Clackamas County Vector Control District (CCVCD) is responsible for the control of flying vectors in Clackamas County. We work to control mosquitoes and fly populations, stop the spread vector-borne diseases, and help you spend more time outside and buzz free in beautiful Clackamas County!

What’s A Vector?

Vectors are mosquitoes, flies, or other animals or insects capable of transmitting pathogens that cause disease in humans or animals.

Vector control is the process of actively reducing the number of vectors in Clackamas County. Comprehensive vector control can use one or more approaches that target different environments and life stages of vectors.

Mosquito Life Cycles Eggs - Mosquitoes lay eggs one at a time on damp soil that attach together to form floating egg rafts. Eggs typically hatch into mosquitoes within 48 hours.

Larva - Mosquito larvae live in water and feed on microorganisms and organic matter in the water. Larvae shed their skin four times, growing bigger each time. During the fourth molt, larvae become pupa.

Pupa - The pupa move and breathe through two tubes on their back. After two days, or when the mosquito is fully developed, the pupal skin is shed, and an adult mosquito emerges.

Adult Mosquito - The adult must wait a short time to allow its wings to spread and dry out properly before it is able to fly. Blood feeding and mating do not occur until after a few days have passed. How long each stage lasts are dependent on temperature and species of mosquito. Mosquitoes cannot function when it is less than 50 degrees.

Vector Facts

Fly Life Cycles Eggs - Female flies lay an estimated five to six batches of 75 to 150 eggs in their lifetime.

Larva - Fly larvae grow in three stages where they develop rapidly and molt. Following the third molt, the larvae will darken and harden and enter the pupa stage.

Pupa - Inside the protective pupa shell, the larva will fully develop body segments and the appendages of an adult fly. This stage takes 3 to 6 days in warm conditions but can take 17 to 27 days in colder environments.

Adult Fly - An adult flies average lifespan is 21 days. However, within 2 to 3 days, female flies are capable of reproduction. Adult houseflies have distinct black stripes on their thorax, red eyes and a gray or yellow abdomen.

Reduce Flies Around Your Home 1. Fly traps are an easy and environmentally friendly way to control flies around your home.

2. Flies lay their eggs around garbage, food waste, and feces. Remember to keep your yard clean so flies don’t have places to feed or reproduce. If you have a compost pile in your yard, boiling water will kill flies and their larvae.

3. Replacing window screens with holes is an effective way to keep flies and mosquitoes out.

Reduce Flies Around Your Home 1. Avoid peak mosquito hours; stay inside or in screened areas during sunrise, sunset, and the early evening.

2. Remove mosquito breeding areas in your yard. Mosquitoes need water to breed.

3. Consider close-toes shoes and loose clothing. Mosquitoes often fly lower to the ground and cannot penetrate thicker fabrics.

4. Sweet smelling soaps, shampoos,or lotions tend to attract mosquitoes since they prefer to feed on flower nectar when not reproducing, try to avoid these during mosquito season.

Mosquito-Borne Diseases There are many different mosquito-borne diseases affecting humans: West Nile virus, Encephalitis, Malaria, Chikungunya, and Zika are some of the most well-known.

Several of the 48 known species of mosquitoes in Oregon can carry diseases under the right conditions. When a female mosquito feeds on blood, it may transmit certain diseasecausing pathogens to humans or animals. Fly-Borne Diseases The World Health Organization estimates that house flies are responsible for transmitting at least 65 different diseases such as cholera, conjunctivitis, dysentery, and typhoid fever. While flies are not biting vectors, they transmit pathogens from feeding on waste and accumulating disease causing pathogens in their digestive systems.

Mosquito Facts 1. More deaths are attributed to mosquitoes than any other animal or insect on earth due to the large number of disease they carry.

2. Not all mosquito species feed on just humans. Culiseta melanura feed almost exclusively on birds and Uranotaenia sapphirine mosquitoes are known to feed on reptiles and amphibians.

3. Mosquitoes average a flight speed of 1 to 1.5 miles per hour, much slower than butterflies or honeybees.

Fly Facts 1. Flies regurgitate digestive fluids onto solid foods, so they can use their proboscis to drink their meals.

2. Flies can walk upside down because of their foot pads (pulvilli) which have tiny hairs on them that produce a substance made of sugars and oils which helps them stick.

3. Flies have compound eyes which means they can see in a nearly 360-degree field of vision.
