NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2018

FROM THE

EDITOR

It’s the most beautiful time of the year! Happy Thanksgiving! Merry Christmas! And Happy New Year! In the blink of an eye, 2018 is just about in the record books! It seems like I was just writing about the new school year starting, and now the first half is almost complete. Even though it is fun to just sail along and see what happens, it is also a great idea to have a plan and schedule for the important things you want to accomplish.

P.O. Box 41430 • San Jose, CA 95160 (408) 888-2503 • Fax (408) 776-9811 Publisher & Managing Editor: Heidi Beljean — (408) 888-2503 Email: pacshow@earthlink.net

For those who are getting ready to select and purchase new projects for the upcoming year, it is definitely a good idea to do some planning and research ahead of time so you are aren’t rushed or unsure, or worse yet, forced to get an animal you are not happy with.

Production Manager & Art Director: William Crump — (662) 305-5434 Email: pacificshowcase@gmail.com

We all have dreams of success. Big dreams are good! They help you set goals and are an incentive to to work hard, stay focused, and not give up. You can buy great genetics but that is only part of the equation. You then need to go home and feed correctly, groom, and train that animal to perform and show at its best advantage. You are part of the equation too. You need to pay attention to every detail, ask questions if you need help, and work on your training and showmanship skills as well.

Instagram and Facebook Management: Kaela Cooper – kaelacooper@aol.com Representatives: Kaela Cooper Tiffany Carter

I just mentioned “ask questions.” This is so important. The only stupid question is the one you don’t ask! So many people are around that are willing to help and offer advice. A good place to start is to talk to your breeder. They will want to share their knowledge so you learn and so their genetics reach their best potential. Project leaders can offer lots of tips if they have experience in that species. When you are at jackpots, camps, educational seminars – Ask Questions! Watch how other people are doing things! Almost everyone will stop and take time to answer your questions and offer tips and advice. Then take those tips and try them at home.

Pacific Showcase limits its liability resulting from any and all errors, misprints and/or other inaccuracies in the advertisements and editorial content. The opinions or views expressed in all editorials are those only of the writer or persons interviewed and not the Pacific Showcase.

A good tip from me is to keep a journal. When you ask questions, write down the answers. If you read a useful article, make a copy and put it in the journal so you can refer back to it. Keep a list of people you have talked to so you can contact them again if needed. You will quickly find out that this journal will be a great reference in years to come. You can even keep a chart of weights, show placings for each animal etc.

Reproductions or other use of this magazine in whole or part of the contents without written permission of the editor is prohibited. Pacific Showcase welcomes readers contributions. Articles of interest, show results, sale results, and calendar dates are welcome and will be printed on space available. To have articles or pictures returned, include a stamped, selfaddressed envelope. Send all submissions to address above.

I mentioned “equation” earlier, too. Selection of good genetics, hard work and attention to detail, training – yourself and your animal equal success! Doing all of these can make the difference between 1st and 2nd! Never say “I can’t” because you are lowering your personal expectations. Always tell yourself “I Can!” Every successful person started at a beginning and achieved success because they believed they could!

Pacific Showcase is published bimonthly. It is mailed first class and third class bulk mail at Morgan Hill, California. Postmaster: send address changes to Pacific Showcase, P.O. Box 41430, San Jose, CA 95160. Subscriptions: (Bulk mail - one year - $25; two years - $45.) (First class - one year - $35; two years $65.) For processing of new subscriptions - please allow 4 to 6 weeks. For address corrections, send current mailing label along with new address to Pacific Showcase.

As you read this issue of the Pacific Showcase, the year is also wrapping up for the California Junior Livestock Association. We are so fortunate to have a community of supporters who help us each year to reach our goals of honoring our many members who have achieved so much with their livestock projects. If you would like to be a part of this elite group of sponsors, please give me a call! I would love to talk with you about the CJLA and how you can help! And kids, be sure to sign up now for 2019! Shows start the first part of January and points begin once you join.

Time to Plan Ahead! The January/February 2019 Issue is our

Club Lambs, Project Hogs and Show Goats Sale Issue

This issue features our Jackpot Breakdown section. We have listed jackpots throughout the western states along with show details and contact information. CJLA Shows are listed in bold print. Some shows do not have dates confirmed as we go to print so we recommend that you contact each show you are interested in attending for more details. Check out the upcoming events section in future issues for updates on dates and events. And if you have an event you would like added to our list, be sure to contact us so we can get them included. When the next issue comes out, the holidays will be over! I hope you all enjoy time with family and those who are special to you. Share with others who may be less fortunate. Sharing brings joy to the giver as well as the receiver and that is so needed in this world we live in.

Give us a call!

408-888-2503

A few notes for the New Year - be sure to send in Hot Shot photos for the magazine, and let us know if you move so we can update your subscription. Any news you want to share? Give me a call or send an email so we can add to an upcoming issue.

NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2018

We are also looking for some great items for the auction we have every year during the awards. So if you have something, or have an idea – don’t wait! Let us know!

CJLA NEWS &

UPDATES

CJLA MEMBERS – We will be sending out End-of –Year information – please watch your email boxes and your mailboxes for communications from CJLA. These are things you will need to respond to! And don’t forget – we have some contests to go along with the Banquet! More information on those will be emailed to you ASAP!

The points posted in this issue are for all shows through the Northern Exposure Fall Classic! It is crunch time now with the end of the year just around the corner. We will be working hard to get the rest of the shows entered and points updated.

CJLA MEMBERS – We are changing the way members are selected to serve on the Junior Board of Directors. In the past we asked for nominations from the membership. However, there have been members wanting to be on the board that were left out of this process. WE FEEL IT IS MUCH MORE FAIR FOR THOSE INTERESTED IN BEING A DIRECTOR TO BE ABLE TO APPLY. All Members have been emailed a Junior Board Application and it is available on the CJLA Website. Two directors are chosen for Beef, Sheep, Swine, and Goat division positions. We are looking at ways to get the Junior Board more active and involved in CJLA throughout the year. If you would like to help reach those goals, BER SURE TO APPLY!

If you have questions about your point totals, please contact us so we can go over our records! Our point tabulator asks that you provide a record of the shows you went to and your placings so she has a reference point to start researching the show results. As soon as the final shows are processed, we will eblast out to all members the final points. You will have a specified amount of time to contact us with any questions. After that date, all points and placings will stand as posted. We work really hard all year to insure the accuracy of the points. Your inquiries are welcome but it is most helpful that you check each time points are posted and contact us right away. It takes time to go back show by show and look up and compare records. Our point tabulator has a busy full-time job and does the CJLA stuff in her off time so the quicker we are contacted, the more efficiently a reply can be completed!

We have had many inquiries about how we get information out to everyone. We mainly send out E-Blasts with news, information, and point updates. We also post everything on the CJLA website and in each issue of this magazine. Due to the cost of postage, we only mail paperwork for year-end stuff unless there is a special instance where we need to get paper copies to all members. PLEASE be sure to read your E-Blasts – if you are not getting any – let us know so we can double-check your email addresses!

The 2018 CJLA Award Ceremony is just around the corner! February 16, 2019 will be here before you know it! Held each year during the Western Bonanza Junior Livestock Show at the MidState Fairgrounds in Paso Robles, WE ARE CHANGING THINGS UP! Watch your emails and mailboxes for details! As we start planning our Annual Award Ceremony, the CJLA relies completely on our generous sponsors to help us reach our goals of recognizing the achievements of our members. Each year we ask for your help to spread the word about CJLA and what it means to you, and to bring in new supporters. We have a Sponsor Packet available – or give Heidi a call and she will contact the people or businesses you tell her about. Sponsor packets are being sent to all CJLA members also and we ask that you reach out to those you know who would be interested in supporting the CJLA in some way.

CJLA Questions? Emails can be sent to cjlainfo@yahoo.com or through the CJLA website: www.cjlainfo.com Heidi Beljean: 408-888-2503 or pacshow@earthlink.net (CJLA Info, Memberships, & Sponsorships) Mary Ann Bush: 831-905-5665 or cjlainfo@yahoo.com (CJLA Rules, Points, & Shows)

California Exhibitors Bring Home Top Awards from American Royal Livestock Show Wyatt DeBusk hails from Paso Robles, CA and has shown hogs at the American Royal 5 times. Following a day filled with suspense and emotions, his Berkshire entry received the judges’ handshake as he won Reserve Grand Champion Market Hog. Wyatt said winning was on his “bucket list” and was the most memorable thing he has achieved in his show career. Wyatt is currently a 2nd year student at Cal Poly, SLO and is studying Wine and Viticulture.

The American Royal Livestock Show held October 17-28, 2018 in Kansas City, MO hosts top exhibitors from across the country. Two swine exhibitors from California rose to the top and brought home big wins. Hannah Seymore from Visalia, CA won 1st place in Senior Swine Showmanship. Hannah grew up showing hogs but this was the first time she had exhibited at the American Royal. She said she was honored to win this contest and was thrilled that her hard work over the years paid off! Hannah is currently attending Kansas State University majoring in Animal Science with an emphasis in Ag Business.

California Junior Livestock Association P.O. Box 41430 • San Jose, CA 95160 Phone: 408-888-2503 • Fax: 408-776-9811 Email: pacshow@earthlink.net

Dear Friend of the CJLA, It has been 19 years since the idea of an organization to promote our youth in agriculture became a reality. The California Junior Livestock Association became official in 2000 because of a dream and a whole lot of belief in our livestock youth. With over 325 members annually, and 30-plus sanctioned shows, the CJLA has grown into California’s premier junior livestock organization. From beginning level to the most advanced presentation, CJLA strives to offer positive experiences for everyone. It has provided a venue for our young members to showcase their passions and commitment to excellence in the show ring, in school, and in their daily lives. Our members love what they do. They love to raise and show livestock. From selecting a certain animal, setting goals, and working hard, to competing in show rings up and down the state, CJLA kids are up to the challenge. But it’s more than time in the ring, it is time with family, making friends, and building memories that will last a lifetime. The California Junior Livestock Association has become the cornerstone of the junior livestock scene in our state. Our focus is on providing members with opportunities for recognition as they set and attain new goals, expand their animal husbandry skills and industry knowledge, and compete with their cattle, sheep, hogs, and goats in competitive events. Every member is honored at the annual Award Ceremony, and the top exhibitors in each division are awarded prizes for their achievements. In addition to earning awards for exhibiting their animal projects, members can also enter other CJLA contests. The CJLA/Weaver Essay Contest and the Dave Spaulding Memorial Scholarship appeal to our youngest to oldest members. The CJLA continually strives to offer something for all our members and we are excited for the new events planned for this year, and into the future! Our upcoming Award Ceremonies, recognizing the achievements of our 2018 members, will be held February 16, 2019 at the Mid-State Fairgrounds in Paso Robles, CA. Cal Poly’s Western Bonanza Junior Livestock Show is also taking place this weekend at the fairgrounds and many of our members and their families will be attending both events. We are planning our Award Presentations around the show events. Watch for more details coming soon as our schedule is finalized! In order to reach our goal of providing special awards to all our members, the CJLA relies completely on the generosity of those who share our belief in the future of our youth and the future of agriculture. CJLA members are the leaders and bright stars of tomorrow who use the skills they learn today in their future endeavors. Your sponsorship will help the CJLA give awards that can be used in our members’ future projects, education, and careers. Large or small, all contributions go directly back to our members and help to ensure the success of our award program. You can help us keep our vision alive through your support. Please read through the enclosed sponsor information. Several levels of support are offered and you can choose where you want your donation applied. To make a contribution to CJLA, please fill out and return the enclosed form or you may go to the CJLA website – www.cjlainfo.com – and use our PayPal service. If you have any questions at all, please contact me directly at (408) 888-2503. The CJLA truly values your support, but more importantly, our junior members and their families appreciate it! We promise to put your contribution to good use. Thank you for your consideration of our request. Sincerely,

Heidi Beljean NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2018
