LANDSCAPE CONCEPTS Vehicular Drop-Off

Plaza Courtyard

Palm trees are grouped in groves of 2-3-5 to frame the architecture. The fountain if located at this area should be placed where it can be interactive and not as an element to look at like the classic “storefront window” display. Pretty but no substance.

The fountain could be meandering similar in shape to our previous bioretention area but working its way inward towards the plaza and not so much hugging the vehicular drop-off. Taking the shape of an abstract creekbed that has eroded a beautiful shape down into the earth. Sometimes narrow and sometimes wide were it pools and people can play. Another idea is a trough. We show images were it’s in the form of an arc, but it could be linear were it originates in the plaza and termintates at a prominent location near the front entry/drop-off. This by nature would be less interactive than the stream concept, but would possibly recall “farm” imagery.

We have always been inspired by the existing pattern created by DWP. We feel it is a good a pattern as any. The shapes will need massaging depending upon whether or not the plaza fountain ends up being located here and whether or not the “amphitheater” stairs surround the space and thereby reduce the size of the plaza. The stairs have potential to provide the informal seating areas for everyday use, particularly at lunch times, but also for special events. The grade changes the stair concept creates assists in grading and drainage and stormwater management. We also feel that there still should be some portion of the plaza that is dedicated to stormwater management and we have considered the possibility of depressing all or most non paving surfaces for that purpose. Whereas in all previous concepts the areas were convex (berms).

The plaza fountain would be most likely to be interactive of all three locations, the (1) boring drop-off turn-around circular fountain, the (2) meandering stream and the (3) trough fountain or the (4) grid of fountain plaza jets.

Green Roof The green roof for purely utilitarian purposes will need some type of walkway system for access and maintenace. In doing so, it will empose a pattern upon the roof and we prefer the pattern be meandering vs. lineal. The pattern will have to work with the dimensions of the modular unit of the green roof such as “Green Grid” or another company. We will let the planting spill over the path disrupting “pixel affect of modular stystems and straight paths. The pre-planted modular trays come in Ultra Extensive 2.5” deep trays, Extensive 4” deep trays, and Intensive 8” deep trays. At the top of the roof where it’s flat we will design larger gathering spaces where people will collect and enjoy the best view(s).

Perimeter Landscape Along the perimeter of the building is an opportunity to showcase an abstract“farm fence” surrounding the building. It encloses and also creates a backdrop for the building. Functionally it can screen unwanted views and provide assistance in the sports court area keeping balls in bounds. Trees need to be strategically located to frame views both into and out from the building. They need to provide shelter from the prevailing winds and the west setting sun.
