STRONG NATIVE WOMEN BREAKING CYCLES OF VIOLENCE TOGETHER Organizer: Soma de Bourbon, San Jose State University Native American women experience intimate partner violence (IPV), rape, abduction, and murder at higher rates than other racial or ethnic groups. The issue of violence against Native women is an intersectional issue, meaning it is not simply an issue of violence against women, or violence against Native people; rather, it is an issue that is complicated by land dispossession, removal, relocation, historical trauma, and settler colonialism. In this workshop, We will present the findings from three focus group discussions (FGD) with Native women in Santa Clara County that were conducted by Red Earth Women’s Society (REWS) as part of their efforts to address missing and murdered Indigenous people (MMIP). Our research centers Native women’s experiences with and solutions to IPV, child abuse, historical trauma, and MMIP. This is one of the first studies to center the solutions to these problems as understood by Native women.

Since that video's release in the late 90s, which coincided with the last episode of the popular program Ellen, there has been a marked increase in the presence of GLBT characters on television. Against the backdrop of political and social issues affecting the GLBT community, such as gay marriage and AIDS, Further Off the Straight & Narrow takes a close look at sitcoms, reality shows, and premium cable programming as it explores how representations of GLBT characters have become more complex and varied in recent years.

Shigihara, California State University Sacramento Panelists will showcase the 2nd edition, 2025, anthology, Race & Ethnicity: The Sociological Mindful Approach (updated from the 1st edition to reflect the changing world) and how the book can be used in the classroom. The speakers include both book editors and experts in the discipline who will highlight the ways in which the chapters help promote and improve classroom discussions on the complexities of racial and ethnic inequalities. Moreover, they will show how the book aims to encourage students to cultivate a deeper sociological consciousness, prompting critical reflection on race, class, sex/gender, and other systems of oppression. Students will read about subjects like the relationship between the social construction of race and identity development, the dynamics of interracial relationships, Islamophobia, and the loss of home among people of color. Additional readings address how Whiteness influences educational institutions, racialized immigration policies, colonialism, activism with the goal of gaining ground against systemic racism, and more. Our book emphasizes contributions from women and people of color, and this anthology can be assigned in any course with particular attention to race and ethnicity and an aim to hold students accountable for the development of their own sociological consciousness.

Drawing on the firsthand narratives of migrant youth in Los Angeles, California, 22

Stephanie L. Canizales shows that while a lucky few do find reprieve, many are met by resource-impoverished relatives who are unable to support them, exploitative jobs that are no match for the high cost of living, and individualistic social norms that render them independent and alone. Sin Padres, Ni Papeles illuminates how unaccompanied teens who grow up as undocumented low-wage workers navigate unthinkable material and emotional hardship, find the agency and hope that is required to survive, and discover what it means to be successful during the transition to adulthood in the United States.

The title of the film is based on sociologist W.E.B. DuBois’ famous question that he raised in his seminal book, “The Souls of Black Folk.” With the help of Danny Glover, Ed Asner, Henry Rollins, scholars, authors, and activists, we tell the story of systemic racism in America, past and present. The film also features music by Rock & 37

Roll Hall of Fame artist, Jackson Browne. Director Statement How Does It Feel To Be a Problem was the culmination of 6 years of hard work in collaboration with Dr. JW Wiley.

We set out to show how systemic racism had a pervasive presence in the past, but continues to exist and even flourish today. Tapping into some of the top scholars in America and joining with activists and authors, How Does It Feel helps bring the views of W.E.B. DuBois to life with his thoughts resonating as much today as ever. In the words of the immortal John Lewis, “we still have a great deal of work to do.” Director Biography Thomas Keith received his Ph.D. in philosophy from Claremont Graduate University. He has since produced five films with his fourth film Bullied enjoying 41 official selections and 12 awards. PSA 2025 SOROKIN LECTURE FEAUTRING CECILIA MENJÍVAR - SPONSORED BY THE ASA SOROKIN LECTURE GRANT Organizer: Dwaine Plaza, Oregon State University Our PSA 2025 Sororkin Lecturer, Cecilia Menjívar, holds the Dorothy L. Meier Chair in Social Equities and is Professor of Sociology at UCLA. Menjívar specializes in immigration, gender, family dynamics, social networks, religious institutions, and broad conceptualizations of violence. She focuses on two main areas: the impacts of the immigration regime and laws on immigrants and the effects of living in contexts of multisided violence on individuals, especially women. Her work on immigration concerns 38

mainly the United States, where she focuses on Central American immigrants, whereas her work on violence is centered on Latin America, mostly Central America. Menjívar is interested in how state power manifests itself through legal regimes and formal institutions and bureaucracies to shape microprocesses in everyday life. Her work has appeared in the American Journal of Sociology, Social Problems, International Migration Review, Ethnic & Racial Studies, among other journals. Her most recent publications include the edited volume, Constructing Immigrant Illegality: Critiques, Experiences, and Responses (Cambridge 2014), the book, Immigrant Families (Polity 2016), and the edited volume The Oxford Handbook of Immigration Crises (Oxford 2019). Dr. Cecilia Menjívar co-authored an amicus brief in the consolidated DACA cases before the U.S. Supreme Court along with a dozen other prominent empirical scholars who study DACA and its effects. One of her many prominent publications includes “Fragmented Ties: Salvadoran Immigrant Networks in America” (California, 2000), which was the winner of the William J. Goode Outstanding book award from the Family Section of the American Sociological Association, Honorable Mention from the International Migration Section, and a Choice Outstanding Title. Other publications include “Enduring Violence: Ladina Women’s Lives in Guatemala” (California, 2011). She is co-editor of Constructing Immigrant “Illegality”: Critiques, Experiences, and Responses (Cambridge, 2014), Latinos/as in the United States: Changing the Face of América (Springer 2008), and When States Kill: Latin America, the US, and Technologies of Terror (Texas, 2005).

RECENTERING SOCIOLOGY FOR BIPOC STUDENTS: HOLDING SPACE FOR ENGAGED SCHOLAR ACTIVISTS Organizer: Valerie Francisco-Menchavez, San Francisco State University In this workshop, faculty presenters from SF State share their experiences of teaching Sociology serving a student population from historically excluded communities who are commuters, full-time workers, caregivers, first-generation college students from BIPOC and working-class communities. We will share strategies for using the classroom as a space to share navigational capital and knowledge to expose systemic inequities. In our classes, some of our aims are for our students to utilize our systemic analysis inequality and exchange of navigational capital to develop critical thinking through sociology. To do this, we center the ways we use BIPOC knowledge to teach sociology and foster engaged scholar activists. We will focus on creating strategies to democratize classroom spaces 52

and processes for students in ways that redefine sociological rigor as a relevant education.   

Trailer Park America follows how care networks in Syringa Mobile Home Park enabled residents to experience community protection and support as they faced episodic water contamination, social stigma, and forced relocation in a gentrified region of Idaho, 2014-2018. Though Syringa’s rural location near Moscow, Idaho, may appear unique, Leontina Hormel illustrates how residents’ experiences are emblematic of U.S. policies of working-class community investment and austerity over the past halfcentury. Following the author’s response to panelists, time will be available for Q&A from the audience.

Moreover, each type of academic institutions (such as R-1 universities, teaching-focused universities, and community 62

colleges) has different expectations and processes in the job application, interviews, and types of candidates they are searching for. Often, those expectations are not very clear.

In this session, the panelists from different types of institutions will explain those expectations and share their experiences of being a candidate and/or being on the search committee. Later half of the session will focus on answering questions from the audience and providing additional input for students seeking jobs in academia.

While much has been written about both the Black middle class and the rise of singlehood, this book represents a first foray into bridging these two concepts. PSA DOCUMENTARY SERIES: THE MAN CARD Organizer: Dwaine Plaza, Oregon State University Presider: Jarvez Hall, Pacific Sociological Association This new, fully revised update of our 2020 film The Man Card arrives just in time to make sense of the explosive gender politics shaping the 2024 presidential contest between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. The Man Card: 50 Years of Gender, Power & the American Presidency takes account of Harris’s unexpected entry into the race and explores the deeply gendered cultural and political forces she’s up against. Ranging across five decades of presidential campaigns, the film shows how public perceptions of presidential leadership, and of the office of the presidency itself, have come to be linked in the American imagination with traditional ideas about manhood. It also shows how the Right has weaponized regressive ideas about manhood for decades to cast their opponents as “soft” and appeal to working-class white male voters at the level of identity rather than policy. The Man Card is required viewing for anyone who wants to understand why it’s been so hard for a woman to be elected president, and why outmoded ideas about masculinity and power have become central features of American presidential politics. The Man Card was created, co-produced, and co-written by acclaimed author, educator, and political analyst Jackson Katz, and was directed and produced by award-winning filmmakers Peter Hutchison and Lucas Sabean.
