2021 ANNUAL REPORT

Letter from the CEO We must do everything in our power to end domestic violence! As the new CEO of Partnership Against Domestic Violence, I am proud to have worked alongside our previous CEO, Nancy Friauf, for 6 years. Throughout my career, I have focused on ways to help survivors heal and build shelter for those fleeing domestic violence. As PADV moves into this new chapter, the way in which we educate the community, our visibility and our mission will change. Our vision has always been to have a community free of domestic violence, so the work we do reflects that. Over the past year, we realized that our mission does not match this powerful work that we are doing. As many of you know, the current mission of PADV is to end the crime of intimate partner violence and empower its survivors. We have come to realize that this mission can sometimes confuse people. Causing some to think that domestic violence only happens between couples.

Katha D. Blackwell, LMSW Chief Executive Officer

Intimate Partner violence focuses on couples, but our work goes beyond that type of violence. We also focus on family violence, dating violence, and abuse in later life. Domestic Violence comes to steal, kill and destroy families and relationships. We must continue to expand our message and educate as many people as we can about domestic violence, in every form. Domestic Violence is an issue that tears apart families and terrorizes children. As you read through our annual report, you will see that the largest number of people impacted by domestic violence are children. Innocent children who just so happen to be in the crossfires of violence. When I see the children residing in our shelters, it is heartbreaking to think that anyone would cause these children any harm. To truly make an impact against domestic violence, we must ask ourselves some questions: • Is my home a home of peace? • Are the people in my life afraid of me? • Am I bringing love or fear into my relationships? These are the types of questions we all must ask ourselves if we truly want domestic violence to end. It starts with us. It starts with how we value life and how we value the lives of those we claim to love. All of us can choose between loving someone or hating someone through our actions. I encourage you to love the people in your life, choose peace, kindness and acts of love at all times. We cannot do this work without our staff, donors, board members, volunteers and community partners. This year we will be launching our legacy campaign allowing those of you who wish to leave a legacy to do so. I look forward to working alongside all of you with the belief that our work is not in vain. We will see this atrocious crime come to an end. May God bless the survivors of domestic violence and all of you who are walking alongside them.

HEARTS WITH HOPE GALA 9.18.2021

HAPPY HOUR FOR HOPE 5.20.2021

At our Annual Hearts with Hope Gala we celebrate the triumphs of our clients, and show deep gratitude to our dearest supporters who are a critical part of our mission; to ending the crime of intimate partner violence and empowering its survivors. Although the world seems to change by the minute, our commitment to providing professional, compassionate, and empowering support to victims of intimate partner violence and their children is unwavering and our supporters agreed. We held our 33rd annual on September 18th, 2021 at the beautiful InterContinteal Atlanta. This memorable night featured a robust silent and live auction and live musical entertainment. The most impactful part of the evening was the powerful testimony from our Purple Heart recipient Eboney Gill, where she shared “I felt like I was in jail. PADV gave me my freedom and my life.” Thank you to Northside Hospital, our Presenting Sponsor, and all our other generous sponsors and donors.

In 2021 we brought to life a new event, Happy Hour for Hope. Held on May 20th at New Realm Brewing Happy Hour for Hope provided an amazing opportunity to wind down and connect with individuals ready to make a difference in our community. From young professionals just starting to navigate the charitable giving path to longtime supporters, we welcomed all who had a passion for PADV’s mission.

10TH ANNUAL CANDLELIGHT VIGIL OCTOBER 2021 Every October, PADV hosts a Candlelight Vigil to honor and remember Georgians who have lost their lives due to domestic violence. First observed in October 1981 as a national “Day of Unity,” Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) is held in October to unite advocates across the nation in their efforts to end domestic violence. On October 14th we gathered to light a candle for nearly 100 Georgian lives lost in 2021. Our friends at the Gwinnett County District Attorney Office and the Fulton County District Attorney Office helped us remember the lives by sharing personal stories of why ending domestic violence is so important.

TEE UP TO END DOMESTIC VIOLENCE 6.11.2021 On June 11th PADV hosted our first annual Tee Up to End Domestic Violence Golf Tournament. Hosted at Bear’s Best over 85 golfers attended the 18-hole scramble format tournament with Beginner’s Clinic that designed to provide new golfers or golfers that have not played in a while with the basic needed to get started playing the game of golf. We topped of the day with a lunch buffet, award ceremony and hearing impactful stories about how PADV continues to fight to end intimate partner violence. 4

A Survivor’s Story “My name is Lynelle and I am a survivor of Domestic Abuse. I don’t think I have said that before. It was early 2016 when I reconnected with who would later become my abuser. We were introduced by a family member many years prior and our relationship started much like a love story out of a novel. We would talk for hours, we would share common stories we made each other laugh. He was so charming and attentive. He made me feel like the most beautiful women in the world. I felt cherished and loved. When the domestic abuse began it was mostly mental and psychological, he wanted me to answer the phone on time and if I did not he would become angry. I would stop talking to him and he would tell me he did that because he loves me and just wanted to make sure I was safe. His expectations were somewhat ridiculous. I would feel guilty and tell myself maybe he does love me and just wants the best for me. The emotional and psychological abuse went on for a while but at the time I did not recognize that as abuse. When I finally came to the United States and we got married, it seemed like someone just flipped the light switch and everything became so dark. He started to abuse me physically and financially. I started to see in him a person I never knew. The physical abuse got worse every time and I felt like at that time if I did not leave something terrible would happen. I was so afraid of him that I would just go numb every time he abused me. He made me feel less than and so I started to think that was who I was. He broke my spirit; he broke my heart and broke my dignity. In 2021 I finally found the strength to leave him. I was so afraid because I had no idea where I was going until a friend suggested I call PADV. I was reluctant at first because my abuser always told me that nobody would help because I was an immigrant. While I was in shelter, I never felt so grateful and free. PADV gave me back my self-worth, confidence and most importantly the courage to fight for myself. The advocates at PADV showed me so much care and it inspired me to grow each day. They helped encourage me to reclaim my life. Today I have a part time job while actively pursuing new fulltime opportunities. I am working on getting a home of my own and I have started my own business making jewelry. I am currently attending counselling that PADV has provided for me and I am healing every day. Today I am stronger, more confident, and brave and I love myself more. My advice to women out there going through abuse, please choose Life, choose you.”

Programs & Services PADV implements a holistic approach to ending intimate partner violence which not only supports survivors once abuse has occurred but also strives to prevent future violence. We do this by offering the following array of programs and services:

Emergency Safe Houses PADV operates two emergency safe houses, one in Fulton County and the other in Gwinnett County. During their stay, clients receive assistance with clothing, food, transportation, childcare, referrals for housing and job opportunities.

24-Hour Crisis Line The crisis line is sometimes the only link to safety available for battered women and their children. PADV’s crisis lines provide safety planning, information and support to callers in immediate danger and to those with questions about others who may be battered. Our crisis line also offers referrals to community resources available throughout the state of Georgia.

Legal Advocacy PADV’s legal advocacy services include preparing temporary protection orders, assisting clients in completing necessary paperwork and advocating for the domestic violence survivor in the intimidating and complex judicial system.

Outreach & Prevention Programs Education is the key to ending domestic violence so PADV strives to inform our community on its dynamics and prevention measures. Our four outreach focus areas are domestic violence in the workplace, teen dating violence, Latino communities and faith-based organizations. Click here to learn more about our educational workshops.

Supportive Housing Program PADV’s Supportive Housing Program is designed to assist battered women in their efforts to gain independence from their abusers. More specifically, the program offers rental, utility, childcare, employment, legal, educational and financial assistance in addition to housing.

Support Groups for Women PADV’s support groups aid women who have left violent relationships or continue to live with their abuser. These groups provide a safe place for survivors to come together and share experiences, offer encouragement, support and generate ideas on ways to live violence free.

Letter from the Chairman In the poem “The Hill We Climb”, Amanda Gorman stated so eloquently “For there is always light, if only we’re brave enough to see it, if only we’re brave enough to be it. In the midst of a pandemic and times of social injustice, Partnership Against Domestic Violence (PADV) has remained a light in the community due to the steadfast generosity of its donors and volunteers. This support gives hope for survivors to rebuild their lives.

Tameeka Law Walker, MD, MSCR Board Chair Georgia Perinatal Consultants

To broaden our reach in the community, we hosted our inaugural Tee Up to End Domestic Violence Golf Tournament which was executed by our Gwinnett Shelter Fund Development Committee in June 2021. Despite the challenges of this past year, we were able to come together for our annual Hearts with Hope Gala. Because of your generosity, commitment and determination, the organization raise over $400,000. Dr. Yamma Brown chaired this in-person event which revealed the unrelenting support of our donors. As we celebrate triumphs let us not forget our work is not yet done. We appreciate the support from our local communities where are shelters are located. Madam Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis and Madam Gwinnet County District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson, attended our Candlelight Vigil during Domestic Violence Awareness month in October. Both of them shared personal stories and made a charge to continue the work required to give hope for survivors like Victoria Crawford. Victoria attends college and works while providing for her 3 children. Her mission is now to pay forward the help she received to create a better future for survivors of domestic violence and be a positive change in the lives of others. Security, safety, courage, healing, and new beginnings are what the organization provides to meet the needs of the survivors of domestic violence. This would not happen without your help. Through donor and volunteer support, survivors will be empowered and prepared to live in a diverse community and thrive in the face of opposition. On behalf of the Board of Directors of PADV, I give my sincerest regards and appreciation for your support to this organization.

Sincerely, Tameeka Law Walker, MD
