FROM THE

EDITOR

“Good, Better, Best! Never let it rest…’Till your good is better and your better is best!” (St. Jerome). I thought of this quote as a great way to look at the school year, your fair or project accomplishments, or the club/chapter you are a part of. I am always writing about the importance of learning from your experiences and this quote can relate to anything you do.

P.O. Box 41430 • San Jose, CA 95160 (408) 888-2503 • Fax (408) 776-9811

With each new school year, or each new project you purchase, remember to take what you did or learned previously, keep working hard, and learning more, until you reach a new level of achievement! Maybe you are thinking, “I got straight As in school,” or “I won my county fair.” Well then, congratulations are certainly in order! But my question to you is “how are you going to do that again, or how are you going to better yourself?”

Publisher & Managing Editor: Heidi Beljean — (408) 888-2503 Email: pacshow@earthlink.net Production Manager & Art Director: William Crump — (662) 305-5434 Email: pacificshowcase@gmail.com

On the other side of the coin, if you didn’t get the grades you wanted, or didn’t win the prize you had hoped for, how are you going to get to the next level? Getting to where you want to be is a big question. I talk often of setting goals. A goal is the endpoint of what you want. To get started on achieving a goal, you need a game plan, a program of steps that build one on top of the other that will give you the skills or knowledge and the capability to realize your goal.

Instagram and Facebook Management: Riley Quinn – rileyquinn20@gmail.com Representatives: Jace Tarbelle

The big thing in school, or showing, or being active in your club/chapter, is to keep your mind open to learning. You are never too old or too good to learn something new. I have seen many people who rested on their achievement and thought they were from then on entitled to win or be considered the best. But guess what happened? There was somebody else waiting in the wings who was working their tail off at home, who was doing their homework, who was talking to experts in their field, and who was applying what they learned to what they were doing – and when show day came along, they entered the ring with confidence and power, and came out of that ring on top. And Joe Know It All was left standing.

There are so many teachers in your life: at school, your parents, feed company representatives, the breeders of your project animals, to name just a few. You can go online and look at so many websites, and see what different breeders are offering to help you make a project selection. But you can get so much more out of actually talking to a breeder. They can give you details on your animals and answer your questions and pass along their viewpoints and knowledge to you. Verbal communication builds a relationship that goes far beyond the cell phone or computer screen. Breeders I talk to love to share their knowledge with young showmen who want to learn. It is exciting to help build ideas and skills in a young person and then see them apply it and get an end result they are proud of.

The 2017 membership application is included for you to send in with your payment so you are ready to start earning points at your first show of the new year. As we head into fall, we are already beginning to plan for the annual CJLA Year-end Award Banquet. Our big sponsorship drive is beginning and we are mailing out sponsor packets now. The CJLA relies on the generosity of so many great people and businesses who believe in our youth in agriculture. Without their support, we could not reward so many of our members for their achievements in and out of the showring. If you are interested in helping out, give me a call!

In the next issue is our FAIR TIME HIGHLIGHTS section. This is where we can include show results photos from your fair. If you won and your fair wasn’t included in one of our issues’ Show Result sections, send us a picture of you and your animal along with the fair name and what you won. We couldn’t be more excited to kick off this special year with a slightly new format as we constantly strive to better fit the needs of our customers and friends. This year we are selling the majority of our steers on a first come, first serve basis. A small elite group of steers and market heifers will be offered in an online sale hosted by Show Circuit Online Sales on October 30th. We invite you to come view cattle we have designated for that sale in person prior to and on that weekend with a social to be held on sale day with the option to bid on location.

ABOUT THE

COVER

2017 will bring a 20-year milestone of what started as an FFA project and childhood dream when I bought the 10 cows that started me in this business. In the Spring of 1997, I calved my first calf crop and sold a few fellow local 4-hers my first steers. Little did I know, at that point, how my life would forever change and the cows I called a hobby would evolve, not only my life, but also create a direction for my family and the circle of friends and customers we now refer to as our stock show family.

In addition, we will continue our tradition of the annual RL Collection Female Sale on November 26th with a new location at the Silveira Brothers Sale. Once again, this sale will feature our top, open breeding heifer prospects, elite bred heifers, bulls and a few frozen genetic opportunities.

They say, “Don’t blink,” and that statement rings true as I think back to what feels like not very long ago when this all started. I’ve always had a passion for great livestock, which originally was the driving force behind what we now call Rodgers Livestock, and that will surely never change. However, while we have been fortunate to be part of a lot of good stock, the one thing I never envisioned in the beginning was the opportunities to meet so many great friends and mentors across the country in the process. While our focus will always continue to be to make our livestock better the last 20 years has taught me to savor every moment you have with the great friends in this industry. This lesson has not come easy with the loss of a few great ones over the last few years who helped me and my family become who we are today, and I will forever be thankful for their influence!

We are grateful for the loyalty of our customers and friends and can’t wait for the opportunity to build new relationships as we progress!

As we kick off our 20th year, we can’t wait for what the future holds and can’t help but to hope this year continues to allow us to use good livestock as a means to build what this business has taught us has the most value; great memories with even greater people.

— Blaine Rodgers

(back of fold out)

Samantha, 18 years old, is from Livermore, California. Her story began with the help and support of her parents and her older siblings. Fast forward nine years and that’s when it all started for Samantha showing her first market steer, “Teddy.” She spent all her spare time in the show barn aspiring to be the best showman she could be, and that’s exactly what she did. The past ten years Samantha has received numerous handshakes and champion titles. A bittersweet moment for Samantha came when she stepped into the show ring for the final time at the Alameda County Fair. She had the honor of receiving Supreme and Reserve Supreme champion market steers this year. Samantha owes a huge part of her success to her breeder and friend Dave Brown, who bred her Supreme Champion Steer, “Newton.” This year Dave took Samantha and her parents on a trip back east to pick out her Reserve Supreme Steer, “Crimson,” purchased from Habeger Show Stock. She would also like to thank everyone who has helped her with all these accomplishments.

CJLA Announces Additions & Updates To Program For 2017 age groups as is done in established mkt divisions. Wether Dam Does will be eligible to be shown in CJLA Goat Showmanship classes and earn points for CJLA Goat Showmanship. Shows will have the option of holding a separate showmanship for wether dam does and a showmanship for market goats but only the top placing from either showmanship will count for that shows points. If one CJLA Goat Showmanship is offered, then both wether dam does and market goats will show together. (This will be the same as it is for the CJLA Beef Showmanship Division for steers and heifers.)

The CJLA has been approached by members, breeders, and supporters of our organization about several ideas and/or issues pertaining to the current CJLA program. As the jackpot show scene as evolved, the CJLA is dedicated to showcasing our youth involved in raising and showing livestock, as well as keeping the program on the forefront of this industry by offering a format that is current and reflects the interests of our members. The CJLA Adult Advisory Committee met in late spring to discuss several topics which included those we were approached about. Following those meetings, a letter and questionnaire was sent to all sanctioned shows for their feedback and input. Since any changes made to CJLA affect our sanctioned shows, we needed to be sure they were on board and willing to make those changes to their show format.

Any Show offering a wether dam sheep show or a breeding gilt show, those entries are not eligible to be shown in a sanctioned CJLA showmanship because they are not eligible for a CJLA Division. See 2016 CJLA Rule 10a.

Listed below are the changes that will go into effect beginning January 1, 2017.

********************************************* CJLA RULES AND REGULATIONS UPDATE FOR 2017

HEIFER DIVISION:

1. NO ENTRIES CAN CROSS-ENTER DIVISIONS AT ANY CJLA SANCTIONED SHOW. Market Heifers cannot enter Registered Breeding Heifer Classes or vice versa; Wether Dam Sheep cannot enter Market Sheep Classes or vice versa; Breeding Gilts cannot enter Market Hog Classes or vice versa: and Wether Dam Does cannot enter Market Goat Classes or vice versa.

Current Heifer Divisions are: Angus, Hereford, Shorthorn, Limousin, Maine Anjou, Charolais and All Other Breeds (7 Divisions) BEGINNING 2017 THE HEIFER DIVISIONS WILL BE: ANGUS, HEREFORD, SHORTHORN, MAINE ANJOU, CHAROLAIS, ALL OTHER PUREBRED, AND PERCENTAGE. All heifers – including Percentage – MUST BE REGISTERED. The Limousin Division was dropped due to lack of participation. The AOB’s were revised to better reflect the cattle being shown today by dividing it as registered Purebreds and registered Percentage heifers.

2. If any CJLA Sanctioned SWINE Show chooses to separate barrows and gilts for judging, they MUST HAVE a market barrow show AND a market gilt show. Because the CJLA swine division includes both market barrows and market gilts for earning points, a sanctioned show cannot eliminate one or the other from the opportunity to earn points.

BEGINNNING 2017 ALL CJLA SANCTIONED HEIFER SHOWS WILL BE REQUIRED TO OFFER A DIVISION FOR EVERY CJLA HEIFER DIVISION - REGARDLESS OF NUMBER OF ENTRIES. There will be no combining of breeds for judging purposes or to expedite the show. The CJLA recognizes that its members have chosen specific breeds to raise and show and want to be able to compete and earn points against same breed entries. In addition, CJLA members will not be required to also join the California Jr. Heifer Assn. for the breed they are showing in order to earn points in that division, BUT they are encouraged to do so in order to support the Association of their breed and also attend and compete at those breed Fielddays. Points earned at Heifer Fielddays will continue to count in those CJLA Heifer Division standings. (Calif. Jr. Cattle Assn’s do require that you pay their dues in order to show at their fieldday events.)

3. CJLA Divisions Offered: Steer Division, Heifer Division, Lamb Division, Hog Division, Mkt Goat Division, Wether Dam Doe Division. 2017 Membership Fees 1 Division: $50.00 • 2 Divisions: $80.00 3 Divisions: $110.00 • 4 Divisions: $140.00 5 Divisions: $170.00 • 6 Divisions: $200.00 ********************************************* The Adult Advisory Committee also addressed inquiries about adding a Market Heifer Division. It was agreed to leave this option open in the future as show interest, support, and number of entries make it more feasible. It was also recommended that exhibitors and breeders do their part to talk to shows to get them interested in adding any new divisions - i.e. Market Heifers, Breeding Gilts, and Wether Dam Sheep.

********************************************* SWINE, LAMB AND GOAT DIVISIONS: CJLA was asked to add a breeding gilt division, a wether dam ewe division, and a wether dam doe division. In order to add any new Division, there must be a minimum of 8 shows willing to sanction that division (and pay the additional sanctioning fee). The reason for the 8 show minimum is because this is the number of shows that are counted for points for CJLA year-end awards. The only proposed Division that at least met the 8 show requirement was the Wether Dam Doe Division. Therefore a Wether Dam Doe Division will be added into the CJLA Format beginning in 2017. Year-end Awards will be based on points earned at top 8 placing shows. Awards will be given to top 10 point earners overall – awards will not be broken out further into

********************************************* New 2017 membership forms will be posted on the CJLA website – www.cjlainfo.com and the PayPal option is also being updated. New 2017 CJLA Rules and Regulations will be posted on the CJLA website and will include complete information on all updates, changes, and additions. If you have questions, we encourage you to call or send us an email. Sincerely, Heidi Beljean and Mary Ann Bush

Angus Juniors Rise Up in Phoenix

NJAA members travel to Arizona to experience Southwest agriculture. National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) members recently traveled to Phoenix, Ariz., for the Leaders Engaged in Angus Development (LEAD) conference. Angus juniors from 29 states, as well as two from Canada, attended this year’s event Aug. 4-7 to participate in the annual leadership experience sponsored by the Angus Foundation. “LEAD is an opportunity for our junior members to step away from the showring and socialize with their peers from around the U.S.,” said National Junior Angus Board (NJAB) Chair Macy Perry, Prather, Calif. “It gives juniors a chance to build relationships that will last a lifetime.” The LEAD conference is hosted for youth ages 14-21 years old, and this year’s theme was “Rise Up in Phoenix.” While traveling in the Southwest, participants spent two days focused on agriculture, visiting Agritopia, an urban agriculture center, Queen Creek Olive Mill, Arid Zone Trees, Pinal Feeding Co. and Danzeisen Dairy. Agritopia near Gilbert, Ariz., is an urban farm where locals have the opportunity to grow their own crops. It also markets its produce locally and operates a restaurant, where ingredients come fresh from the farm. Manager Katie Critchley says they hope to implement an education program within schools and the community to share where food comes from, as well. A few miles down the road in Maricopa, Ariz., sits Pinal Feeding Co., which feeds nearly 150,000 head of Holstein cattle. “It was really eye-opening to see a feedlot of that size,” said Brody Fitzgerald, LEAD participant from West Grove, Pa. “Back home in Pennsylvania, we don’t have anything like that. It’s great to experience and see different aspects of the industry.” An hour drive across the valley, juniors had the opportunity to tour a 2,200 head dairy. Danzeisen Dairy is family owned, where they also bottle and market their milk products. With staples such as non-fat, whole and

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2016

"LEAD Conference" continued from page 64 Juniors enjoyed a presentation by Patrick Perez, a motivational speaker who encouraged juniors to always strive to reach their goals and not give up when life gets hard. Through personal stories and his love for dancing, he inspired the juniors to know they can and will succeed if they try hard enough.

two-percent milk, Danzeisen also offers chocolate, coffee, root beer, strawberry and orange flavors that have organizations like the Saint Louis Cardinals clamoring for more. “It’s good for the juniors to have the opportunity to see dairies and feedlots on a large scale,” Perry said. “A lot of these juniors come from the Midwest or East Coast where they don’t see these on a daily basis or at all.”

“We want [juniors] to love this experience,” Perry said. “We put on these conferences for them. We want them to come here and meet new people and then go home and be like, ‘Hey, Mom and Dad, I just had the best week ever.’”

The LEAD conference is coordinated by the NJAB, who led team-building activities, leadership workshops and encouraged participants to step outside their comfort zones and meet new friends. Attendees also attended seminars on careers in agriculture, presented by industry professionals in meat science, genetics and marketing.
