Depot inducted into Iowa Rock ’n Roll Hall of Fame

Shenandoah’s Depot Restaurant and Lounge, a staple of the local music scene for more than four decades, has earned a place among Iowa’s most celebrated venues.

On Aug. 31, the Depot was officially inducted into the Iowa Rock ’n Roll Hall of Fame during ceremonies at Arnolds Park.

The honor is part of the Iowa Rock ’n Roll Music Association’s 2025 Hall of Fame class, which recognizes bands, venues, promoters, DJs, and others who have

shaped Iowa’s music culture.

This year’s celebration, held over Labor Day weekend, included concerts, youth talent showcases, and the induction ceremony.

For Depot owner Bill Hillman, the recognition is both humbling and gratifying.

“We’ve been doing live music here 42 years this year and everything from nationally known acts to regionally known acts,” Hillman said. “So, it’s quite an honor.”

The Depot has hosted thousands of musicians from across the country

and beyond, but Hillman points to one performance in particular that helped put the venue on the map: the Everly Brothers’ 1986 homecoming concert in Shenandoah.

“In 1984 the Everly Brothers got back together after a 10-year hiatus, so we went to work getting them here in Shenandoah,” Hillman recalled. “We spent a year-and-a-half planning it, and we ended up with 8,500 people, a parade, and even naming a street after them. That opened a lot of doors.” Since then, the Depot has

Area schools kick off positive start to 2025-2026 school year

The first week of school brought excitement, energy, and optimism to classrooms across the area as students settled into new routines and teachers welcomed them back.

At Shenandoah Elementary, Principal Jordan Newburg said, “The first week was a wonderful one! Getting to see our students back in the building smiling and learning was amazing. I look forward to another great year of watching our students grow academically and into great citizens of Shenandoah.”

In Shenandoah’s Middle School, Principal Luke Buttry shared a similar sense of enthusiasm. “The school year is off to a great start. Our staff is extremely excited to have students back

in the building. Students have lots of positive energy and everyone is excited for the learning and growth that will take place this year. We are focused on developing responsible, respectful and resilient learners this school year.”

In Clarinda, Elementary Principal Lesley Ehlers reported a smooth beginning. “Our school year at Clarinda Elementary is off to a fantastic start. Students are settling into routines and diving into learning with great enthusiasm. I'm so proud of our staff, students, and families for working together to make the first week a success!”

At Essex Community School, Principal Vicki Hume said the first week was filled with “positive energy

Noah's Ark cuts ribbon for new playground

The Clarinda Chamber of Commerce and Clarinda Ambassadors were excited to celebrate the new playground at St. John Noah’s Ark Christian Child Care Center on Thursday, Aug. 28.

These types of play structures encourage cooperation, bring out imagination, role-playing, and leadership. The new playground fosters physical movement, independent thinking, and promotes social interaction and development.

welcomed a wide range of acts, from blues and rock to Americana. Hillman, himself inducted into the Hall of Fame as a promoter in 2021, said this year’s honor is just as meaningful because it recognizes not only him, but also the many employees and supporters who have made live music at the Depot possible.

“I appreciate all the hard work that the employees have had here,” Hillman said. “It’s a real honor to be chosen for something like this.” Hillman also takes pride in giving younger musicians a stage.

Depot owner Bill Hillman praised Davis’ accomplishment, saying, “Jack was great. He wasn’t nervous at all. He does really good work.”

Davis has been a familiar face in Shenandoah, most recently performing on Aug. 28 at the Depot. Hillman said celebrating young performers like Davis is one of the things that keeps the venue’s music scene vibrant after 42 years.

“We’ve had more than a hundred—maybe hundreds—of kids who started out playing their first shows at the Depot,” he said.

“That’s my favorite part, seeing them get that chance.”

The 2025 induction class included more than two

dozen musicians, bands, and venues from across Iowa.

The Depot joins the Ollinger Ballroom in Pocahontas as one of two venues inducted this year, further cementing its reputation as one of the state’s premier music destinations.

“It’s special because it means the community has been part of it too,” Hillman said. “Shenandoah has supported live music here for 42 years, and I hope it keeps going.”

Lunchtime was a highlight for Clarinda Elementary students as friends gathered to eat together in the cafeteria.
