s go through our phone etiquette checklist and address what is good or bad phone behavior.

You’re out on a date and the guy’s phone is out on the table. Ok, this is definitely not the best sign. If the phone is on the table, it could mean whatever else is going on in his life is more important than you. Unless he mentioned something pressing at the onset of the date, when he received a text or call, or after he addresses the phone, he’s not being courteous or respectful. So this is not good.

Taking a plethora of pictures of the food or taking selfies throughout the entire date and posting them. Ladies, this is mainly on us. While this might be a fabulous restaurant, try using the utmost restraint in using social media. You may be a Yelping, Instagraming, Snapchating, Facebook groupie but perhaps you can go back to that same restaurant and record your entire dinner, chew by chew, with your girlfriends instead. Besides, can at least an hour or two of your entire life be unrecorded? Needless to say, posting during a date is rude, unless your date is also a poster. In that case the two of you are on the same page so post away!

Keeping your phone’s ringer on while you’re out. Some folks always keep their phone’s ringer on; however, we must be cognizant of our surroundings. The same courteously we give to others in a movie when we turn our phone’s ringer on vibrate is the same courtesy we should show our friends and dates. Notice how I also said friends. That’s being emphasized because we often times don’t give our friends the same level of attention we give our dates. Our friends were there before the dates and regardless of how close you are it’s still inconsiderate to constantly check the phone when in their presence without the proper disclaimers. Point blank, all parties should receive the same respect. So if your phone is constantly glued to your eyes or ears when you’re out my only question for you is “What makes your life so important that it can’t wait?” That was rhetorical of course. Ponder on that.

The New Mom’s Survival Guide Snap back after giving birth

Becoming a new mother is the most amazing moment you’ll ever experience. Nothing else in this world matters when you hold your baby for the first time. It’s the most exhilarating feeling! After you leave the hospital and settle in at home the induction period to parenthood begins. Seriously, sleep is the last thing on your agenda. Your precious little baby keeps you up until the wee hours of the morning and exhaustion hits you by noon. There are literally going to be times when eating and showering is overlooked. Sleep will become your number one priority. Don’t worry every mother has been through this hazing process sometime in their life, it will get better! We often let ourselves go after becoming a mother because our clothes don’t fit, stomach hasn’t slimmed down, we’re tired and overwhelmed. Don’t worry! Try these simple tips to embracing motherhood.

People are going to frequently visit the baby therefore your hygiene is important. The best time to take a bath is early in the morning or late at night. These times are great because the baby is usually sleeping. Treat yourself to a long shower, you’ll be relaxed mentally and physically. If the baby isn’t sleeping simply bring their bassinet in the bathroom with you. Relax yourself and the baby with soothing music.

Let’s be the first to admit that our pre-pregnancy clothes aren’t going to fit right away. Trying to get into those clothes will only depress you. Take advantage of the season you’re in, if it’s summer maxi dresses are perfect. Flowy dresses are always better! Maxi dresses sinuate your shape and hides your muffin top. If you’re in the fall or winter seasons take advantage of layering. An oversized boyfriend t-shirt with a cute scarf and some leggings is the perfect go to look for new moms. Get creative with the scarves by adding an extra pop of color to your attire. The key thing to remember after giving birth is feeling comfy at all times.

For the first few months doing your hair will be the last thing that comes to mind. Use this time to try out different protective styles that require little maintenance. Crochet braids, corn rows, box braids or sew ins are all perfect hairstyles that will keep you looking fabulous. Not a fan of protective styles? Try putting your hair up on a bun. Messy buns, extension buns, top knot buns are great hairstyles that give you an effortless look. Good Luck! (See next page for fitness tips to get your pre-baby body back)

Are you getting tired of your usual gym routine and looking for a way to mix it up? Here’s a list of popular fitness trends to try out.

Aerial Yoga: Aerial yoga is basically

a regular yoga class on another level (literally). You perform a series of exercises inspired by yoga, Pilates, calisthenics and aerial acrobatics in a hammock-like silk sling. Loved by celebrities such as Lena Dunham, Gwyneth Paltrow, Vanessa Hudgens, and Pretty Little Liars star Troian Bellisario, Aerial yoga might just be the full body workout you need to jumpstart your fitness.

Barre: Barre

is a killer full body workout, and has quickly become a national favorite. Typically, you start the class with a sequence of upper body workouts. These @Barre3 Instagram Feed exercises are done through small movements and focus on each individual muscle. Following the upper body work you move to the barre. While on the barre you utilize your own body weight and resistance to focus on your calves, thighs, and booty. Don’t be surprised if your legs start shaking uncontrollably, this is a good thing! Typically the class will end with some ab work and a variety of ballet stretches. Barre is great for any age and athletic ability and is definitely worth a try. Don’t forget to pick up a pair of grip socks before heading to your first class!

Pole Dancing: Pole dancing may

not be one of the first things that pop into your head when you hear ‘total body workout’, but maybe it should be. Not only will the classes burn calories crazy fast (up to 250 calories in one class!) and help you develop your balance, this workout trend will also help to build your confidence. Pole will help to build muscle tone and increase your flexibility. Grab your heels and find a studio near you to give this fitness craze a try!

2 Quick Beach Adventures! By LaRubia McDaniel

This summer I found myself with limited time for vacation, so I really needed to figure out how to maximize my beach time. Staying relatively close to home was definitely an option; a short six-hour drive was no problem. On one occasion when I found myself away on a business trip I still managed to hit the local beach for the weekend! Check out my 2 Quick Beach Adventures! When I think of Daytona Beach, college kids and NASCAR come to mind so I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered there was a vast mix of people there. Everyone from senior citizens to families were enjoying the surf. I stayed at the Daytona Beach Resort and Conference Center; it was ok, nothing like the 3/5 stars that www.tripadvisor.com gave it. It was clean although the rooms were a little outdated. I will say that the Tiki Bar was magnificent! Things to Do in Daytona At night the Dayton Beach Bandshell Concerts rule. If you like live music this is a winner. The beach crowd is awesome and friendly too. Check out the website for a schedule of bands. www.daytonabeachbiker.com/daytona_ bandshell_events_calendar.html

If you can tear yourself away from the beach go visit the Museum of Arts & Sciences. The museum holds a vast collection of eclectic art great for the whole family. www.moas.org/collections.html Places to Eat I wanted to get away from the regular fast food tourist eateries so the best way to do that is to ask the locals. Being a seafood lover I hit the jackpot with Our Deck Down Under in Port Orange (short drive from downtown Daytona) The food is great and you can’t beat the ocean view! www.ourdeckdu.com

I WAS A JERSEY GIRL FOR THE WEEKEND! Finding myself in NJ how could I avoid the infamous Jersey Shore! Northern Beaches are a little bit different, you are not going to see palm trees and the silt like sands but guess what? it is still the beach and I love it.

If you’re looking for a nice place to stay you can’t beat the Ocean Place Resort & Spa. Definitely 4-Star all the way with many amenities. Check it out at www.oceanplace.com

Since the fame of MTV the shore has beefed up its shopping and dinning experiences, so after laying out all day you can enjoy a nice meal and a bit of shopping.

I literally stuffed myself at Amy’s Omelette house. Everything on the menu looks good. I had the http://www.youramys.com BEST potato

Talent, Tenacity & Triumph Arrianne Keelen… The Makings Of A Star!

Arrianne Keelen has always been a star. The rest of the world just didn’t know it. Sure, she’s a working mother and devoted wife but she’s also a powerhouse vocalist, brilliant songwriter, Hurricane Katrina survivor and an inspiration. While she is identifiable with any woman who deferred her dreams to sacrifice for family, Arrianne is here to tell you that it is never too late. Arrianne held on to her faith, her gift, and her tenacity to become a finalist of the Amateur Night at the Apollo: Making a Star Competition, chosen during the 2016 Essence Music Festival. What Arrianne is not is an overnight success. She is the only daughter of a New Orleans pastor who sang her first solo at the age of four and directed the church choir at age 13. The multi-talented artist went on to star in Out of the Dark, a syndicated gospel music video show but it was the 1998 WYLD FM 98/AM 940 talent show in New Orleans, LA that proved to be her true launching pad. Here she mesmerized the audience and judges with her original, soul-penetrating composition, I Still Love You. This win landed her a spot as an amateur night contestant on It’s Showtime at the Apollo in Harlem, where she received a standing ovation and gave a ravishing encore performance. “That Girl Can Sang!” shouted Steve Harvey to the audience after hearing her voice. She appeared on BET as a finalist in the Gospel Dream Competition, became a finalist in the New Orleans Idol talent competition and won the Grand Prize in the Dream New Orleans Talent Search.

Page Magazine Summer Issue 2016

Since her debut, Arrianne has been the featured artist at events across the country such as the Full Gospel Baptist Conference, the NAACP Annual Convention, National Black MBA Conference and the Spirit of Greatness Awards Gala. She has been the opening act for many performers, including Susan Taylor, Les Brown, Carl Thomas, Debbie Winans, and Helen Baylor. She has also performed in the group SOUL, and as a background vocalist for noted artists Don Moen, BLESSED, Lisa McClendon, Cynthia Liggins-Thomas, Ted & Sherri, Karen Clark-Sheard, Dorinda Clark-Cole, Vanessa Bell Armstrong, among many others. Her album credits include vocal appearances on Lisa McClendon’s Live at the House of Blues album (Integrity), Miracles Do Happen by Stephanie Dotson (SONHO), Praise Life Beyond (EMI), and Praisin In New Orleans by Betty Winn & One-A-Chord. Arrianne is also no stranger to the stage. She demonstrated her gripping acting and vocal ability in the popular Triune Productions stage plays, Sistaz and When A Man Loves A Woman. Arrianne has also demonstrated her worldwide appeal by ministering before thousands in Spain and Barbados. She looks forward to releasing a compilation of her original songs to the world and bringing her specially wrapped message of encouragement and inspiration to the masses.
