As we look back on the incredible 2016-17 season, we warmly remember the many outstanding concerts we heard together, the educational outreach we achieved in local schools, the engagement we attained with our local residents and the sustaining philanthropy we received from our board and donors who support everything we do. We are pleased to share an overview of Pacific Symphony’s fiscal year 2016-17 through this report, providing artistic highlights, program results, financial summaries and the successful outcomes of our work in building new audiences and reaching our fundraising goals. Pacific Symphony thanks you, our dedicated donors, subscribers and volunteers, who are responsible for these achievements during the year.

At the top of last year’s important accomplishments is the ratification of a new collective bargaining agreement with our union musicians. This landmark agreement includes new service guarantees for our musicians, and wage increases totaling 10.4% over the next five years, providing for meaningful growth in performance opportunities. Also notable was our move to new administrative headquarters in Irvine, which was made possible through the generosity of Board Member Charlie Zhang. Charlie not only personally oversaw the renovation of our building, but micromanaged the smallest details to ensure the comfort, safety and security of our staff and board. He encouraged a dedicated New Building Campaign which offered office-naming opportunities for select donors, and raised over $500,000 with the leadership of campaign chairs David Collins and Seth Seigel.

Through our ongoing work to form resilient community and regional partnerships, the Symphony has increased the depth and breadth of the programs it offers to the Orange County community. This includes our Sunday matinee series at SOKA Performing Arts Center, our enduring partnership with Chapman University and Musco Center for the Arts, the 20 nonprofits which help to deliver our Heartstrings community services and the comprehensive music education in 32 Class Act partner schools, a program which served over 15,600 K-8 schoolchildren.

Our beloved music director, Carl St.Clair, is also dedicated to establishing lasting relationships with talented artists, musicians and artistic leaders, and forming bonds with composers and academic scholars who help to advance Pacific Symphony’s legacy. Now as we look back on the past year, we find Pacific Symphony one year richer in experience, and one year wiser in planning for its future.

Adding to the fire which fuels our inspiration is the ongoing generosity, dedication and undying commitment of you — our patrons ­— who spark and ignite the organization’s flames. As we continue to maintain a balanced budget, while developing and implementing new innovative programs and engagement activities, Pacific Symphony’s yearly accomplishments simply would not be possible without your support. We are eternally grateful to our Board of Directors, Board of Counselors, corps of volunteers and all the many support organizations and donors who focus their time and talent on the success of Pacific Symphony. Dazzling Guest Artists

DECEMBER 2017 Dear Friends: As I look back on the 2016-17 season with great joy and pride, I am reminded that your faithful and continuing support of Pacific Symphony makes our success possible. This past year, we shared many wonderful memories together, both onstage and off, through concerts that showcased the brilliant talents of the members of our orchestra and guest musicians.

We set a new box office record for our opera engagement in February, surpassing last year’s record-breaking total. “Aida” has earned its place now as the top-selling concert engagement in Pacific Symphony history! The three unforgettable performances were truly extraordinary, with a unique staging that included full costumes, desert sand and pyramids, drama, action and extraordinary vocal performances by our guest artists and the Pacific Chorale. Who can forget the beauty and radiance of Kelebogile Besong as Aida, the heroic Arnold Rawls as Radames, the remarkable Milena Kitic as Amneris, the valiant Mark Delavan as Amonasro and the innovative Stage Director/Designer Mary Birnbaum?

Of course, we also fondly recall the beginning of the 2017-18 season, which began with a spectacular appearance by the incomparable Renée Fleming, Metropolitan Opera star and American treasure. The season also celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall. We had many additional illustrious artists perform with us this year, including pianists Joaquin Achúcarro, Jeremy Denk, Olga Kern, Louis Lortie, Orli Shaham, Haochen Zhang and Zhang Zuo, to name a few (the full list of guest artists appears on the next page). In addition, we had two world premieres this season by Conrad Tao and Composer-in-Residence Narong Prangcharoen.

Certainly one of the highlights was featuring works by living composers, such as Frank Ticheli, John Adams (in honor of his 70th birthday) and Peter Boyer’s “Ellis Island: The Dream of America,” which was filmed for a PBS “Great Performances” broadcast in 2018. This work, more than any other, seemed to evoke a great emotional response from our audiences, bringing back past memories and deep feelings. From its stirring visual images and photos from the Ellis Island Archives, to its soaring and inspirational music, “Ellis Island” was one of the most memorable works presented by the Symphony.

But perhaps our most profound and moving concert engagement was the season finale of Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, “Resurrection.” This monumental work was part of the retirement celebration honoring Pacific Chorale’s John Alexander, our dear friend and the Chorale’s artistic director for 45 years. Mahler’s masterpiece requires skill and expertise, which our musicians mastered in admirable fashion, and they filled the hall with the wonderment and elation of the ethereal and spiritual work. It was a true joy to perform, and gratifying to see our audiences’ heartfelt reaction and appreciation.

As John and Joann have already mentioned, we are thankful for the new collective bargaining agreement we have ratified with our respected and valued union musicians. We are eternally grateful to the strong, outstanding and admirable artists that comprise our Pacific Symphony. They are the creators and source of the marvelous sounds that are generated in our hall.

Among Pacific Symphony’s milestone accomplishments in 2016-17 are the following: u Presenting the most successful Opera Vocal Initiative

engagement during a sold-out run of Verdi’s “Aida” in February 2017. Year after year, the orchestra’s opera presentations earn the highest box office sales of the season. “Aida” set a new record for the highest grossing box office sales in Pacific Symphony history.

u Earning a prestigious invitation to appear as part of the

2017-18 season at Carnegie Hall, performing a tribute concert to the venue’s Composer-in-Residence Philip Glass, who celebrates his 80th birthday.

u Filming the monumental and moving “Ellis Island: The

Dream of America” by PBS “Great Performances” for a national broadcast in June 2018.

u Premiering another new commission by Thai-American

composer Narong Prangcharoen entitled “Concerto for Four Principal Winds” during the year, as well as a world premiere by pianist/composer Conrad Tao for the opening of the season.

u Featuring the exquisite Renée Fleming in a pre-season

concert in advance of her retirement and final performance at the Metropolitan Opera this year.

u Taking home the coveted first prize at Summa Cum

Laude International Youth Music Festival in Vienna by the Pacific Symphony Youth Wind Ensemble, led by their Music Director Gregory X. Whitmore.

u Completing the organization’s most recent fiscal year on

June 30, 2017 with another balanced operational budget, marking 27 years of exemplary and consistent fiscal oversight.

u Celebrating the Chinese New Year with a second annual

Gala in February 2017 that welcomes key leaders and community entrepreneurs in a lavish fundraising dinner.

Sharing their artistic vision, Maestro St.Clair and the musicians of Pacific Symphony generated many memorable moments onstage which offered attendees an inventive, thought-provoking and motivating season of musical memories. Highlights included: u Using the talents of seven Hollywood actors for

“Ellis Island: The Dream of America” which featured Barry Bostwick, Lesley Fera, Camryn Manheim, Lucas Near-Verbrugghe, Michael Nouri, Samantha Sloyan and Kira Sternbach.

u Highlighting the superior musical talents of such

enormously gifted guest artists as pianist Jeremy Denk playing Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 1, and perennial favorite Joaquín Achúcarro performing Grieg’s Piano Concerto.

u Concluding the season with Mahler’s remarkable and

unforgettable “Resurrection” Symphony with Pacific Chorale in honor of John Alexander’s retirement.

Changing Lives and Opening Doors u A total of 6,018 Heartstrings guests from 41 non-profit organizations attended Pacific Symphony concerts free of charge. Many experienced symphonic music for the first time. u Heartstrings’ Music and Wellness Initiatives partnered with local agencies to impact the lives of residents ranging from children on the autism spectrum to families fighting homelessness. u Santa Ana Strings finished its third year in partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Ana with a new multilevel curriculum. A total of 63% of students expressed their desire to continue participating in music programs, while 100% of parents would like to see the program continue and would re-enroll their child in Santa Ana Strings.

Impacting and Connecting with New Communities

u In partnership with the Irvine Chinese School, the

Symphony held its second annual Lantern Festival, a free family-friendly celebration in the concert hall lobby which featured: • 4,159 guests, 180 lanterns displayed and over 50 volunteers engaged; • 331 community performers, including members of Pacific Symphony, the Youth Ensembles and various groups performing western and traditional Chinese music and dance.

u Presented in partnership with the Irvine Chinese School,

Strings for Generations provided a unique opportunity for families to play and learn about music together.

Celebrating its third season, program participants reported positive impacts on many levels including: musical growth, improved relationships and improved perception of Pacific Symphony. u Sonic Kitchen featured two concerts during the season at the Orange County Center for Contemporary Art, transforming their gallery and experimenting with experience design. New streams of earned revenue were established through the program. At the concerts held in March and June of 2017, there were no current subscribers of those surveyed, while 15% had subscribed in the past and 85% had sporadically bought tickets in the past.

Transformative Musical Experiences for All Ages u Pacific Symphony Youth Ensembles • A third season of offering free admission to the public to all PSYE concerts took place again in 2016-17 thanks to the efforts of the PSYE Board of Directors and many generous donors. Over 6,000 attendees came to PSYE’s 16-17 season concerts.

• Approximately 600 young musicians auditioned to play in one of the three PSYE ensembles, with just 225 positions available.

u arts-X-press served 137 students from nine school • At the end of the season, PSYE graduated 55 high districts and 61 schools. Financial aid was supplied for school seniors. Many of these graduates went on to more than 61% of students. Marketing and Public Relations Marketing Highlights Audience Building Achievements u Overall box office sales of $6.59 million exceeded goal by approximately $160,000, or 2.5%, and represents a strong 5% year-over-year increase. u Single-ticket revenue of $108,000 for “Nutcracker for Kids” set a new sales record. u Buoyed by nostalgia for the final season at Irvine Meadows, Summer Festival subscriptions increased 10% and single-ticket revenue skyrocketed a whopping 40%! u Single-ticket sales for the “Pedals and Pipes” organ series increased by 10%. u The number of tickets purchased for “Messiah” increased 9%, and revenue increased 17%. u There were 10 sold-out performances: “Aida” (2), Michael Bolton (2), “Nutcracker for Kids” (2), Renée Fleming, “Messiah” and two Café Ludwig concerts. u The first Chinese New Year program attracted a robust audience totaling nearly 1,600 people — 93% of capacity.

Public Relations Highlights

u Pacific Symphony was invited to debut at Carnegie Hall in

April 2018 as part of a special festival celebrating composer Philip Glass. u Peter Boyer’s “Ellis Island” garnered extensive critical acclaim when it was performed in April and filmed by PBS for their prestigious “Great Performances” series. The June 29, 2018 television broadcast date will mark the first-ever national broadcast to originate from the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall. u In-depth profile on Charlie Zhang in Orange Coast Magazine’s “Legends” column. u Award-winning nationally renowned journalist and longtime music critic for The Orange County Register, Tim Mangan, joined Pacific Symphony in the newly created position of writer-in-residence. In May, Tim launched the new Pacific Symphony blog. u Initiated Pacific Symphony’s presence on the popular Chinese social media platform WeChat in July, 2016, with more than 300 additional followers added during Lantern Festival and Chinese New Year festivities in 2017. u First use of Instagram Stories and Facebook Live took place during the Chinese Lantern Festival, opening up these soldout events to new internet audiences.

Pacific Symphony is sustained through significant philanthropy from individuals, foundations and corporations. In total, ticket revenues and performance fees make up less than half the annual cost of the Symphony’s operations. In addition, the Symphony maintains a strong commitment to community engagement and extensive education programs. As a result, more than 40% of the Symphony’s annual audiences hear the orchestra at no personal cost. This is achieved through Heartstrings and many other programs that are supported in part by gifts from thousands of contributors.

In a year of many fundraising accomplishments, the Symphony extends special thanks to the Board of Directors and the Board of Counselors for their extraordinary leadership and generosity, and sincere gratitude to the 2016-17 event chairs who led our fundraising events with great imagination, creative leadership and steadfast tenacity.

Development Highlights u The Annual Fund raised ­over $13.7 million, coupled with funds pledged through the New Building Campaign of more than $500,000. The total raised for 2016-17 was over $14 million. u For the second year in a row, the Zhang Challenge helped raise funds over and above the $250,000 matching gift pledged by Charlie and Ling Zhang, surpassing the goal for year-end giving. u In addition, Charlie Zhang donated his time and talents to the renovation of a larger building and the successful relocation of Pacific Symphony’s administrative headquarters to Irvine. u Highlights of the Annual Fund include: • Fundraising events netted over $2.1 million, constituting 15% of total annual support.

• The Wine Festival raised $240,000 at its March 11, 2017 event at The Island Hotel.

• The Annual Gala raised $220,000 from its live auction and $628,000 from its Fund-a-Dream campaign, for a total of over $1.5 million at the lavish event on May 6, 2017.
