CREATED IN 2007 BY PERFORMANCE MAKER ROBERT PACITTI, AND PRODUCED BY PACITTI COMPANY, SPILL IS RECOGNISED WORLDWIDE AS THE UK’S PREMIER ARTIST-LED FESTIVAL OF RADICAL LIVE WORK. SPILL QUESTIONS TRADITIONS OF ART AND SOCIETY. THE FESTIVAL CONTAINS WORK THAT MAY BE CHALLENGING TO SOME PEOPLE AND SPILL SEEKS TO NURTURE A CULTURE OF OPEN DISCUSSION AROUND THIS.

Welcome to SPILL 2014, an international festival of live performance, installation, film, discussions, and parties. Across 5 days we are bringing you over 100 uncompromising events, taking place at a range of great sites and venues across my beloved hometown of Ipswich.

In the programme are exciting SPILL Commissions, world premieres, and the SPILL National Platform which is generously supported by the Jerwood Charitable Foundation. You’ll find it happening all over Ipswich in theatres, galleries, civic buildings, cinemas, an old church, the police station, and even a nuclear bunker.

For this, its sixth edition, the festival presents artists hailing from England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, India, Iran, Israel, Italy, Japan, Romania, Serbia, Sweden, Thailand, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States of America.

The theme of this year's SPILL is Surrender – physical surrender, surrender to law, sex, power, death and dying, religion, economics, the impact of mass culture, and more. But are giving up, giving in, or simply going under really our only choices?

The turbulent times in which we live also demand resistance, and a strong spirit of defiance forges this year's SPILL. From the clarion call of Ray Lee's opening event ‘Siren’ to the charged howl of Scout Niblett, the smash of bodies against hard surfaces in the work of Sander & Bowers, to the charge of cultural trespass in that of both Sarah-Jane Norman and Keijaun Thomas, from the transformative brilliance of Ron Athey to the sheer guts of Mouse, this festival amplifies its contempt for our increasingly homogenised world.

As ‘fringe theatre’ becomes ever more mainstream, countless galleries continue to privilege predominantly white artists, and our bodies, civil liberties and incomes remain fiercely contested ground, SPILL seeks to agitate and find radical new alternatives for how we might move forward, together. I hope you find it ‘arresting’.

PACITTI COMPANY SPILL Festival is produced by Pacitti Company – a UK based arts organisation that creates and presents experimental performance work internationally.

Convened in 1990 by artist Robert Pacitti, the Company has spent the past 25 years making and touring an award-winning body of radical live performance work around the world, including On Landguard Point, a multi-platform mass-engagement project and feature film.

SPILL Festivals have taken place in London in 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2013.

In 2012 the Company also launched SPILL Festival in Ipswich, Suffolk.

Ipswich has also become the permanent home for the Company’s office and studio, housed in its Think Tank building, providing an open resource for ongoing public exploration into experimental arts practice.

Pacitti Company runs a rolling programme of events across the year out of the Think Tank, many of which help determine the direction of future SPILL Festivals.

Pacitti Company approaches performance making as investigation through research. The Company blends formal disciplines and techniques with social sciences and personal politic. This bespoke process enables Pacitti Company to serve diverse audiences with works of vital artistic and cultural value, whilst always remaining accessible.

Pacitti Company is an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation.

“A choir of rotating sirens, their individually strident voices congealing into a thick mutating chord that trapped listeners in its sticky flux”

Ray Lee is a composer, artist, and performer.

He was awarded British Composer of the Year for Sonic Art in 2012. Lee’s work investigates his fascination with the hidden world of electromagnetic radiation and in particular how sound can be used as evidence of invisible phenomena. He is interested in the way that science and philosophy represent the universe. He creates spinning, whirling, and pendulous sound installations that explore “circles of ether,” the invisible forces that surround us.

Beneath the surface A Descent into Glamour raises many issues, especially those around female invisibility, past and present notions about the quest for the “perfect female form” and the cost at which this is achieved.

Giovanna Maria Casetta is an Ipswich-based Artist working in performance, 8mm film and installation.

A constant theme running through her practice is the tension between the surface and what lies beneath. Giovanna’s recent work involves using physical and psychological forensic processes to determine how fragile and unique memory is and that the contact traces we leave behind can often betray us.

Since completing a BA and MRes in Theatre and Performance at the University of Plymouth, jamie lewis hadley has been working predominantly as a solo live artist, showing work in the UK, Europe, USA, Canada and South Africa.

What’s that flying across a field?

It’s just a piece of cloth that will outlive the blood you bleed.

His live art, body based performances and installations explore, both aesthetically and thematically: blood, deterioration, causality, endurance and pain. His current work is concerned with performing medicine and the history of medical bloodletting.

How can I possess such a cloth?

ALBION VOICE IS A CROSS MUSIC, TECHNOLOGY AND PERFORMANCE PRESENTATION. SONGS FROM THE ALBUM OF THE SAME NAME ARE PERFORMED WHILST BISHI IS IMMERSED IN VISUALS, PROJECTED OVER AND AROUND HER TO FORM AN ENVIRONMENT OF EVER SHIFTING LINES AND PERSPECTIVE.

Albion Voice is an exciting piece of music and modern theatre that explores the themes of National Identity. Bishi sings in English, Bengali, Bulgarian and Biblical Greek to reflect the Babylonian nature of London and all world cities today. From Bulgarian throat singing to the experimental work of Meredith Monk; Christian choral music to traditional Indian song this is an eclectic yet coherent work of style and grandeur.

An independent artist with a reputation for unique and ambitious work, Bishi has been described as the doyenne of hybrid music.

Trained in both Eastern and Western classical traditions she has had an unusual musical journey; working alongside sitar gurus, club producers, and children’s choirs.

The work of Bishi, and long-term collaborator Matthew Glamorre, is created for gallery, theatre and cinema spaces as well as concert halls. During their six year collaboration pieces have been presented in many international institutions and festivals including The Tate Modern, Hayward and National Galleries; The Pompidou Center and The Kunsthaus, Graz.

It’s probably not right to, and he doesn’t want to go to prison anyway, so he’s building a scale model and blowing that up instead. He’s inviting you to build and destroy models of the buildings and institutions you despise, and to join the explosive exploration of our hurt, our rage, and our struggle to figure out what to do about it. This is a performance about futility and urban planning, the limitations of art and activism, and discovering what the state can do to you. An invaluable manual for anyone intending to steal a job or two, invisible but omnipresent (just like the Eastern Europeans), it’s notoriously difficult to find though it regularly pops up without explanation. How and when it intends to educate the immigrants in the dark arts remains to be seen, but you better be on the lookout – otherwise you might unexpectedly find yourself sympathising with the enemy, or worse, living the multicultural nightmare.

Kate Mahony's work is ad-hoc, transitory and lo-fi in production. She devises works that respond directly to the exhibition or ‘gig’ at hand. Mahony's practice is fueled by a sculptural sensibility and interest in minimalism, reacting to the architecture of the site and everyday objects, treating this information as her elementary raw materials to make processdriven live works that are spontaneous and question her environment and situation.

The costume falls apart as the artist moves around the room and will constantly need to be reformed. The audience is not static, they can choose to experience the piece however they wish, or not at all – their potential rationalisation of a prolonged, apparently futile act directs their thoughts to that of sympathy for the artist, yet he remains dogged in his pursuit of gathering a costume made of memory. This persistent action is full of apparent contradictions; a repeated futile act, which is performed with purpose.

For 3 days, the artist will inhabit a room in the Think Tank where she will set about the task of hand-engraving a complete dictionary of the languages of the Gadigal and Cammeraygal people, the lost preColonial languages of the Sydney region, onto the prepared bones of sheep and beef cattle. The bones of these totemic beasts of European pastoralism are repurposed as vessels of tactile “memorial”, forming the basis of a layered and haunting reflection on the tension between western taxonomy and its modes of preservation, and the more visceral terrain of cultural grief.

In the field of neurology, scientists have identified that the human mind inserts information from the present into past memories. When recalled the memories become reinterpreted to adapt in an ever changing environment re-framing moments of a person’s life. Unlike a film which relays a recorded event as it was captured, the human memory edits information to present a story which fits into a person’s present reality. Recall is a one-to-one live mediated performance which invites you to create a new memory and re-write a moment in your personal history based on your own desires and imaginations.

Ria Hartley is an interdisciplinary solo performance artist and researcher based in Bristol, UK. The performance elements do not follow each other for a particular effect; instead, they await fractions of time when an intangible, illusory or tactile quality is superimposed on the experience, creating an imaginative multi-sensory space. A space where the personal experiences of the artists intersect with the history of the site of the performance.

/gorizazmarkaz/ is Pouya Ehsaei and Tara Fatehi Irani. The two started working together in 2010 when Pouya was 6ft 2’ and Tara’s eyes were blue.

The two were actively working in the underground performance scene, galleries and theatres of Iran as both musicians and live artists. They work with everyday-life events, found objects, memory, documents and socio-political experiences to create self-scrutinising autobiographical works with elements of black humour.

Within this transgressive and decadent space, notions of excess, warped desire, surreal feminine ‘otherness’ and abject sexuality are explored. Throughout the duration of this performative installation, these themes of seductive, abject, decadent desire, lead ultimately to outcomes of destruction, self annihilation, death and decay. Time, space and the senses become warped in this ‘House of Illusions’. This is a mirror world of false spectacle and masquerade, surrounding the hidden, abject, desiring ‘feminine’ objectified body.

Lauren Jane William utilises sculpture, costume based performance, installation and experimental video. In GastroPODa the artist seeks to activate a sense of bodily awareness through forms of worship, exercise, and defacement, by exposing and performing certain dominant personal compulsions that in the past have disrupted her perception of herself, for example; discipline and punishment; binge and purge; control and chaos. The word ‘POD’ may also reference Place of Death’, denoting the actions, within each marked situation during the performance, as a potential place for death. Death can occur in the subtle moments of the encounter between the planned and improvised actions, through the ephemeral nature of performing live art.

Debbie Guinnane is an Irish visual artist whose practice is focused on performance, improvisatory action, writing,and physical exercise. As a PhD candidate, she has recently been awarded a Research Studentship to undertake a programme of research on Improvisatory Action in Performance Art at Northumbria University, Newcastle. The performer is encased in an airtight latex structure and uses their own breathing to maintain a vacuum inside, making the latex suck tightly around their body. The vacuumed latex simultaneously sexualises and dehumanises the performer’s body, turning them into a living sculpture.

Acting out scenes from a fictional mythology the performer appears as a figure of carved stone but through the alabaster coloured latex they are clearly a living breathing human trapped inside.

Adam Electric explores fetish and mythology in his vacuumed latex performance/installations.

Developed from his costumes, Adam creates and performs in sculptural pieces that distort and restrain the human form. He blurs the line between the living performer and the inanimate materials as the two become interconnected.

Mehmet Sander, born in Germany in 1967, started dancing with Geyvan Mcmillen in Istanbul in 1984 and continued his education at the London Contemporary Dance School, California State University (Long Beach), Harvard University and American Dance Festival. He is inspired by physics, modernist architecture, painters such as Mondrian, and dancers such as Merce Cunningham. In 1990, he founded the Mehmet Sander Dance Company which toured the world.

He has presented recent commissioned works at Queen Mary University of London and Fierce Festival, and workshops at Tate Modern this year.

John Bowers works with modular synthesisers, home-brew electronics, and reconstructions of antique image and sound-making devices, alongside contemporary digital technology. He makes performance environments which combine sound, image and gesture at a fundamental material level. He has performed at festivals including Electropixel Nantes, Piksel Bergen, BEAM Uxbridge and SPILL Ipswich, and toured with the Rambert Dance Company performing David Tudor’s music to Merce Cunningham’s Rainforest. Amongst many collaborations, he works with Sten-Olof Hellström and in the noise drone band Tonesucker.

Animate Objects In Sonic Action is a world premiere of Sander and Bowers’ first collaboration, focusing on their common explorations of time, space and movement.

Nathaniel Mann is a singer, artist, folky and award winning composer. His diverse musical works occupy many realms have seen him wrangling pigeons, recording donkeys, casting bronze meat cleavers and working for Christian Dior.

He is one third of the UK finest avant-folk outfit Dead Rat Orchestra.

Scout Niblett, is an English singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Niblett cites among her influences a number of grunge period bands, including Mudhoney, Sonic Youth and Nirvana, and in particular the guitar of Kurt Cobain. In 2013, Niblett released her sixth studio album, It’s Up to Emma, which she mixed and produced.

“The Feeding Robot” is made by anti-cool using applied robotics technology, allowing it to become interactive and controlled by the audience. The audience is invited to select different local foods, and place them in the ‘feeding robot’. The robot forcibly brings the food to the artist’s mouth.

Ciara McKeon is a Dublin based artist and curator whose practice focuses on live performance art.

She has performed nationally across Ireland and is a member of pre form and Bbeyond, Belfast.

Improvisation and collaboration are integral to her practice and research. Recent works have looked in particular at embodied shame, loss and intimacy.

She also co-curates Unit1, an independent artistrun platform which supports the development of performance art in Ireland through exhibition of new work, symposia and archival projects.

Messianic Remains continues Athey’s exploration of the continuation of his own post-AIDS body. Previous installments were done in collaboration with the late Lawrence Steger, who died of AIDS during the midlate 1990s, and in the new millennium with London-based artist Dominic Johnson.

Between 1996 and 2007, performances took place in Glasgow, Chelsea Theatre in London, and at the funerals of Leigh Bowery in New York and Amsterdam. As in earlier works in the series, Athey rides the grandiose myth of enlightenment that only the face of death may reveal.

Mouse has worked internationally as a performance artist, model and writer. “The aim of the game is to shock and revolt,” she quotes. ‘I hate subtle or twee and I find it hard to do sexy. When asked what her influences are she replies “I’ve always been inspired by Disney, I do enjoy pantomime with its big wigs, and make up. I’m also a huge Carry On fan I love that classic English smut. I do find sex all rather silly really. But... my main passion is music.”It was the drum-n-bass, it made me do it...” she blames dance music for all her bad behavior. As a dolly collector she loves the smell of plastic too. On her rare days off she likes nothing better than to sit reading a book, maybe by Charles Bukowski or Guy de Maupassant, alone, drunk wrapped in a shower curtain.

Join us on Sunday for a very special session with artists from SPILL. Hear from the artists themselves about the work they have presented during the festival, and share your own responses. The SPILL Congregation is an open door critical feedback session between artists, industry experts and members of the public. It is intended to support artists by offering them constructive advice, and is also a way for you to share with festival organisers what you think of SPILL.

As the culmination of Bone Library, artist Sarah-Jane Norman invites you to a special ceremony. Following the live inscription of bones across SPILL Festival, the artist invites audiences to become temporary private trustees of the collection - individual bones will be relinquished into the temporary care of individual audience members, who agree to hold them until such time as the complete collection is recalled. This will take place in the context of a handover ceremony, conducted with the blessing of community Elders.
