During one of the panel discussions, speakers acknowledged that India’s move to ban the manufacturing, imports, distribution and sale of single-use plastic (SUP) items across the country from 1 July 2022 could have been done in a better way. It was a policy hastily made without thinking much about future repercussions. Nevertheless, for other speakers in the panel discussion, the ban policy on SUP was a much-needed development in the direction of plastic waste management in the country. They, however, agreed that the policy did not come in a perfect package and much remained to be thought about before the rollout.

he 9th Speciality Films & Flexible Packaging Global Summit 2022 by ElitePlus held in Mumbai, 5-6 September 2022, was one event that the whole flexible packaging fraternity in India (and to some extent overseas visitors as well) was looking forward to with much excitement. After endless virtual meetings, conferences, open houses, and even exhibitions, thanks to the pandemic, the flexible packaging industry was ea gerly waiting to the confluence at an in-person event where people could meet their peers, and industry colleagues and share knowledge, thoughts, and ideas – ElitePlus conference did not disappoint them at all. Attended by over 1,600 attendees from 680 companies representing 18 countries, the event was a grand success – exploring and discussing the latest issues and advancements in the industry through thought-provoking keynote speeches and stimulating panel discussions.

Viability and lack of margins among Indian flexible packaging converters was also a hot topic at the conference. RS Sodhi of Amul asked, “What is sustainability for a nation? Is it not full stomachs and full employment? Sustainability starts when stomachs are full!”

Collecting flexible packaging waste is a mammoth task – but once you are able to collect it, you will be able to easily recycle it as well. Chaturvedi said that the focus should now be on how to collect waste. There is a universal problem of unavailability of plastic feedstock. In his keynote, Chaturvedi shared how his company’s pyrolysis plant has been a failure and economically unviable due to the unavailability of plastic waste.

Pankaj Poddar, group CEO, Cosmo First, while speaking about achieving recyclability and sustainability in a circular economy, asked why different brands are doing similar things in different ways – why are we not talking about standardization? Citing examples of milk pouches and mineral water bottles, Poddar explained how these two industries are implementing standardization in a very successful manner. Entire milk pouches in the country are today packed in LDPE, and a large part of these are recycled because the waste collectors know that the pouches are LDPE and have a complete recycling chain. Similarly, all water bottles are made of PET, making them easily collectible and recyclable.

Monomer material is another myth about recyclability – in his keynote speech, Ashok Chaturvedi, chairman and managing director of UFlex said. The answer to flexible packaging waste is not monomer but collection, sorting and recycling. If you think that monomer is the answer, you will spend another couple of years in it and will go back to square one because it will not reduce waste. Flexible packaging waste will never reduce unless we recycle it.

nilever’s homecare brand Domestos has re-launched its core bleach range in new bottles made from 50% postconsumer recycled plastic (PCR). The brand has moved its UK 750ml bleach range to use recycled plastic, which it says will save 1,505 tonnes of virgin plastic per year. According to Unilever, the new Domestos bottles use high-quality recycled resin to ensure the bottle is strong and durable, while also enabling the incorporation of recycled plastic into the colored bottles without compromising on the distinct color and quality of the packaging.

-Rite, Pantone, and Sun Chemical has re leased a new Eco-Kraft corrugated board dependent color library for PantoneLive, a cloud-based digital color standard ecosystem. The new library enables converters to set achievable expectations to produce Pantone color standards on corrugated board made from recycled materials.

The company, established in 2005 by Tilak Raj, and with day-to-day operations now managed by his daughters, Janvi and Kaveri Satija, is conveniently located in a tri-city area that is better known as ‘Press Site’ for its wealth of local print and packaging busi nesses – from brands to prepress to consumables and production. Kaveri says, “Over the past few years, we have steadily seen more and more printers invest in flexo presses, while brands are increasingly shift ing their offset work to flexo. There was a growing requirement for narrow- and mid-web flexo plates to be provided locally, so it made strategic sense to expand our offering.”

–Print and Packaging subscription, the Eco-Kraft library was built using a brown Kraft substrate with a substantially higher recycled content than in the previous libraries. The result is a base substrate color that is more chromatic. The new library captures the closest achievable match to the core Pantone Match ing System colors that can be produced on Eco-Kraft substrate using water-based inks and flexographic printing. z

ijayshri Packaging installed and commis sioned a new Komori GL 637 plus coater offset press, two LK-800 die cutters of 23.5X31.5-inch size from Zhongke, and a DGM Tech nofold 1100 folder gluer. In addition, Vijayshri has com missioned a 500 Kva solar power unit to boost its captive power production. The latest investment phase comes almost a year after the earlier one in FY 2021-2022, in which the company installed a Komori GL 640 UV press, a Brausse die cutter, a Wenhong die cutter, a corrugation line including a Wenhong 3-ply high-speed flute laminator with flip flop unit, a Lamify 5-ply flute laminator and the H&S Speedliner window patching machine.

In its latest expansion phase, along with the new print and converting equipment, Vijayshri commissioned a 500 Kva solar power unit at its plant to become more self-sustaining in energy. “We had two objectives in mind when we planned the solar power unit. The first was to increase our captive power production capacity so that we become increasingly independent of the grid and secondly, to become more sustainable in our operations. With the new solar power unit, we now produce half of the power required in-house. We have not only increased our power independence, but we have also reduced the load on the grid,” says Jain. z

At the end of last year, the group acquired Manohar Packag ings, a specialist producer of packaging for alcoholic beverages with plants in Goa and Rajpura. This now puts eight production facilities at Parksons’ disposal in seven different locations – in Rudrapur, Chakan, Daman, Goa, Rajpura, Sri City and Guwahati. z

The second is currently en route to Sri City in Andhra Pradesh. The third press has been earmarked for shipment in December and the fourth by April next year.

eepak Walia has joined Manroland Sheetfed’s India operations taking over as managing director from Neeraj Dargan who moves on to his next chapter. Dargan established the India subsidiary in 2014 to start Man roland’s own operations in the territory.

he Label Manufacturers Association of India (LMAI) hosted a panel discussion ‘Labels – what print buyers want’ on 5 August 2022 at Pride Plaza Hotel in New Delhi. Moderated by Harveer Sahni, chairman at Weldon Celloplast and director LMAI, the event was attended by label converters, labelstock suppliers, machine manufacturers and suppliers.

Rajiv Dhar, former director of IIP and senior advisor export packaging at UN, in his keynote address gave an overview of different innovative packaging and highlighted the need to understand consumers’ buy ing psychology and decision-making process. Dhar emphasized that premiumization and personalization with exceptional quality, experience and aesthetics can fuel a taste for unique, value-added products. Dhar said, “What print buyers want?… Nothing but to create a desire to buy!”

Ghoshal said, “Today, for any particular brand of any category, you can see about 25 more competitor brands coming up and trying to create clutter on the shelf. 25 more brands mean 25 times less visibility. In this scenario, consumer engagement is an important factor that influences purchasing decisions. Today, the label on a product must be an interactive and aesthetic solution that is able to draw consumers’ attention – communicate with consumers by providing manufacturing information, sustainability quotient as well as virtual reality while also instructing and educating, among other things.”

The event was a perfect opportunity for the label industry to discuss new trends, challenges and sustainability. The panel members were Sanjay Ghoshal, senior GM and head of packaging, Diageo India; Naveen Stuart, cluster packaging manager, Reckitt Benckiser; Anil Namugade, founder and director, Trigon Digipack; Sanjeev Sharma, director product management, Avery Dennison; and Nirav Shah, founder Letragraphix.

During the panel discussion, Sanjay Ghoshal, senior GM and head of packaging, Diageo India, said that the aesthetics of a label doesn’t just start with the printing but can also start with the material. In line with Dhar, Ghoshal also stressed the importance of consumer engagement. He said that there is a greater need to increase a brand’s visibility to not get lost in the crowd.

Anil Namugade, founder and director, Trigon Digipack, said, “Today, print buyers/brand owners are looking for more than a mere print. They are looking for partners who can help them in handling sustainability chal lenges as well as boost the design capability of their brands. In short, they are looking for partners who can provide maximum value in the whole print process.”

Sanjeev Sharma, director product management, Avery Dennison, said “As a label stock manufacturer, the biggest challenge we face in sustainability is how we can enable recyclability because of the adhesives and ink on the label. Ghoshal added, “Currently, short-run premium labels printed on digital label presses are in great demand. They are many upcoming bands, continuously experi menting with their products in the market with multiple variants with hyper localization. At the end of the day, a label which is made for consumer engagement or which is meant to be sustainable has also the responsibility of creating value for the brand owner.”

Naveen Stuart, cluster packaging manager, Reckitt Benckiser, said, “Being an FMCG company, when we talk about consumer engagement, we are today looking at how we can use personalization to engage with our consumers. This is the biggest thing that we are currently looking at as an FMCG company – and this is true for many other companies as well.”

Pankaj Poddar:The new production line for Cast Polypropylene (CPP) films in Aurangabad will have a rated annual capacity of 25,000 MT. In Aurangabad, the new production line will result in the addition of 50 new direct jobs and numerous indirect jobs.

Pankaj Poddar: Cosmo Films aims to increase its share of specialty films and become the world’s largest speciality film player. Cosmo Films is also foraying into new markets in order to meet these objectives. We have announced the opening of the biggest BOPP film production line in the world, with a rated annual capacity of 67,000 metric tons, in Aurangabad, India. By the second quarter of 2022, a new BOPET film line will also be commissioned, which will significantly aid the business in increasing production and sales.

In 2022, the company will focus on how to manufacture these new products with maximum efficiency. “At the K 2022, once again we will present innovative solutions and show examples of specific end products. Pankaj Poddar: Due to supply chain problems and growing input costs, raw material prices have risen at sustained, high rates over the last 5-7 quarters. The price of every kind of commodity in the world, includ ing steel, aluminum, and plastics, increased. Even the import and export logistics increased. Although the price of raw materials has partially decreased, no significant impact has yet been noticed. There is a lot more cooling that needs to occur. Regardless, Cosmo has continued to deliver great results in terms of growth and EBITDA each quarter. z

After its recent success with Triveni Engineering for packing its premium crystal sugar, UFlex has come up with a 3-layered 3D pouch with registered metallization for their premium brown sugar. The pack’s structure is made of PET/window MET PET and NAT PE. The structure provides a metallic sheen look to the pack while allowing consumers to see the packed content.

UFlex has integrated Registered Fresnel Lens Tech nology in labeling solution to give a premium look by placing two lenses at the middle and bottom of the label. The Fresnel lens used on the printed area re flects light at multiple angles providing 3-dimensional depth and look to the product. The combination of a Fresnel lens that is reflective from various angles along with vibrant printing produces an effect that is both aesthetically striking and instantly recognizable for scrutiny. This application is used across several industry verticals such as FMCG, automobile, lubri cants, apparel, liquor, agrochemicals, personal care and electronics. z

Beyond convenience and striking aesthetics, its 3-ply packaging structure offers good standability that creates a unique shelf appeal on the retail shelves, UFlex claims.

Due to its super strong adhesion, the pack can resist a boil ing temperature of 131oC for 30 minutes with up to 2 kilograms of packed pressure. The development is suitable for food and pharma packaging applications.

In another development, UFlex has developed a 3D Pouch with paper-based barrier laminate for Beachville Coffee Roaster. The standable pack structure offers good barrier properties to keep the packed coffee in the desired state. According to UFlex, the pouch’s one-side valve helps retain the freshness of the coffee and prevents extraneous factors like moisture, air and more from affecting the quality of the packed content.

The Engineering Business of UFlex has developed a compact, high-speed turret slitter with 1650 mm web width – Toroslit-1650. According to the company, the slitter overcomes the shortcomings of conventional slitters that were observed during pancake applica tions. The company claims that the self-shaft chucking, tool-less unwinder of the machine ensures perfect tension control and winding even while handling low gauge films ranging from 8 microns onwards.

So far, the flexible packaging business had been using 6,000 ppm to 10,000 ppm of silica chips that comprises 7.5% to 12.5% dosing used of silica chips for film production that facilitates easy roll handling and prevents the film from blocking hazards like rippling, wrinkles and other. Lorentzen, who had recently immigrated to the United States from Denmark, had observed the evolution of car seat cushion production within the automotive component industry, which was moving toward the use of molded polyurethane foam. The lack of special ized products necessitated the use of plain floor wax to separate the molded polyurethane cushions from the mold, an inefficient method at best that caused high scrap rates and downtime. However, Lorentzen’s observations led to the development of new release agents that made polyurethane foam molding easier, more reliable and more cost efficient than before.

We all know, Chem-Trend is one of the leaders in the world for release agents, purging compounds, and other process chemical specialties. Let us take a small glimpse into the history on how the journey started.

“What he learned during the process was one of ChemTrend’s founding principles – there is no perfect ‘instant’ release agent, each production situation is different and therefore requires a release agent specific to the need,” says Devanir Moraes, Chem-Trend president and CEO.

High pressure die casting operations in the 1950s and ‘60s were dangerous and dirty. Die casters commonly used solvent-based die lubricants, containing graphite, which frequently caught fire due to the high temperatures used in the process. The overspray created slippery, unsafe floors in the plants. The plants were thick with black smoke, causing worker safety and health hazards. Lorentzen began to research the issues of die lubrication and set about to formulate a viable water-based die lubricant, something that industry experts of the time said was not possible. He created a clean, cream-colored die lubricant, and shortly after, a water-based die lubricant. These product development efforts gave the die casters cleaner, safer working conditions, as well as cleaner, brighter castings.

It started very small. Peer Lorentzen, a chemical en gineer, aided by his wife Birgit, a chemist herself, ex perimented with the development of release agents for polyurethane foam in the kitchen of their home. They saw a need, and with an entrepreneurial spirit, they expanded rapidly. After sending out many sample jars of their newly developed product, they moved production out of their home and into a rented garage in Howell, Michigan. Thus began the story of Chem-Trend. Today, with parent company Freudenberg, it has a global presence, serving nearly every manufacturing industry and leading the release agent and purging compound industries in innovation, in research, and in sustainability.

The family-owned business has made a name for itself since its found ing days in 1884 – and gained a firm foothold in Scandinavia and beyond. Today, Arvid Nordquist is the country’s fastest growing coffee brand with over 25% market share. The keys to the company’s success are manifold, spanning high-quality raw materials as well as a strong commitment to fair and sustain able business practices. As a purchaser and roaster, the company relies on sustainable Arabica beans to ensure high quality across its entire range of ground coffee and whole beans. Today, it is Sweden’s first coffee roasting company that entirely runs on renewable energy. When it comes to domestic transport, the company aims to achieve the same by 2025. A biogas-powered truck already transports 100% of Arvid Nordquist’s coffee from the roastery to the warehouse partner.

where transport routes are long, every gram counts. Compared to loosely filled stand-up bags, tight vacuum packs contain significantly more coffee and less air. One cubic meter of vacuumpacked coffee achieves a ratio of 94% coffee versus 6% air – a result that remains unmatched by any other type of coffee packaging. “In terms of sustainability, this is already a big leap, as we are able to ship larger volumes of product per transport and thus reduce each freight’s CO2 footprint. But we seek to push the boundaries even further,” Anders Nordquist says.

Kleiner to fine-tune the film so that the PKD can process it with the same speed and at the same capacities as traditional materials,” Anders Nordquist says. The company ran extensive tests with its film and packaging machinery partners. “We are happy that the trials were successful and allow us to run the desired film. This way, we can tick an important box on our list of goals.”

Filling and Sealing

These require lower sealing temperatures and shorter sealing windows to prevent the outer film layer from melting and sticking to the sealing jaws – which is exactly what Syntegon’s adapted PKD helps avoid. The latest model can not only seal at lower temperatures thanks to integrated heat protection on the sealing jaws. It also allows to form packaging materials more efficiently by using pre-heated tools to bypass the memory effect – which comes in handy for aluminumfree films. Thanks to servo drives, the mandrel wheel can further accommodate a larger variety of packs, adding to overall forming and packaging flexibility.

“For this reason, we had to rethink the way we vacuumpack our coffee, as traditional sealing and forming technologies can compromise the integrity of nontraditional films,” Anders Nordquist explains. New films thus called for new equipment – and for support from long-term partner Syntegon. “Arvid Nordquist has been relying on the PKD vacuum packaging technology from Syntegon since the installation of their first vacuum packaging line in 1994,” says Johan Hintze, CEO of Kafeco Nordic, Syntegon’s long-term distributor in Scandinavia. “As an experienced partner, in 2021 we readily helped the company optimize their packaging operations with an updated version of the PKD.”

The high-performance mandrel wheel packaging machine forms, fills and seals vacuum packs of ground coffee at high output rates of up to 130 packs per minute. Before switching to alternative films, Arvid Nordquist had been using a PKD model built to pro cess aluminum and fossil-based films. But while the machine’s heat sealing technology works well with traditional films that require high temperatures, it was no match for Arvid Nordquist‘s new packaging variants.

REVAMPED TECHNOLOGYPACKAGING

NEXT STOP MONO-LAMINATES–

Traditional vacuum packages include multilayer composite materials with a significant amount of aluminum for easy formability. Given its sustainability goals, with support from Swiss film specialist O. Kleiner AG, Arvid Nordquist has gradually switched to a composite film without aluminum, the production of which is considered an environmental burden. As an alternative to fossil-based films, the current solution contains 90% of material from renewable resources, supporting Arvid Nordquist’s CO2 reduction. However, the material comes with challenging characteristics. Just like any plastic, it is prone to regaining its initial shape after bending. “This so-called memory effect is all the more predominant as aluminum is missing from the material,” Martin Kleiner, CEO at O. Kleiner, states.

The alternative proteins market, in my opinion, could be at particular risk of EMA. Unlike traditional meatbased proteins, plant and insect proteins are often broken down to reduce bulk and transportation costs, resulting in homogeneous dry powders that can be almost indistinguishable to the naked eye, and are therefore very easy to dilute or ‘bulk out’ with cheaper, visually similar powders.

Mitigating food fraud in the alternative proteins market

Consumers are waking up to the idea of insect farming as a sustainable solution for increasing food demands. Research from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) suggests that edible insects are not only high in protein, vitamins, and essential amino acids, but also have a very high food conver sion rate. To produce the same amount of protein, crickets require 1/6 of the feed needed for cattle, a quarter of that needed for sheep, and half that of pigs and chickens, all while producing lower greenhouse gas emissions.

n a global level, we are seeing increasing awareness of the environmental impact of cattle and conventional meat farm ing, which is driving a rise in flexitarian, vegan, and plant-based diets, and growing interest in the use of alternative proteins such as peas, soya, wheat, and even insects. Indeed, a recent report from FMCG Gurus revealed that 14% of global consumers had reduced or eliminated meat from their diet in the previous 12 months. The same report pointed out that 30% of global consumers found insects as a form of processed food, for example as flour or meal, appealing.

As the alternative proteins market grows, so too do the challenges for brands operating within this space. Food fraud can be a key concern in emerging food markets – specifically, the risk of economically mo tivated adulteration (EMA), where low-quality, cheap ingredients are added to bulk out higher value goods. Common examples of EMA include the addition of corn or fructose syrup in high-value honey, and dilution of wine or other alcoholic beverages with vinegar or other low-value liquids.

The alternative proteins market presents an exciting opportunity for brands, but it also comes with risks, not least the risk of food fraud and economically motivated adulteration, which can cause significant problems for brands in upstream supply chains. With this in mind, Adem Kulauzovic, director of automation, Domino Printing Sciences, sheds some light on the challenges faced by brands operating in the new emerging proteins market, and provides insight on how the industry can work together to help manage these new risks.

in the alternative proteins space will very likely have customers with dietary restrictions for ethical or religious reasons. If insect powder – the majority of which is non-Kosher – were to inadvertently end up in a product labeled as vegan, vegetarian, or Kosher, this would undoubtedly cause serious upset with consumers within these demographics, leading to loss of trust, and irreparable damage to brand im age, which – for publicly-listed companies – can also wipe hundreds of millions of dollars off a share price.

The benefits of implementing such systems extend far beyond the obvious need to protect consumers, and brand image. Consumers are already asking for more transparency, and brands that take steps to implement traceability within their raw materials supply and provide ways to share that information, will undoubtedly earn trust and loyalty from current and prospective customers.

There is no doubt in my mind that the answer to com bating food fraud and adulteration in emerging food markets lies in collaborative action and data sharing. As the alternative proteins market grows – and with limited regulation in place – raw materials providers, food processors, packagers, and everyone involved in the global food supply chain will need to work together to improve supply chain transparency and the trace ability of raw ingredients used in food production.

With the potential fallout of product mislabeling and the resultant recalls well known, the question re mains, what can brands operating in the alternative proteins market do to protect themselves from the risk of food fraud? In my experience from working with manufacturers of processed food, the only way to overcome such issues is with transparency, data sharing, and collaboration.

EMA can also include contamination with products that are not suitable for human consumption. A par ticularly devastating example of this was the 2008 melamine scandal in China, where infant formula was contaminated with melamine – a toxic, nitrogenrich compound that falsely elevates protein levels in standard quality control tests – leading to the death of six children. Quality control tests have evolved since the melamine scandal, however, so too has counterfeiting – and the reality is that counterfeiters

today. It’s no secret that ingredient shortages force brands to look outside their usual, secure supply chains, potentially opening the door for opportunistic counterfeiters to fill the gap in supply, as they look to take advantage of the increased cost of raw ingredients driven by global demand.

the question of legislation – as it stands there are very few legislative requirements for batchlevel traceability of raw ingredients – including protein powders – but this could soon change. Indeed, new traceability requirements for certain raw produce are expected under the next update of the US Food Safety Modernization Act. It may only be a matter of time before the food industry follows the same route as the Falsified Medicines Directive (FMD), and other pharmaceutical regulations, and mandates compulsory serialization of products, in order to increase transpar ency within this market.

To share this information, and foster collaborative action, brands should look to partner with reliable coding and marking providers, to implement a system of audited, verified information, and provide manufacturers, retailers, and consumers with the data that links finished products to their original raw materials. z

Loss of brand image is nothing compared with the damage that could be done in the event of contamina tion with an unidentified allergen – and when it comes to ‘dry powders’ there are many potential allergens to consider. Many alternative protein sources – including wheat, soya, and peas – are themselves recognized allergens, and subject to legislative allergen labeling requirements. In a similar vein, insect protein, while not currently recognized by most regional allergen labeling regulations, has been known to cause reac tions in people with allergies to crustacea and house dust mites.

CONCLUSION

Until such time, brands producing processed goods are ultimately reliant on their suppliers – but the onus is on the brand to promote trust and transparency, and to ensure that the suppliers they work with can guarantee the legitimacy of their products and raw materials. Brands should also look to implement strict audits and inspections, with raw materials tested to verify that no adulteration has occurred.

He told the audience that the standards created by BIS are not static but dynamic in nature and recently the standard IS 15495 was revised by incorporating chemicals like toluene and certain phthalates. He also mentioned that the current ink standard is a negative list standard that restricts certain chemicals in ink formulations.

The session had expert speakers from Food Safety and Standard Authority of India (FSSAI), Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), and Siegwerk, that came together to provide clarity on the legal obligations for FMCG sector and associated packaging suppliers.

Globally the discussion around the subject is leading to more awareness in the market which is subsequently pushing the regulators to further raise the bar on packaging safety. The regulations worldwide are getting stricter and harmonized, pushing the supply chain partners to adhere to the new norms. FSSAI has raised the bar on packaging safety in recent food packaging regulations. The Bureau of Indian standards has revised the standard IS 15495.

Legal obligations towards packaging safety for FMCG sector and packaging material suppliers

Harish mentioned that the FSS (Packaging) regulation was notified on 24 December 2018 and enforced from 1 July 2019 and clarified that the FSSAI regulation is mandatory for the Food Business Operators (FBOs) and manufacturers of materials to ensure compli ance. He then provided details about the regulation and explained how material-wise requirements have been specified for paper and board, glass, metal and metal alloys, and plastics. He further elaborated that in the regulation, the definition of Food Grade has been incorporated, inks have been regulated as per IS 15495 among several other changes. He also mentioned about the recent amendment on use of recycled plastics in food packaging (which is currently only limited to rPET) and the process around the ap proval of use of recycled plastics.

He highlighted the roles and responsibili ties of FSSAI and detailed the process of drafting a regulation at FSSAI. He mentioned that the industry has long been focused on food products, but not on the safety aspects of the packaging/ packaging material and for this reason, there were concerns and this was addressed by FSSAI and for the same reason the FSS (Packaging & Labelling) Regulation, 2011 was split into Packaging Regulation (in effect since 2019), Advertisement & Claim regulation and Labelling & Display regulation to give due importance to Packaging.

Takkar further emphasized the correct documenta tion practices that demonstrate packaging safety. He mentioned that currently a lot of certifications/ self-declarations issued by the manufacturers are not adequate enough to demonstrate compliance however are well accepted by the brand owners because there is limited understanding of packaging safety, associated legal obligations and systematic processes that are required to demonstrate the compliance. He shared examples of the correct certification methodology and explained all clauses that need to be captured in an authentic declaration. He concluded his session by explaining the reasons for creating more awareness on packaging safety primarily from the brand owners and regulators end as well as the need for harmonizing the Indian standards with the best available standards globally. z

toropack’s new air cushion film, AIRplus BIO Home Compostable, increases the focus on sustainability, as it fulfills the definitions of bioplastics – it is partly bio-based, using the natural and renewable resource starch, and home composta ble. The extremely lightweight air cushions not only reduce shipping weight but also reduce plastic waste by closing the natural cycle. The film is certified by TÜV Austria for home composting and can be disposed of alongside organic waste on home compost heaps.

In accordance with the DIN EN 13432 standard, on which the certification is based, at least 90% of the film degrades into natural resources within 365 days, leaving no plastics or toxic material behind. Depending on the temperature and microculture of the compost, microbes and heat fully convert the remaining 10% as well into carbon dioxide, water, and biomass. The certification ensures that the resulting biomass is plant and worm-friendly. Air cushions made from the innovative organic film boast outstanding packaging characteristics and are designed to reliably protect light to medium weight shipping goods.

“Our goal for 2025 is to source at least 50% of our raw materials from recycled or renewable resources. Our new AIRplus Bio Home Compostable film brings us one step closer to this goal,” explains Vicentina Pereira, product manager of AIR and LOOSE FILL at Storopack.
