SPILL Festival is produced by Pacitti Company – a UK based arts organisation that creates and presents experimental performance work internationally. Convened in 1990 by artist Robert Pacitti, the Company has spent the past two decades making and touring an award winning body of radical live performance works around the world.

SPILL Festivals have taken place in 2007, 2009 and 2011, all in London. Working in partnership with the Barbican, Southbank, National Theatre Studio, Soho Theatre and many others, Pacitti Company has presented hundreds of events by many of the world’s leading experimental theatre and performance makers.

In 2011 Pacitti Company launched On Landguard Point – the east of England’s winning entry to Artists taking the lead, a major project at the heart of London 2012, funded by Arts Council England. A mass public research into notions of ‘home’, On Landguard Point is a feature film with original music by composer Michael Nyman, featuring contributions from a cast of high profile performance makers as well as 1000 people from across the east of England. The project also generated a permanent exhibition called A People’s Peculiar, now housed at the Museum of East Anglian Life in Suffolk.

Socially engaged and process led, Pacitti Company approaches performance making as investigation through research. Steadfast in its commitment to rigour and craft, the Company blends formal disciplines and techniques with social sciences and personal politic. “This year SPILL launches in Ipswich, my home town. This exciting development sees the festival become an annual event alternating between London and Suffolk.

SPILL is opening a range of sites and venues in Ipswich that haven’t been used for live art before. The size of the town means these are all within walking distance of each other, and a truly packed programme means there’s a huge amount to see and do across the five days of SPILL. SPILL in Ipswich is only possible because local partners and supporters have made it so, including other organisations, local authorities and a range of great local businesses. At the festival’s core are over 60 uncompromising live works, many by artists selected from an open call-out generously supported by the Jerwood Charitable Foundation and in partnership with Live Art Development Agency for the SPILL National Platform. Prepare to be challenged and amazed.

This year SPILL has been curated around notions of proximity. What does it mean to place experimental performance in a town like Ipswich? Are we near to, or far from London or Europe? And as we launch on Halloween, what will it mean for audiences to encounter so much radical work in such a tightly packed five day hit? When the membrane between the living and the dead, the body and the spirit is at its thinnest. The only way to find out my friends is to get up close and personal. For sure it’s a risk, but one very worth taking.”

CHARGES – NO BOOKING FEES CHARGED for any type of transaction. A £1 charge for postage is made on tickets mailed in advance. Tickets booked five days of fewer before the performance will be held for you to collect on the door of the venue where the event you are attending is being held.

ON THE DAY – Any remaining tickets will be sold on the door, 30 minutes prior to each event.

REFUNDS AND EXCHANGING TICKETS – If you cannot use tickets you have already paid for, we can exchange them for another performance if you let New Wolsey Theatre know about it 48 hours prior to your preferred show.

JERWOOD DANCEHOUSE BOX OFFICE You can buy all your SPILL tickets via the SPILL website or from New Wolsey Theatre, but an allocation of tickets for Empress Stah in Space and Home Sweet Home can also be purchased from DanceEast (please see map on page 78). SPILL CENTRAL AND NATIONAL PLATFORM EVENTS Because of their nature some National Platform events have a limited capacity. These are clearly marked in the SPILL brochure and on the SPILL Festival website. To secure a place for these works you will need to register on the day of the event at SPILL Central (located in Ipswich Town Hall). Booking will be on a first come first served basis (from 10am). Please note that all SPILL Bumper Passes have priority booking attached.

SPILL FEASTS SPILL Feasts have restricted capacity and are only available with a reservation. Please book through New Wolsey Theatre, where you can also let us know any dietary requirements. A ticket for a SPILL Feast provides you with a hot meal – soft and alcoholic drinks will be available to buy separately.

HOME SWEET HOME Standard ‘plots’ of land for this event are £5. Upgrades to larger plots (and therefore bigger buildings) are available up to £10 onsite at Jerwood DanceHouse. How big will you go?

In an exploration of the role of audio technologies within the production and consumption of sound, reclaimed hi-fi speakers are transformed from versatile yet passive devices that enact sound dissociated from themselves and their surroundings into photospeakers. This produces a single tone in response to the light available within the environment.

Jack is a composer and artist interested in the role of sound within a multidisciplinary context and exploring technologies used in the creation and mediation of sound through bespoke digital and analogue systems.

He has created work for a variety of formats including recordings, performance and most recently gallery works whilst working within the sound artist’s collective thickear.

Jack has a BMus (Hons) in Popular Music from Goldsmiths and an MA in Sound Arts from the London College of Communication, University of the Arts London where he received a distinction.

A DIVINE TRAUMA NICOLA CANAVAN A Divine Trauma is a performance by Nicola Canavan which combines seemingly languid motion while seeking strength in femininity and purpose. For the duration of this action, the body follows its breath, precariously working its way forward with its heavily adorned flesh to its point of departure. The soul is cleansed as the carapace is released.

This piece of work defines a change in perception and direction through stillness and control.

Encompassing movement akin to the style of Butoh traditions; Canavan’s journey is simultaneously metaphorical and literal, with the inherent struggle subtly observable.

Canavan’s actions are played out in front of her audience who are invited into her intimate microcosm to bear witness to her transformation.

Nicola Canavan’s practice is rooted in action based performance and spans live work, documentations of its products and traces and the re-presentation of these in other forms. Canavan acknowledges and resists the sacred by entering the flesh and installing symbol through the manipulation of her body and through abstraction she pursues rituals that transcend the body.

EVENTS DAILY FROM 11AM DURING THE FESTIVAL SPILL Think Tank events spark public conversations and invite audience responses to the work on show. They also explore the festival’s theme of ‘Proximity’.

This year there are thematic salons and talks, a professional development strand aimed at artists, a hands-on SPILL Study Café courtesy of our friends at the Live Art Development Agency, a writer-in-residence, daily feasts, SPILL TV and much more. This edition of the festival also sees the launch of SPILL Radio, broadcasting daily from across the festival.

Many Think Tank events are free and are open to all. Find details of events in each day’s section of this brochure.

A NEW PERMANENT THINK TANK Pacitti Company has just opened a brand new building based resource for the ongoing public exploration and study of live performance and related fields.

The Think Tank is housed in the specially refurbished Victorian Wing of the Ipswich Museum and Art School Gallery. Across the next few years a rolling programme of local, national and international events will activate thinking and discussion around live art and performance, through conversation, salons, film screenings, coffee mornings, feasts and symposia led by experts and keen amateurs from across diverse fields. The Think Tank is also an incubator space and will enable UK and international artists to come and spend time in residence.

Presented in collaboration with the Live Art Development Agency The SPILL Study Café is a special pop-up version of the Live Art Development Agency’s internationally acclaimed Study Room (a free, open access Live Art research facility recently included in The Independent’s 50 Best Museums and Galleries). Here you can view a selection of Live Art publications and DVDs which have been specially curated for SPILL, whilst sipping the very best coffee the east of England has to offer, courtesy of Snobs Coffee. Studying never seemed so good.

home sweet home Estates will be inviting you to become a resident of Ipswich’s smallest suburb, a cardboard community of neat streets and magnolia houses just waiting to be turned into homes.

On arrival, you will select a plot of land and a flat-packed house to turn into your cardboard home. The development boasts a number of services to help settle you in – a notice board, a postal service and even a local radio station. How is our imagination triggered by the real world? Now you have the opportunity to see your journey with fresh eyes, through the memories, stories and aspirations of those who have taken the route before you.

11:18 is a theatre and performance company formed in London in 2011. They make performance that is inquisitive, engaging and bold, currently specialising in making audio and installation based performances for real train journeys.

MONUMENT ALAN DELMAR Monument is a durational performance that will develop over three hours. Alan Delmar has selected a series of objects which activate certain ideas when interacted with.

The piece will unfold in an erratic sequence of actions which will form a loose and open narrative of ideas relating to history, identity, endurance, religious belief and discovery.

Alan Delmar is a multidisciplinary artist but he is primarily a performance artist. His most recent work has been exploring the medium of performance as a process in itself, through crashing into walls, pressing his body into corners, and holding positions of endurance for as long as possible.

He attempts to make sense of his body in space and its potential power as a vehicle for self-expression.

In his art, he articulates more abstract human emotions through his body, going beyond words. The moment of encounter is vital to his practice; the volatile exchange of energy between the viewer and the performer, which can never be recreated in the same way.

Kick your heels / A woman is like a teabag she only knows her strength when put in hot water / Out of the frying pan and into the fire is a double screen projection consisting of three performances, Amy being the sole protagonist.

Amy’s projections act like a mental screen diffusing images, resembling how our dreams encroach on our consciousness. Infusing humorous and provocative qualities she explores how our unconscious can attribute to the condition of our behaviours.

Amy’s approach allows a fight/performance to move beyond documentation and into an intimate portrait of a woman’s struggle to overcome limitations, be they emotional, psychological or physical.

Performance is an integral part of Amy’s practice and she has just completed a BA (Hons) Fine Art degree at University Campus Suffolk. Exploring stereotypical metaphors about gender, Amy makes performances in response to a title, questioning the roles of gender and exploring physical and mental limits. Amy’s work encourages the viewer to examine our physical selves to be free of cultural and social taboos.

UNTITLED (EVENT TIME READING) GEORGIE GRACE untitled (event time reading) is a new work made for SPILL Festival. It experiments with staging film in an enclosed space, and takes as its starting point the construction of time in relation to language.

Georgie Grace’s work explores language as a means to challenge everyday consciousness, stimulating the imaginary possibilities of the present moment. Georgie’s practice reflects a background in philosophy and social anthropology and seeks to investigate what it might mean to be post-disciplinary.

Georgie’s current film work begins in sites where knowledge is made public through live speech, and considers speech as a form of performance publication.

Georgie transcribes this at the point of expression to capture material that is unfixed and transmitted only in a live moment. By intensifying and condensing this language she creates an experience of linguistic disruption and displacements in which the imagination can go to work.

Reynir Hutber’s projects explore and question recurrent concerns in the lineage of performance practice such as endurance, transcendence and complicity - in an era in which the authenticity of a visual document is increasingly hard to verify and appearances can be everything. As in certain works of Chris Burden and Marina Abramovic, Hutber seeks to pursue risk and to engage his audience in an ethical and aesthetic experiment. He stages open-ended scenarios whose implications are ultimately determined by the audience’s response and interaction.

In the past few years, Hutber has been engaged to develop and perform work across Europe. He was awarded the Catlin Art Prize in 2010 and recently took part in Fierce Festival 2012. For SPILL he will present new media installation, Critical Distance, a poetic exploration of absence that will hint at the imposition of barriers to both protect and contain: not only in art museums but also in other forms of institution.

EXPOSURES TOM WHITE Exposures aims to present contrasting therapy techniques offered to sufferers of social anxiety problems of the modern world, specifically that of spacial fears: claustrophobia and agoraphobia. The piece offers an insight into these disorders through unflinching documentation; sufferers try to conquer their fear by taking part in exposure therapy sessions by confronting the phobia head on. The installation will also present moving image projections of virtual reality exposure sessions as a contrasting technique that references a hyper-realist science fiction. The work highlights the often overlooked phobia that many people suffer from and questions whether a modern society has brought on such issues itself, in a sensitive enlightening way.

Tom White is a London based artist who works with various multi-media platforms: sound, experimental film and video, installation and live performance. His recorded work has even released regularly since 2009, including contributions to My Dance The Skull’s Voice Studies series and projects with Hackney Film Festival and LUX moving image. His work has been shown across the UK and North America.

Bedding In is a live durational performance. Exhibited beyond a red rope barrier, a woman lies in bed across three days. Bedding In emerges from the current welfare benefits overhaul, which threatens many with poverty and with a propagandist campaign that has seen disability hate crime leap by 50%.

The private self is neither beautiful nor grownup and I conceal it carefully. But the benefits system demands a reversal, my private self paraded to justify support. MISFORTUNE DOES NOT TRAVEL WITH A BELL LYNN LU Real-life stories of misfortunes that have befallen the public will be gathered during the festival, and folded into small origami packages in which is enclosed a single bell. These little bell story packages will then be secretly slipped into pockets or bags – throughout Ipswich town – to be discovered later. In an act of reverse pick-pocketing, anonymous stories of misfortunes will be planted across town.

Lynn Lu is a visual artist from Singapore. She received her BFA from Carnegie Mellon University, her MFA at the San Francisco Art Institute, completed a Doctoral program at Musashino Art University in Tokyo (ABD) and earned her PhD in Fine Arts at the University of Newcastle in Australia.

Lynn looks at the connection between experiential knowledge and the innate human capacity for empathy, in relation to a genre performance art she calls ‘gutty’. This gutty form of performance relies heavily on empathy to create meaning that is not merely conceptual but also affective and visceral.

5 actions / 5 texts / 5 songs is a work in development by John Boursnell. It uses repeated actions, lo-fi sounds, ball-bearing dropping and Polaroid picture-taking to create patchworks of quiet sounds and ‘concrète songs’. This performance features specially commissioned text by Faber poet Sam Riviere and is presented around a table in a small intimate space.

John Boursnell is a live artist working with small sounds and texts. He has presented work as part of Eastern Pavilions, in Colchester, Norwich and London. He is a member of Norwich based live art collective Other/Other/Other, and has received support for this project through Escalator Performing Arts and Arts Council England.

IN-BE-TWEEN ELENA MOLINARO When the human condition is conceived as fragmented and hunted by an unavoidable sense of solitude, the body becomes a site of transformation, a liminal space where the borders between in and out, subject and object are blurred.

In-be-tween investigates the relationship between absence and presence, the part and the whole, and takes Elena’s research questions on subjectivity and autobiography to create an installation performance where the body is exhibited either as a still image intersected by the fragmenting structure of the space, or as performing small acts of self-constitution.

Walking:Holding is a personalised walk through town, in the hands of a group of strangers.

Rosana Cade is a political artist based in Glasgow. Her solo practice is rooted in a queer discourse; she works with a range of people to create experiential performance that challenges perceptions of different sexualities and celebrates diversity.

She received the Athena Award via New Moves International for Walking:Holding in 2011, and undertook a six month mentorship with Oreet Ashery. She has recently shown work at Glasgay!, Arches Live, Edinburgh Fringe, You and Your Work 9, and Pink Fringe Culture Shock. She is the co-founder of Buzzcut Festival.

JARIDEH TANIA EL KHOURY A secret encounter in a café and a highly suspicious one-onone performance in which the performer and the audience member are partners in crime. It is inspired by crime films, the Metropolitan Police’s terrorism awareness strategy and operations made in the past by women militants in the Lebanese resistance.

Tania El Khoury is a live artist based in London and Beirut.

She creates immersive and challenging performances in which the audience is an active collaborator. Tania has performed in spaces ranging from the British Museum to a cable car and an old church once used as a military base during the Lebanese civil war. Her solo work has won awards in several international festivals. She is co-founder of Dictaphone Group, a collective using urban research and live art in order to reclaim public space. She is a Forest Fringe core artist.

I try to visualise or capture time within my practice, using actions and materials that will leave traces. I use materials that change themselves like a candle or ice or objects that can change other surfaces like lead or bleach. I will perform with these objects, often with minimal movement or repetitive actions, to create marks over time.

Emma Dixon is an interdisciplinary artist currently living in London. Her work is mainly but not exclusively performance art. She also works with photography, video, installation and mark making, but generally in conjunction with performance. She studied fine art at Winchester School of Art, graduating in 2011.

97 YEARS JO HELLIER What if we could untangle a confused mind?

In a performed installation, one performer delicately re-speaks through a series of conversations between her and her grandfather celebrating and mapping his ageing process. Around her a confused world is built. Live audio and video manipulation creates a complex, beautifully composed environment born out of simple conversation.

The link between the performer and grandfather is fragile; it can be distorted, paused or rewound. Things can be lost between here and there. What can be heard and what is missed? This is a tender, delicate investigation of mental health that invites an engaged audience to decipher a confused mind together with the performer.

Jo Hellier is a Bristol based artist who works with performance, video and audio to create immersive environments that she and the audience can engage with.

Her work takes a surreal stance to examine humanity and the everyday and explores what can be demonstrated about humanity through the lens of surrealism. She has presented work in the UK, Europe and Mexico.

For SPILL Festival I will explore ‘failure’: political, institutional and personal. Failure of institutions is commonly reported in the media, often the result of a catalogue of individual failures. Failure is everywhere all the time, hidden under the surface, it is only when failure is revealed that change can occur, yet in our society we generally try to hide any failure as awareness can affect trust and bring about weakness.

In an attempt to expand the role of artist, audience, curator, host and performer Tonya McMullan uses her practice to promote participation, seeking to actively involve groups of artists and the public, encouraging the viewer and participant to consider the confines of our environment.

Using a broad range of media including video sculpture and performative practice the attempt is to offer the viewer a clue or comment to the themes of the everyday and the trials, tribulations and struggles we all go through in our desires to win and achieve.

THE TEST OF INTELLIGENCE AMELIA BEAVIS-HARRISON The Test of Intelligence shows how for too long we have accepted intelligence as a hierarchical structure, allowed intelligence to inform our responses and demean those lesser informed. But is intelligence not just a social construct like that of religion, are we not just falling for the same power structures religion once imposed?

The performance takes two familiar situations and pushes them together; the IQ test and the lecture/sermon. The audience take part in both, physically undertaking an intelligence test with a difference, whilst enduring a monologue that questions the reality of intelligence.

In 2009, David Parkin suffered from clinical depression. As he recovered he taught himself how to play the piano and found himself writing an album about his breakdown. Taking to the stage with two talented multi-instrumentalists, David presents the album in his own inimitable, charismatic way.

Chatting between songs he tells us of the breakdown and of the love affair between man and piano that blossomed as he wrote the album. Expect beautiful music, scary music, funny music, a bass, a knife, a glockenspiel, the stars at night, two cellos and a black dog.

David is a former stand up and child star (Hope and Glory and toy adverts), so if you like John Boorman and Lego this could be for you.

THE WOMAN WHO WALKS ON KNIVES SEASON BUTLER The Woman Who Walks on Knives – a retelling of Hans Christian Anderson’s classic, The Little Sea-Maid – is a grim tale of sacrifice, transformation and how far we are willing to go for love. Starting from the giddy heights of infatuation and plunging to the bottom of the deepest sea, this is a woebegone story of a woman who braves her most primal fears and takes the ultimate risk. Even with Judy Garland, The Grateful Dead and Shakespeare along for the ride, this journey towards requited love may not reach its destination.

But this little mermaid is determined to get there, or die trying.

The hinge of the year between October and November is known by many names. Samhain, All Hallows, All Saints, All Souls, Halloween, Winternights in Norse religions, Día de los Muertos in Mexico. But there is a common sense of the veil between worlds thinning amidst remembrance, celebration and foreboding.

Building on their sonic art practice, J. M. Bowers and Ryan Jordan present a ritual of occult psychodramas to stroke, touch, caress, punch, scratch and gnaw at the veil.

Between the living and the dead, between body and machine, between muscle and music, between filth and foundation, between TV screen and skrying machine. Worn down interfaces. A sieve to seep through. Threadbare meshwork. The thinning veil where we and our doubles (automaton, effigy, photograph, phonograph, corpse, saint) get made, unmade and dance around.

J. M. Bowers works with homebrew electronics, reconstructions of antique technologies, and digital media to combine sound, image and embodied action as fundamental material energies. He has performed at international festivals including Electropixel Nantes, Piksel Bergen, and BEAM London, and has recently toured with the Rambert Dance Company performing David Tudor’s music to Merce Cunningham’s Rainforest. He co-founded the Onoma Research label, playing guitar in the noise band Tonesucker.

Ryan Jordan is an electronic artist working with selfmade instruments and tools for live performance focusing on the physical and material nature of experience. He has presented his work internationally in a wide range of venues from art and academic institutions to derelict warehouses and squats. He runs noise=noise, a noise research laboratory and live performance platform.

PAT IT AND PRICK IT AND MARK IT WITH ‘B’ SELINA THOMPSON The provocation for this piece was a statement made by Selina’s mother that eating, for her, was like a prison. That didn’t seem quite right, so Selina is going to make a dress.

She is going to make that dress out of cake. If you like, you’re welcome to come and eat some. Not too much though, or she’ll have nothing to wear.

Selina Thompson is a Sheffield based performance maker with a background in theatre, and she combines this with autobiographical stimuli to make performance and installations that are focused around the prospect of change. Her work focuses on creating something with an audience, a space for dialogue, in which participants contribute to the meaning and creation of the final piece.

Her work is hopeful, you are free to come and go as you wish, and she wants you to leave feeling optimistic.

In Tenant, the family home becomes the stage to re-enact a scripted dialogue that takes as a starting point a story about Mrs Schumacher who was the lodger of the artist’s grandfather in Berlin during the Second World War. She was a communist and helped Vladimir Lenin travel from Switzerland to Russia in 1917 after the February Revolution broke out. The relationship between language and physical movements explores roles that these two elements play in the creation of knowledge and social relations.

Grace Schwindt is a German artist based in London, working with live performance and film. She graduated from the Slade School of Fine Art in 2009 in London and participated in the Associate Artists Programme at LUX in 2010. Recent performances have been presented at South London Gallery and Oberhausen Short Film festival in Germany. Earlier this year, she completed the new film Tenant, which was produced as part of Film London Artists Image Network in London. This film was premiered in an exhibition at Collective Gallery in Edinburgh, where she also presented the new performance work Glass and Honey.

Everyone around me is detoxing. To shed weight, cleanse their liver and to generally feel a bit smug about being so self-disciplined. But they’re missing the most important organs of our being – the heart and mind.

“What we cannot speak about we must pass over in silence.” Ludwig Wittgenstein Language plays an important role in society; we communicate and express our thoughts through language, all reality is language and without language there is no reality. Diary is a live performance bringing private thoughts into the public space.

Ruth Flynn graduated with first class honours in Visual Art at Waterford Institute of Technology. Her work provides an insight into the mind through an investigation into emotions, movement, language, sound and the senses, by looking at depression, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Synesthesia and our overall behaviour in society. Her research brings her into the areas of Philosophy, Literature, Music and Art. It is exploration of the mind and human behaviour by undermining the viewer’s perception and bringing private thoughts into the public space. She uses her body as her material and art object, using her own personal experiences to express her ideas. Ruth’s performances are unique events; each one is different because of the connection that occurs between the performer and the viewer.

0 BEAN This work utilises the rhythm and repetition of voice and actions over duration to allow for the emergence of narrative. Taking performance as an act of inscription, writing the body in time and space; Bean scars the body as a mode of accessing altered states, a drawing of narrative and a twisting of the temporality of performance.

Contained by the secrecy of the night hours and the wearing of horse blinkers; the performance score involves actions of cutting, tattooing, writing and speaking. The work explores domestication and the feral through actions that open and restrict the body (such as fasting, cutting and urinating).

Bean’s artistic practice stems from obsessive, paranoid, scientific and anthropological research. Her work has been described as deliberately “accidental, scattered, scuffed, blurry and incomplete.” Oscillating the poles of violence/meditation, power/control, movement/home; it revels in the feral actions, inscriptions and fringe existence of the nomadic body. Bean is currently focused on the inscription of her flesh, as an act of both reclaiming and disowning her body as material.

Throughout history men have built walls to keep others out and worst still to lock others in. As the slow but observable shift of global power unfolds Adam Young asks us to consider our futures. A wall will be built, creating a windowless cage. Adam; living in the protest of occupation, will be unseen/unheard. Confronted with a wall; you are invited to share your thoughts, to tell of your fears, perhaps sing a song. You will be given the opportunity to take action; to open the cage. In such times of uncertainty it may often feel as though the walls are forever closing in. The question is, which side of the wall are we on?

Adam Young is cofounder of Indivisible and Artistic Director of (in)Xclusion festival of Live Art. Adam rarely performs a work more than once. His practice focuses on social engagement, efficacy of ritual and “the life in art and the art in life”.

This is a performance that wants to be a dance class (it wants to do things together, wear comfortable clothes, dance and prance around the room).

Most of all it wants to have fun: to move to its favourite songs, perform impromptu and inappropriate dances for its friends, and revel gloriously in the fantastic pleasure of a good handshake. Like your dad’s dancing, it can be a bit embarrassing, but it means well and no harm is ever done.

DANCE CLASS: a performance is an event in which all the participants watch and dance (even at the same time).

Please bear in mind that all should come in loose, comfortable clothing and be prepared to watch and dance in bare feet.

Gillie Kleiman is a dance maker and doer. Her work includes the production of performances, texts and events alone and with others.

In the next room begins to explore the emotional and physical experience of loss devised from starting points: the poem In the next room attributed to Henry Scott Holland and the Kubler-Ross model of five phases of grief. Victoria makes physical performance works that utilise the effect of action and task on the performer’s body to engage with the audience about primary emotions and states. Her work is visceral, immediate and honest – often being devised from personal experience.

Beginning making work in 2008 after participating in Finale with Pacitti Company, Victoria has shown work at a number of platforms including Poolside Emergency! in Liverpool and Fresh Air in London. In the next room is her third solo work.

LET’S BUILD A RUIN TIFFANY CHARRINGTON Let’s build a Ruin* is a map. It has fixed coordinates and milestones. There are routes through to find certain areas, and these tend to dissolve as soon as you follow them. You can follow a trail of plaster and then see that it has gone off course. No foundations have been laid in the structure of the map, so it will inevitably crumble. But you can wander across the ruins, imagining what might be built, or what may have existed there before. Only certain pathways are lit.

Endless efforts are made to rebuild and reshape and alter the course of the map. Observation is paramount, and perception is all you need for navigation. You will pass a few ghosts. The compass is a futile object.

Notebook is an act of translation. Not just a translation in language, but in sound. The artist’s body is transformed by taking a range of recorded, perceived or imagined physical gestures and situations as a score. A setting of fragments of text from the notebooks of Richard Foreman, Notebook is a series of sonic and physical imitations, expansions and phantom actions.

Neil Luck is a composer and performer living and working in London. His practice stems from a background in classical composition, but embraces elements of live art performance, visual art, and installation. His interests lie in the theatrical and physiological aspects of musical performance and how these can be engaged with to generate new modes of working as a solo performer, or with live musicians from a range of backgrounds and disciplines. Neil explores this through strategies including alternative approaches to scoring, the use of found recordings and field recordings in live situations, and the implication of his own body into performance as a score-object.

UNTITLED TIM BROMAGE This new multi-media performance draws upon the folklore and rituals of the Welsh boarders. Employing video, stage magic and spoken word, the result is a humorous and unsettling interpretation of the dying myth’s peculiar to England and Wales.

In this new work international innovators Forced Entertainment tangle and cross-cut multiple stories to make a compelling and unstable performance. From love and death to sex and laundry, from shipwrecks to falling snow, personal anecdotes rub shoulders with imaginary movies, and half-remembered novels bump into distorted fairytales.

Using a method as inventive as it is absurd, six performers create, collaborate, ambush and disrupt this epic saga that is resolutely too big for the stage. The result is comical, contradictory and poignant. EMPRESS STAH IN SPACE EMPRESS STAH A SPILL COMMISSION

Empress Stah in Space is part of an ongoing project with a long-term ambition; to create a performance in outer space.

As part of this research, Empress Stah has floated in ‘Zero Gravity’ and made a film as ‘The Stah Ship Trooper,’ strutting her stuff in the red light district of Amsterdam. The performance is set at the ‘Edge of chaos,’ and will attempt to create a lens to gaze into the essence of the human experience.

The narrative has been transcribed through trance and writing sessions between Empress Stah and seminal artist Ron Athey, which took place at Bentwaters in Suffolk, the site of the biggest purported UFO/Military incident in Europe.

Expect interactive 3D animations, video mapping projections, colour changing inflatables, couture costuming, gravity defying performance and an eclectic soundtrack with original music by electro clash super star, Peaches (The Teaches of Peaches, I Feel Cream).

MAN VS WOMAN ALEKS WOJTULEWICZ In this piece Aleks Wojtulewicz is playing around with the stereo types of the 1950’s housewife and the 1950’s working male in a modern time. It is a durational performance where the performer will try to rebuild a utility room and wash and dry his clothes. He will then break it down and rebuild somewhere else. It is a durational performance that is part of the bigger exploration into the forms that people take throughout their lives.

Aleks Wojtulewicz is a performance artist from the West Midlands. He studied performance studies at Aberystwyth University. He uses the physicality of his own body in space for his performances. He also works with the notions of understanding what makes a man a man, and what makes a woman a woman. Cross combining his masculinity with his feminine side helps him better portray what makes us who we are and how we have become the way we are. All of his research and work is being catalogued for a project with German based artist Lucia Reiner.

Madeleine Botet de Lacaze, “What really fascinates me is when one reaches a point in life when your mind says yes but your body doesn’t respond, when even though your mind says ‘yes do it’, the body stands paralysed. It’s an ephemeral limit, intangible, we don’t see it but it is there, inside. A personal limit, which draws us to repeat what we already know. However, once we pass that line and challenge that limit something changes within us.”

In an intimate climate a tension is created by Madeleine’s body and the image of her body, both creating a specific action. There is an emotional dialogue between the two (body and image) which connects with the audience in a shared live moment. This new work is definitely a piece to experience.

Madeleine Botet de Lacaze is an Argentinean artist based in London. Her background was in Film and Photography until she came to London to do a Masters Degree in Performance Art. Since then her work has changed completely as she started to perform, doing one to one performance pieces in which she engages with the audience in a mutual emotional transformation.

IF YOU WANT BIGGER YORKSHIRE PUDDINGS YOU NEED A BIGGER TIN LUCY HUTSON The title of this film comes from a long standing feud between my mum and my aunt over who could make the bigger and better Yorkshire puddings. For a long time my aunt was in the lead, until my mum riffled though her sister’s baking tins and realised all she needed was a bigger tin to level the playing field. I talked to my nana, my aunt, my mum, my sister and my cousins. I asked about their lives, their perspective of the role of women and their relationship with their mothers and daughters. This is my family and this is how they see their lives. There are contradictory views, beautiful synchronicity and raw teenage insight.

How to Avoid Making an Entrance of Yourself makes use of objects, items and memories from past performances to illustrate the performer’s thoughts on her current situation.

Uttered from within the wings, at the point of entry, this is an antidote to the bombastic introductory pre-ambles of Dermot O’Leary of Colchester on X-Factor before a ‘special guest’ performance. A series of unashamed ‘one-liner’ visual occurrences expose the self-doubt and vulnerability of the performer who considers the audiences’ perceptions of her endeavours as massively important.

Dot is a Visual Artist who makes mostly site-responsive live art and performance; she has a BA in Fine Art from Central Saint Martins (2003) and an MA in Visual Performance from Dartington College of Art (2007). Currently living in Norwich, Dot is a member of LACE (Live Art Collective East) and co-founder of the Norwich-based Live Art collective Other/Other/Other.

A VOLCANO PERPETUALLY ERASES ITS OWN HISTORY TOUCH AND MEET A pilot is grounded in Iceland during the 2010 eruption of Eyjafjallajökull. Whilst thousands take unplanned extra holidays he searches for a release akin to ash clouds and geologic activity. Tension rises and falls, a bad comedian attempts to break the ice, balloons are popped and karaoke is sung. And at the end of it all, do we feel anything more than empty?

A volcano perpetually erases its own history is a work in development, a pseudo-scientific exploration of eruption: the build-up and release of tension and the relationship between humans and rocks.

Touch and Meet is an ongoing collaboration between Rachael Clerke and Josephine Joy. They make challenging yet accessible devised theatre and performance that responds to the world around them. They are interested in exhausting one subject rather than touching on thousands.

I will plaster set honey to the wall with my bare hands. I will apply myself and the honey to the wall. Smear. Cover.

Endure. Silence is imperative. The weight of the honey will push itself down the walls, seep onto the floor and begin to pool. The honey will move as if alive. The honey is the body.

Quiet. Listen. Take heed in the movement. This is all there is.

Amy Brooks is a performance artist based in Belfast. She studied her BA in Fine and Applied Art at the University of Ulster, Belfast, Northern Ireland 2008-11. After graduating from Sculpture with a first class honours, Brooks and two other graduates formed a collective, Pollen. Pollen is now a studio and gallery space based on Queen Street in Belfast.

PUNCTUM – AND SHE’D FALL INTO MY ARMS ANTONIA WILSON Punctum – And She’d Fall Into My Arms is a durational performance installation concerning the lingering unfinished business of desire and the ‘leaky’ practice of minor wounding. A frightful intimacy, a delicate rupturing, a catastrophic tenderness.

Antonia Wilson is a UK based artist producing a diverse range of visual and performance work, often interdisciplinary in nature and mixing creative practices. Recent work has included live art and performance, particularly durational work, photography, installation and sound, experimenting with a variety of influences from disciplines including histories of fine art, psychology and biology.

Current research interests have centred on concepts of desire, intimacy and death, and how these might be represented or negotiated by art practices. Through interrogating and engaging with these themes her work gestures towards questioning whether the experience of the intimate moment and the horrific encounter is often one and the same scene. Her practice often seeks to explore aesthetic concerns with ‘the image’, whether grotesque, uncanny, sublime, beautiful, where one might seek to find, or to escape, annihilation, or oblivion.

A Cure for Ageing is a piece about being young and foolish, and becoming old and wise. Or it is a piece about being young and wise, and becoming old and foolish. Or vice versa. It asks how we can talk more honestly and openly about ageing, and how this can prepare us better for the process. It is about the physical, mental, and emotional experience of getting older. About how much we are or are not defined by what age we are, about numbers, years, the passing of time, and the fact that we have all, already, started dying.

Ira Brand is a performance-maker and writer, working in theatre and live art. She is a solo artist and core member of contemporary performance groups Tinned Fingers and Antique Women. She regularly also works in collaboration with other companies and artists, which have included Made In China Theatre, Living Structures, Kings of England and Andy Field.

AOB ITEM 1 SARA DAVIES In AOB Item 1 we see a woman on the edge look over the edge, take a deep breath and jump. Exploring the notions of loss, fear, triumph and identity this sculptural performance requires that the audience become custodians of those fragile commodities, so that this moment is never forgotten.

Sara Davies is an artist, mother and feminist (although not always in that order). She is concerned with the fragmentation and eventual transformation of self, specifically (although not exclusively) through her experiences of postnatal depression and motherhood.

Informed by her background in live and fine art, as well as traditional theatre, Sara’s practice seeks to explode the myths surrounding “The Most Important Job in the World” through a series of durational images that are disconnected from each other and yet intrinsically linked. The first of these images, AOB Item 1 is a compelling performance that is still evolving; shown to the public for the first time as part of the SPILL National Platform.

HardBoiled? – Exposing Masculinity is a confrontation of masculine personas, the body’s interaction with the strong yet fallible materials of rock and metal creates a narrative portraying the versatility of masculine identities. This can be seen to take place between the body’s resilience and vulnerability, and its success and failures within the work.

With a BA Honours in Drama from Queen Mary University of London, Live Artist Paul Easterbrook returned to the university and has recently completed an MA in Theatre and Performance. His work is an exploration into the cultural politics of the body in relation to masculinity, male identity and class. By exploring his own perception of self the artist attempts to interpret the many perceptions of masculinity he sees, and portrays within a varied social existence. The artist engages with materials that signify notions of traditional masculinity. The work then attempts to scrutinise these materials in a way that may highlight their strengths and fallibility, as the materials in turn allow the artist to investigate his own physical thresholds.

Join Louise and take part in her daily challenge – to hold someone’s hand for 30 minutes. Louise is doing this every day in 2012 and for SPILL she will gently guide you through a dangerous theatrical exploration of Britain’s seemingly touch-deprived culture.

A Glasgow based performance artist Louise has created bespoke performances and education packages for a multitude of spaces including Glasgow’s Barrowlands, the Tall Ship and The Tramway. She began working in 2009 as a performer with Nic Green on Part Two of her award winning production Trilogy which in 2010 toured to BAC, The Barbican, The Dublin Fringe festival and the Belfast International Festival. Louise is passionate about performance as a tool for social exploration and change, enabling us to invest in our collective and individual culture.

Step outside ourselves for a mere instant, and we verge on death’s dominion”. (Kundera, Testaments Betrayed) Zero-Tau is composed from ForTune, Georgia Kalogeropoulou and Maria Sideri. Their collaboration lies on a mixed media performance that explores the idea of Stasis as a metaphor of liveness and presence.

Georgia Kalogeropoulou is a researcher in psychoanalysis and philosophy and musician based in London. Her research centers on the construction of time as repetition aiming to explore music as the quest of a living hermeneutics.

Maria Sideri is a performance maker based in London.

With a background in anthropology her research is focused on movement, gesture and voice in different temporal and spatial boundaries.

ForTune is a musician and composer playing piano and violin with extensive studies in music theory, counterpoint and classical and contemporary composition.

LEFTOVERS FIGS IN WIGS This show is made from leftovers. It is compiled from the scraps that our previous performances could not fit in. They were full, stuffed with ideas, dances and cake. We wanted to pile everything on one plate, force it down. But good taste is about balance, and when things began to interfere with the meat of our show, some juicy bits had to get the chop.

But we hate to see anything go to waste.

Rather than leave everything to rot we did what Nigella does: put it in the freezer. Now, hungry for more, Figs in Wigs are going to thaw out these ideas, sift through the wreckage and rustle up something tasty. Leftovers is an experiment to see if we can transform our waste into something worthwhile, after all, one man’s trash is another man’s breakfast.

Figs in Wigs are a London based performance troupe with a passion for fashionable fruit. Their work reworks everyday words and objects into something bizarrely mundane. Their blood type is jam.

On Landguard Point is a film about home. Inspired by the histories and culture of the East of England, On Landguard Point exists at an intersection between live performance, community and cinema – where local people and places really do become the stars of the show. Made by Pacitti Company, the film stars hundreds of people from across the East of England, and features work by internationally acclaimed artists such as Kira O’Reilly, Julia Bardsley, Rajni Shah, Harminder Judge and more.

On Landguard Point is a non-narrative film built through poetry, patchwork, maps and slips of story. Woven together these forms accumulate ideas around what home means.

The content of the film features some aspects of a series of community events that took place across 2011 and 2012.

One of these was a region wide call out for A People’s Peculiar. Of the many entries, 205 were turned into symbols, offering a visual lexicon of people’s shared stories, memories and local knowledge. Many of these symbols appear throughout the film.

Led by Wendy Bevan’s hauntingly beautiful voice, ‘a stunning performance that is pure Dietrich; a voice made of jagged highs and a spine-caressing baritone’. Her otherworldly performance as a statuesque, ghostly femme fatale is hypnotic and exposes a deep, lonely soul, and a poisoned heart which she shares with the audience; her performance vacillating from serenity to calm, brutal to beautiful, reflecting the cutting dark side of human desire.

Bevan and her band create a world of ambiguity that sends a shiver to the core.

Temper Temper’s soundscape comes in torrential waves, exploring a memorable journey into a David Lynch-like world of deep emotion, rich drama and superb music.

GETTING TO SPILL By train Ipswich train station is based five minutes away from the town centre. Greater Anglia trains run to Ipswich from London Liverpool Street every 28-30 minutes during the day. The journey time ranges from 1 hour 7 minutes to 1 hour 23 minutes. There are trains to Cambridge every hour. Journey time 1 hour 21 minutes. There are also trains to Norwich every 30 minutes. Journey time 41 minutes.
