T

his will be a very exciting month for the print and packaging industry. After several postponements due to uncertainties caused by the pandemic, Printpack India is back! From 26 to 30 May 2022, the printing and packaging fraternity will converge at India Expo Center, Greater Noida. Printpack India is not only a printing-packaging trade fair to see the latest developments and to place orders; it is also a confidence barometer for the entire print media industry itself, its markets, its clients and its suppliers. The packaging industry is changing.

New technologies are establishing themselves. The Printpack event has always responded to this change and has opened up new visitor target groups with state-of-the-art technologies and new solutions.

At the last PrintPack, organized in 2019 at India Expo Centre, Greater Noida, 509 Indian and foreign exhibitors had displayed their state-of-the-art machinery and other equipment on a net area of 65,000 square meters. The overall growth in space booking compared to the previous edition recorded an increase of 47%. The show attracted business visitors from 82 countries and recorded an overall increase of 75% compared to the previous edition. There were many highlights at PrintPack India 2019 – including live demonstration of several sheetfed multicolor presses (a rarity for a 5- or 6-day show anywhere nowadays). Even this year, the show is fully booked. Visitors can expect to see several live demonstrations of machines (printing as well as converting) at the show.

Another attraction of the Printpack event will be the Print Business Outlook Conference 2022. The Association for Print Technologies (APTech India), formerly NPES, will host the conference in partnership with the Indian Printing Packaging and Allied Machinery Manufacturers’ Association (IPAMA) which will be held on 28 May 2022, India Expo Centre, Greater Noida in conjunction with the Printpack India 2022 exhibition.

The full-day conference, ‘Print: Can Innovation Awaken a Sleeping Giant?’ will bring together printers, publishers, manufacturers, and suppliers to examine current issues and discuss the latest developments facing today’s printing industry.

Printing and packaging companies are facing unprecedented challenges. Printers’ margins are getting thinner, and the increasing costs and scarcity of labor are affecting the print and packaging world. With this backdrop, attention is increasingly turning to the promise of robotics and automation to boost global printing, improve efficiencies, and better safeguard security printing globally. The conference will raise and debate critical issues facing the industry.

The key focus will be on the problems facing the global printing and packaging industry; emerging applications; critical developments in the industry; key enabling technologies for printed electronics applications; and evaluation of the challenges and barriers facing the industry.

Huhtamaki prints 12 million unique packs for Nestlé KitKat

I

n a category-first innovation, Huhtamaki India, a leading provider of primary consumer packaging and decorative labeling solutions in India – and part of Huhtamaki, a key global provider of sustainable packaging solutions based in Finland, has printed 12 million unique packs for Nestlé Kitkat #LoveBreak Series.

To celebrate the month of February as the ‘Season of Love’, Nestlé KitKat rolled out limited edition packs called #LoveBreak building on the insight that every relationship is unique, so, should be the way to express love. Huhtamaki India has delivered 12 million unique packs of the collection using variable data printing technique. The designs were printed on a state-of-the-art digital press machine at its Silvassa plant using complex cold seal operation.

The limited edition packs have three design categories based on relationship archetypes named BAE (romantic partners), BFF (best friends) and BUDDY (casual friends). Each of these design categories have a representational outline shape with quirky mosaic

to support them in growing their market. Smart and innovative digital printing enables a realm of new packaging possibilities in terms of variable data printing, short-runs, quick turn-around time and energizing shelf-appeal of flexible pouches and laminates. Digital printing delivers high-resolution and enables layering of printed patterns to form a multicolor pattern delivering perfect registration, matching gravure printing with all colors printed in a single pass.”

Stora Enso introduces formed fiber lids for takeaway packaging

tora Enso has partnered with Picadeli, a leading takeaway salad bar company, to introduce formed fiber lids for takeaway packaging that are recyclable and biodegradable. The lids are made from PureFiber by Stora Enso, which

the company says is produced from wood-based formed fiber sourced from sustainably managed forests and using green energy. The PureFiber lids reportedly contain no plastic, as well as no per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances or other forever chemicals.

In addition, the companies claim the new lids are recyclable and biodegradable. The carbon footprint of the PureFiber lid is up to 75% lower compared to alternative materials such as plastic or bagasse, the companies add.

idel has launched PressureSAFE, a PET aerosol container suitable for home and personal care products, which is approved for recycling in traditional PET streams and reportedly offers a lower carbon footprint than aluminum alternatives.

Sidel claims that the PET aerosol container is resistant to pressure in order to maintain a safe structure and to protect against leakages, breakages, and rolling during transportation and storage. The company says that this makes the PET container as safe as metal aerosol containers.

Mikael Derrien, packaging and tooling innovation manager at Sidel, says, “The adoption of PressureSAFE aerosol containers enables companies to demonstrate their carbon-saving credentials, reflecting their own environmental commitment, while responding to the sustainability demands of their customers. We’ve taken our 30-years of technical design, innovation and packaging experience and translated this into the new PressureSAFE product.

In addition, the company suggests that the PressureSAFE PET aerosol container provides a competitive, sustainable alternative to traditional metal containers. Sidel reports that the average PET market price is lower than aluminum, while PET reportedly has a raw material carbon footprint that is almost half that of aluminum – 645g of CO2eq for aluminum compared to 380g of CO2eq for PET, based on a 150ml personal care product and according to the company’s data.

Berry develops metal-free, 100% polyolefin dispenser

B

erry Global has developed a 2cc dispenser made from 100% polyolefin with no metal parts, which the company says makes it recyclable when paired with PET bottles where appropriate facilities exist. The new dispenser will be available from the end of 2022.

The 2cc size is the first in Berry’s new Wave atmospheric dispenser platform, with 3cc, 4cc and 0.25ml versions to be launched in the future. The company expects to invest over $100 million in the coming years in manufacturing capabilities throughout its global operations in order to provide localised supply to meet the identified demand from both national and international customers.

iraclon has launched spot color support for PureFlexo Printing. Introduced in 2021 for process printing, PureFlexo Printing controls unwanted ink spread and allows for greater latitude on press to meet today’s high-quality expectations of brand clients while maximizing plant output and efficiency. It reduces unscheduled press stops and ultimately improves businesses’ financial bottom line.

Delivered as a new feature set for the Kodak Flexcel NX Print Suite for flexible packaging, the new launch enables flexible packaging printers to expand the cost-saving benefits of PureFlexo Printing to higher volume anilox applications, and is consistent with Miraclon’s commitment to deliver a constant stream of innovation to customers.

“PureFlexo Printing is enabled by unique multi-functional plate surface patterns designed to precisely control ink flow during printing. “When higher anilox volumes are used for traditional larger pigment-based spot colors, it usually results in the use of harder tapes, higher impression, and other common printing practices to adjust to the higher anilox volumes. These practices often produce undesirable print effects such as halo, dirty print, and TEV (trailing edge void), while the higher ink volumes also have greater drying needs, causing slowdown in the flexographic printing process to increase drying capacity. PureFlexo Printing addresses all these typical issues to ensure better up-time and consistency on press,” says Anderson.

t Paperex 2022, Michelman promoted paper packaging solutions – developed using its coatings for barrier properties – for the secondary packaging applications of the eCommerce industry. Michelman is leveraging its packaging incubator in Mumbai to bring innovations by applying barrier properties on paper to replace plastic used in various applications.

“Today, eCommerce companies in India dispatch approximately 70% of their products in plastic bags while the remaining in corrugated boxes. While corrugated boxes are slightly cost-prohibitive, eCommerce companies prefer plastic bags since the average value order in India is significantly lower compared to western countries. Instead of plastic bags, they can now use our barrier-coated 100% recyclable bags,” said Shailesh Nema, vice president and managing director of Michelman.

“This product is doing remarkably well in the market.

We do our best to serve our customers. Innovations are also coming in from Michelman with the global supply chain challenges,” said Andrew Michelman, executive vice president of Michelman. “This is high time for us to innovate because the industry is battling compliance for plastic waste management regulation.”

Michelman added, “The supply chain problem will continue while the demand remains high. To overcome this problem, in addition to streamlining our processes to keep supplies coming in from our suppliers, we are also encouraging our customers to try our alternative products. We are providing them with more product options. The more options our customers have, the more ability we will have to keep them supplying – we are leveraging our R&D resources to design alternative solutions. ADDING POSITIVE RECYCLING VALUE TO PACKAGING

The digital printing industry has benefited from Michelman’s collaborative innovation with HP Indigo for nearly 20 years. Michelman works directly with HP Indigo to offer the only HP-certified press primers for paper and film media to produce the best possible output. Its DigiPrime primers, certified for HP Indigo presses, optimize a wide range of substrates with solutions for printers, converters, and paper mills.

“Today, the biggest problem is that 90% of postconsumer waste being collected is not recyclable, ending up in landfills. At Michelman, our responsibility is to add positive recycling value to packaging so that they go to recyclers instead of landfills. A bundle of paper has a high recycling value and gets collected by recyclers in no time. That is how we should be able to convert other packaging structures. Michelman is working in that direction to add recyclable value to the structure using our barrier coating solutions. We aim to convert multi-layer structures into mono-layer or mono-family structures, and wherever possible, accommodate paper structure to make everything recyclable,” Nema said.

Michelman added, “We keep adding to our capability consistently. We neither decrease our investment during bad times nor do we pull back during the recession. Our R&D is focused on innovating a sustainable future. So all our new investments are directed towards sustainability – and we will continue to do that globally and in India too.”

“We work in parallel with HP – we both are developing the respective next-generation products that will help us succeed further. I think it is a wonderful partnership. I hope to see our Indian customers leverage this partnership even more as digital print grows in the country,” said Michelman.

Speaking about the Indian market, Michelman added, “We have had great success in Asia over the past many decades. Swedish collaboration between three innovative companies at the forefront of sustainability – PulPac, Liplid and MAX Burgers – is replacing the traditional plastic lid with a sustainable fiber-based alternative.

As announced earlier, MAX Burgers, the first quick service restaurant chain in the world to label and compensate for the food’s impact on the environment, will start to roll out the Liplid in all their restaurants in Sweden this year.

“This has been a fantastic project, where we have adapted Liplid’s brilliant product to our technology – and will manufacture the first series of 2 million lids for Liplid. We look forward to seeing them go live at MAX Burgers,” says Sanna Fager, chief commercial officer at PulPac. n line with the commitment made last year, diversified Indian conglomerate ITC has gone beyond plastic neutrality in 2021-22 through the orchestration of an integrated solid waste management programme that incorporates unique and multidimensional initiatives.

The company collected and sustainably managed more than 54,000 tonnes of plastic waste across

ITC WOW, which enables the creation of a clean and green environment through community partnerships, has so far covered 18 million citizens across 46.7 lakh households in India. Currently operational in Bengaluru, Mysuru, Hyderabad, major towns of Telangana, Coimbatore, Chennai, Tirupur, Cochin, Muzaffarpur, Delhi and several districts of Andhra Pradesh, the initiative has raised awareness in over 52 lakh school children and 2,000 corporates since its inception. In addition to WOW, a separate ITC programme on Solid Waste Management (SWM), which deals with both wet and dry waste, is also operational in 17 districts of 9 states covering 14.6 lakh households. Huhtamaki Foundation sets up its first recycling plant in Maharashtra

T

he Huhtamaki Foundation inaugurated its first recycling plant in Khopoli, Maharashtra on 2 May 2022 to help drive circularity for packaging. The site – which is spread across 2,000 square meters – will recycle about 1,600 kilograms of post-consumer used flexible plastic waste per day from early May as the plant becomes fully operational.

The Central Pollution Board of India (2012) estimates that India generates close to 26,000 tonnes of plastic waste a day and a little over 10,000 tonnes a day of plastic waste remains uncollected.

The recycling plant was set up with an investment of INR 90 million as part of the Huhtamaki Foundation’s #CloseTheLoop initiative to tackle postconsumer waste to deliver a valuable secondary resource material. It will process post-consumer waste to create resin to produce refined compounds to be used for household products for consumers in India.

The Recycling plant uses advanced technology to enable the efficient sorting of post-consumer waste, hot washing to remove any contamination, extrusion with extra filtration and deodorization. This ensures the recycled material can then be used for domestic appliances. The Huhtamaki Foundation worked with the local community and authority in Maharashtra, NGOs, social enterprises and educational institutes, including Swachh, Stri Mukti Sanghtana, CIPET and ICT, to develop this sustainable plastic waste management system. The plant is fully operational from 2 May 2022.

Sorting waste at home is recommended as the way to prevent household waste from ending up at a landfill. McDonald’s tests circular clear cups sourced from recycled and biobased materials

M

cDonald’s, along with its partners Pactiv Evergreen, INEOS, Neste, and LyondellBasell, will trial clear plastic cups sourced from post-consumer plastic and biobased materials such as used cooking oil, using a mass-balance approach to produce the recyclable solution.

The test, according to McDonald’s, is one of many steps that will help the company to meet its goal of sourcing 100% of guest packaging from renewable, recycled or certified sources by 2025. Additionally, McDonald’s is working hard to increase the accessibility of this material nationwide.

The new circular clear cups are made with the intention of being nearly identical to the McDonald’s existing cups. According to the company, consumers are unlikely to notice any difference between the two.

According to McDonald’s, the test cups are sourced from a 50-50 mix of post-consumer plastic material and biobased materials. The company says that the material uses mass balance method process which will

allow it to measure and track recycled and biobased inputs being used in the process while also mixing traditional fossil-fuel sources. The biobased material is crafted in part from McDonald’s used cooking oil.

Jenny McColloch, vice president of global sustainability at McDonald’s, said, “We know that plastic packaging can provide the food safety and performance our customers expect from their McDonald’s experience, but we also believe that plastic pollution is an issue we all need to help address. Ultimately, this test signals to the industry that McDonald’s – one of the world’s largest restaurant companies – is serious about supporting the production of biobased and recycled materials.” z

rint O Pack Global Offset in Noida recently ordered an automatic die-cutter MHK1050 ATC with leaf from Robus India.

Started in 1985 in Delhi as Chawla & Sons by Bharat Bhushan Chawla, the company used to produce sweet boxes as job work. However, today it provides comprehensive packaging solutions in-house from prepress, and printing through final product.

The company produces sweets boxes for Haldiram and Bikanervala, toy boxes, TV boxes, and green crackers boxes in addition to providing festive and gift packaging

solutions. The company also produces cartons for the pharma industry. Sweet boxes, and festive and gift packaging is the forte of the company and has carved a name for itself in the market.

The company installed its first printing machine in 2006 – a Heidelberg 5-color press. During the same time, the company also invested in its prepress and post-press unit, converting its setup into a one-stopshop for complete packaging solution. The company kept upping the ante and in 2015, it installed another multi-color press – a Heidelberg 6-color + coater press.

With increased production and growing demand, the space in the Delhi plant seemed limited over time.

Hitesh Chawla and Nivesh Chawla – both brothers and second-generation – then started the Noida plant in 2019. Currently, the Noida plant has a Heidelberg 6-color + coater press. The Noida plant also houses a corrugation unit that produces 1.6 lac sheets every day.

In 2020, the company installed a Robus Rapid foldergluer at its Noida plant. Later, it also installed a lamination machine from Robus. Nivesh Chawla of Global Offset said, “We are satisfied with the performance of the Robus folder-gluer and lamination machine, and the ability of the machines to promptly process various kinds of demands that we are receiving from the market.”

and postpress unit. Nivesh Chawla shared that another 5-color press – a Heidelberg CD 98 – has been ordered for the Noida plant, and will be installed in July 2022.

The automatic die-cutter from Robus will be installed between April-May 2022. Chawla added, “The second Heidelberg has been ordered to meet our increased demand as well as to support the existing press in the event of any breakdowns.”

Chawla said, “Delivering high-quality products with time to market is our motto. We have invested in Robus machines once again because we are happy with the Robus machines already running at our plant, and after working on their machines for so many years, we knew Robus will not let us down. Robus’ machines come at a very competitive rate while at the same time also don’t compromise on quality, features and production speed. The existing Robus folder-gluer at our plant helps us to produce high-quality cartons and boxes at high speeds, fulfilling our increased demand for packaging. Also, the hand-holding, training and guidance including after-sales service support of team Robus is commendable.”

Harish Gupta of Sai Com Codes Flexoprint said, “Technically, it is a 12-color printing press with three screen printing units that can be installed anywhere in the press. The additional screen units are for print embellishment. In addition, the press has a special attachment to produce multi-layer labels. This is the first time we have invested in a press with more than 10-color units to meet our increased demand.”

WORD OF CAUTION FOR NEW ENTRANTS

While raw material prices have risen, the brand owners are not easy to convince to pay more.

The label converters who have been able to get price increases are the mid-segment, technically sound converters with several presses and robust infrastructure. Gupta said, “Increase in raw material price has spared none but the worse hit are the new entrants with limited machinery. If the situation does not improve soon, they may soon have to move towards consolidation, or worse, sell off their machinery and quit.” z

UNCERTAINTY IN THE MARKET “More than decreased volume, uncertainty in the market is now a major concern. Our customers are unwilling to give projections, and in this scenario, how can a label printer invest further? Meanwhile, paper prices are changing every fortnight. The production of labels for wine, health and cosmetics typically requires specific embellishing steps. This has been traditionally achieved by either printing on a metallic substrate, using metallic inks or using a cold or hot foiling process. However, these traditional

SMI which recorded a turnover of Rs 273 crores (approximately USD 35.6 million) in FY20-21 would receive around Rs 99.65 crores (USD 13 million) as equity value payment from the acquirer after adjustment of net debt and debt-like items.

chaar demonstrated its India-made CI flexo printing press Flexomaster HR500 CI at an open house at its plant in Ambernath, Mumbai on 13-20 April 2022. Kirti Panchal, managing director, Echaar, is optimistic about selling at least three CI flexo presses by the end of FY2023.

Deal signings include one Flexodelight and one Flexosmart press.

Panchal said that the Flexomaster received a very positive response during the open house while serious discussions are on with several potential customers.

Visitors witnessed the Flexomaster HR500 perform effortlessly on 20 micron PET surface and 10 micron PET reverse print at its rated speed of 500 meters a minute using Kodak Flexcel NX plates with both water and solvent-based inks.

According to Panchal and as witnessed in the demonstrations, the press has a very quick changeover time because it integrates Easylock – a patented technology of Echaar’s Italian partner, CT Service SRLS. It also includes a carbon fiber doctor chamber, a full auto wash system, heavy-duty turrets on both unwinder and rewinder, and an automatic reel lifter. Echaar has collaborated with CT Service SRLS. owned by Claudio Maggio an exfounder and director of Uteco. A veteran of the flexo printing industry, Maggio has worked with some of the leading CI flexo press manufacturers in Italy.

In December 2020, Echaar conducted an open house to demonstrate its Flexodelight HL 400 CI press that was sold and installed at Kalyani Packaging in Kolkata.

With a speed of 400 meters a minute, the Flexodelight HL400 has a CI drum diameter of 1850mm with Hestalloy coatings and eight print stations. With a web of 1350mm and a print width of 1300mm, the

“If you look at today’s scenario, you will see that machine building has changed beyond recognition and become highly complex. What is getting even more complex in machine building is the software – the control algorithm. With an increasing demand for newer options and features on machines, software development is getting highly complex. Hence, OEMs see the solution as a great advantage as they don’t have to keep multiple software sources and backups.

“It is developed in such a way that it can fit into any VFSS machines present in the market today. Another important advantage for the OEMs is that they are not required to build their machine according to the solution. Rather, the machine design is complemented by our solution.”

Mungi added that B&R has taken into consideration all combinations and types of VFSS machines manufactured in the market while developing the ospVFFS solution. This makes ospVFSS fit into any VFFS machine easily. “For example, a VFSS machine has an unwinder which typically comes in three formats – servo-driven unwinder where you have a complete servo-driven torque control; VFD control where you just put a VFD and based on a sensor you adjust; third, it is a clutch brake mechanism. Since ospVFSS supports all three, OEMs have to just configure the solution based on the type of unwinder being used in the machine,” he explained. “And, since the solution is scalable, machine manufacturers can choose from a single-axis control up to seven-axis control. The solution is configurable right from the basic VFSS machines to high-end machines.”

Speaking about the market, Mungi said that today customers are not only looking for machines with faster configuration but also the convenience of switching between packet sizes and that too at high speed. Earlier, customers were complacent even if the machine installation took months; however, today customers are unwilling to wait even for an extra day to finish the installation and start production. z

VERSATILITY FROM START TO FINISH During the five-day event, 18 to 22 April, visitors were able to gain an overview of Syntegon’s comprehensive packaging portfolio. Two vertical bagging machines with integrated weighers demonstrated various packaging options for snacks. The SVE 3620 WR continuous bagger showcased Syntegon’s pack style flexibility by creating six different bag styles. Manufacturers looking for high-speed systems were highly interested in the SVE 2520 AR that packages potato chips at an output of up to 95 bags per minute. The vertical portfolio was completed by a Terra 25HS, a high-speed vertical form, fill seal machine with belt draw-off technology.

Ashwani Kumar Sharma: We’re doubling our annual capacity from 3.5 billion to 7.0 billion packs. The commissioning process is well underway, and we will shortly make an announcement about it. Asepto is now the world’s fastest-growing brand in aseptic liquid packaging, with a year-on-year growth rate of more than 100%. It has established itself as the world’s leading aseptic liquid packaging manufacturer in less than four years. With the cutting-edge greenfield project in Sanand, Gujarat, Asepto has cemented its position in India and is now on the rise globally.

Mahan Hazarika: What kind of response are you getting from the market?

Ashwani Kumar Sharma: Asepto has been focusing on developing more and more sustainable products to help our customers provide better product experiences to their consumers. After all, it’s a retail product, and we all know how important packaging is. On a busy shelf, the product that catches the consumer’s eye gets picked up, and the rest is about brand loyalty, which is a big buying criterion as well. Understanding the retail scenario, especially for a packaging like Aseptic liquid cartons, we’ve spent a lot of time studying the market and gathered that a differentiating factor is aesthetic rejuvenation, which was a gap until Asepto entered.

Flex is setting up India’s first U-shaped paper straw manufacturing line for its aseptic liquid packaging business. The manufacturing line is being set up at its existing aseptic liquid packaging plant in Sanand, Gujarat.

UFlex through its aseptic liquid packaging brand Asepto continues its efforts to create a sustainable and clean environment. The paper straw manufacturing line will be powered by fully automated Dutch technology, offering a production capacity of approximately 2.4 billion straws annually.

The food-grade U-shape paper straws that will be attached to and utilized for portion packs for juices and other beverages will be available in 145 mm and 165 mm. UFlex says that the moisture-resistant paper straws will be made from sustainably sourced papers, which are 100% recyclable.

Environmental Protection, people are becoming more aware of their responsibilities to preserve their immediate surroundings and environment. In this light, individuals are eating wisely, and their purchasing patterns have been influenced as well. They’re curious about packaging, its environmental impact, and so on. Being conscious of our carbon footprint is no longer only a business practice; it is also becoming a way of thinking for individuals. As a result, packaging made from safe and sustainable materials has a direct impact on the mindset of end users.

In the current composition of our six-layer aseptic packaging, a very thin coating of aluminum is used acting as a strong light and oxygen barrier, eliminating the need for refrigeration and preventing spoilage of the product without the need of preservatives. In aseptic filling machines, the metal (aluminum) is also used as an induction sealing agent. To completely eliminate aluminum from the system, a technological overhaul involving the paperboard supplier and the present filling technology of the production process is required, which should be accomplished in due time.

These trends are paving the way for plenty of new product categories to emerge in aseptic packaging, to name a few. In the fruit beverage industry, new products such as energy drinks, ready-to-drink ORS, and plant-based beverages, to name a few, have emerged.

They’ve carved out a niche for themselves across the country and are making a substantial contribution to the growth of the aseptic liquid packaging business.

Mahan Hazarika: Do you have any plans in the pipeline for new investments and capacity-building?

Ashwani Kumar Sharma: We are expanding our capacity at Sanand plant to 7 billion packs and we will be commissioning that plant very soon. In addition, the aseptic liquid packaging industry in India is growing at a CAGR of 12-15% per year, currently it’s around 12-13 billion packs per year. Rising demand for food products with a long shelf life, no preservatives, and packaging that is safe and hygienic is propelling the sector forward. We are already witnessing a strong demand in our domestic as well as international order books, and with so much potential on both the domestic and global markets, we will definitely expand our footprint in new geographies.

Mahan Hazarika: What are the key advancements and significant trends in the aseptic packaging market in the last 5 years?

Ashwani Kumar Sharma: Several key trends, in my opinion, are driving the dynamics of the sector.

People are migrating from loose to packaged items and choosing healthier and safer food and beverage options, evident via major changes in end-user purchase habits, especially during this pandemic.

Brands are increasingly using sustainable and efficient packaging solutions and manufacturing processes to appeal to customers of all demographics.

Consumers are more conscious of the importance of utilizing a quality packaged product that is both safe and hygienic. They are conscious and make intelligent choices in favor of products that come in packaging that ensures quality, safety, and hygiene. Tamper-proof

They desire nutritional value propositions among consumers and demand thoughtful choices that fit their lifestyle while also being beneficial for their palate and health. Packaging and techniques that are more natural and offer natural benefits of the product inside are given a lot of attention. Thus, new-age aseptic packaging greatly aids firms in providing their products with the highest nutritional content while preserving the integrity of the product.

Beverages containing alcohol base only on the fact that the product in aseptic packaging cannot be duplicated and are tamper-evident; this category has already begun to create a major favorable impression not only on the business but also in the minds of consumers.

End-users are more aware of the benefits of aseptic packs versus glass/PET bottles, which will undoubtedly have a spilling effect on other categories too.

The other is the dairy category, which has many by-products like ghee, buttermilk, lassi, drinking yoghurt, milkshakes, and flavored milk, among other white milk and milk products, have huge potential.

The FMCG and QSR industries have opted for sustainable practices and are innovating packaging solutions for the future while committing to their environmental responsibilities.

Food companies are stepping up their sustainability efforts, collaborating with their suppliers, and finetuning their business models. In fact, owing to the growth in consumer awareness and consciousness, sustainability practices for many companies and brands have transitioned from compliance to proactive interventions and tackling core issues, such as raising farmer livelihoods, and improving environmental impact,” said Rajeev Ranjan, chief operating officer – McDonald’s India North and East.

“Globally, McDonald’s expects to increase the use of Chain of Custody (CoC) certified fiber across the complete packaging portfolio and implement global and local solutions across the business to expand the reduction, reuse and recycling of guest packaging,” added Ranjan.

Speaking about McDonald’s efforts towards reducing packaging through design innovations, Ranjan said that McDonald’s follows a two-pronged approach towards packaging – i) how can it improve consumer experience and ii) move towards minimum/zero environmental impact. The process encompasses an innovation-driven approach to improve ease of use of the product by consumers, enhance/conserve product quality, reduce the use of packaging, switch to more sustainable materials and recycle. Ranjan said, “We work closely with our partners and suppliers in developing innovative alternate materials suitable to our needs. For example, molded fiber to replace bio-

polymer lids, heat seal lids, wraps to replace clamshells and reduce packaging waste. Our going ahead plans include more renewable fiber coatings that are easy to recycle, reduce plastic content and help meet the end-of-life requirements as per local legislation.”

Ranjan shared that all centrally sourced packaging at McDonald’s North and East India is Chain of Custody certified, with 100% of wood fiber coming from recycled sources or forests certified to the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) standard, a globally recognized standard for responsible forest management.

The FSC sets standards for and promotes environmentally responsible, socially beneficial and economically viable management of the world’s forests. Wood and paper products labeled as FSC certified are high standards products and the flow of the material can be monitored from the forest to the end product. This is known as the Chain of Custody.

“FSC certified fiber has been our primary material replacement for plastic packaging in the Indian market. Driven by our efforts to reduce conventional single-use plastics, supported by legislative pressure in certain areas, we have decided to transition away from plastic bags, plastic straws, plastic cutlery, and plastic cups,” Ranjan said.

Sustainability is on the agenda in most of business discussions. rchroma has launched Cartaseal VWAF, a new perfluorinated compound (PFC)-free and ammonia-free barrier coating for odorfree packaging applications. The company claims that the Cartaseal range offers barrier solutions that can be used to protect from grease, oils, water and water vapor in both packaging and food packaging applications such as pizza boxes, sandwich wedges, fresh vegetables, fast food service and general supermarket packaging.

Konica Minolta India appoints Katsuhisa Asari as managing director

onica Minolta on 6 March 2022 announced the appointment of Katsuhisa (Kurt) Asari as the new managing director taking over the baton from Tai Nizawa. Nizawa will transition to Konica Minolta Asia as the managing director to oversee the expansion of the brand’s portfolio across 14 markets from Singapore.

Asari has been associated with Konica Minolta India since 2018 as general manager of business planning. Aptar Activ-Blister solutions now available for manufacturing in EMEA

ptar CSP Technologies, part of Aptar Group, has announced a new manufacturing site able to produce its Activ-Blister solutions for oral slide dose drugs in Europe. The move is part of a key strategic effort to expand production of Activ-Blister technology globally and is the result of a 3-way collaboration between Aptar CSP, Uhlmann, and Ivers-Lee (a local contract manufacturing organization).

The collaboration consists of a fully automated Uhlmann blister machine validated to package oral solid dose drug products with Activ-Blister solutions heat-staked to the foil at a rate of up to 250 blisters per minute. The equipment is designed to integrate Activ-Blister technology into the blister cavity with precision placement. The equipment has been fullyvalidated and is in place at Ivers-Lee, a CMO capable of manufacturing Activ-Blister solutions from R&D to commercialization. A CMO in EMEA will support

regional customers and ensure speed-to-market.

Toppan acquires Thai packaging manufacturer

T

oppan entered into a share transfer agreement with Majend Makcs, a manufacturer and supplier of flexible packaging headquartered in Ayutthaya, Thailand, on 31 March 2022. Procedures to make Majend Makcs a consolidated subsidiary of Toppan are scheduled to be completed in May 2022.

The acquisition will enable Toppan to produce flexible packaging in Thailand for supply to markets in Europe, North America, and Southeast Asia.

In addition, sharing and combining Majend Makcs’s flexible packaging production technology and knowhow with Toppan’s converting technologies centered on GL Barrier, while collaborating on raw material sourcing, will drive enhanced productivity and a stable procurement system to strengthen price competitiveness. Majend Makcs will also function as a hub for the development and analysis of customer and technology trends in the global market.

Toppan has expanded its packaging business in Asia, including Indonesia, Thailand, and China, and is strengthening global production and sales with an eye on North America, Europe, and Latin America.

Toppan bolstered its capability to manufacture and supply transparent GL Barrier film for markets in North America and Europe with the launch of Toppan USA’s Georgia Plant in April 2016 and acquired the InterFlex Group, a packaging manufacturer with locations in

the United States and the United Kingdom, last year.

Most recently, Toppan has also made leading Indian film producer Max Speciality Films a consolidated subsidiary. z

Milliken expands capacity

M

illiken & Company is moving boldly to address anticipated market needs by expanding the facilities and capacity it acquired last March via its purchase of Germany’s Zebra-chem. Zebra-chem is a specialty compounder and chemicals company that makes additive and blowing agent concentrates for polyolefins, PVC and engineering thermoplastics.

The expansion will enable Milliken to boost production capacity for the acquired Bad Bentheim plant by 60% by year’s end. Milliken plans to install new manufacturing equipment and hire additional employees at the plant, which will be renamed Birch I. It also built a new warehouse, called Birch II, nearby. Milliken has been a trailblazer of sustainability for more than a century, and the company’s legacy of naming locations after trees is a tribute to that core company value.

solution portfolio,” said Milliken sales manager Tugce Asici-van Houselt. “These facilities will continue to serve the global market, with a focus on Europe, the Middle East and Africa.” The viscosity modifiers and performance modifiers made at the German plant increase melt flow of recycled PP resins with little to no loss of physical properties, enabling more recycled content to be used by the converters and brand owners without compromising overall performance.

sound insulation without compromising mechanical properties – are suitable for use in PVC, polyethylene, polypropylene and polystyrene. They can be used by converters in both extrusion and injection molding foam processing methods.

Milliken says it is on track to fully integrate the acquired operations during this calendar year. z
