An introduction to The Page County Post

Welcome to Week 1 of The Page County Post.

“What is The Page County Post,” you’re sure to ask? Well, you’re looking at it.

The Page County Post is a freedistribution publication, delivered to every home in Page County, every Tuesday. Well, that’s not entirely true.

There are 52 weeks in a year and plans are to publish the PC Post 48 times in a 12-month span. How will we determine which weeks we publish and which ones we don’t? Great question.

Here’s the answer: If a month has five weeks — no PC Post.

It’s that simple. Why only 48 weeks?

Because I’ve been doing this for a very long time and this old man needs some time off every once in a while.

Yeah, but four weeks a year?

Well, those weeks won’t entirely be “off.” There won’t be a paper on those weeks, but there will still be plenty of “housekeeping” to do.

And, yes, I do plan to actually take time off, as well.

My wife, Chaundee, (who I hope many of you who haven’t already, will soon have the opportunity to meet), and I like to travel. I’m sure there will be many more column

inches devoted to that topic over the next several weeks — hopefully months — hopefully years — hopefully … well, I’ll stop well short of saying decades. I’ll turn 56 in a couple of months and it would be nice if I could turn this or whatever “this” evolves into in the next 10 years, over to someone younger.

Just so everyone knows well ahead of time, the weeks we won’t have a paper in 2025 are these: April 29, July 29, Sept. 30, and Dec. 30. Please plan accordingly. Don’t worry, there will be plenty of reminders.

********

I have to take some space right here and say “Thank You!”

If you take a good look at this week’s inaugural issue, it won’t take you long to figure out who deserves the biggest thanks.

Here you have some guy that, let’s face it, not very many people in Page County know.

Yet, the advertisers who appear on the pages of this publication have taken a chance on — invested in — the hope that this publication can be what they imagine it can be. What is that exactly?

Well, you would have to ask those advertisers to be sure, and I encourage you to do so, but from where I sit, I simply expect this paper to serve as a hub where local businesses and organizations can deliver their advertising messages

to potential customers, potential employees, potential partipants, potential donors, potential … you name it, in a cost-efficient way. That’s not all. There are two sides to this. My expectations also include for this paper to be a goto resource for readers to find the goods and services they are looking for, and hopefully even ones that they didn’t know they were looking for — surely the true test of the effectiveness of advertising in The Page County Post. I suppose I should devote some space to telling those of you who have no idea who I am … who I am.

SCIA announces 2025 Chocolate Walk Winners

The Shenandoah Chamber & Industry Association 2025 Chocolate Walk wrapped up a sweet weekend Saturday February 8th before Valentines Day. Everyone had a chance to

indulge in chocolate, win prizes, and create new memories while shopping with friends and family. The Depot hosted the Chocolate Walk drawing party with wine tasting and free appe-

tizers.

Sponsoring businesses had stunning Valentine displays that were upbeat and festive. Customers sampled chocolate in stores as they shopped and picked up en-

try forms for the drawings. Each business also provided gifts for the drawings. Prizes were won at the after party by locals and out-oftime visitors. “We have a list of winners from towns in our area with Shenandoah, Red Oak, and Essex,” said SCIA intern Trent Finnegan. “There were also a few from the Des Moines metro area from Ankeny, Johnston, and Grimes. We want to thank Amy Zwickel, Dr. Margaret Brady, Liz Skillern, and Miss Shenandoah Ali Hansen for handing out and drawing 38 prizes. You might be wondering why on Earth, someone in the year 2025 would start a print publicaton.

That is a very good question, but I think I have the answer, actually, I believe I have multiple answers.

Personally, this is what I know how to do, and I think over a lifetime of being in and around the print media business and more than 30 years of full-time experience working in newspapers and shoppers and every department of multiple print operations, I’ve gotten at least decent at it.

But it’s not only that.

I truly believe that there is a place for this type of publication.

I think advertisers want another consistent and affordable way to reach out to their potential clients and I

believe readers desire a way to find out what is going on and what is available close to where they live without having to sift through the endless distractions of social media.

Not that social media is a bad place to be, necessarily, we plan to use it, too.

If you haven’t already, please follow our Facebook and Instagram pages @ PageCountyPost.

We plan to share what others are doing, as well as, inform our readers about what we are doing.

The hope is that a digital version of The Page County Post will appear there, as well.

I don’t know if I’ll write something like this every week, but if have something to share, you’ll likely be able to read about it here.
