SPILL FESTIVAL OF PERFORMANCE IS AN INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF LIVE ART, ACTIVISM AND PERFORMANCE PRESENTING THE WORK OF EXCEPTIONAL ARTISTS FROM AROUND THE GLOBE. CREATED IN 2007 BY PERFORMANCE MAKER ROBERT PACITTI, AND PRODUCED BY PACITTI COMPANY, SPILL IS RECOGNISED WORLDWIDE AS THE UK’S PREMIER ARTIST-LED FESTIVAL OF RADICAL LIVE WORK. SPILL questions traditions of art and society. The festival contains work that may be challenging to some people and SPILL seeks to nurture a culture of open discussion around this.

WELCOME to spill on sPIRIT

Welcome to SPILL 2015, an exciting international festival of radical live performance, installation, special events and public discussions.

Join us across London for two weeks of brave, meaningful, and exceptionally crafted contemporary art, on and around the body. You don’t have to be an art expert to join in, and one third of the entire programme is free.

In the festival are exciting SPILL commissions and world premieres. Some take place outdoors, others in a selection of great venues. There are participatory works to get involved in and mysterious goodies to eat. There are phenomenal performances that take place onstage, and gentle one-to-ones and small group encounters that are nonetheless powerfully transformational.

The theme of this year’s SPILL is Spirit. This manifests in the vital force that is the exceptional work of seminal performance maker Karen Finley; in a trio of pieces presented by Zierle & Carter, where dying as an essential part of all nature is carefully held as a space of possibility; in Robin Deacon’s outmoded technologies, used to revisit previous hopes and dreams; Ria Hartley invites us to remember; Gemma Marmalade invites us to taste; Kris Canavan’s purging procession raises spirits in an act of defiance and resistance; Sarah Jane Norman records and re-records the potential of an indefinite self – that complex bit of us humans associated with mind and feelings and will.

At the heart of the programme is the SPILL Showcase, presenting works by early makers and those whose practices have been overlooked. For the past year, Showcase artists have been working with SPILL New Producers, creating and reworking pieces for the festival, all generously supported by the Jerwood Charitable Foundation.

SPILL Think Tank, SPILL Writing, SPILL TV and SPILL Photography activities take place every day, all generating great content for you to access free online at www.spillfestival.com. There you can also support our work by making a donation or becoming a patron too.

SPILL 2015 culminates with a very special final event – a treacherous fire stunt performed by Cassils, live onstage at the National Theatre; an action speaking directly to questions of privilege, responsibility, and power.

At a time of increasing global uncertainty about the future, SPILL aims to generate some positivity. To add good energy to the city for its duration; celebrating the potential of radical artists to help us think of new ways of being, and of being better, together.

PACITTI COMPANY SPILL Festival is produced by Pacitti Company – a UK based arts organisation that creates and presents experimental art internationally.

Convened in 1990 by artist Robert Pacitti, the Company has spent the past 25 years making and touring an award-winning body of radical work around the world, including live performance, film and video, and mass-engagement projects.

Large scale SPILL Festivals have taken place across London in 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2013; and across Ipswich, Suffolk in 2012 and 2014.

Ipswich has also become the permanent home for Pacitti Company’s office and studio, where its specially renovated Think Tank building occupies the Victorian Wing of the Ipswich Museum and Art School Gallery. This unique facility provides an open resource for ongoing public exploration into experimental arts practice.

Pacitti Company runs a rolling programme of events across the year out of the Think Tank, many of which help determine the direction of future SPILL Festivals.

Pacitti Company approaches performance making as investigation through research. The Company blends formal disciplines and techniques with social sciences and personal politic. This bespoke process enables Pacitti Company to serve diverse local, regional, national and international audiences with works of vital artistic and cultural value, whilst always remaining accessible.

Pacitti Company is an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation.

The work was written at a time when medical treatment was ineffective and when Karen Finley was losing her friends to the disease on a continual basis. Some pieces are excerpted from her earlier shows of the era; others are based on writing she did at the time that has never been published or performed.

Also born in Chicago, Paul Nebenzahl is a performing musician in jazz, blues and classical performance on a variety of instruments including flute, harmonica and piano. He released his poetry collection, ‘Black Shroud With Rainbow Fringes’ in 2014. Nebenzahl has previously collaborated with Ms. Finley on works such as ‘Broken Negative’ and the Holocaust memorial ‘Open Heart’.

Born in Chicago international artist Karen Finley received an MFA from San Francisco Art Institute and is now a professor in Art and Public Policy at New York University and is author to 8 books.

Her transgressive art crosses disciplines from performance, music, visual art, film, installation, social practice theatre, education and literature.

Finley’s appearance in London at the ICA was censored in 1986.

Ribbon Gate Karen Finley (USA) Ribbon Gate is a public mourning sculpture where visitors participate by tying a ribbon in memory of a loved one.

Ribbon Gate is a participatory installation that is part of several artworks that comprise the exhibition Memento Mori.

Wed 28 Oct – Tue 1 Dec Barbican opening hours Barbican (Foyers)

Memento Mori, which premiered in 1991, was an interactive installation in response to AIDS and the lack of memorials, compassion and government response. Memento Mori sought to encourage compassion, and a space for mourning, where at the time because of homophobia and fear there were no public sanctioned rituals to acknowledge or grieve for those lost to AIDS.

Karen Finley created artworks as a response to the AIDS crisis through the ‘80s and ‘90s. Frustrated and angry over the refusal to acknowledge and provide humane spaces for mourning by families and religious institutions for those lost to AIDS, Finley began creating her own spaces in poetry, performance texts and visual art.

SHOCK TREATMENT Celebrating a special 25th anniversary edition, Karen Finley will read and reflect on her classic 1990 book Shock Treatment published by City Lights Books, which includes many of the performance texts that were considered “obscene and indecent” at the time. She will discuss the tumultuous culture wars, when public funding for the arts was under attack and Finley became the named plaintiff in Finley vs. the National Endowment for the Art, a case that was brought to the Supreme Court in 1998.

In addition to her reading, Finley will talk about finding joy in artmaking after a decade-long legal battle, and her creative process and production. Q&A will follow.

Stone Tape Theory Sarah-Jane Norman (Australia/Germany) a durational sound performance in which the performer mines the shifting terrain of her own memories.

Stone Tape Theory takes its name from an obscure paranormal hypothesis in which ghostly presences are explained not as discarnate souls, but as electro-magnetic “imprints” in space.

The performer recites aloud a continual chain of associative memories – ranging from the banal to the traumatic – whilst in a state of induced trance-regression. These utterances are mediated through the defunct technology of analogue tape, generating an evolving sonic landscape, hypnotic loops and spectral distortions.

Sarah-Jane Norman (b.1984, Sydney) is an interdisciplinary artist based between Sydney and Berlin. Working across a diverse range of media, the core of her practice is durational performance.

Working as a solo artist since 2006, she has also trained and worked collaboratively with Guillemo Gomez-Pena, Yoshito Ohno and Marina Abramovic.

Considering memory as a decaying loop of impressions which equally construct and disturb our experience of the present, the work asks what it means to be haunted; what is a haunting, if not a memory in space? And what is a memory, if not a haunting of the body?

Her most recent works have been presented in partnership with SPILL (UK), Fierce (UK), In Between Time (UK), Arnolfini (UK), Next Wave (AU), Forest Fringe (UK), Performance Space Sydney (AU), Venice International Performance Art Week (IT), Kaldor Public Art Projects (AU) and the Australian Experimental Art Foundation (AU).

Moving mountains Pacitti Company & special guests (UK)

A three screen video work exploring issues of disability and power, starring Angela Dawn Wright, Giovanna Maria Casetta, Rowan James & Tonny.

Moving Mountains is an installation of arresting images and a dark soundtrack, that distil a public response, from and on behalf of disabled people, to experiences of prejudice or assault – big or small, subtle or overt – that take place pretty much daily. But this does not mean it starts from being victims, and in the words of one participant, “fuck your sympathy”.

What would you do if you could return to a memory and change it? Would it affect your future? Could you rewrite a part of your own history?

In the field of neurology, scientists have identified that the human mind inserts information from the present into past memories. When recalled, memories are reinterpreted to adapt in an ever-changing environment, re-framing moments of a person’s life. Unlike a film which relays a recorded event as it was captured, the human memory edits information to present a story which fits into a person’s present reality.

Ria Hartley is an interdisciplinary solo performance artist and researcher based in Bristol, UK. ENTER A TIME CAPSULE AND FIND YOURSELF IN WHAT PURPORTS TO BE A TEENAGE GIRL’S BEDROOM IN THE 1970s.

Rifle through the piles of punk fanzines, fetish clothes, LPs, and teen magazines; take in the walls collaged with gig posters, pages torn from porn mags, and scrawledover wallpaper; and snuggle down on the Sex Is No Emergency bed.

An accompanying sound installation fuses ‘70s pop tunes with a poetic reflection on the sexualisation of girl children. White Balance: A History of Video Robin Deacon (USA/UK) a series of outmoded vintage video cameras explore how our ways of seeing and ways of remembering may be informed by the medium used to capture the event.

The title White Balance refers to the process by which a camera is adjusted to account for differences in light, changing the relative strengths of colors to reach a truer sense of what is being seen. From the evolution of the video camera and meditations on discarded videotape formats, to the revisiting of lost and abandoned video footage, this performance tells a series of stories on time travel, haunting and hallucination.

Lauren comes from a Fine Art sculpture background with an MA in Costume for Performance. Issues surrounding sexuality, the explicit ‘objectified; body, fragility of the body and embodied power struggles inform her current practice. Her work explores viscerally the blurred boundaries of where body and object merge; a tactile site of metamorphic, transformative, hybrid symbiotic potential within a performance and sculptural context. Quentin Crisp first came to attention in 1968 when his autobiography The Naked Civil Servant was published. He died in 1999, author of 14 books and star of over 20 films.

In 1996 Pacitti travelled to New York to meet and spend time with Quentin. Later Pacitti wrote of him “I have seen the face of a parent”. Civil Extracts isolates a section of Super 8 footage from that time and presents it anew as a loop.

In The Waiting Room Stamos appears nude, watched by Quentin in footage from 1997, as a reference to his former self as an art-fag gogo boy; and to Crisp’s years of experience as a nude model for art classes.

Ipswich and London based Robert Pacitti is an artist and curator, working across film, sound, text and performance. He is a Visiting Professor of Arts at University Campus Suffolk.

Montréal based George Stamos is a versatile choreographer, dancer and educator. In his formative years Stamos was a go-go dancer in Toronto, London, Amsterdam and NYC and he is a 1993 graduate of The Amsterdam School of the Arts.

IN CONVERSATION George Stamos and Robert Pacitti in conversation about their respective works and experiences of knowing Quentin Crisp. Expect tales from the Lower East Side, and hear why both Stamos and Pacitti were drawn to Crisp as an influential cultural figure. Q&A will follow.

Shabnam Shabazi continues her ongoing investigation into notions of ‘home’. This time creating an aural and visual ‘listening room’, shedding light on what it means to be without a permanent location or abode.

Shabnam Shabazi is a multi-disciplinary ‘artivist,’ a maker and enabler of creative projects.

Working with object, video / digital media; text, performance, collage and installation. Participation and creating platforms to give voice to important issues are at the heart of Shabnam’s practice. Her work is autobiographical and archival. Exploring notions of home, place, displacement, identity and the body.

Recent and ongoing research includes exploring the idea of the body as a house and investigating stories from ourselves, stories from within. For the last two decades, Katy has been at the frontline of the customer service industry. From getting you high to super-sizing your whopper meal she has done everything she can to make you happy.

She is not sure if she has got much more left to give but, for this show (like the true professional she is), she will put herself out there one more time to give you everything you want.

Katy Baird is a London-based artist and activist who often finds herself in uncomfortable situations of her own making. Her solo work is intimate and autobiographical, reflecting on gender, class and sexuality. She has performed at Live Art festivals and venues across the UK as well as squat parties, clubs and raves.

The Machinist, circa 1986 Debbie Guinnane (IRELAND)

a space where the body is held in a ‘suspension of disbelief.’

Triggering thoughts on control; over which an artist hungers.

In preparation for the film The Machinist, Christian Bale dropped 63 lbs in the space of four months. His act mimics the hunger artists who starved themselves for public exhibition around North America and Europe, between the 18th and 20th centuries.

Debbie Guinnane (b.1986, Ireland) is a visual artist currently based in Newcastle upon Tyne. She studied Sculpture & Combined Media in LSAD in Limerick, graduating in 2008, before completing her Masters Degree in Visual Arts Practices with IADT in Dublin, 2012. She was rewarded a studentship to pursue a full-time practice-based PhD with Northumbria University, which commenced in October 2014. Guinnane has written, performed and presented work in Turkey, Poland, UK and Ireland.

This performance / installation piece explores the machinery of the human body through mythology and fetishism.

Multiple performers are encased in an airtight latex column; Adam creates a vacuum with his own breathing, forming a three-dimensional frieze. The human forms are dehumanised as the latex is sucked tightly around them turning them into living sculptures.

Dead Rat Orchestra perform a live soundtrack to James Holcombe’s 16mm experimental documentary.

Tyburnia explores the parallels between contemporary and historical notions of crime in relation to economy and property, the spectacular nature of punishment, and the state’s use of the body as a site for political control.

Bringing their gritty, rough hewn interpretations and dexterous multi-instrumentalism; Dead Rat Orchestra will perform a live sound track to Tyburnia featuring songs that were composed for those condemned to ‘dance the Tyburn jig’.

Dead Rat Orchestra are one of the UK’s most innovative ensembles, their work has been performed, installed and experienced across Europe, North America and the Middle East, and their soundtracks have featured on BBC Television and at Tate Modern. They have toured and performed internationally with the likes of Martin Carthy, Godspeed You Black Emperor, Pere Ubu, Silver Mount Zion, Eric Chenaux, Silver Apples and Baby Dee. Aside from their own unique performances, they have composed works for performance by the London Contemporary Orchestra, Britten Sinfonia and the Ukranian Conservatoire, and collaborated with The Pitt Rivers Museum.

The work offers a new understanding to broadside ballads that have become a staple of folk music, here presented in closer association to their original socio-political context.

James Holcombe’s work combines a deep material engagement with film; the chance outcomes possible through expanded projection and improvisation across sound and image. Lyrical structuralism collides with handmade film techniques, chemical interventions, and socio-political historical narratives.

Inextinguishable Fire Heather Cassils (USA) Cassils’ work Inextinguishable Fire speaks to the impossibility of representing certain forms of trauma and violence. How can we enact empathy when our own situation is so removed from the atrocities of torture and war?

SPILL presents two works in conversation: in both a live performance and a film Cassils engages in a treacherous fire stunt. Using techniques borrowed from Hollywood stunts, Cassils experiences the very real human terror of being lit on fire. Cassils gesture of self-immolation speaks to both the desire for and the impossibility of knowing such horror, even while decisively aiming to approach it.

Inextinguishable Fire unpacks the often unquestioned “documentarian truth value” associated with mediated images and demands the viewer witnesses the construction of violence.

Cassils is an artist who uses the physical body as sculptural mass with which to rupture societal norms. Forging a series of powerfully trained bodies for different performative and formal purposes; it is with sweat, blood and sinew that they construct a visual critique and discourse around physical and gender ideologies and histories. Drawing on conceptualism, feminism, body art, gay male aesthetics, and Hollywood cinema, Cassils creates a visual language that is at once emotionally striking and conceptually incisive.
