Welcome to SPILL, an adventurous international festival of contemporary arts, lovingly crafted in Ipswich. For 11 days this autumn we are presenting a packed programme at sites across the town. You don’t have to be an art expert to join in and everyone is welcome.

During SPILL you can experience over 100 different artworks, both indoors and out, many of them taking place multiple times. The festival includes live performances, sound and music, film and video, plus projects exploring heritage and place, all made by some of the world’s most exciting contemporary artists. About a third of the festival is totally free. A third of events are a fiver and our top price tickets are just £10. SPILL Passes offer great ways to save across the festival and with events for kids and families, plus a late‑night programme for adults, there really is something for everyone. The theme of this year’s festival is Time and we are honouring the past with a programme of artworks marking 100 years since the end of the First World War. Using audio technology originally employed in war and emergencies, and the voices of women and girls, Clarion Call will ring out twice daily from Ipswich Waterfront and beyond. You are unlikely to have experienced anything quite like it before.

Handmade banners, stitched by women across the UK for Artichoke’s wonderful Processions project, marking 100 years since some women got the vote, form an exhibition trail across the town (page 16). Turned Red Earth pairs nature writing contained in letters and diaries of WW1 servicemen with photographs of uprooted flower specimens, creating disarmingly moving images (page 18).

the festival, brings condensed contemporary versions of all 36 Shakespeare plays to Ipswich Town Hall. Comically and intimately retold using everyday objects as characters on an ordinary table top, this huge performance undertaking by one of the UK’s foremost theatre companies is simply unmissable (page 40).
Imagined Touch, a multi‑sensory Australian live art project, explores the world of Deafblind culture (page 66). And get the kids in your life to tell us what play structures to build in Block Magic (page 20).
The SPILL OPEN presents 20 works by early makers with something meaningful to say. Supported by the Jerwood Charitable Foundation and selected from 688 international applications, the OPEN is a chance to check out the future, today.

Across the festival you are invited to make an offering of written bad news to our Pyre Parade effigy, housed in La Tour Cycle Café at Ipswich Waterfront. Then on Saturday 3 November join us for The Pyre Parade (page 84), as our effigy makes its way noisily through town to Christchurch Park where – full of everyone’s bad news – it will be engulfed in flames, burning up the darkness and clearing space before winter. May it bring us all peace and wellbeing. Our time is most certainly now.

SPILL Central is a special festival takeover of the former Wharf next to Ipswich Town Hall. This is our festival info point, box office, café bar and place to catch the very best alternative music, cabaret, gigs and parties SPILL has to offer.
Created in 2007, SPILL Festival is produced in‑house as an initiative of Pacitti Company — an arts charity based in the Suffolk county town of Ipswich. Alongside SPILL we also make our own art projects and run a year‑round programme of events, courses, groups and classes at our Think Tank studio building, which is also available for hire.
SPILL questions traditions of art and society and contains work some people may find challenging. We seek a culture of open discussion around this, so let’s talk it out — together we can change the world. More details at pacitticompany.com 5
ACCESS Access is something we take very seriously as makers of SPILL Festival and we work year‑round on how to best serve the diverse needs of all our guests and visitors. Our starting point is an inclusive offer — there are no special exceptions. We don’t believe that access should be something additional or have to be requested. Every venue in SPILL 2018 has step‑free access or easy‑to‑use lifts to relevant floors. About one third of all events are FREE, and the most expensive ticket is just £10. Day Passes, Weekend Passes and All‑Seeing Passes offer the best value for those wanting to see lots across the festival. We aspire to the Plain English Campaign when using words to publicise the festival. We write with you, the reader, in mind. We champion artists describing their work in their own words. If you have any queries, or simply can’t get the measure of something, please telephone or email us and we will do our best to describe whatever it is in a different way. This year, in addition to providing BSL interpretation at several events, we’re creating opportunities for BSL users to chat about various parts of the programme. SCU LLIN + SU PPLE FOX (AUSTR ALIA) WORLD PREMIERE Over the 11 days of SPILL Festival, this large-scale outdoor sonic artwork will ring out from Ipswich Waterfront into the town’s public spaces at dusk. The voices of women and girls call to the setting sun in daily incantations, broadcast with audio technology employed for emergency and control, repurposed as a mechanism for public ritual. Devised by Melbourne based artists Byron J. Scullin, Hannah Fox and Thomas Supple, and part of 14–18 NOW, the UK’s arts programme for the First World War centenary, Clarion Call stands as an ephemeral monument to the aftermath of wars past, present and future. But instead of unifying us in grief, a composition of reimagined melodies provide a moment in time for a community to come together in hope and reflection.

ARTI CH O K E (U K) PROCESSIONS was a mass participation artwork to celebrate 100 years of votes for women. It was an open invitation to every woman and girl across the UK to get involved by being present on Sunday 10 June in one of the four UK capitals: Belfast, Cardiff, Edinburgh or London; inspired by the great processions of the suffragettes and suffragists in the years leading up to 1918, who marched to demand the vote. In this special exhibition for SPILL, 100 banners created around the UK for PROCESSIONS will be shown as a trail at various locations across Ipswich. Find a route planner on the SPILL website. Artichoke is a leading arts charity that works with artists to invade public spaces and put on extraordinary and ambitious events that live in the memory forever.

TURNED RED EARTH LU CY GREEVES (U K) “The grass is about a foot long and thousands of poppies are swaying along the lips of the trench.” Fleeting moments of beauty, seen through the eyes of soldiers from both sides, bring the wholesale destruction of WW1 into poignant focus. Turned Red Earth is a book and a series of sited texts that weave together words from war diaries alongside exquisite portraits of local wildflowers to create small, intimate points of connection that collapse the distance of a century. At SPILL, large format prints of Turned Red Earth will appear in various locations on Ipswich Waterfront. Lucy Greeves is a writer based in North Essex. Her work has ranged in subject matter from the First World War to her childhood in Kenya; she has also written extensively on the practice and philosophy of yoga and meditation. Her first book, The Naked Jape, established her as an authority on the origins and meaning of comedy. She is currently writing a book reflecting on the lives and deaths of missionary wives and mothers in 19th Century Africa. Thu 25 – Sun 4 Ipswich Waterfront

HERITAGE + PLACE
ON/OFF is made up of architects and designers based in Berlin. Since 2012 they have been exploring different fields, including media art, scenographic design, experimental housing, play and furniture design. As a network they draw on a range of different skills, working collaboratively to initiate new experiments with mobile structures, film and projection, public workshops and writing. They set out to challenge established modes of practice and to engage with people’s experience of the city through projects in public space.
S O U N D + M U S I C
The device amplifies their gestures and expressions empowering people to play and test their everyday environments and routines. The first prototype was constructed with limited resources, improvising with a used shopping trolley as the main body, borrowed car batteries, projector and laptop, fixed in place with cable ties, and recycled timber.
O N S C R EEN
Deployed in public space, the Kopf Kino captures and projects actions at street level onto surrounding façades and buildings in the area, turning unexpecting passers‑by into performers.

PACIT TI COM PANY + ED R M (U K) Set on Ipswich Waterfront, Block Magic is a constantly shifting playground structure made from coloured crates. Determined by local children, using dedicated software to tell us what they want, imaginative play spaces are designed then built daily as physical structures for kids to play in. The project is a collaboration between Pacitti Company and local architectal practice EDRM. Block Magic prioritises the wants of children, encouraging young people to work together on design and build, enabling teamwork and confidence. It foregrounds kids in charge, creative imagination and young folk building their own physical and social structures.

JAD E MO NTSERR AT (U K) Revue is a choreographed, repeated routine performed naked, currently for 24 hours set to Cab Calloway’s popular Cotton Club track “Pickin’ up the Cabbage”. Revue will be filtered digitally through institutions in cities throughout the world where Josephine Baker performed, and then back into the public domain. The performance is intent on reimagining the representation of black bodies, with an emphasis on protection, care, positioning and preservation. Jade Montserrat works at the intersection of art and activism through drawing, painting, performance, film, installation, sculpture, print and text. The artist interrogates these mediums with the aim to expose gaps in our visual and linguistic habits.

A M ER AH SALEH (U K/YE M EN) I Am Not From Here is an exploration of home, identity, womanhood and the intricate complications between second generation British citizens. Born and bred in Birmingham, Amerah always identified as British, only ever visiting Yemen once before moving over there to live in 2002. Language, culture and family all look different outside the West. Arriving back in the UK unexpectedly in 2004 Amerah found it hard to fit back into a fast‑moving city like Birmingham. In this piece, Amerah explores relationships, the culture of identifying with anything other than ‘wife’ or ‘mother’, and being an Arab woman finding new ways to raise both her own voice and the voices of others.. Amerah Saleh is a spoken word artist born and bred in Birmingham. Her Muslim Yemeni roots give her space to get lost and found on multiple occasions between identity.

The performance’s specially Suffolk‑tinged subjects include; the earthen haunt of M.R. James, temperance song via Fred Whiting, John Wilbye’s madrigals, and the spectral visitations of the Icklingham highwayman. Through a performance of song, spoken word, chant and improvisation, the band transcends these mortal bonds.

A post‑modern jumble. Just as ancient ideas met science fiction in the Dogon text of ‘The Pale Fox’ by M. Griaule and G. Dieterlen, Bare Bones take collective memory and filter it through their own lens. Bare Bones are an experimental drone duo that embrace the physicality of sound. Using improvisatory techniques, ethnographic field recordings, and the sonic spaces of Dub, they create ritualistic, nuanced soundscapes. Effectively pulling the listener into a netherworld of stretched time. Through the use of repetition and loops they explore hypnagogic states. Primitive percussion, bowed instruments and the human voice lay against analogue tape machines and electronics.

FR AN CESCA STEELE (U K) Between 2008 – 2012 Francesca engaged in a deeply manipulative and transformative process of bodybuilding as her daily performance practice. During this her body became a document of work; she became the material. Recount marks a re‑authoring, a point of separation, part of a process of undoing. Using footage filmed by documentary‑maker Mark Kidel, Recount draws a digital cutup retelling, and asks for an ‘active’ viewer to engage. Stress, silences and cigarettes create new conversations whilst commenting on the past. Francesca Steele’s live art practice has recently become focused on writing; using autobiographical mining and experimental writing techniques she creates work that sits between fact and fiction, storytelling, knowing and unknowing. Having exhibited in the UK and internationally, her work also features on internet sites like ‘girls with muscle’ and persists outside the traditional white box space.

M EGAN CL ARK E (U K) INTERNAL journeys into the microscopic world of the human body, a multi‑sensory experience through a landscape of textile sculptures. Explore the human form from the inside out as you enter this intimate installation that aims to remind you of the beauty of the body, the regeneration and degeneration of our internal systems and our body and mind connections. This live durational performance installation invites the audience to journey through the space and consider the constancy of their internal systems in everyday existence. Megan graduated from Brighton University in 2015 with a BA (Hons) in Performance and Visual Art (Theatre). Her practice arose from research into multidiscipline creative learning, discussing the work of movement practitioners and cognitive neuroscientists. She continues to examine an interdisciplinary collaboration that can enhance our education system. DAVID H OYLE (U K) Diamond is a bitter sweet journey into LGBT liberation from 1957 to current day events through the thrilling biography of David Hoyle. Weaving together intimate personal experience and public events, Diamond charts David’s rise from gay adolescent in Blackpool to famous Channel 4 Anti‑drag queer cult phenomenon. Reclaiming historical moments and reflecting on the lives of prominent gay figures such as Alan Turing, and more recent LGBT political activists, Diamond revisits this challenging history and on‑going struggle for equality.
David Hoyle took live and television audiences into strange and unsettling new regions of fun as ‘anti‑drag queen’ the Divine David in the 1990s. After a postmillennium hiatus, he returned to the stage under his own name, typically delivering electrifying multimedia shows that blend acerbic wit, queer politics, avant‑garde style and old‑school stagecraft. As well as regular runs at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern and Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club, Hoyle has performed at Soho Theatre, The Southbank Centre, Sydney Opera House, Battersea Arts Centre, Tate Modern, Chelsea Theatre and the National Portrait Gallery.

M ARTIN G REEN AN D LEPUS PRO D U CTI O NS (FR AN CE, U K, USA) Before Martin Green knew what sex was, and before he knew that cuckoos don’t build nests, he knew the song the Cuckoo’s Nest. Whilst looking at various bits of folk song recently, a version of this song appeared in his YouTube sidebar. He stuck it on out of nostalgia and one of the comments below was “we shouldn’t be singing these songs any more”. And thus started a trail of thought about folk song, sex and the rather disturbing nature of the cuckoo.
Martin is a musician and composer, best known as accordionist in the award winning folk trio Lau (Best Group, BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, four times). He won a Paul Hamlyn Foundation Award for Artists in 2014. His music commissions have included ‘Albatross’ at Glastonbury Festival’s Theatre Field 2004, Crows’ Bones for Opera North 2012/13 and Seiche for the Kronos Quartet 2016. His own project, Flit, was commissioned by the Barbican and Edinburgh International Festival and was seen by 7,800 people across the UK and in Australia in 2016.
Combining folk music, dance, song and film animation the initial experiments on the Cuckoo project have been thrilling, daring and sometimes hair‑raising. Now, as the next stage in the journey, Into The Cuckoo’s Nest will further develop across SPILL 2018. Fri 26 is a live gig featuring very special guest performers, and Sun 28 – Tue 30 will comprise of a series of drop-in sessions. As a piece that relies on audience interaction, though debate, and communal ritual, this is a prime opportunity to help develop a show with the artists.

Mike Challis is a freelance sound artist, maker and educator. His work often engages with the sounds of nature. His SoundHide for SPILL 2016 created a den in a straw lined hut where the audience could relax and listen to the sounds of nature from Ipswich’s green spaces.

Going out into the parks silently and sensing nature is not something that most people do. We tend to go out for a walk with friends and talk as we walk. On this experience you will be encouraged to collectively sit still in nature and not even move. G IOVAN NA M ARIA CASE T TA (U K) Earth Work is an exploration of the private rituals that the artist has devised to see her through the dark times, connecting the disconnect, attempting to stay grounded in a world which appears timeless, distant, surreal, fleeting and overwhelming. The ritual involves working with earth, three actions that portray an urgency to be connected and reconnected in order to keep the psyche and caporal whole. The ritual is repeated over and over again until the point of exhaustion.Then and only then can a feeling of peace and calm can be restored. Earth Work was originally conceived and performed for camera working as a guest artist with Pacitti Company on the film installation Moving Mountains 2015. Giovanna Maria Casetta is an Ipswich based artist and educator whose practice spans twenty years working in performance, 8mm film and installation. A constant theme running through her practice is the tension between the surface and what lies beneath. The fragility of the physical and psychological self and how our identity is compromised through societies unrealistic expectations of what we should be.

Using dance, bass lines and film this 50 minute performance embodies the tensions between desire, violence and freedom in an urban environment. Claudia Palazzo is an artist and dancer working across and at the intersections of dance, performance art, alternative cabaret and film using her body as a responsive site to her environment. Her work exists somewhere between the nightclub, gallery and street and focuses on the live experience as a place for highly charged connections. Claudia is often pre‑occupied with, how to move through, deal with and oppose systems of violence.

Born in Taipei, 1983, Yao Liao first studied technical theatre and started off as a designer in the industry. At 28, he moved to London and was inspired by cultural diversity and various artistic expressions. His recent research looks into the prevailing trend in theatre and performance art, questioning the truth behind fabricated meaning that deprives art of authenticity. Based in Berlin, he is now working on different projects, trying his best, to enjoy the art of life.

Walking the tightrope between his public and private personas, Le Gateau Chocolat explores the people, the moments, the relationships, the art that have come to shape us and the ideals we aspire to.
Le Gateau Chocolat is an Opera singing British boy with a law degree and a big heart who also likes to dabble in the dark arts of pop, jazz and musical theatre. This internationally renowned cabaret star has performed in Olivier‑nominated and award‑winning shows such as Porgy and Bess and La Soiree, delighted the Queen as part of her Jubilee Flotilla and travelled the globe with his own acclaimed solo productions including Le Gateau Chocolat, I Heart Chocolat, In Drag, Black, and Duckie.
Re‑imagined especially for SPILL Festival, and accompanied by a seven‑piece band for the first time, Gateau unashamedly weaves through an eclectic mix of music; pop, opera, rock; Kate Bush, Whitney, Meatloaf, Pavarotti … investigating his own objects of worship through the songs and music of his personal icons.
Most recently, he has appeared in Rufus Norris + Simon Stephen’s reimagining of Threepenny Opera at the National Theatre, and Twelfth Night at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre.

During this tour, he met film students, received national awards, launched university projects, and described the extraordinary benefits for creativity and peace to be gained by transcending thought with Transcendental Meditation, introduced to the world by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.

KERNSCHMEL ZE II EVE LIBERTIN E + CHARLES WEBBER + PEN NY RI M BAU D (U K) This concert, developed by two members of Crass, is the live manifestation of an ongoing series of performances and recordings. Initiated by Rimbaud, the series pits performers against a visceral composition created and recorded by himself employing only his voice as a sound source. This has led to two collaborations with Webber. The second of these, Kernschmelze II, released to critical acclaim on Cold Spring Records, sees Libertine immersed in a maelstrom of processing, electronics and percussion. This performance represents a structured improvisation based on this recording. Eve Libertine, former vocalist with Crass, subsequently works across improvisation and contemporary vocal practice. “The voice comes straight from the core, that’s why I love it as my instrument.” Charles Webber, an electronic artist, works across the disciplines of electronic music and experimental film. English Heretic is a multimedia project, in operation since 2003. Musically diverse, drawing inspiration from psychedelic folk, ritual, ethnographic recordings, electronica, TV documentaries, field recordings and other mashup genres, English Heretic’s sound moves from the sinister to the absurd with the troubling ease.soap

First released in 2005, this release paved the way for a resurgence of interest in Folk Horror. A paranoid parallax view of the tragic demise of Suffolk film director Michael Reeves, following his making of Witchfinder General, “Temple of Remembrance” uses field recordings from the imagined gibbets of Kersey to the crematorium at Ipswich in which Reeves' ashes were scattered. Part documentary, part seance the live presentation takes place at the exact location of a real life witch burning in the town square. A final exhumation of English Heretic’s first magickal excursion into dangerous archetypal realities.

Exploring their profound experience of living in a world without sight or sound, this is an immersive installation where you will experience tactile communication. Greeted by tactile sign guides, you will be given headphones and goggles and guided into a large unseen space. With 360‑degree projection, expect to lose your depth of field, feel textures underfoot and meet faceless silhouettes. You will experience the visceral; receiving tactile sign, social haptic communication and touch choreography which is the language and culture of Deafblind people. Guayabo is a grief party: a meeting point to recognise together the reality of migration and its hardship, the perseverance and richness of our common losses, as well as our presence in each other’s journeys to grieve and create within the reality we share. Ania Varez is a Venezuelan artist based in Bristol, UK. She utilises movement and language as tools for social recognition and change. Her practice is blended with her own experience of migration, which she shares for people to access the notions of belonging and othering inside their own lives. She aims to facilitate spaces for people to exercise care, choice and attention, collectively creating new ways of being together and being here.

The piece is concerned with the chaos of memory in relation to personal and collective history and explores themes of dislocation and remembrance. Living on the border between many places and nowhere, Umama Hamido is a Lebanese artist who is currently in the UK. Through montages of performance, film, sound, and text she addresses experiences of loss, yearning, and remembrance. Her work unearths the ever‑present human threads of resistance within seemingly insurmountable structures of power.

The show contains music from pink suits debut album, to be recorded late 2018, in a performance experiment that blurs the line between live music gig and dance theatre. NABIL (BAN G L AD ESH/USA) Thahab explores the identity of a Muslim American femme in a post 9/11 diaspora. Thahab has been utilised live for durational performances, performance for video and photography. She shrouds, moulds, apparates and dissolves into environments using her body, in gold. She considers the contemporary and domestic, affected by notions of bodies, migration, displacement, dissonance and the disorienting experience of being viewed within an orientalist lens. Tensions rise between her and her surroundings, raising the urgent question of what assimilation entails given the current political climate and the rise of Islamophobia. Nabil is a Chicago‑based Bengali artist and creative organiser working with new media, photography, socially engaged art and performance. They create immersive works that examine elements of our lived experiences as they intersect with identity, politics, and queerness.

SAUT PR AYU DA (IN D O N ESIA) This durational performance will see the artist interact with audiences and the public. Saut will perform at various festival locations, where members of the public are invited to decorate his head with colourful roses and fallen twigs. Each interaction ends with an Indonesian “Thank You” and a gift for the participants. Saut Prayuda was born in June 20th 1992 in Bekasi. He now lives in Bandung, where he studies Indonesian Literature. He started his performance art experiences in 2012 and has performed at multiple festivals and exhibitions around the world.

PEO PLE LIK E US (U K) The Mirror is a live audio‑visual performance which splices together movie snippets with unique sample‑based music exploring the masks that we wear represented through the lens, using parallel narratives across the screen to depict an ever‑changing stream, rather than a singular, fixed being, narrative or moment in time. A feat of research and craft, this new work is a spellbinding inquiry into editing and juxtaposition; a collage one can unthread allowing the viewer to discover hidden stories through familiar images. The soundtrack is performed live, made up from hundreds of preexisting songs, as well as particular sounds from the original film clips. Since 1991 British artist Vicki Bennett has been working across the field of audio‑visual collage, and is recognised as an influential and pioneering figure in the still growing area of sampling, appropriation and cutting up of found footage and archives.

CARTER TUT TI (U K) A new Carter Tutti live audio visual performance presented ‘in the round’, utilising four audio channels accompanied by synchronised video projections. This form of presentation facilitates and enhances the individual experience and perception of the temporal continuum of music and the moving image. The duration of the piece will be one hour measured in Sidereal time – 56 minutes 4 seconds. Renowned solo artists Chris Carter and Cosey Fanni Tutti also perform together under various guises – most notably in seminal Industrial band Throbbing Gristle, as Chris + Cosey, and more recently as Carter Tutti and Carter Tutti Void. TELEPL ASM ISTE (U K) ‘The Wishing Machine’ by Teleplasmiste is a mesmerising electronic meditation exploring audio and sub‑audible frequencies that can induce potent emotional and physiological states.
THE WIRE
The performance incorporates powerful synthesisers, acoustic woodwind and percussion instruments and hypnotic video to transport those who experience it to strange new worlds. Teleplasmiste are Mark O. Pilkington, whose work has extended from publishing counterculture literature as Strange Attractor Press to summoning electronic drone reveries with Raagnagrok and Urthona, and Michael J. York, who brought his wide knowledge of traditional wind instruments to bear in bands that include Coil, Cyclobe, Guapo and The Stargazer’s Assistant. The duo blur vintage synthesis and contemporary electronics with acoustic pipes to create a transcendent reverie that exists on a wavelength beyond both retro fetishism and modern‑day machinations.

Hamish MacPherson is a London‑based choreographer. He uses performances, workshops, larps, games and other things to create environments for people to think, learn and be together. These structures are often decentralised and self‑organising, combining physical activity and conversation. They deal with passive exchanges and weak, barely‑there activity that is on the verge of disappearing.

During this six hour durational performance, audiences are invited to enter the space every 30 minutes and stay for up to an hour. Each group will see a unique moment of the performance, with no two parts the same.

TH E RO U G H BAN D (U K) Burn your woes and clear space for winter. On the opening night of SPILL Festival, a Pyre Parade effigy will be revealed at Ipswich Waterfront before being placed in La Tour Cycle Café. For 10 days you will be able to take a private moment and write down bad news, before posting it inside the effigy. Bad debts, health worries, a sour relationship, or colouring in where you went over the edges – whatever the badness, feed the beast. Then join us as we gather at 17:00 on Saturday 3 November, to march the effigy noisily from Ipswich Waterfront to Christchurch Park (Fonnereau Road entrance) , accompanied by mystical performers and a marching band, before we engulf the effigy in flames. Burning up the night sky and opening space for a better future. Local lads Mark Offord and Robert Pacitti have started The Rough Band, but anyone can be a member. Simply turn up with something loud to bang, such as wooden spoons on saucepan lids, and be prepared to hush as we move respectfully through Silent Street.

PH ILIP BEDWELL (U K) Using lace, body, blood, coal and ashes, this performance seeks to reveal the fragile nature of self. It questions how time changes us and how our perceptions of self change too. In this performance Philip seeks to show how we all find our identity and how he finds his place in masculine spaces. Philip is a London based live artist with a background in martial arts, physical fitness and performed as a professional wrestler for 22 years across Europe. Towards the end of his wrestling career he transitioned into live art as he found some of the performance similarities intriguing, such as displaying the body in poses to draw emotion from an audience. Bedwell discovered that live art could lend an authenticity to his work which couldn’t surface through the theatricality of wrestling.

Lady Helena Vortex is a street‑walking cheetah with a heart full of napalm. Psychopomp goddess and performer, her practice invests in ideas of risk, dynamics of living, thinking, feeling, dreaming, distinguishing and identifying. Her personal mythology boldly exposed as she subverts traditions of representation, power and sex.

WE’RE ALL ABO UT THE G O O D TI M ES We’ve burnt our bad news, seen some blood and now we want to party. Now a SPILL tradition, at the SPILL Party you can expect DJs, dancing, surprises and this year, Gaika at the helm. Join us at SPILL Central for a hair‑down, hoe‑down, shake it out bonanza. GAIKA isn’t the type to be boxed in. Since Machine, his debut mixtape appeared in 2015, critics have struggled to stick a tidy name onto his music and art. His darkly magnetic sound evolved through follow–up mixtape Security and EPs SPAGHET TO and The Spectacular Empire on Warp Records, building expectations for what is to come in 2018.
GAIKA shape‑shifts across not only musical markers but disciplines. He settles on the term ‘ghetto‑futurism’ to encompass what he does. It’s easier than waiting for the latest “ dancehall–meets–rave” label and allows him to build on afro‑futurism to make art steeped in blackness that “ harks back. It’s like the ghost in the machine. If you listen to grime, trap, dancehall, hip‑hop, reggae, there’s this glory in the face of death, a celebration of the impermanence of life.” That kernel of emotion, played out by artists using the latest technology to self–produce, underpins ghetto–futurism. “Ghetto’ isn’t just to do with black people,” he says, “ but it’s all the people who live under the boot, the 99%, and how we end up reveling in what other people deem the shadow.”

VIVIAN CHINASA EZU GHA (N I G ERIA/U K) Uro‑ (clay) Uro is about the weight of depression > (rebirth, awakening from sleep) In this durational performance, the artist interacts with clay and water on her body and canvas. The weight of the clay becomes a force that she works with and against over the six hours of the performance. Sitting on the body as a weighty, damp material, it becomes a solid foundation and morphs the body. Vivian Chinasa Ezugha is a Nigerian interdisciplinary artist working and living in the UK. Vivian graduated from Aberystwyth University School of Art, in 2014, Ezugha’s work has been presented at venues across Europe, America and the UK; to include In Between Time Festival as part of the New Bloods Commission, funded by Arts Council England.

After 11 days filled with incredible events, there’s only one thing left to do: party. Join us at this final event of SPILL 2018 to say thank you to the incredible group of artists, crew and volunteers who have helped make this festival happen, whilst enjoying a pint of our SPILL Festival beer, Zombie. There’ll be DJs and live music from Duduetsa, so get ready to dance. Duduetsa is an African marimba group based in the United Kingdom, presenting upbeat folk music from Zimbabwe, South Africa and Botswana, as well as contemporary covers from the region. The group’s set up typically includes soprano and baritone marimba, with drums and vocals, and songs sung in several southern African languages including Chishona, Isindebele, Setswana and Isixhosa.
