FROM THE

EDITOR

So who agrees with me that this year has flown by? As I write this, we are at the last couple of months of 2019! The holidays are upon us and I am excited because I really enjoy the Fall and Winter seasons. The shorter days and cooler nights, changing colors on the trees along our country road and in the hills around us, baking and getting ready for Christmas. This is my favorite time of year. Thanksgiving and Christmas are for me a time to give thanks for my many blessings, to reflect on the past year, and to spend time with my family. It is a time to slow down a little bit and to get ready for the New Year. As much as I love the holiday season, I have to say that I am really looking forward to January 1st, 2020! More than ever, I am looking forward to Spring’s arrival and the promise it holds for the next amazing 12 months!

P.O. I am sure many of you feel the same way in regard to your livestock projects. As you have completed the show projects you began many months ago, you are now searching for the next new recruits for the show barn. The thrill of the hunt is so exciting! County fairs are over and it is time to get out and select those new prospects! I love seeing kids selecting and bringing home their new projects!

Representatives: Kaela Cooper Tiffany Carter

A couple of thoughts come to mind when I mention new projects because I think it is important to review what you just completed in order to step up to the next level and make those advances you want to achieve. I suggest taking a bit of time and asking yourself – what were the goals you had set for yourself? Did you achieve those goals? What adjustments did you make along the way - and how was your end result affected? Are there things you want to do differently with the next project – and how will you achieve those changes? So much to think about and plan for to be sure you come home with the ones you really want! Check out ads, social media, websites, and get on the phone with breeders who have something you might be interested in. Animal costs and feed costs are high, so this venture is a big investment in both dollars and time. Use resources to your advantage so when you do go to a sale or to a ranch or breeder, you are prepared and your visit is successful.

For address corrections, send current mailing label along with new address to Pacific Showcase.

One thing that makes raising animals more fun is having other opportunities, in addition to your county fairs, to compete and exhibit in different settings and under many different judges. California is so fortunate to have so many jackpots for all species. It takes many dedicated volunteers and show staff to step up and put on an event for youth exhibitors to participate in. From January to December, there is something for everyone. In this issue be sure to check out the Jackpot Breakdown. Keep the section as a great reference list. Each show listing includes dates, location, species, and contact information. We have done our best to verify everything, but be sure to check out each issue of this magazine for any updates or changes. It’s also a good idea to contact the shows and get on their mailing lists, or like them on Facebook or other social media sites so you get the updates and information they post.

In order to achieve our goals for member recognition, we rely on the generosity of all our donors to help us make that happen! I am amazed every year by the outstanding young people who are a part of CJLA, and your support is a truly worthwhile gift! If you would like to donate to the CJLA, contact me and I would love to discuss how we can work together. We are so grateful for the support from so many that has kept us going from year to year. In addition to the award ceremony, we will also have a silent auction set up if you would like to donate something! There are lots of ways to help out and support this great group of kids. I look forward to hearing from you!

It never gets old and I am continually looking for ways to offer you what you want to see. This magazine is for you! Would you like to be included in the Breeders Directory? Are you thinking about advertising, or the best way to reach potential customers? We have lots of options to help you decide what would work best for you! Are there topics you would like to see in our articles? Please feel free to contact me with questions, thoughts, or ideas! I would love to hear from you! And don’t forget, we love to get candid photos for the Hot Shot section in each issue, so be sure to send those in, too!

NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2019

Lameness in Show Cattle and Show Pigs By Steven C. Allday, DVM Lameness in show livestock can be best summarized by an old saying that I have heard numerous times throughout my life. “When you hear hoofbeats look for horses not zebras.”

Pigs can become lame due to faulty conformation which creates uneven hoof wear and ultimately friction abrasions or penetration through the hoof.

What this should remind us is that if your show livestock is lame always thinks about the common sense likelihood of the cause. If your show steer is lame it is probably due to something in his feet. About 70% of lameness in show cattle is due to something in the bovine hoof. This can be from hoof abscesses, laminitis or even foot rot. The predominant surfaces that your show animal will encounter is either concrete or asphalt. Most of the time these surfaces are safe and adequate for livestock however constant, repetitive contact with this surface can cause abrasions and possibly penetration through the horn tissue of the hooves.

Joints can become arthritic due to our show livestock becoming a victim to their genetics. Livestock has been selected for rapid growth and development. When they put on a large amount of muscle on an immature skeletal structure it becomes a perfect storm for arthritis to occur. These are the most common causes of lameness in show cattle/pigs. Obviously trauma, infectious or metabolic situations can also cause lameness but these are relatively rare as compared to problems in feet and joints. So in conclusion, if your show animal comes up acutely lame it is better to listen for “horses and not zebras.” Best Regards, Steven C. Allday DVM

If you haven’t signed up to be a sponsor – Give me a call or contact me if you have questions. WE NEED HELP! WE NEED SPONSORS! We did mail out Sponsor Packets to all previous donors plus many more people – but we found out no one received them! We only found this out just before Christmas and we have been scrambling ever since. If you can help, we have a sponsor form in this issue, or you can go to the CJLA website – www.cjlainfo.com – for a full sponsor packet, or GIVE ME CALL AND WE CAN TALK! Our entire Award Program depends on the generosity of so many people who care about our kids and this organization. We truly cannot do this without you! I apologize for sounding so desperate but this is where we are at right now. Please help us not disappoint our CJLA members! The CJLA was started in 2000, and has been able to accomplish so much for our members because of the generosity of our donors. We cannot say “THANK YOU” often enough for this wonderful support year after year! Be a part of this outstanding group who believes in these bright stars!
