Our Goal The Clackamas County Vector Control District is responsible for control of flies and mosquitoes within Clackamas County. Control of these vectors is not intended to be total eradication since this concept is unachievable and environmentally unsound, requiring unacceptable quantities of pesticides. The goal of the District, therefore, is to limit the number of vectors, thus reducing annoyance and the likelihood of vector borne disease for people living in the county. Mosquito Life Cycle Eggs - The most common mosquitoes lay egg rafts that float on the water. Each raft contains from 100 to 400 eggs. Within a few days the eggs hatch into larvae.

Larva - The larva or “wiggler” comes to the surface to breathe through a tube called a siphon. It sheds its skin or molts four times during the next several days. It grows rapidly between each molt. On the fourth molt it changes into a pupa.

Pupa - The pupa or “tumbler” cannot eat. It breathes through two tubes on its back. The adult mosquito grows inside the pupa and, in two days or so, when it is fully developed, it splits the pupal skin and emerges to complete the life cycle or metamorphosis of the mosquito.

Adult - The newly emerged adult rests on the surface of the water until it is strong enough to fly away and feed.

Fight the Bites Stay inside or in screened-in areas during sunrise, sunset and early evening. Cover up with long sleeves, long pants, socks and closed shoes. Plug in a fan to keep you cool, mosquitoes don’t like moving air. Light citronella candles, tiki torches or even a fire pit where safe. Keep mosquitoes from breeding in your yard by dumping any stagnate water.

Malaria Malaria is much less likely to occur in Oregon due to the necessity for human reservoirs of the disease. Anopheles mosquitoes, the vectors of malaria, are found in some areas of Oregon, and there have been isolated cases where human reservoirs who have visited other countries temporarily provided a source of malaria infection to local residents.

What to Know About Zika Virus Zika virus is spread by the bite of an infected Aedes aegypti or Aedes albopictus mosquito. Because of its cool climate, neither of these mosquito species lives in Oregon. However, travel to countries outside the U.S. can expose you to Zika infection. Remember to take precautions when traveling, including wearing repellent and avoiding places where mosquitoes are active. Breeding Sources We Control Chronic breeding sources created by standing water in street catch basins, sub-division drains, roadside ditches, flood channels, ravines, and similar places on public right-of-way are controlled by routine larviciding operations throughout the year as necessary. West Nile Virus & Encephalitis There are three forms of encephalitis transmitted by mosquitoes in Oregon: West Nile virus, St. Louis encephalitis and Western Equine encephalitis. They are carried into the area by wild birds that are infected elsewhere. These birds show no symptoms. Infected birds are then fed on by local mosquitoes that can pass the virus on to humans by future bites. Symptoms of encephalitis range from flu-like illness to severe brain involvement that can cause death. Western Equine encephalitis can affect horses and other equine animals, as well as humans.

Mosquito-Borne Diseases The four important diseases affecting humans are West Nile virus, encephalitis, malaria and Chikungunya.

Several of the 48 known species of mosquitoes in Oregon can carry diseases under the right conditions.

When a female mosquito takes a blood meal, which she uses as nourishment for her developing eggs, she may transmit certain disease-causing organisms to humans and other animals.

Facts About Mosquito Fish Mosquito fish do not lay eggs, but rather give birth to well developed and very active young. These fish therefore require no special environment for depositing and hatching eggs. The earliest broods of the season are born in April and May; however, they breed throughout the summer with 50 to 100 young in a single brood. The young are approximately one-fourth inch in length when born and are ready to begin destroying mosquito larvae at once.

Gambusia grow rapidly, reaching a maximum size of about three inches.

Facts About Mosquitoes 1. All mosquitoes must have water to complete their life cycle.

2. Only seven days are required to complete the mosquito life cycle.

3. Mosquitoes do not develop on grass or shrubbery, although adults frequently rest in these areas.

4. Only female mosquitoes bite to obtain a blood meal. Male mosquitoes feed on plant juice.

5. Female mosquitoes may live as long as three weeks to several months.
