editor Fall is here! You can see it in the changing colors of trees and foliage, and you can feel it in the air as days get shorter and the temperature gets cooler. It is also “New Project” season! You know what I mean – county fairs are over and those animals you raised all year have been shown and sold. Now you are ready to start over! Just like I wrote in a previous editorial – for all of us “Livestock” people, September should be the start of our New Year. Everything starts new in September – you are back to school with new schedules, sports start up, maybe you graduated and are starting a new job, and new projects begin. So many things start new in the Fall – I just love this time of year! Everyone seems like they have new energy and are excited about gearing up for the next adventure – not like at the end of Spring and heading into Summer. That spring rush of goinggoing-going to shows, 4-H and FFA events, sports events, school activities, etc – whew! It catches up to you at some point. But we all recuperate, have some good times over the summer, wind up another season… and are ready to go again, and start the cycle all over again.

Unfortunately for me, my Fall season is not what I planned. I hurt my foot, which is requiring me to spend a lot of time off of it. So I haven’t been able to hit the road like I usually do to attend some shows and sales going on. The good part is, I am getting lots of paperwork done; the bad news is I missed Cow Palace. I miss the smell and feeling of the fall Cow Palace show. Of course, people that attended, let me know what went on and how things were going – but it just wasn’t the same as being there!

My thoughts and prayers are following all of you as you travel and attend events. Have fun!

Just a reminder, as you are out looking for your new project, remember to find out as much as you can about the animal you want to purchase – from how the animal is bred (sire and dam), the feed they are on, the vaccinations they have been given, to the temperament of that individual (can you handle it) and any other questions you have. When you start your project armed with information, you are more prepared at home. The transition will be smooth and worry-free. This should be an exciting time for you – new prospects, new goals, and big dreams for blue ribbons and banners in the near future! Good luck, work hard, and have fun!

Mary Ann and I are busily wrapping up 2011, and working on the upcoming Award Banquet scheduled for February 18, 2012. It is only a few short months away and that time will fly by! The big thing we are working on is getting donations and sponsors. We need everyone’s help to bring it all together, so we can honor our junior members for all their achievements. We have been selling raffle tickets on 2 awesome items that just wrapped up, and are preparing for our next raffle. All money brought in from these raffles goes back into awards.

We also need financial donations and items to put into the auction held during the banquet. I know everyone is being more selective when they decide what they will support or donate to, but I hope you will include the CJLA into your plans. This organization is so important to all our members, from the youngest to the oldest, and from the person who attends one sanctioned show to the person who travels to 14 or 15 shows during the year. They are proud to participate, and excited to be recognized at the award banquet. Lets all work together to show them we care!

The California State Fair wrapped up its 158th year on Sunday, July 31, in traditional State Fair style – with the nightly fireworks finale, corn dogs, and plenty of BIG FUN! Throughout its 18-day run, fairgoers were encouraged to enjoy “The Fun Just Got Bigger” and take part in the affordable family entertainment.

• The Poppy Pak was a family favorite with four general admission tickets, four ride vouchers, and a parking pass for a savings of 43% over regular pricing.

This was the second year the State Fair moved away from its traditional August schedule to an earlier start date in July. As a result, families didn’t have to worry about children being back in school, and instead could enjoy all the fair had to offer.

• Every Tuesday was Kids Day when the State Fair offered FREE admission for children 12 and under, and Butler Amusements offered $1 rides for the entire family.

On Tuesday, July 26, 80,765 people visited the State Fair on Kids Day; a record number of guests for a weekday. Attendance figures for 2011 include paid attendance finishing up approximately 2% over 2010, at 521,083. Total attendance tallied at 736,355, a slight decrease of 1%, however, parking revenues were up 9.2%. Carnival Midway commissions are estimated to be up 3.3% along with food and beverage commssions to the fair up 22%. The 2011 average daily attendance was 40,909, up 5% from 2010 (18 days vs. 19 days). All numbers reported are preliminary and unaudited.

• Armed Forces/First Responders Day when the State Fair offered FREE admission to all military, law enforcement, and first responder personnel in or out of uniform with appropriate ID. • Every Friday was Senior Friday when the State Fair offered fairgoers 62 and older admission for $8 up until 8 p.m. along with FREE rides on the Grand Carousel and the Giant Gondola Wheel.

Norb Bartosik, CEO and General Manager of the California Exposition & State Fair said, “The numbers show that Californians came out in droves to support the fair and for that we say thanks! We are particulary pleased that consumers spent more on food, at the carnival, and at commercial vendors. On track horse racing handle increased 11% from last year.”

•The Read to Ride program encouraged children grades K-8 to read two books in exchange for two FREE ride vouchers.

• 100 Golden Deals! The Ultimate Coupon Book, enabled fairgoers to save as much as $3,000 on food and shopping.This was a first time offer and resulted in more than 11,000 books sold.

More than 100 food vendors participating in this year’s fair delighted fairgoers with everything from maggot melts and aligator-on-a-stick, to more conventional menu items like fresh fruits and vegetables. And from all indications, this year's visitors came to the fair with hefty appetites. Vendors reported this year's sales included:

“Thanks to the Cal Expo Police Department, there were no major safety incidences," said Bartosik. "This annual event creates special moments and we do everything in our power to make families and friends feel safe and secure. The State Fair remains the best deal in all of Northern California for family fun!"

About the Authors: Dr. Delmore has received national recognition including Meat Processing Magazines Rising Star Distinction in March 2000, the American Meat Science Association Achievement Award in June 2007, and in 2009 was recognized by Meatingplace Magazine as one of nine up-and-coming industry leaders to watch over the next 20 years.

Dr. Delmore was formerly the Vice President of Technical Services at Clougherty Packing Company (Farmer John).

Bob was responsible for all aspects of Food Safety, Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) systems, USDA-FSIS Regulatory Compliance, Quality Management, Chemistry and Microbiology Laboratories, Product Specifications, Research and Development, Customer Specification and Audit requirements and Animal Welfare and Handling.

Dr. Delmore received a Bachelor of Science degree from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (1991) in Food Science, earned a Masters Degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (1993) and received a Ph.D. from Colorado State University (1998).

Bob and his wife Dr. Lynn Graves Delmore, also a well-regarded meat scientist, live in Atascadero, CA with their two daughters Ainsley and Tessa.

Notice Of Change To Cjla Steer Division Effective Beginning 2012 Show Year The CJLA Steer Division is divided into 3 categories for the purpose of awarding points. These divisions are: English; Black/BlackX; and All Other Color. The purpose of offering these three steer divisions has been for the awarding of points and to allow entries to be sorted into similar groups for fair evaluation and judging.

These registration papers must be official purebred steer registration papers from the respective national breed association. If you are showing an English Steer (Angus, Hereford or Shorthorn) in 2012, you must have your animal registered in YOUR NAME prior to the first show you exhibit that animal at. In addition, these papers must be presented to show management prior to exhibition for verification at all CJLA shows. If registration papers are not verified by show management prior to

If you have any questions at all, please give me a call or send an email and I will be happy to go over your points with you. Do not wait until the end of the year as it is much easier for me to check my records and show results immediately rather than in December!! If you have attended more than 8 shows, your top eight shows are included in the total listed here.

We are already busy planning for the annual award banquet scheduled for February 2012. All members will be receiving information and ballots from us by mail in the next few weeks. It is extremely important that you read through all material sent to you and fill out and return any forms that ask for your input. I will also email the same information to each of you through the cjlainfo@yahoo. com email address I use. So be sure to regularly check your emails, inboxes, and mailboxes for CJLA announcements, information and news updates. You can respond and send back your paperwork by email, fax, or email. SoÖyou will be bombarded from all directions with information, ballots, and forms. This means there is no excuse to say you didn’t get it, forgot about it, or whatever - in way or another, you can read it and return it ASAP!!! Let’s set a new record and see how many of you respond! The CJLA is your organization and your votes and participation is extremely important to our success!

One more item I would like to remind you about - our award program relies entirely on the generous donations of the many people and businesses that support the CJLA and its members, and your help is needed in order for us to meet our goals. I would like to ask you to please spread the word about the CJLA and your participation in the association, and to ask for donations from those who you think would be interested in supporting the award program. Sponsor packets have been mailed out to everyone on our lists. I have also emailed and mailed the packet to all current CJLA members.

PORK: Industry That Is Changing

About the Author: Mike Curry has been employed at Yosemite Meat Company, Inc for 10 years. Yosemite Meat is a pork processing plant in Modesto California, where they process 1500 head per day.

Yosemite Meat is locally owned and operated, and offers a full line of fresh pork products. Yosemite Meat also owns and operates its own swine farm in Idaho.

Mike has been actively involved in a wide spectrum of industry issues throughout his time with Yosemite Meat.

Yosemite Meat is a member of the National Meat Association where Mike serves as a member of their board of directors. In addition, Mike is a member of the board of directors for the California Pork Producers Association. Mike his wife Sarah and their two children, Grace and Lance reside in Hughson California.

Fifth Generation arrives at Sunny Day Shorthorns ranch in Merced, CA. New parents, Tim and Amy Whitfield welcomed their son into the world on July, 21st, 2011 at 8:02 P.M. Timothy (T.J.) Wyman Whitfield weighed 7 lbs.

14 oz and was 20.5 inches long at birth. Grandparents Alpha and Sherri Gipe, Aunt Amanda Gipe and soon to be Uncle Russell McKeith can not wait to see this little one in the show ring!

Spragues Contribute $100,000 to Hereford Youth

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — George and Karen Sprague of Bar One Ranch, Eugene, Ore., gifted $100,000 to the Hereford Youth Foundation of America (HYFA) during “The Harvest” fundraiser for youth Aug. 20 at Kunde Family Estate.

The event hosted by the Jim and Marcia Mickelson family raised a total of $292,000 to support Hereford youth.

What is Non Protein Nitrogen doing in your feed?

Have you ever wondered what Non Protein Nitrogen is? If you have read your feed tag and seen this description of your feed, you should question what you are feeding. In short, Non Protein Nitrogen (NPN) is added sources of Nitrogen in your feed. Sources include Ammonium Chloride, which is often added because chloride helps to prevent urinary calculi. However, the problem with sources of NPN is they inflate the amount of crude protein in your feed, and the majority of the NPN has no benefit to your animals growth and development. The reason that NPN is of little help is that growing animals need high quality protein or True Protein.

Quality protein is defined by the amount and types of Amino Acids found with in the feed. NPN has no amino acids, and there for is the lowest quality source of protein.

“This generous gift by the Spragues brings us one step closer to reaching the $5 million dollar goal set by the HYFA,” says Amy Cowan, American Hereford Association director of youth activities and foundation. “George and Karen have been involved in academia for many years, the past 30 years at University of Oregon. Together they have a passion for Herefords and youth.”

Because of this generous donation, an annual Bar One Ranch Scholarship will be presented by HYFA and given in memory of Ken Tracy of Split Butte, who lost his battle with cancer prior to “The Harvest.”

So, here is how to understand the effect of NPN on your feeds crude protein. Most feed tags report NPN levels between 1%-2% of crude protein. The easy way to interpret this tag is by taking the crude protein and discounting the NPN. For Example: An 18% crude protein feed, with NPN of 1.5%, has a true protein of 16.5%. True protein is the protein with Amino Acids and this is the level of protein that will actually help your animal grow.

If you want to avoid NPN, then look for products that contain sources of Chloride like Calcium Chloride, which is not toxic and has no sources of NPN.

“Ken was a huge supporter of Hereford youth,” Cowan says. “Combined with George and Karen’s passion for education and leadership, this scholarship will leave a lasting legacy honoring two great Hereford families.”

North American Limousin Foundation Hires Bennett as Director of Communications

The North American Limousin Foundation (NALF), is pleased to announce Brooke Bennett has been hired as the director of communications.

Bennett, who a bachelor's degree in animal science and agricultural communications from Kansas State University and a master's degree in public relations and marketing from the University of Denver. She was raised on a cattle ranch in the central valley of California where her family runs a commercial cow/calf operation. Bennett remains active on her family's ranch alongside her parents and siblings.

As the director of communications, Bennett will serve as the organization's communication, marketing and advertising specialist. She will also oversee the development and distribution of all communications to the NALF membership and commercial breeders.

"We are fortunate to have Brooke join our staff," said Mark Anderson, executive director for NALF. "She brings with her a breadth of beef industry experience and knowledge. With her cattle background, she will make a positive, immediate impact on our association. I am confident that she will assist us in successfully executing our communication

NSR Field Staff Internship A terrific opportunity to learn about purebred swine breeding operations and pedigreed show facilitation while you develop contacts within the swine industry!

This is a tailor-made internship - you help make it what you want it to be! As the NSR Marketing & Communications Intern, you will have the opportunity to work with NSR staff to personally design your internship curriculum and focus on the areas of marketing and communications in which you are most interested, or want to gain experience. Options* for a summer work plan include feature writing for Seedstock EDGE, advertisement design and page layout, magazine production, online content development, photography, video editing, promotional campaign design, and more! You will have the chance to collaborate on projects with the National Junior Swine Association, report on national shows, and brainstorm and develop new ideas for growing and promoting the NSR. *Several projects such as show reports and feature stories are required for all interns.

2011 Western All Breeds Rules Entry Deadline: November 21, 2011 SALE - GENERAL RULES

1. CPPA will not bill individuals for purchased swine. All animals must be paid for prior to load-out.

2. Checks for payment from individuals or firms that have had check(s) returned to CPPA due to non-sufficient funds in the past will not be accepted. Cash, check, money order or cashiers check will be the only form of payment accepted.

3. Sale order will be determined by the judge and Swine Improvement Committee. All breeding swine entered in the show and selected for the sale must go through the auction. If an entry in the BREEDING SHOW ONLY does not make the sale, the exhibitor may pay an extra $25 fee to consign it to auction.

4. Animals sold in accordance with Swine Code of Fair Practices. CPPA may not be held liable for any exceptions.

5. A commission of 15% to CPPA and the NPB check off will be retained on animals sold.

6. Animals purchased in the sale can be taken from the grounds immediately following the sale, and must be off the grounds by noon on Sunday.

PUREBRED BREEDING SWINE SHOW AND SALE Age Requirements:

Open Gilts - Farrowed on or after April 1, 2011 Boars - Farrowed on or after April 1, 2011 Bred Gilts - Due to farrow 12/2011 - 3/2012 1. Must meet breed eligibility requirements of their respective Breed Registries.

2. All entries must be registered with original papers submitted at check-in. Bred gilts must have breeding certificate attached to registration paper. (No copies of pedigrees will be accepted.) Pigs must be registered in the name of the CPPA member in order to be eligible to show.

3. Bred Gilts must be purebred; may carry a crossbred litter, and must have passed over prior to the show.

CROSSBRED BREEDING SWINE SHOW AND SALE Age Requirements:

Open Gilts - Farrowed on or after April 1, 2011 Boars - Farrowed on or after April 1, 2011 Bred Gilts - Due to farrow 12/2011 - 3/2012 1. Classes will be broken by weight.

3. Bred Gilts must have passed over prior to the show.

CLUB PIG SHOW AND SALE

1. The weight range of the pigs entered in the sale shall be 50-125 lbs.

2. Papers are required for purebred club pigs. Hogs without papers will be shown in the crossbred division 3. The Club Pig Sale will be limited to 40 club pigs, and will be determined by the judge.

MARKET BARROW SHOW

1. The weight range is: 210— 280 pounds.

2. There will be two divisions: Purebred and Crossbred. Purebred barrows must have papers.

3. No Carcass contest will be conducted, however shipping to Yosemite Meats Company will be available to exhibitors who wish to have their mkt barrows sold at market price.

4. There is no limit on the number of entries by any producer.
