erhaps because it involves young people on an outdoor adventure as part of their religious life, every young believer grows up knowing this story. It has

been told and retold how the prophet Elisha retrieved a borrowed ax head from the waters of the Jordan River by causing it to float to the surface. It has

been colored on activity pages in Sabbath School and acted out in skits on Pathfinder campouts. It’s just a good story to hear and to tell!

But why? Why is the ax head the focal point of the story? These same people saw Elijah taken up into heaven in a whirlwind with chariots and horses of fire on the banks of this same river. Surely a chunk of iron that briefly floats pales by comparison.

Here is how the New International Version recounts the scene: The company of the prophets said to Elisha, “Look, the place where we meet with you is too small for us. Let us go to the Jordan, where each of us can get a pole; and let us build a place there for us to meet.” And he said, “Go.” Then one of them said, “Won’t you please come with your servants?” “I will,” Elisha replied. And he went with them.

They went to the Jordan and began to cut down trees. As one of them was cutting down a tree, the iron ax head fell into the water. “Oh no, my lord!” he cried out. “It was borrowed!”

The man of God asked, “Where did it fall?” When he showed him the place, Elisha cut a stick and threw it there, and made the iron float. “Lift it out,” he said. Then the man reached out his hand and took it (2 Kings 6:1-7).

Let’s shift our gaze and leave the ax head safely on the shore for a moment. Before there is a lost ax head, there is an important conversation that we have too often missed. Before there is a miracle, there is a simple request from a bunch of eager young people: “Won’t you please come with us?” Before the trip gets started, before the work gets organized, before the crisis over the loss of something important, before the iron floats—the prophet hears that invitation and answers, “OK, I’ll go with you,” and the adventure begins.

This does not necessarily involve a wasteful lifestyle; it can also be the reality of a modest Christian full of good intentions. Let me illustrate this idea with a

real example.

On one occasion, a friend told me that he was going through a very difficult

period. His entire income was committed to essential expenses, and there was not even enough left over to treat his family with ice cream. He had no savings, and he justified himself by recalling the countless times he had helped friends and relatives. If he had never saved throughout his life, it was because, according to him, he had always been willing to help anyone who asked.

Once we understand this, we need to establish responsible financial planning, with criteria for saving, spending, donating, helping, giving gifts, and yes, also for offering to God. Native American Camp Meeting:

Community Festival Strengthens Connections and Shares Hope in Phoenix

n May 17, the Community of Hope Center welcomed families and neighbors for a Community Festival designed to build relationships, introduce attendees to available resources and services, and strengthen connections among the community. Held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the event brought together churches, ministries, and organizations in a spirit of service and collaboration.

The festival was made possible through the support of the Community of Hope advisory team and volunteers from several Arizona Conference churches, including Scottsdale Thunderbird, Glendale, Phoenix Central, Phoenix Camelback, Grace in the Desert, Central Valley Spanish, Community of Hope, and Deer Valley Hispana.

More than a dozen booths offered resources and activities for all ages. Community partners and

ministries provided information on family services, health resources, education, and outreach programs, while volunteers created a welcoming atmosphere with games, face painting, and refreshments.

Representatives from Thunderbird Adventist Academy, Camp Yavapines, DINE Adventist Radio, and Good News TV were among those participating.

Attendees also enjoyed a musical program featuring a praise group led by Valeria Estrada, a presentation

by Grupo Cielo, and special music shared by Native participants in their own language. Approximately 35 to 40 community members attended the event, and guests' responses were positive and encouraging.

The Community Festival reflected the Arizona Conference churches' commitment to serving their communities and sharing Christ's love in practical ways. Leaders expressed gratitude for the many volunteers and churches that worked together to make the event possible, and they remain confident that God will continue to guide the ministry of the Community of Hope Center and its outreach to the surrounding community. ____________________

Walking in Beauty With Jesus

he recent Native American Camp Meeting welcomed people from many cultural backgrounds to worship, share stories, and reflect together. The weekend was an opportunity for fellowship and spiritual growth as well as a chance to enjoy beautiful weather. At the heart of the gathering were themes of reconciliation, discipleship, and the relationship between faith and culture, inviting all present to consider how their spiritual journeys intersect with their heritage.

Throughout the weekend, Pastor Brad Dennis and his family invited participants to reflect on the importance of family, intentional relationships, and sharing the gospel in ways that speak meaningfully within Indigenous cultural contexts.

A recurring theme throughout the meetings was reconciliation—both with God and with one another. Participants were encouraged to approach ministry with humility, repentance, and a spirit of service, recognizing the need to restore relationships and reflect Christ's character to those who have experienced hurt or misrepresentation in the name of Christianity. In this context, reconciliation was framed not only as a social ideal but also as a spiritual calling.

“We are living in a prophetic time of reconciliation,” stated Pastor Dennis, urging believers to respond with

humility, repentance, and a posture of service marked by truth and grace.

Messages focused on the example Jesus gives in nurturing and caring for His children, highlighting the importance of love, understanding, and intentionality within families. The Dennis family’s messages emphasized that healthy relationships are not merely a social concern but are closely connected to spiritual life and the salvation experience. Parenting was explored through the lens of God’s character— intentional, patient, and rooted in love. Jesus leads His people with care and purpose, and families were inspired to reflect that same intentionality and grace in their homes.

Ultimately, the camp meeting affirmed a shared conviction: reconciliation is about more than healing the past—it is about forging a future where truth, grace, and cultural understanding come together, bringing people to Christ and eternal life. ____________________

VBS Live 2026:

More Than a Training, a Movement in Motion

O

n March 1, the doors of Clovis church opened to what looked, at first glance, like a typical training event. By mid-morning, it was clear this was something more. Leaders were not just attending. They were leaning in, asking questions, laughing through skits, and imagining what summer ministry could become in their own churches.

VBS Live is designed to do exactly that. It is not simply a walkthrough of a program. It is a full, immersive experience where leaders step into Vacation Bible School as if they were children themselves, rotating through centers, participating in activities, and seeing firsthand how each moment can point a child to Jesus. This year, 109 attendees representing 24 churches gathered for that experience, supported by 14 dedicated volunteers who helped bring the day to life. Among those churches were four preparing to host VBS for the very first time. Each one represents a step of faith and a growing commitment to reach children and families.

Two programs, one purpose For 2026, churches were introduced to two distinct VBS options. The North American Division’s Cactusville VBS took center stage, inviting children into a desertthemed journey where they discover God’s love and purpose through story, music, and hands-on learning. For the first time in over two decades, we also welcomed Group Publishing as a guest presenter, featuring their Rainforest Falls VBS program. This addition created space for churches who have traditionally used Group materials, while also giving

others a chance to explore a different approach to VBS ministry. Different settings. Different styles. One shared mission. Helping children encounter Jesus in a way they will never forget.

A growing and changing community One of the most meaningful parts of the day was not on the schedule. It unfolded in conversations, in shared stories, and in the growing presence of Hispanic churches stepping into VBS ministry. That growth showed up not only in attendance but also in participation and leadership. San Jose Hispanic church brought the largest team this year with 15 members, while Bakersfield Southside, which has consistently invested in training, has brought strong teams for the past two years, including a group of 12.

This momentum has made something clear. As more Hispanic churches engage in VBS, we must continue to grow alongside them.

Next year, VBS Live will expand to include a fully

Spanish training the evening before the main event.

Both trainings will offer the same content. One will be entirely in Spanish, with Spanish-speaking presenters and center leaders. This step allows us to better support churches in a way that is both accessible and meaningful. That spirit of partnership was seen clearly in the leadership of Edwin Mendoza, who spent the entire day translating, supporting, and stepping in wherever needed. Alongside him, Rachel Hermenegildo brought both faith and joy to her role. When first asked to help, she humbly shared, “I am willing; however, I am not a professional, just so you know. But I can get by, mostly through the Holy Spirit that guides me. With that said, I will be there as needed.” And she was. From translating for center leaders to supporting the opening program and skits, she even added moments of humor that brought warmth and connection to the experience.

Her presence reflected what the day was truly about: willing hearts, guided by God, making ministry possible.

What VBS Live prepares, and what it cannot replace By the end of the day, leaders left equipped with tools, ideas, and a clear vision for their summer programs. VBS Live can demonstrate a skit. It can model a Bible story. It can organize a schedule. But it cannot replace the heart of a leader who is connected to God. It cannot create the prayer life that sustains ministry. It cannot manufacture unity within a team. That part belongs to the local church. VBS comes to life when a team is grounded in prayer, united in purpose, and willing to serve with both excellence and humility.

From one week to a lasting connection If VBS is the spark, follow-up is what keeps the fire burning.

Here are a few simple ways churches can begin building lasting connections with families: • Start relationships early. Learn names during VBS, talk with parents at pickup, and create moments of genuine connection throughout the week.

• Invite, do not assume. Personally invite families back for Sabbath programs, children’s ministries, or special events. A direct invitation matters.

• Create a next step. Offer a clear path for families to return, such as monthly children’s programs, family events, or small groups.

• Stay consistent. One meaningful connection helps.

Students Share Hope Door-to-Door in Fresno

he Sanger Bilingual church, in partnership with Adventist Health, hosted a Free Community Health Expo aimed at promoting wellness, prevention, and wholistic care among local residents.

The event provided attendees with access to basic health screenings, including glucose, hemoglobin, A1C, blood pressure, height and weight measurements, as well as general health assessments conducted by medical providers.

In addition to screenings, participants received practical lifestyle education centered on the eight laws of health, equipping community members with tools to make informed decisions about their physical wellbeing. Church members and local residents attended the event, creating opportunities for education, connection, and support.

Beyond addressing physical health needs, the expo also opened doors for spiritual engagement, generating new Bible study interests and

strengthening awareness that the church remains committed to serving the community through compassionate service and outreach.

Event organizers said the initiative demonstrates the impact possible when local congregations collaborate with healthcare institutions to meet both physical and spiritual needs. The expo served as a reminder that ministry extends beyond church walls and into everyday community life.

Leaders expressed gratitude to Adventist Health for their partnership and support, describing the event as an example of faith and service working together to bring hope, healing, and wholeness to the community.

Organizers said the success of the health expo reflects the growing potential for churches, clinics, and healthcare systems to partner in addressing community needs while building trust and strengthening relationships with residents. ____________________

n April 24, the Central California Conference Literature Ministries Department partnered with Fresno Adventist Academy for a special day of outreach in the neighborhood closest to the school. Nearly 60 young people, including students in grades 7-12, along with several parents and teachers, went door-todoor to pray with families and share Christcentered literature.

By the end of the outreach, 234 copies of The Great Controversy, 254 copies of Patriarchs and Prophets, and 26 copies of Steps to Christ had been distributed. Even more meaningful than the number of books shared were the many opportunities students had to pray with people at their doors and bring encouragement to homes throughout the community.

One powerful divine appointment took place as Pastor John Miller was dropping off a group of young men on their next street. He parked in front of a house, stepped out, and gathered the students for prayer. Just as they said “Amen,” a woman came out of the house and asked what they were doing. The group explained that they were students from Fresno Adventist Academy, praying with people and sharing free Christian literature as a way to do something positive in the community.

Her response was immediate: “Well,

I could definitely use some prayer right now. My husband’s not doing well.”

She then shared that her husband had been facing serious health challenges after suffering a stroke the previous year. She invited the students inside to meet her husband and son and to pray with the family. The family was deeply touched that young people would take time to share God’s love in such a practical and personal way.

This experience was a beautiful reminder that God still leads His workers to the very homes where prayer, hope, and encouragement are needed most. As Ellen White wrote, “By courteous behavior and kindness such a worker may open the door of many homes” (Colporteur Ministry, p. 88).

Jesus said, “The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few” (Matthew 9:37, NKJV). On April 24, Fresno Adventist Academy students stepped into that harvest field, and God blessed their willingness with open doors, open hearts, and sacred moments of prayer.” ____________________

group of 17, including Aiea Ali‘i Pathfinders and parents, from the Aiea church in Honolulu, Hawaii, spent their spring break at a remote location along the Thailand-Myanmar border. Their journey took them on a life‑changing mission trip to the Naung Bo Den Learning Center in Mae Sat, Thailand. The center is a place where migrant children find hope, education, and the promise of a brighter future. The mission trip was in partnership with ASAP Ministries.

A mission of service Their days were filled with hands‑on service. The Pathfinders arrived with a clear goal: to improve the living conditions for those at the center. With generous donations from the club, new bathroom facilities were built, and the youth spent hours painting. Yet, the physical labor was only the beginning.

Throughout their stay, the Pathfinders also led Vacation Bible School (VBS), filling the air with songs and laughter. VBS included arts and crafts, Bible lessons, and games. They assisted in hosting medical screenings that included blood pressure, cholesterol, oral hygiene, height and weight, health counseling, and massages.

Throughout the weeklong mission trip, they conducted door-todoor house visits in nearby villages to share the gospel. In the evenings, they helped lead an evangelistic series that brought the villagers and students together under a message of hope.

Cultural bridges and gratitude Beyond the projects and the VBS sessions, the Pathfinders also had the opportunity to experience a new culture. The depth

of hospitality they were given moved the Pathfinders on a personal and spiritual level. Often, they found common ground over shared meals while learning from each other.

While language barriers existed, they were bridged by smiles and a shared love for Jesus. The Pathfinders witnessed firsthand the incredible resilience of the children and youth from the center, which sparked a deep sense of gratitude and an enhanced perspective on life.

"This mission trip demonstrated that this isn't about us; rather, it allowed God to work through us," said Camilo Castano, Aiea Pathfinder director. "We witnessed firsthand our Pathfinders performing God's work, and it has been a powerful experience they'll never forget."

A spiritual awakening The impact on the Pathfinders was profound. They discovered that true service goes far beyond what you give with your hands and focuses on what you allow God to do through your heart and actions.

"It’s crazy because these kids literally have nothing, but they’re still the happiest people I’ve ever met," said McKenzie Cazarez, a member of the Aiea Pathfinder

club. "Being at Naung Bo Den made me realize that I don't need 'stuff' to be grateful, I just need a heart as big as theirs."

The mission trip experience provided the Pathfinders a glimpse of how their work can help spread the love of Jesus across cultural boundaries. Each Pathfinder and parent witnessed firsthand the resilience of the children as well as their gratitude. Through these encounters, the Pathfinders experienced a better perspective of life along with giving back to those less fortunate.

On the last evening of their trip, a social event around a bonfire solidified the friendships and experiences that brought the Pathfinders and the children of the learning center together. The Pathfinders shared a traditional Hawaiian hula dance, while the learning center's children and staff performed a Burmese dance. The Pathfinders returned to Hawaii not just with memories but also with renewed purpose and a desire to share Jesus' love.

“The mission trip has greatly impacted our club,” said Castano. “God willing, we’re hoping our club will visit the Naung Bo Den Learning Center again in the future.” ____________________

Horsemanship Program Builds Relationships and Confidence

F

or our kids at Holbrook Indian School, the horses in our barn are more than just animals. They are confidants, soft-nosed friends, and a vital part of their healing journey.

Because our students form such deep bonds with them, when things change in the barn, the whole campus feels it.

We went through a tough loss over spring break when our beloved Appaloosa, Dancer, passed away. He became sick very suddenly, and even with around-the-clock monitoring from our dedicated staff and local veterinarian, he passed away. He will be missed by our students and staff alike, and his absence in the barn will be deeply felt for a long time to come.

However, even in a season of grief, we’ve been reminded of how beautifully God provides through community. A local neighbor who has a deep heart for our students and mission generously donated two new horses to help fill that empty space. We welcomed Honeycomb and Diesel at the end of May, and our students and staff are excited to start the process of building new friendships.

In addition to the two new horses in the barn, thanks to generous donors, we were able to buy a two-horse bumper pull trailer, which will make routine vet visits and off-campus trips much safer. It is the relationships our students make with the horses that make the time and effort put into our horsemanship program so worth it. Students like Adam, a seventh-grader who has been with us for several years, have grown so much thanks to the program. Through riding, Adam has unlocked a whole new level of self-assurance.

He’s incredibly proud that he now has the confidence to ride all the different horses in our program—and ride them well. That bravery in the saddle has carried right over into his classes, giving him the confidence to face tough schoolwork.

Then there is Tryce, another seventh-grader who just finished his third year at HIS. When school started, Tryce was so shy that he hardly spoke a word, usually shrugging or shaking his head instead of using words. But as he spent time working with the horses, a total transformation happened. This school year Tryce has become noticeably more verbal and confident in classes and with his classmates around campus.

Milestones like these in the lives of Adam and Tryce are why we pour time and resources into this horsemanship program. We can't wait to see how Honeycomb and Diesel help our kids continue to heal, grow, and thrive this coming year. _____________

La Sierra No. 1 Adventist School on Forbes Financial Grades List

The group of volunteers was comprised largely of team members involved in the new Epic electronic health record implementation at Adventist Health.

n May 13, more than 50 Adventist Health volunteers gathered at the Adventist Health system office in Roseville for a service project supporting rural communities in Fiji.

Volunteers assembled 1,023 kits designed to address basic foot and wound care especially for people with diabetes. The kits contained socks, closed-toe shoes, and wound-care essentials such as antiseptic, antibiotic ointment, gauze, and bandages— essential items in regions where many people go barefoot. Volunteers added a personal touch by including a handout with a message about the importance of foot care, a photo of the volunteers who assembled the kit, and handwritten greetings.

The project was appealing to Benjamin Ruderman, electronic health record certified systems analyst, in part because it was a tangible way to make a difference.

“Working in IT on the Epic project, it isn’t always easy to feel how our work connects to our mission of living God’s love,” Benjamin said. “Our mission is why I’m still with Adventist Health after 17 years. I started as a first responder, and I’ve seen the impact of that mission on real people, real lives, right in front of me. I also knew I wasn’t alone on the Epic team in the desire to make a difference and to connect with other team members.

My goal for this project was not only to make a positive impact, but also to create an opportunity for our team to make a difference together in a way that was immediately visible.”

The wound care kits will be shipped to Fiji in preparation for an Adventist Health Global Mission trip scheduled for January 2027 when volunteers from Adventist Health Columbia Gorge, Adventist Health Portland, and Adventist Health Tillamook will distribute them. The volunteers will also provide diabetes screenings, wound assessment and treatment, and community-based education on diabetes management and foot care.

“Adventist Health will be taking wound care specialists based in our hospitals—both nurses and physicians— directly to the community level,” said John Schroer, Adventist Health director for Global Mission. “It’s a winwin for us to be able to leverage the knowledge of these experts to expand access to care around the world.”

This initiative is part of a collaboration between Adventist Health Global Mission and the 10,000 Toes Campaign, an organization based in Australia dedicated to combating diabetes across the South Pacific. Life in these tropical climates comes with opportunities to walk barefoot, but this also means increased risk of cuts and scrapes on the feet. For individuals with diabetes, without proper care these wounds can lead to serious complications, including amputations.

“I have coworkers with family in Fiji and coworkers born in Fiji. I also know many people affected by diabetes, so when John presented this particular project, it really hit home,” Benjamin said. “As we were working on the kits, I felt overwhelming gratitude for the generosity of time and effort from my teammates. I also felt joy in the camaraderie I witnessed and humility in having the opportunity to be a part of the healing picture in such a tangible way.” ____________________

Volunteers Assemble Foot-Care Kits for Global Mission Project in Fiji

he numbers are in from the annual America’s College Financial Grades by Forbes magazine, and La Sierra University’s report card shows strong institutional financial health, outpacing many others on a list of more than 900 schools around the nation, including its peer institutions.

On May 22, Forbes published its annual financial grades, which assesses the fiscal fitness of more than 900 private, not-for-profit higher education institutions with enrollments greater than 500 full-time students. Of the 11 Seventhday Adventist universities and colleges in the North American Division and graded by Forbes, La Sierra’s financial grade of B+ tops the list. Loma Linda University, which is also part of the North American Division's higher education system, was not included in the Forbes report.

Additionally, out of 53 California schools graded, La Sierra University scored higher than the University of Southern California, Biola University, University of Redlands, Point Loma Nazarene, and California Baptist University, among many others. La Sierra is among only three schools in California that landed a B+ grade, joining the University of San Diego and the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena.

Forbes indicates that nearly half of the colleges graded for the 2026 list scored a C or lower, with 27% of schools landing the lowest grade of D. La Sierra’s B+ grade represents a 3.32 GPA. Forbes uses 10 measures to determine

a school’s grade point average on financial soundness based on data from the Department of Education’s National Center for Educational Statistics and consulting firm Perspective Data Science. Forbes notes that its methodology includes data that focuses on schools’ true liquidity, or the ability of an institution to convert assets into cash quickly without incurring a drop in the asset’s market value.

The report card arrives during a particularly challenging season in higher education, which education leaders frequently describe and address through a four-element lens of volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity, or VUCA. In a newsletter capping the school year, which ended last month, La Sierra University President Christon Arthur invoked the current VUCA environment as a backdrop for the significance of La Sierra’s substantive financial grade in Forbes.

“Enrollment pressures, shifting federal funding, and declining public confidence in the sector are reshaping the landscape around us. Yet amid these challenges, La Sierra is not merely surviving.

We are deeply rooted and rising,” he wrote.

“The best of La Sierra University is still ahead of us,” he said. “We welcome all to our table as we travel this journey of transformation and growth, continuously in pursuit of our mission to change lives through the pursuit of truth, service to others, and the knowledge of God.”’ ____________________

he Loma Linda University Health Board of Trustees this year named Paul Herrmann, MD, PhD, vice dean for Academic Affairs within the School of Medicine, as the new provost of Loma Linda University. He succeeded Ron Carter, PhD, who served in the role since 2008 and announced last year that he planned to retire.

In his new capacity as provost, Dr. Herrmann will oversee academic affairs across LLU’s eight schools, guiding educational quality and accreditation, faculty development, and interprofessional education and research initiatives, while ensuring strong alignment with the university’s mission and values. He will continue to provide pathology leadership across Loma Linda University Medical Center and its hospitals, serving as CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments) director for both the Medical Center and Children’s Hospital clinical laboratories.

“Dr. Herrmann is a respected academic leader whose deep commitment to mission and proven ability to guide complex educational enterprises make him exceptionally well-suited for this role,” said Richard Hart, MD, DrPH, who served as president of Loma Linda University Health through the end of June. “His thoughtful leadership and collaborative approach will be instrumental as Loma Linda University continues to grow programs, innovate in health sciences education, and expand its global impact.”

Dr. Herrmann’s connection to Loma Linda University spans decades. A graduate of the LLU School of Medicine, he earned an MD after completing a PhD in Chemistry. Following medical school, he completed residency and fellowship training at the National Cancer Institute and Loma Linda University Medical Center.

“I am delighted to serve Loma Linda University in this capacity,” Dr. Herrmann said. “I look forward to continuing the strong LLUH tradition of combining education and health care by working closely with our talented faculty, staff, students, and leadership team as we advance our teaching and healing mission and prepare the next generation to serve with skill, compassion, and purpose.” ____________________

Introduction to Dentistry at PUC:

Shaping Students for Their Careers

or over 35 years, Pacific Union College (PUC) has offered the introduction to dentistry course, taught by alumni dentists from Loma Linda University School of Dentistry (LLUSD) and PUC. By testing their hand-eye skills and personality characteristics, this course has given pre-dental students early exposure to the field, preparing them for future careers in dentistry or dental hygiene.

Since 2012, PUC and LLUSD alum James Yoo has been the class and lab instructor. The eight students in his class this quarter have expressed their appreciation of this class being the first step into their careers. “The students are wonderful and eager to learn when they show up to class,” said Dr. Yoo. “It is very rewarding on a personal level to give back to PUC in this little way.”

In his experience, PUC’s introduction to dentistry class helps with the most common challenge firstyear dental students face: the wax lab. This segment is extremely helpful as they learn the anatomy of each tooth and start training their eyes to the details required in dentistry. While this course introduces students to the world of dentistry, they are encouraged to reach out to local or family dentists, volunteer on mission trips, and find shadowing opportunities to gain additional exposure and better understand the field. To help with this, PUC’s pre-dental program invites guest speakers for students to learn from and connect with.

PUC students also have the chance to network with all LLUSD dentists in Napa Valley who are accessible to them, which is very important because it supports their dental school application process.

One student from this year’s class is senior biology and pre-dental student Andrea Maidan, who is also the teacher’s assistant for the class. This coming fall, she will be attending the School of Dentistry at Loma Linda University. She shared that PUC’s introduction to dentistry class has been great for giving her a look into what dental school offers. “It covers various techniques, skills, and concepts that pre-dental students will experience in the future,” said Maidan. “Dr. Yoo is an incredible professor who aims to prepare undergraduate students for what professional or hygiene school has to offer to students.”

Since teaching this course, Dr. Yoo has found that

not a year has gone by when a former student of his has not shared how the introduction to dentistry class made a difference in their education by preparing them for dental school and taking the Dental Admissions Test, instilling further confidence in their career choice.

Dean of the School of Sciences Aimee Wyrick feels lucky to have an alumnus of PUC and LLUSD teach this course. Hearing current students and alumni express their appreciation for this class, which helped them prepare for dental school and their careers, is an example of how impactful and immersive it is, offering hands-on experience and showcasing the realities of the field. “We are committed to providing this realworld experience,” said Wyrick. “We want our students to be well informed and thus ‘eyes wide open’ as they pursue dentistry.” ____________________

Living Water Fil-Am Hosts Women’s Week of Prayer in Las Vegas

Nevada-Utah Conference Hosts Spring Pathfinder Camporee at Zion Ponderosa

F

rom April 30 to May 3, the Nevada-Utah Conference Youth Ministries Department hosted a special Pathfinder Camporee at Zion Ponderosa Ranch in Utah. The event was organized in response to several Las Vegas–area clubs being unable to attend the upcoming June Conference Camporee due to travel costs and scheduling conflicts.

Pathfinder and Adventurer leaders collaborated to plan and execute a meaningful weekend. Participating clubs included Mountain View, Living Water Fil-Am, Salem, Torre Fuerte, and Paraiso, with additional Pathfinders from the Maranatha club joining on Sabbath.

Campers engaged in a variety of honors.

Pathfinder activities included Drilling and Marching, Fire Building, Soccer, Orienteering, Basic Rescue, Volleyball, Communication, and Felt. Adventurers completed honors such as Colors/Markers, Tie-Dye, Photo Fun, Animals and Their Homes, and Hiking with a scavenger hunt.

the services. A praise team composed of young people from various churches led music, while a mass choir—made up of Pathfinders and Adventurers from participating clubs—added to the spirit of worship.

On Sabbath afternoon, campers shared their talents through a program featuring singing, instrumental music, acting, and other creative gifts.

Set in a wooded landscape with scenic mountain views, the camporee provided an ideal setting for fellowship and spiritual growth. Many campers expressed appreciation for both the environment and the overall experience.

Looking ahead, the Nevada-Utah Conference eagerly anticipates its conference-wide Pathfinder Camporee, scheduled for June 18-21 at Weber Crossing Campground in Henefer, Utah. Pathfinders and Adventurers from across the conference are expected to gather for another powerful opportunity for fellowship, learning, and spiritual renewal. ____________________

omen from across the Las Vegas Valley gathered at Living Water Fil-Am church for its annual Women’s Week of Prayer, held under the theme “Becoming Her in Christ.” The week-long event provided an opportunity for worship, spiritual growth, fellowship, and encouragement as attendees explored what it means to become the women God has called them to be.

Each evening featured a different speaker who shared biblical insights and personal testimonies that highlighted God’s faithfulness and transforming power.

The week’s speakers included Claudia Arevalo Yutuc on Monday, Julie Yutuc on Tuesday, Eddine Belcourt on Wednesday, Dacyl Galicia-Silveira on Thursday, and Cassie Navarro on Friday. Through Scripture, testimony, music, and prayer, each presenter encouraged attendees to embrace God’s purpose, trust His leading, and reflect Christ in their daily lives.

Adding a unique dimension to the week, Dr. Erin Jenkins, a dual-certified family and psychiatric nurse practitioner, presented special women’s health nuggets on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings. Her presentations addressed topics related to physical, emotional, and mental well-being, emphasizing the importance of caring for the whole person—mind, body, and spirit.

One of the most meaningful aspects of the week was the spirit of connection that developed among the women in attendance. Through worship, testimony, prayer, and fellowship, participants found encouragement not only in the messages that were presented but also in one another’s experiences and faith journeys.

“During the Women’s Week of Prayer at Living Water Fil-Am, we were blessed to walk alongside women from different backgrounds as they shared their unique

testimonies of faith and what it means to have ‘Become Her in Christ,’” said Cassie Navarro, Women’s Ministries leader. “Each story reflected God’s love, grace, and transforming power at work in their lives.”

Navarro said she was deeply encouraged by the women who courageously shared their journeys through song, testimony, health presentations, and the messages God placed on their hearts. “It was truly inspiring to witness how God is moving through His daughters to uplift, strengthen, and encourage one another in faith,” she said.

Attendee and speaker Eddine Belcourt reflected on the impact of the gathering. “There is something powerful about genuine connection among women,” Belcourt shared. “When we are willing to be vulnerable about our journeys with Christ, we create space to support, uplift, and strengthen one another.” She added that the week strengthened not only her connection with the women around her but also her relationship with Christ, serving as “a beautiful reminder that we were never meant to walk this journey alone.”

The Women’s Week of Prayer at Living Water Fil-Am church demonstrated the power of Christ-centered fellowship and wholistic ministry, leaving attendees encouraged, inspired, and drawn closer to Him. ____________________

SECC Celebrates the Ordination of Verlon Strauss

O

n March 12, Matheson Chapel on the campus of La Sierra University was filled with friends, family, and colleagues to celebrate a meaningful moment for the Southeastern California Conference (SECC): the ordination of SECC Treasurer Verlon Strauss.

While ordination in the Seventh-day Adventist Church is typically reserved for pastors, this service was conducted in special recognition to highlight the evident ministry of an individual in a non-pastoral role. Strauss’ ministry extends beyond his desk into faithful service in all areas of church life. Having served as treasurer for nearly 15 years, Strauss’ leadership has been evident not only in financial stewardship but through a ministry-minded approach to his role.

Strauss’ journey into church service began shortly after college with the General Conference Auditing Service. Although he briefly worked for Ernst & Young, he described a consistent desire to return to church service, eventually serving in key financial leadership roles at Loma Linda University before joining SECC. “I have worked for the church in some capacity over the last 36 years and have found it very rewarding,” he said.

Throughout his career, Strauss points to moments of transition as affirmations of his calling. “Being asked to serve in the various roles showed me that Someone else was looking out for me,” he shared. “Even my first hiring with the GC Auditing Service was somewhat of an affirmation that I was where I should be.”

As conference treasurer, Strauss describes his role as one that allows him to support ministry in practical ways. “I see the position of treasurer as one that does not just work numbers, but one that can make an impact on a broad spectrum of organizations,” he shared. In his service, Strauss has contributed his skills of accounting to ensure a financially healthy conference. From supporting churches that are completing building projects to assisting schools in need, he finds purpose in enabling ministry to thrive.

48 Years in Ministry:

Pastor Mike Leno Retires from Pastoral Ministry

A

fter eight meaningful years of ministry at Azure Hills church, Associate Pastor for Worship and Nurture Michael Leno was celebrated for retirement this June. Although entering retirement, Leno will continue serving in a parttime capacity.

Leno’s journey in ministry spans 48 years, beginning in June 1978 when he started as an intern pastor directly after graduating from Walla Walla College as a double major in music and theology. His path has taken him across the country, serving congregations in Oregon, Michigan, Arizona, and Georgia before arriving in California in 2006.

Throughout his nearly five decades of ministry, Leno has served in diverse roles—as an eighth-grade teacher, religion editor and announcer at a radio station, and church planter.

Continuing his commitment to theological education, Leno earned his MA in religion with highest honors from the La Sierra School of Divinity in 2011 while pastoring the Ontario church. He received the President's Award for his master's thesis, Hell Under Construction: The Fate of the Wicked in 2nd Temple Jewish Literature. Before joining Azure Hills in 2018, he served as lead pastor of the Ontario and Palm Springs churches in the Southeastern California Conference.

"In my 48 years, this is the best job I've had," Leno shared when reflecting on his time at Azure Hills.

he Hispanic Women’s Retreat held at Pine Springs Ranch from April 10-12 was centered around the powerful theme "Approved." This message resonated deeply with each attendee to remind them of divine affirmation.

Guest speaker Yami Bazan, president of Union College, delivered an incredibly impactful address that communicated the core truth that the women listening had already been approved by God. Her words inspired and uplifted the spirits of the over 300 women gathered there, creating a vibrant atmosphere of praise, spiritual renewal, and heartfelt fellowship.

A particularly moving highlight of the retreat was the special recognition bestowed upon Lupita Aragon and Martha Perez. They were honored for 35 years of dedicated service to Women's Ministries, a testament to their unwavering commitment. The surprise was orchestrated by their husbands, adding an emotional and personal touch to the celebration.

Cindy Baez contributed significantly to the spiritual atmosphere with her heartwarming and inspiring devotional messages. The women were also privileged to have Yohalmo Saravia, vice president of Hispanic Ministries, in attendance, who offered a special blessing.

Beyond the profound spiritual sessions, the retreat featured a delightful social element with a Kentucky Derby theme. Participants embraced this creative opportunity, decorating personalized hats that beautifully told their unique life stories, fostering camaraderie and shared experiences.

Among his most cherished memories are marrying Starla, who pastored alongside Mike, teaching in Grace Notes Sabbath School and LIFT, leading small group studies on the teachings of Jesus, and reviving the church orchestra. "I love working with our staff and volunteers at Azure Hills," he said. "For that reason, it is hard to retire.”

As Leno transitions, he looks forward to collaborating more with Starla in teaching and writing, spending precious time with his children and grandchildren, and enjoying long bike rides. SCC Adventurer Fun Day 2026: “We Are Family”

T

his spring, more than 600 participants gathered at Glendale Adventist Academy for the Southern California Conference (SCC) Adventurer Fun Day organized by SCC Youth Ministries. More than 30 Adventurer clubs came together for a joyful day centered around this year’s theme: “We Are Family.”

The day began with an opening ceremony where instructions were shared and everyone was encouraged to enjoy the activities and build friendships. Paulo Tenorio, SCC youth ministries director, shared an inspiring message with the children and families.

Adventurers ages 4 to 9, their families, directors, and church leaders enjoyed a full day of activities, laughter, and fellowship. The event included fun stations such as shaved ice, crafts, a scavenger hunt, balloon making, playing in the jumper, obstacle courses, face painting, archery, and water bubbles. Everywhere around campus, smiles and excitement filled the air as Adventurers connected with friends old and new.

Several Adventurers shared their excitement about the day’s activities.

“This is a beautiful day,” shared a young participant from Glendale Spanish church. “I like all the games. They were very fun, and I am happy to be here.”

“All the racing games are fun because you race with other people and they race with you,” said an Adventurer from Los Olivos Spanish church.

Another child from Lancaster Spanish church shared, “What I liked about this was the giant bubbles and all the fun things we had—like the snow cones. That was good!”

During the program, Adventurers also received a spiritual message of God’s love and His call to live as part of His family. At the closing ceremony, children were blessed with small presents as a special reminder of the joy and lessons learned that day.

The theme for this last season was “Standing Firm While Standing Out,” showing youth how to tangibly support their faith. Some topics included, “Why do we have Sabbath on Saturday?” and “What’s the difference between cussing and cursing?” Echo works to build on the foundation of beliefs the youth learned as kids and teaches them to defend their faith. As Ellen G. White wrote, “The Lord has appointed the youth to be his helping hand” (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 7, p. 64).

She specifies the importance of helping the youth in our community become strong defenders of Christianity and messengers of the good news of God. Weekly attendance at Echo averages about 27 people. Students from Glendale Adventist Academy and the youth from Canoga Park church have attended, plus students from public schools such as Newbury Park High School, Camarillo High School, and Agoura High School have joined. With this variety of people, one might worry that there’d be exclusion or situations where people seem to be left out. But what’s interesting about Echo is that there is a point in the evening when the youth are separated into groups with different individuals they may not know for a chance to get to know new people.

Echo just started in the spring of 2025, and it is getting better every season. Pastor Saenz and the youth leaders are working hard to make sure everyone has a good Friday evening to welcome us into the Sabbath. With the music and sermon, Echo is really a growing community that is striving to make a change in our youth. ____________________

One Adventurer simply shared, “We learned that we are all part of God’s family.”

One of the most memorable moments was the activity called “Be the Light.” During the interactive presentation, Tenorio asked questions and invited the children to choose between the “light” side or the “dark” side, depending on whether an action was right or wrong—for example, sharing food with someone, booing someone, or helping someone who fell. The Adventurers enthusiastically participated, making the lesson both meaningful and fun.

Throughout the event, the spirit of teamwork and fellowship was clear. Families, leaders, and children enjoyed spending time together while creating lasting memories and embracing the message “We Are Family: Together. Grow. Go.” The SCC Adventurer Fun Day was a beautiful reminder that when we come together in faith, friendship, and love, we truly become one family in Christ. Together we grow and together we go. ____________________

wice a year, Echo youth ministry from The Place Adventist Fellowship church meets for an eight-week series in the fall and spring for worship, teaching, and fellowship. This ministry is led almost entirely by youth who attend Newbury Park Adventist Academy (NPAA).

This doesn’t mean that only NPAA students go to Echo—roughly 46 percent of the people who come to Echo do not attend NPAA. “I love how students from other schools step into a new environment to experience Christianity and connect with people that they have never met,” said Jenna, community service youth leader.

Including Jenna, there are eight youth leaders who help Echo run smoothly every Friday. Some of their roles include social media and outreach, fundraising, music, community service, and vespers. Without them, this organization would not be able to work.

Urijah Saenz, youth pastor of The Place, leads the ministry. His idea for Echo was to “recognize the personal and spiritual needs of this new generation and then to train and empower young leaders to build a community that fulfills those needs.”

SCC Equip Training Comes Back for a Second Year

his May, hundreds of leaders in SCC churches gathered for training and fellowship from all areas of the conference—from Santa Barbara to Rolling Hills—for Equip26. Thirteen breakout sessions included classes titled “Reaching Gen Z Today,” “Seeking the Shalom of the City: The Church in the New Mission Field,” “The Steward’s Calling: Managing God’s Resources With Integrity,” and more.

“The goal of Equip26,” shared SCC Executive Secretary and Ministerial Director Danny Chan, “is to resource and inspire ministry leaders in our conference to deepen and expand their reach in the communities they serve. We recognize that Equip attendees are often the hardest working and most devoted leaders in the local church, so gathering them for equipping is the least we can do to support them in ministry.”

Starting with a general session, all attendees came together for a short welcome message before breakout sessions began and people dispersed to the classes that interested them and were most relevant to their ministry.

Beyond the training aspect, Equip26 allowed for connection between members whose churches are in different parts of the conference. The day ended with everyone gathered together one last time to hear about similar events coming up, like Impact26 in September.

“The event made me feel inspired to become a better leader, and it also made me want to inspire others to be a better leader as well,” shared Isai Bercian from Lancaster Spanish church. “It made me think of ministry in a different way that I never thought of before.”

“Healthy churches do not happen by accident,” Chan noted. “They are cultivated through intentional investment in leaders. Equip26 was created to bring pastors, educators, and local church leaders together around practical tools, shared resources, and meaningful relationships. We believe that when leaders gather and share resources, our churches become healthier and our communities are better served.”

“There’s so much information that’s given. It can be used in so many different ways. And no matter the age— from young children to my age, seniors—it’s just so much to learn and you can take back to many others,” Aarona Pollard from Philadelphian church said with a smile. “So if you’re not sure about attending, come. You’ll love it.” ____________________

T

his summer, San Fernando Spanish church celebrated decades of ministry. A small group that would become San Fernando Spanish church met to worship together for the first time in the 1940s. A church building was later purchased, where the congregation met until a 1971 earthquake damaged the building beyond repair. But this didn’t dim the congregation’s faith—they met elsewhere in the area to continue their mission and ministry.

All the while, the 200 members were committed to rebuilding a church of their own. Just a mile and a half away from the church’s first home, construction began on a new church building. In June 1976, the new church building was dedicated. Five years later, construction began once again, this time on a multipurpose building on the church property, featuring a gym, dining room, kitchen, community center, and more, completed in 1982.

The history of this church tells a story filled with twists and turns. But this summer, this history culminated in a celebration focused on God’s faithfulness through it all. Members, former pastors, and guests gathered to recognize God’s working in the San Fernando Spanish church throughout 50 years with songs of praise, prayers of gratitude, testimonies, and messages of encouragement.

a beacon of light in this community,” he said. “May it continue to bring hope, meet needs, and be known as a healthy, loving community because this church exists here.” Royal Harrison, SCC executive vice president, then presented the church with a check to support the work of evangelism.

“A 50-year anniversary is a precious moment for immigrant churches celebrating God’s faithfulness over the years,” said Kyoshin Ahn, executive secretary for the North American Division, who shared the morning’s message.

“The best years of this church do not have to be behind us,” Ahn declared, “it is before us. Amen?”

Ahn claimed the promise of growth in Christ found in Philippians 1:6, saying, “May that be the case with this church.” ____________________

God’s Grace Sustains His Call

W

e are drawn to stories. Stories stay with us because they touch the places where arguments and explanations cannot reach. They move us because we recognize ourselves in them. We see our fears, hopes, failures, and longings reflected in the lives of others.

Scripture understands this human need for story.

The Bible is not merely a collection of doctrines and commands; it is filled with narratives of flawed men and women trying to understand how God was working in their lives.

Among those stories, the story of Saul has always unsettled me.

Saul begins with promise. He is chosen by God, anointed by Samuel, empowered by the Spirit, and elevated from obscurity to leadership. The biblical text makes it clear that Saul did not seek greatness for himself. In fact, when Samuel publicly presented him as king, Saul was hiding among the baggage (1 Samuel 10:20-22). God took a man from an insignificant tribe and placed him in a position he never imagined for himself.

There is something profoundly human about that moment. Saul did not look like a man certain of his calling. He looked overwhelmed by it. And perhaps

that is where many believers live most of the time.

We often speak about a call as though it arrives with clarity and certainty. But for many, it comes wrapped in fear, insecurity, and self-doubt. We feel unqualified. We compare ourselves with others.

We wonder whether we truly belong among those whom God has called.

People who had known Saul asked each other: “Is Saul also among the prophets?” (1 Samuel 10:11, NIV). The question sounds surprised, even skeptical.

Saul suddenly found himself among others who seemed spiritually authentic, spiritually certain. And somehow he was standing there with them.

There have been moments when I have felt like that. Moments when I looked around at pastors, leaders, theologians, and believers whose faith seemed stronger, deeper, and more genuine than mine. Moments when I felt as though I was simply trying to imitate what faith was supposed to look like. I knew the language. I knew the expectations. I knew how to behave and what to say. Yet inwardly I often wrestled with uncertainty, weakness, and the uncomfortable feeling that perhaps I was merely standing among the prophets without truly being one of them.

And yet, in spite of all that, God’s grace continued to follow me.

That is the remarkable thing about grace. Grace does not wait for perfection before it begins its work. Grace meets us in our weakness. God does not call only the spiritually mature or the emotionally secure. Again and again, He calls hesitant, broken, uncertain, deeply flawed people.

Moses doubted himself. Gideon hid in fear. Elijah collapsed in despair. Jonah ran away. Peter denied Christ. Thomas doubted. Saul himself became a tragic and deeply conflicted figure. The Bible never hides the humanity of those whom God calls.

Perhaps God’s power is most clearly revealed when it works through human weakness.

God’s grace is not merely forgiveness after failure; it is the sustaining presence of God in the middle of our inadequacy. It is what keeps believers moving forward even when they feel spiritually exhausted, emotionally uncertain, or painfully aware of their limitations.

Looking back at my own life, there was no lightning-bolt moment in which everything suddenly became clear. There were simply doors that opened, people who encouraged me, opportunities that appeared, and the persistent sense that God kept leading me forward despite myself.

That realization changes the way we understand both grace and calling. We often imagine that God’s work depends upon our strength and confidence.

But Scripture repeatedly shows otherwise. God’s purposes move forward through fragile people. His grace sustains imperfect believers who stumble, question, fail, and begin again.

The tragedy of Saul’s story is not simply that he failed. Every human being fails. The deeper tragedy is that Saul gradually lost the ability to trust and surrender himself to God. Fear, jealousy, insecurity, and self-preservation slowly consumed him. The man who once meekly stood among the prophets eventually became captive to his own inner darkness.

Saul’s story warns about the danger of allowing fear and insecurity to harden into bitterness and pride. But it also reminds us that God’s grace was present from the beginning. God pursued Saul and empowered him. God gave him opportunities to obey, trust, and grow. The tragedy is not that grace

was absent. The tragedy is that Saul increasingly resisted the transforming work of grace.

Believers today face the same struggle. Many Christians quietly fear that they are not enough— not spiritual enough, faithful enough, strong enough.

We compare ourselves with others who appear more confident and victorious. We sit in churches, attend Bible studies, sing hymns, teach classes, and still secretly wonder whether we truly belong among the people of faith.

Yet the gospel has never been about the triumph of human strength. It is about the persistence of divine grace. God’s grace is not sustained by our perfection. He continues calling, restoring, strengthening and carrying believers even through weakness and uncertainty. Sometimes we imagine that grace only enters after we have finally become spiritually mature. But grace is what carries us toward maturity in the first place.

The Christian life is not the story of strong people succeeding for God. It is the story of weak people continually sustained by the mercy of God. When I reflect on my own journey, I see many moments where grace was quietly present long before I recognized it. Doors opened unexpectedly.

Opportunities emerged that I never planned.

Relationships strengthened me when I felt uncertain. God remained faithful during seasons when my own faith felt fragile.

Like Saul, I often found myself wondering how I arrived there at all. But perhaps that is precisely where grace does its greatest work. Not when we feel most impressive, but when we realize how dependent we truly are on God. The beauty of the gospel is that believers do not stand before God because they have mastered faith perfectly. They stand there because God’s grace continues to sustain imperfect people. Grace accompanies us through our uncertainty and weakness, our fears and failures.
