Dear Pacific Symphony Supporters: We fondly look back at an incredible 40th anniversary season in 2018-19 that was filled with many memorable musical moments, exemplary education and community engagement programs, and a continuing outreach to the local communities and neighborhoods of Orange County. We are pleased to enclose a brief summary of Pacific Symphony’s accomplishments during the year. In an effort to continue to build audiences and reach new artistic heights, we are happily reaching our fundraising goals. Last year, the Symphony raised the most money ever for its Annual Fund through dedicated and loyal patrons, subscribers and donors. We thank you for this outpouring of support which is responsible for our achievements during the year. Under the leadership of our beloved Music Director, Carl St.Clair, Pacific Symphony was invited to join the highest level of national symphony orchestras ranked by the League of American Orchestras, joining the likes of the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic and Philadelphia Orchestra. As a member of Group One, the Symphony is now in the top tier of American music ensembles. This achievement is a reflection of the orchestra’s growing national impact in both artistic and institutional growth, and its increasing stature in the international classical music field. During our Ruby Anniversary season we paid tribute to the 80 professional musicians comprising our orchestra. Their long tenures are testament to the players’ dedication and loyalty. This is extraordinarily demonstrated with 24 of our musicians serving for 30 years or more, and three founding members serving for 40 years. 2

Our Building Communities Initiative is well underway, and last year saw the establishment of new membership organizations. During the season, special concert programs were designed to further strengthen the bonds and partnerships formed with targeted communities in Orange County. Our Nowruz Festival, celebrating the Persian New Year, took place on March 24, 2019 and engaged the Iranian American communities. On April 16, 2019, Verdi’s Requiem was presented as the “Defiant Requiem: Verdi at Terezín” and welcomed support from Jewish Americans through the Joshua’s Horn Society. And of course, the Jade Society, established in 2016, continues stronger than ever. We would be remiss if we didn’t thank our incredible corps of volunteers that comprise our stunning board of directors, board of counselors, committee members and special event chairs. With their remarkable leadership, all special events and galas exceeded their fundraising goals. Equally impressive are the numerous accomplishments by the education and community engagement team and volunteers who are key to the program’s smooth-running operation. Most of all, we must again thank all of you—our loyal patrons—whose faith and support allow us to plan for an exciting future. The accomplishments set forth within this document simply would not be possible without your philanthropic support and loyalty. We are sincerely grateful to all those who have made our progress attainable this year and into the future. Your dedication of time and talent ensures the ongoing success of Pacific Symphony. ARTISTIC HIGHLIGHTS Pacific Symphony’s 40th anniversary marked 29 years of leadership by Music Director Carl St.Clair, 20 years by President John Forsyte, and 20 or more years by 77 of the orchestra’s 82 musicians— including 24 with 30+ years, and three with 40 years of service.
• Three performances of “Madama Butterfly” in February achieved the all-time box office record in Symphony history, exceeding other top sales leaders “Aida,” “Turandot” and “Carmen.” • Pacific Symphony was invited by the League of American Orchestras to join Group One of the leading orchestras in America, alongside the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony and Los Angeles Philharmonic. This places the orchestra in the top tier of American music ensembles and reflects its growing national impact and increasing stature in the music field.
• The Building Communities Initiative was fully launched to reach new communities through membership and special concert presentations. These included the sold-out Nowruz Festival celebrating Persian New Year on March 24, 2019, and the sold-out concert presentation entitled “Defiant Requiem: Verdi at Terezín” on April 16, 2019. In addition, the continuing annual traditions of the Lunar New Year celebration on February 9, 2019, and the community Lantern Festival on March 2, 2019 also supported the initiative.
• Ravel’s one-act opera “L’enfant et les sortilèges” (“The Child and the Magic Spells”) featured a large and talented cast as well as Pacific Chorale. This rarely performed work was a dream realized by Carl who first performed it early during his tenure with Pacific Symphony. The LA Times said “the beauty and depth of this ‘L’enfant’ is in the orchestra, which made a huge effort to prove it has retained its soul. St.Clair captured the flickering orchestral changes with a brilliance that demonstrates both how much the orchestra has grown technically and soulfully over the last quarter century.” • A week-long guitar festival featured musician and curator Pablo Sáinz-Villegas, who also provided a solo recital at the Samueli Theater. The festival included free concerts for the public on the Argyros Plaza, plus visits to college campuses for masterclasses and luncheon events.

EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT HIGHLIGHTS During the 2018-19 season, Pacific Symphony’s education and community engagement programs provided vibrant opportunities for over 50,000 Orange County residents, from infants to seniors, to engage with the magical world of music and the incredible talents of Pacific Symphony musicians. Throughout the year, programs had over 131,000 Touchpoints. Making Music Together Over 20,000 people had the opportunity to actively make music as part of one of Pacific Symphony’s Education and Community Engagement programs, including:

• 45 Santa Ana Strings students, receiving up to four days of instruction each week at the Boys and Girls Club of Santa Ana. • 250 Pacific Symphony Youth Ensembles students, representing the finest talent from Southern California’s high schools and middle schools. • Over 600 community musicians and performers making music at the Lantern Festival. • 54 babies, toddlers, and their parents bonding and building life skills through music at Parent and Me classes at the Orange County Rescue Mission. • 43 parents and children making music together in Strings for Generations, a multi-generational ensemble in partnership with the Irvine Chinese School. • 60 middle school students in arts-X-press creating and performing their own compositions.

Learning and Growing Through Music Powerful and impactful personal and musical growth, including: • The spring performance of the Pacific Symphony Youth Wind Ensemble, Santiago Strings, and Youth Orchestra showcased the multiple talents of young students who achieve noticeable growth during the program. This year, there were 52 graduating seniors who will be attending such universities as UCI, USC, UCLA, Cornell, Vanderbilt, Yale, Stanford and Duke. • Santa Ana Strings students’ music literacy grew from 20% to 51% and violin literacy grew from 37% to 67% over the course of the year, thanks to the over 200 hours of instructions provided to each student. Parents also reported increased confidence and improved social skills in their students. • Class Act partnered with 16,224 students and 675 teachers in 32 schools with 98% of teachers agreeing that the program increased their students’ appreciation for classical music. • Following their participation in arts-X-press, 86% of the middle school-aged students felt more comfortable taking creative risks and talking to new people, with 89% expressing interesting attending more arts events. • 97% of OC Can You Play with Us Chamber Edition adult participants felt they grew as musicians and 100% felt more connected with Pacific Symphony following their participation.

Aided by special gifts for our new Community Concerts (Nowruz, Defiant Requiem, Lunar New Year), along with Board and Maestro Society gifts, total giving was over $10 Million due in part to the celebratory 40th anniversary season. This is a 10% growth over last year and 21% increase from two years ago!
The Symphony’s New Building Communities Initiative Through the Symphony’s Building Communities Initiative, additional membership organizations were formed during the year to support distinct concert programs that were presented during the 40th anniversary season. Each of the following groups were formatted similarly to the initial Jade Society, which was established in 2016 through the work of the New California Arts Fund program.
We are especially grateful for the continued strong support of our Board of Directors, whose total giving was up 29% over the 2017-18 season. Income from Special Events—a major source of contributed income—was up 4% in spite of the fact that we cancelled the Wine Festival after the budget was in place. Our support groups’ net support was up 12%, led by 23% growth in giving from Opera FOCUS. Opera fundraising, in total, had its best year ever, generating $756,000 in support of opera projects (including $195,000 in support for future seasons). Finally, we want to acknowledge the special commitment of the Board of Counselors, led by President CarolAnn Tassios, which contributed a special gift of $100,000 to name the lobby of our offices as the “Board of Counselors’ Lobby” in honor of Carl St.Clair. Generous Sponsors to Lunar New Year Concert Focused on engaging the Asian communities of Orange County, Pacific Symphony is centered on two major annual cultural celebrations: Lunar New Year and Lantern Festival. Lunar New Year is commemorated by many Asian cultures and Pacific Symphony acknowledges the tradition with a gala dinner and special concert. The performance includes renowned guest artists, a customary lion Annual report 2018-19

dance and lobby displays preceded by a lavish dinner. The Lantern Festival is also known as the Festival of a Thousand Lights and is a highlight of the Lunar New Year celebration. Each year, the Symphony floods the indoor and outdoor spaces of the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall to present community performing arts groups, food and beverage samples, craft activities, lantern making, family friendly riddles and puzzles, and a dragon parade. Special recognition goes to Charlie and Ling Zhang for their leadership with this initiative.
The Cyrus Society Through musical programming and prominent guest artists, Pacific Symphony marks the beginning of the Persian New Year with the Nowruz Festival. While the Symphony first presented this event in 2012, the 40th anniversary season began an annual tradition. Translated into “new day” or “rebirth,” Nowruz begins a month-long observation on the first day of spring. Members provide a foundation to ensure the quality and authenticity of this important cultural presentation. Board member Anoosheh Oskouian leads the society’s efforts to welcome the Iranian American community to the Pacific Symphony family. She has joined efforts with the Farhang Foundation, which has been instrumental in the success of The Cyrus Society.

The Joshua’s Horn Society
Celebrating Jewish music and composers, The Joshua’s Horn Society was initially formed to support the presentation of “The Defiant Requiem: Verdi at Terezín” in April 2019. This group is led by Board Vice Chair of Development Scott Seigel who formed a nucleus of generous donors. The Jewish Federation & Family Services generously sponsored this initiative. The society supports annual tribute concerts through classical orchestral performances, which began in 2019 with “The Defiant Requiem.” Future support will continue to honor and celebrate Jewish culture through annual programming.

MARKETING AND PUBLIC RELATIONS HIGHLIGHTS • During 2018-19, there were nearly 97,000 tickets sold across six product lines—classical, Pops, family, chamber, SummerFest, organ—about 700 more than 2017-18.
• New subscription sales grew by 11 percent, with notable increases in six-concert classical packages, three-concert chamber music packages and three-concert SummerFest packages.
• Overall, single ticket revenue grew by 2 percent, led by a 9 percent increase in SummerFest single-ticket sales. • Almost 5,000 people attended Building Communities concerts; many were attending Pacific Symphony for the first time. • Group Sales grew by about one third, largely fueled by interest in special events. • Pacific Symphony is enjoying increased exposure in Southern California. The organization benefited from earned media valued at $7.6 million, a $400,000 increase over 2017-18. • A new branding campaign was launched in May entitled “Live Life Vibrantly,” prominently featuring Pacific Symphony musicians. As part of the campaign, a new logo and images are providing the public with a refreshed look for the orchestra.
