WELCOME TO SPILL EN MASSE As a group / all together / all at once

Welcome to the SPILL Festival of Performance 2016. For our eighth edition we are back in Ipswich and across five days in October we are unleashing a big friendly beast of a programme - over 100 events spanning live performance, installation, gigs, film, discussions, parties and more. You don’t have to be an art expert to enjoy SPILL, plus with all tickets £10 or £5, a range of amazing value passes and over a third of the festival completely free, it’s super easy to get involved.

In the programme are exciting SPILL Commissions made especially for the festival, plus lots of world premieres and works showing in the UK for the first time. There are participatory events for the adventurous and fantastic performances that take place onstage. 35 works in the festival form the SPILL National Platform, presented by early makers and generously supported by the Jerwood Charitable Foundation.

Presenting at more locations across the town than ever before, we have exciting projects for Kids + Families and an expanded focus on Sound + Music. Our new Heritage + Place strand presents homegrown projects that celebrate Ipswich. Some of these take place outdoors, others at Ipswich Museum and there are treats to be had in Christchurch Park.

Be sure to check out the SPILL Dome, bringing the festival to the street in an exciting new way and offering a daily programme of art, music and more. Each evening features talented local performers, bands and DJs and all events in the SPILL Dome are free.

SPILL Think Tank activities include daily talks, festival writing, SPILL TV and Photography, all generating great content for you to access free online at spillfestival.com We look forward to sharing an incredible line up with you and creating a special SPILL atmosphere together. SPILL FESTIVAL OF PERFORMANCE IS AN INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF LIVE ART, ACTIVISM AND PERFORMANCE PRESENTING THE WORK OF EXCEPTIONAL ARTISTS FROM AROUND THE GLOBE. CREATED IN 2007 BY PERFORMANCE MAKER ROBERT PACITTI, AND PRODUCED BY PACITTI COMPANY, SPILL IS RECOGNISED WORLDWIDE AS THE UK’S PREMIER ARTIST-LED FESTIVAL OF RADICAL LIVE WORK. ACCESS IS SOMETHING WE TAKE VERY SERIOUSLY AS MAKERS OF SPILL FESTIVAL AND WE WORK YEAR ROUND ON HOW TO BEST SERVE THE DIVERSE NEEDS OF ALL OUR GUESTS AND VISITORS. OUR STARTING POINT IS AN INCLUSIVE OFFER – THERE ARE NO SPECIAL EXCEPTIONS. WE DON’T BELIEVE THAT ACCESS SHOULD BE SOMETHING ADDITIONAL OR HAVE TO BE REQUESTED.

All venues in SPILL Festival 2016 have step free access or easy-to-use lifts to relevant floors.

Over a third of all events are free with top price tickets just £10. Day and All-Seeing passes offer the best value for those wanting to see lots across the Festival.

We aspire to the Plain English Campaign when using words to publicise the festival.

We write with you the reader in mind, keeping details clear, easy to use and friendly.

We champion artists describing their work in their own words. If you have any queries, or simply can’t get the measure of something, please telephone or email us and we will do our best to describe whatever it is in a different way.

Much of the work in SPILL is highly visual and lots of it is sensory in a number of ways. This year we have selected ten events that use more spoken word for British Sign Language interpretation.

SPILL FESTIVAL IS MADE BY PACITTI COMPANY Pacitti Company runs a rolling programme of events across the year out of the Think Tank, many of which help determine the direction of future SPILL Festivals.

SPILL Festival is produced by Pacitti Company – a UK based arts organisation that creates and presents experimental art internationally.

Pacitti Company approaches performance making as investigation through research.

The Company blends formal disciplines and techniques with social sciences and personal politic. This bespoke process enables Pacitti Company to serve diverse local, regional, national and international audiences with works of vital artistic and cultural value, whilst always remaining accessible.

Convened in 1990 by artist Robert Pacitti, the Company has spent the past 25 years making and touring an award-winning body of radical work around the world, including live performance, film and video, and massengagement projects.

Large scale SPILL Festivals have taken place across London in 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2015; and across Ipswich, Suffolk in 2012 and 2014.

Pacitti Company is an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation.

Ipswich has also become the permanent home for Pacitti Company’s office and studio, where its specially renovated Think Tank building occupies the Victorian Wing of the Ipswich Museum and Art School Gallery. This unique facility provides an open resource for ongoing public exploration into experimental arts practice.

Due to the nature, volume and situation of the National Platform works within the programme, none of these works are individually ticketed. At £30, with the SPILL day pass, you can get to see around 30 events a day – only £1 each!

SPILL SYMPOSIUM A DAY LONG GATHERING TAKING THE PULSE OF WHERE RADICAL, ACTIVIST AND POLITICISED PERFORMANCE IS AT.

Waterfront Building, University of Suffolk, Ipswich Wednesday 26 October 2016 10:30 – 17:30 £10

What forms can radical performance work take, what sites and contexts can it occupy, what can it do, and who can it be for?

What are the challenges and the potentials in relationships between artist-led and institutional contexts, and between activist and mainstream approaches? Who has power and what should they do with it? What kind of cultural ecosystem do we want and what can we do to create it?

The event sets out to consider different ways of working with the production, presentation, distribution and discussion of contemporary performance practices, and propose new models for a more sustainable and equitable future. The day is structured around conceptual issues, polemics, case studies and models of practices, in order to evolve shared conversations between all delegates around future strategies for cultural frameworks, critical dialogues and new audiences.

This gathering will put a contemporary performance framework around Chris Kraus’ famous question from her feminist tract I Love Dick, “who gets to speak, and why?”.

The day will comprise of two keynotes and four focused working areas. Each of these will begin with a series of short presentations, before audience led responses and discussions.

Continuing a long standing relationship with the festival, the SPILL 2016 Writer-In-Residence is London-based performance critic, curator and theorist Diana Damian Martin. She is co-founder of Writingshop, a long term collaborative project with three European critics examining the processes and politics of contemporary critical practice, and a member of practice-based research collective Generative Constraints. She has published widely on experimental criticism, writing as performance, political philosophy and politically engaged performance and live art. She is a Lecturer in Performance Arts at Royal Central School of Speech and Drama.

This performance is made with support of Mu-Fang Chen, costume designer and Interval, an artist-led studio space and supporting network based in Bristol.

IN EARLY 2013 MY BROTHER LEE WAS DIAGNOSED WITH TERMINAL CANCER. WITH THE OFFER OF PALLIATIVE CARE AND A HOPE THAT CHEMO MAY PROLONG HIS LIFE, HE LOOKED ME IN THE EYES AND SAID “I AM NOT AFRAID OF DYING, LET’S FILM THE JOURNEY, OUR LAST COLLABORATION”.

Filming started around Lee’s first session of chemo and instantly became a meditative documentation of two brothers, men bound by love, battling with their faiths and fears, while being forced to confront the ultimate realities of life and death.

A vocalist working in the area of movement art and noted for her unique melding of vocal styles ranging from contemporary classical, jazz, freeimprovisation. For Of Leonardo, Mitchener has worked with sound artist David Toop, filmmaker Barry Lewis to create this work and invited Dam Van Huynh to direct/choreograph it.

Chartering into the merciless realm of Placelessness

Shabnam Shabazi is an interdisciplinary ‘artivist,’ a maker and enabler of creative projects. Working with object, video/digital media; text, performance, collage and installation. Participation and creating platforms to give voice to important issues are at the heart of Shabnam’s practice. Her work is autobiographical and archival. Exploring notions of home, place, displacement, identity and the body.

When johnsmith was born an atom was fired at two slits. The scientists were surprised to see that the singular atom/john behaved like a fluid wave, and flowed through both. They fired again and watched. Under the pressure of an audience the atom/john chose a single slit. In each performance john crystallises one persona from many possibilities.

Dead Rat Orchestra, the UK’s leading avant folk adventurers, adrift in a sea of sound and possibility, plucking textures and melodies from a vast array of influences to craft an idiosyncratic vision of contemporary music and performance.

Documents is a development of Andy Sharp’s long standing creative research project English Heretic. With a remit to explore ethnographies of the imaginal, for the SPILL Festival, he will be premiering new music synthesised from four years of field work. From the last recordings at Aleister Crowley’s infamous abode at Boleskine via the locations of Polanski’s Repulsion to the kitsch cinematic adaptations of Lovecraft, Documents present Houses On The Borderland.

She Shanties formed in 2011 when 12 strong voices were brought together through a shared love of singing and harmonising (particularly in beer tents). Since then, they have performed at gigs and festivals across the UK and beyond.

They’re looking forward to celebrating their fifth birthday on 12th November with big sing aboard a cruise down the Tyne!

MacGillivray is the Highland name of Kirsten Norrie, poet, performance artist and musician. She has performed live internationally as a performance artist with The Wolf in the Winter and the Parlour Collective in Greenland, Vietnam, Scandinavia, Europe, the UK and the US. In 2015 she toured the US and Australia performing poetry and music and her work has appeared on the BBC, as part of film soundtracks for Britdoc/Channel 4 and in 2014 made a short Gaelic fantasy film on the Isle of Skye.

Cath & Phil Tyler play Anglo-American folk music using guitar, banjo, voice and fiddle. Coming together musically through a shared love of traditional narrative song, full voiced sacred harp singing and sparse mountain banjo, they have performed on stages as diverse as the Royal Opera House in London and a dank tower in the old city walls of Newcastle.

Mark lives on the Shotley Peninsula and struggles to trace his gene pool wider than the county bounds. His background is in the graphic arts and he co-runs Ipswich based design agency Firebrand Creative. He has recently collaborated with writer Justin Hopper on I Made Some Low Inquiries, is currently recording with Dom Cooper (Unknown Heretic) and developing new works with long term creative partner Stefan Musgrove. Walking is close to his heart and nature is his best friend.

How to embrace the irrationality of our world and still defiantly continue our peculiar search for significance? What at first looks awkward and flailing in ourselves may just save us. Here are some thrift shop rituals that might bring us together, satisfy our craving for connection, or at least for crisps.

Here, Victorian velvet décor clashes with a desire for plastic, shiny new things. Shiny breasts and button bottoms, plastic faces frozen to perfect pouts. Designer vagina surgeons come into conversation with the most ancient female exhibitionist Sheela-Na Gig whose vulva is carved from stone. This is a live exhibition of The Cabinet of Curiosities, where one body takes many curious forms.

A mini historic romp through the female form grotesquely squeezed into cabinets and jars displayed for all who wish to see.

Photo by Eija Mäkivuoti Founded in 2000 in Helsinki, international performance company Oblivia is a unique force on the Finnish performance scene. Working from grand ideas to minimalist performances, Oblivia merge the boundaries of genres and nationalities.

The background of Oblivia’s members from Finland and UK are in music, dance and theory. This mixture creates a vibrant tension and humour in the work.

DAVID HOYLE (UK) + VERY SPECIAL GUESTS + HOUSE BAND SNAPPED ANKLES COME AND CELEBRATE SPILL FESTIVAL IN FULL-ON PARTY MODE STYLE

The sensational anti-drag queen David Hoyle presents a very special performance made for SPILL. Expect polemic, pathos, provocative politicking and high comedy.

Sat 22:30 – late Pump & Grind

Hoyle came to prominence in the 1990s as the Divine David, a kind of anti-drag queen whose lacerating social commentary was offset by breathtaking instances of self-recrimination and even self-harm. Following a couple of outré latenight Channel 4 shows and a cameo in Velvet Goldmine, Hoyle killed the Divine David off during a spectacular show at the Streatham Ice Arena in 2000 and retreated to Manchester for “a period of reflection”. He returned to TV screens in 2005 in Chris Morris’s Nathan Barley, then began performing live again, under his own name (at venues such as Royal Vauxhall Tavern (RVT), Soho Theatre and Tate Britain).

“He is raw, sometimes a bit frightening, but also thrilling in his look-no-hands recklessness.”

With a core set of rock solid rhythm tunes infused with raw guitar and synth post punk, their songs often draw upon obscure references such as Kathy Bates’ character Annie Wilkes from the 1990 American Thriller ‘Misery’ and the 19th Century naive-art construction Palais Ideal by Ferdinand Cheval. At some performances the band surround their audience whilst playing their percussive “Synth Logs” to create a minimal homemade techno that has best been described as “agricultural Kraftwerk”.

Snapped Ankles are London’s art-wave oddities, a group who lead lives full of creative experimentation. Their performances are a phantasmagorical spectacle; the Snaps often appear draped from head to toe in unruly shamanistic dress, a visual emblem to their otherworldly presence.

For the past ten years filmmaker and performance documenter Ana Godinho de Matos has been battling with the limitations of moving image in coming anywhere close to the essence of live performance and the imprint it leaves in the memory of the viewer.

Across SPILL Festival, Ana and sound artist Wajid Yaseen will be gathering material from works on show, to experiment with re/creating the experience of live performance through sculpted immersive multimedia forms.

She aims to produce work that inspires and captures the imagination of the viewer.

Wajid Yaseen is a sonic artist who has worked extensively throughout the UK and Europe. He has directed a number of projects, written soundscores for films and documentaries, and been involved in collaborative installations.

HIND UMAMA HAMIDO (LEBANON) IN SUMMER OF 2014 UMAMA HAMIDO TRAVELLED FROM HER CITY BEIRUT TO THE BEQAA VALLEY, VISITING VILLAGES ON THE BORDERS OF LEBANON AND SYRIA.

She was drawn by the beauty of the people and a way of life much removed from the one she is accustomed to in the capital city.

This is a world of local tribes, rebel fighters, and people who have fled from the ongoing civil war in the neighbouring country.

Part of SPILL Passes HIND was developed through MA Performance Making at Goldsmiths University of London with further support from Artsadmin’s BANNER scheme and Al-Mawred al Thaqafy Culture Resource's Production Awards Program.

Hind documents a landscape and the daily life of a people who inhabit it. In this cinematic performance, Umama takes the audience on a journey through sound and image, sharing footage which captures both the serenity and the beauty of this environment and the inhabitants but also a reality of tension, poverty, fear and imminent danger.

Image: Still from film Umama Hamido (b.1987) is an artist from Beirut city. Her practice spans different aspects of performance in between body, sound, and visual art. In 2015, she finished her Masters degree in Performance Art at Goldsmiths University.

Her work is informed by her immediate reality connected to recent political events in Lebanon and neighbouring countries.

SANCTUARY RING MARTIN O’BRIEN + SHEREE ROSE (UK/US) A SANCTUARY RING IS A METAL KNOCKER ON THE DOOR OF A CHURCH. UNTIL THE 17TH CENTURY FUGITIVES COULD HOLD THE RING AND CLAIM ASYLUM FOR 40 DAYS FROM THE LAW.

In this durational site specific performance at St Clement’s Church, Martin O’Brien and Sheree Rose create their own sanctuary of sickness. This is a place for freaks, monsters and weirdos. It’s a place of pain, sacrifice and submission in order to survive and you are invited to join them. Take cover from the chaos of the outside world and let’s claim sanctuary together.

Photo by Marco Berardi Martin is an artist whose work draws upon his experience of suffering from cystic fibrosis. His work uses physical endurance, long durations and pain in order to address a politics of the sick queer body. He has presented work throughout the UK, Europe and the US and is lecturer in performance at Queen Mary University.

Jennifer Doyle, KCET

Sheree Rose is a pioneering body artist. She became infamous during the 1980s as an artist and dominatrix for her collaborations with partner Bob Flanagan. Together they explored illness, love, death and pain for sixteen years until his death from cystic fibrosis in 1996. She has presented work throughout the world including at the New Museum of Modern Art (New York), Tate Liverpool, Santa Monica Museum of Modern Art.

Greater Anglia trains run from London Liverpool Street every 30 mins during the day. Journey times just over an hour.
