QUILTS OF VALOR PRESENTED
Kenneth Meyers of Clarinda
Kenneth Meyers of Clarinda, Iowa, was honored with a Quilt of Valor, Sunday, April 6.
Meyers served in the United States Army (including activated Army National Guard/Reservists), and The United States Marine Corps. He served in the Persian Gulf War (1990 until 1991) and then Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) from 2001 until 2014.
Meyers was stationed in Camp Pendleton, Camp LeJune, Greenburg, Wisconsin; also on ship for two Westbacks, Korea, Philippines, Guam, and Thai. Meyers was in the 168th
Infantry Bravo Company, Charlie 1-11 and Charlie 1-9.
In attendance to honor Meyers were his wife Audra, and daughter Shelby and husband Joseph and family. At the time of his discharge from the service, Meyers had achieved the ranking of E-5.
In attendance to award this Quilt of Valor were Brenda Franks, Carol York, and Becky Streitenberger.
Denise Bryant, from Page County Veterans Affairs, was there to award Meyers with a Certificate of Appreciation for his military service.
Marvin Wickersham of Essex
Marvin Wickersham received his Quilt of Valor at his home in Essex, Iowa, on Saturday, April 5.
Wickersham served in the Army National Guard for one year and four months. He also served in the United States Navy from Jan. 25, 1955 until Sept. 13, 1961; and held a rank of 2nd Class upon leaving the service.
Wickersham was stationed on the East Coast and in Europe. He was stationed on the
USS Intrepid Aircraft Carrier which is docked on the river in New York City, and still in use today.
In attendance to honor Wickersham was his wife Dorothy, and to award the quilt were Peg Franks, Carol York, Brenda Franks, and Becky Streitenberger.
Also in attendance was Denise Bryant from the Page County Veterans Affairs to award Wickersham with a Certificate of Appreciation for his service.
Donald Driskell of Farragut
Donald Eugene Driskell, of Farragut, Iowa, was awarded a Quilt of Valor at the Page County Veterans Affairs Office in Shenandoah, Iowa, on Tuesday, April 8.
Driskell served in the United States Army from July 1970 until Feb. 1972.
Driskell first went to Omaha, Nebraska, then to Fort Dix, New Jersey. His last duty assignment was 3/17 Artillery Service, BTRY USAREUR.
He was awarded a National Defense Medal and a Sharp-
shooter Medal for an M16.
Upon leving the military, Donald held the rank of E-3. His wife Tammy was in attendance to share in his award.
In attendance to award this Quilt of Valor were Brenda Franks, Carol York, and Becky Streitenberger.
Denise Bryant, from the Page County Veterans Affairs was there to award Donald with a Certificate of Appreciation for his service and a book on Vietnam.

The 11th Annual Cruzin’ Clarinda is Saturday, June 7, bringing classic cars and music to Clarinda’s historic downtown square. The first 220 vehicles will receive a complimentary event dash plaque. Vehicle enthusiasts travel from across Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri, and Kansas to attend. A unique aspect of Cruzin’ Clarinda is that it welcomes all motorized vehicles, including cars, pickup trucks, motorcycles, and tractors.
Free vehicle registration is from 8 to 11 a.m., followed by the Show & Shine and judging from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The day wraps up with an awards ceremony and 50/50 raffle announcement at 2 p.m. In addition to the vehicles on display, vendors will be set up around the courthouse area, providing marketing opportunities for local businesses and featuring a variety of merchandise and food options. Disability Awareness Walk seeks walkers and volunteers
Shenandoah Chamber & Industry Association (SCIA) along with Nishna Productions, Inc. and the Depot Restaurant are organizing the 10th annual Disability Awareness Walk in Shenandoah, Saturday, May 3.
This year the one-mile route is through Shenandoah’s downtown streetscape and around Priest Park. Participants are encouraged to register by filling out an entry form with a signed waiver.
Forms are available at SCIA, NPI, and the Depot Restaurant as well as at www.sciaiowa.com.
Other sponsors for the event are El Porton Mexican Grill, Fareway, First Heritage Bank, National Alliance on Mental Illness, Hy-Vee and St. Mary’s Shenandoah.
More sponsors are welcome to contribute. Contact SCIA to contribute monetary donations or in-kind contributions.
The items needed are bottled water and inexpensive items or gift cards for the door prize drawings.
The free walk, starting at 11 a.m., is for all ages and all abilities and is open to the public.
This regional event begins at the Depot Deli 101 Railroad St. Walkers will travel
east on Sheridan Avenue to Sycamore St. and back west on the southside of Sheridan Ave. to Blossom St., heading south behind the Public Library to 5th Ave. and south again on Elm St. to Priest Park. Water will be available at the park. The walkers will travel around the park and head back north on Maple St. to complete the one-mile course back on Sheridan Avenue to the Depot Deli finish. The route can accommodate wheelchairs.
Volunteers will be needed for walker assistance and to act as crossing guards. Reflective vests will be provided for street crossing guards. Volunteers are also needed to help with set-up, to pass out water at the half-way point and food service & prizes at the after party.
“This year is the 10th anniversary of the Disability Awareness Walk, and each year it has grown. It has been such a blessing to see our residents connect with walking buddies and start forming friendships. This year, we hope to see even more community members join us in the walk and in the celebration of all the individuals who will be walking with us,” said NPI Development Specialist Emily Martin. This year participants
walking or riding will receive colorful logo sunglasses at the start. The after party under the big yellow tent at the Depot will feature a free hot dog lunch, root beer floats and music by Jeff Slater. There will also be drawings for door prizes from area businesses.
Jeff Slater has been entertaining area music lovers in the vicinity for over 15 years with his wit, storytelling and musical talents. Jeff has been an active community volunteer and supporter of Southwest Iowa projects including the Wabash Trace, and the music scene. Jeff lives south of Shenandoah with his wife Ann, daughter Sofia, and Lucy the wonder dog.
“Everyone from the surrounding area is welcome to participate in this special event,” said SCIA Marketing Director Shelly Warner. “It’s a fun, rewarding event with old and new friends, music, and exercise.”

DONUT STOP RIBBON CUTTING
The Shenandoah Chamber & Industry Association (SCIA) welcomed the new owners of a much-loved local business with a ribbon cutting on April 9. Todd and Stacy Kirk, the new owners of Donut Stop, were joined by customers, community members, and SCIA representatives to celebrate the sweet occasion. Located at 606 W. Sheridan Avenue, Donut Stop has been a local favorite since the 1970s. The Kirks officially took over and opened for business Jan. 23, bringing fresh energy and a personal touch. “We were really so grateful for the support,” said Stacy Kirk. “Things are going good.
