Sammy Hankins of Glenwood
Sammy R. Hankins of Glenwood was awarded a Quilt of Valor Thursday, Sept. 18, at his brother-inlaws home in Shenandoah.
Hankins served in the United States Army during
the Vietnam era. He served in Heilbronn, Germany, in the Pershing Missile Weapons Systems, 56th Field Artillery Brigade, 7th Army; stationed in Europe.
Upon leaving the service in November of 1971
Hankins held the rank of Specialist 4. In attendance to honor Sammy were his wife Janet Johnson, brother-in-law
Richard Thompson, and wife Joy.
To award the quilt were Brenda Franks and Denise Bryant.
Bryant is with the Page County Veterans Affairs and was in attendance to award Hankins with a Certificate of Appreciation for his service, along with a book about Vietnam.

Shenandoah’s Adopt-A-Family program brings holiday joy to local families

As the holiday season nears, Shenandoah is once again rallying behind one of its most cherished traditions — the Adopt-A-Family program.

Since 1992, the effort has brought holiday joy to hundreds of local families by matching those in need with generous community members.
Now in its 33rd year, the program is coordinated by
volunteer Taylor Goetz, who credits its success to the community’s compassion.
“The program began when Pat Perkins at Nishna Productions wanted to help local families in need,” Goetz said. “Her idea was simple — match families with people who have a little extra to give.”
What began with 13 families has grown dramatically.
Last year, over 60 families and 175 children were matched with adopters.
Families are referred through schools and local agencies, and each is assigned a number to protect privacy.
Adopters — individuals, businesses, and organizations — receive a wish list of clothing sizes, winter gear, and a few special gifts. “We focus on helping the children now, which allows us to reach more families,” Goetz noted.
For Goetz, the joy on parents’ faces at pickup time is the most rewarding part.
“It’s amazing to see how much this means to them,” she said.
The community’s generosity keeps the program going strong.
“We’ve never had to fundraise — Shenandoah always comes through,” Goetz said. Extra funds often go toward grocery gift cards for families.

Shenandoah’s annual ShenFest brought the community together Sept. 27 with a full day of activities, food, and fun.
The festival featured longtime traditions like the Fireman’s Pancake Feed, farmers market, and parade, alongside newer attractions such as a softball tournament and Barre in the Park.
Families enjoyed bounce houses, games, live music, and downtown shopping, while KMA marked its 100th anniversary with building tours and free Falk’s Sisters Lemon Custard Ice Cream.
From tractors to classic cars, fun runs to pageants, ShenFest once again showcased the energy and pride of Shenandoah.
SHENANDOAH CLASS OF 2004
Celebrating its 21st reunion, the Shenandoah High School Class of 2004 met at Matt’s Attic during ShenFest weekend. Fifteen classmates attended, traveling from Utah, Lincoln, Des Moines, West Branch, Omaha, and Council Bluffs.
