FROM THE

EDITOR I am enjoying this Fall and Winter season! The shorter days and cooler nights, changing colors on the trees along our country road and in the hills around us, the anticipation of El Nino (that we need so badly), and preparations for the holiday season. This is my favorite time of year. Thanksgiving and Christmas are for me a time to give thanks for my many blessings, to reflect on the past year, and to spend time with my family. It is a time to slow down (a little bit!) and to get ready for the New Year. As much as I love the holiday season, once it’s over, I am ready for spring to arrive, and the promise it holds for the next amazing 12 months. The cycle continues and rejuvenates us, so we can take on the tasks and challenges that lie ahead.

P.O. Box 41430 • San Jose, CA 95160 (408) 888-2503 • Fax (408) 776-9811 Publisher & Managing Editor: Heidi Beljean — (408) 888-2503 Email: pacshow@earthlink.net Production Manager & Art Director: William Crump — (662) 305-5434 Email: pacificshowcase@gmail.com

I am sure many of you feel the same way. As you have completed the show projects you began many months ago, you are now searching for the next new recruits for the show barn. The thrill of the hunt is so exciting! Researching websites, visiting breeders, checking out sale consignments, and travelling many miles to look over those prospects is such fun. One thing that makes raising animals more fun is having the opportunities in addition to your county fairs, to compete and exhibit in different settings and under many different judges. California is so fortunate to have so many jackpots for all species. It takes many dedicated volunteers and show staff to step up and put on an event for youth exhibitors to participate in. From January to December, there is something for everyone. In this issue be sure to check out the Jackpot Breakdown. Keep the section as a great reference list. Each show listing includes dates, location, species, and contact information. We have done our best to verify everything, but be sure to check out each issue of this magazine for any updates or changes. It’s also a good idea to contact the shows and get on their mailing lists, or like them on Facebook or Instagram or Twitter.

The opinions or views expressed in all editorials are those only of the writer or persons interviewed and not the Pacific Showcase.

In this issue we are starting a section on Livestock Camps and Clinics. As dates and information become available, we will add to our list, and it too will become a source for information to our readers. These educational camps are a great way to learn from experts in their field that you otherwise might not have the opportunity to hear speak.

Reproductions or other use of this magazine in whole or part of the contents without written permission of the editor is prohibited. Pacific Showcase welcomes readers contributions. Articles of interest, show results, sale results, and calendar dates are welcome and will be printed on space available. To have articles or pictures returned, include a stamped, selfaddressed envelope. Send all submissions to address above.

I mentioned above about the people who put on jackpot shows. It takes many dedicated people to put on educational events for our youth. Be sure to say thank you to everyone you meet who plays a part in getting these things accomplished. Most times their only reward is your appreciation.

Pacific Showcase is published bimonthly. It is mailed first class and third class bulk mail at Morgan Hill, California. Postmaster: send address changes to Pacific Showcase, P.O. Box 41430, San Jose, CA 95160.

The California Junior Livestock Association has played a huge role in California in increasing the number of jackpots as well as the number of camps, clinics, and educational opportunities. It has been 16 years since the CJLA was officially organized and the first members joined and shows became sanctioned. We are truly grateful for the support from so many who have kept us going all this time. The Award Banquet is a time to recognize the efforts and accomplishments of all our members and we rely on the generosity of all our donors to help us reach our goals. The 2015 Banquet will be held on February 13, 2016, in Paso Robles during the Western Bonanza Jr. Livestock Show. If you would like to donate to the CJLA, contact me and I would love to discuss how we can work together. The junior members are also selling raffle tickets for a Western Bonanza weekend package that includes hotel stay, money toward entry fees, restaurant certificates, gift cards, gas cards, store cards, and CJLA goodies. You can buy from any CJLA member or contact me for tickets.

Subscriptions: (Bulk mail - one year - $25; two years - $45.) (First class - one year - $35; two years $65.) For processing of new subscriptions - please allow 4 to 6 weeks. For address corrections, send current mailing label along with new address to Pacific Showcase.

Time to Plan Ahead! The January/February Issue is our

Club Lambs, Project Hogs and Show Goats Sale Issue

Before I close, I also want to say how thankful I am to be able to put out this magazine for our subscribers. It has been many years since Pacific Showcase was just an idea that I was able to turn into an actual publication that serves so many. It never gets old, and I am continually looking for ways to offer you what you want to see. If you have any thoughts or comments, I would love to hear from you.

Give us a call!

CJLA NEWS & UPDATES! I know I have commented in every issue this year about how FAST the days and months have gone by! As you read this article, 2015 is in the record books. I hope for each of you that you have had some good times, have achieved some of those goals you set way back at this time last year, and have been blessed with many positive things in your life.

year-end division standings because the person above me had those bonus points and I didn’t! More information on this is on the CJLA website along with the contact names for each association. If you have questions, CONTACT US! Sponsorships – We are mailing and emailing out Sponsor Packets to our many generous sponsors, potential donors, and all CJLA Members! The CJLA relies on donations to help with our Award Program each year. We ask for EVERYONE to help out by recruiting support. This is really important and YOUR HELP IS NEEDED! WE also need items for our silent and live auctions at the Banquet. Keep that in mind and see what unique items you can bring or get donated!!

Of course, the end of the year also signifies CRAZY TIME in CJLA land! Wrapping up this year and planning for the upcoming banquet is busy – but then we throw in getting the 2016 show year underway – AND there is a lot going on! SO READ ON … and I will cover the details and news for everything. LET ME STATE RIGHT HERE THAT IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT ANYTHING, PLEASE CONTACT US!!! We are here to help and don’t want anyone to miss out because they didn’t know - or didn’t find out! We try to get the word out about everything going on by printing in this magazine, posting on the website, and sending out E-Blasts – but when it comes right down to it, YOU have to read it, and then CALL US if you have questions.

Fundraiser!!!! The CJLA is holding a fund-raiser for a Western Bonanza Weekend Package! This is really cool – 2 nights Hotel Room, Cash toward entries, and loads of restaurant certificates, gas cards, shopping gift cards, CJLA goodies, and MORE! All CJLA members have received a packet in the mail with tickets. PLEASE sell those you receive!! There is great potential to earn funds for the CJLA Awards Banquet. And this package is not just for CJLA members. Sell to anyone who is planning to show at Western Bonanza – or to family or friends who will be coming to the Banquet! Who wouldn’t want a chance to win an all-expense paid weekend for the price of just one ticket!

POINTS in this issue include ALL SHOWS THROUGH Spotlight on Quality Shorthorn Show – EXCEPT FOR COW PALACE!! Cow Palace points are NOT in this report. Please realize that there are still shows for each specie until the end of 2015 – so it is very likely that standings and year-end points can change! It all comes down to a members Top Eight Shows for the year that are counted. As always, check your totals and your information in your divisions. Any questions, you need to contact us so we can review your records. We recommend that everyone keep track of their placings at each show. It makes it much easier for us to go back and check show results if we know what shows you went to – it saves a lot of time too!

PLEASE READ ANY EMAIL YOU RECEIVE FROM US!! You will be able to see in the subject line something like “CJLA News or Information Here! This is an important email that requires your attention. I have some people who tell me they don’t read our emails - but this is how we correspond 99% of the time! We have posted for years now that most of our communication will be through email to save mail costs. We do our best to get information out, then its’ your responsibility to read what we send!

The 2016 membership application is in this issue of the magazine. WE ALSO OFFER PAYPAL ON THE CJLA WEBSITE, www. cjlainfo.com. NJAA Announces New Age Rule for Competition Angus youth who are eight years old can now exhibit cattle at Angussponsored shows. Eight-year-old members of the National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) are now eligible to show at Angus-sponsored competitions across the country. The new age rule, approved by the American Angus Association Board of Directors and the National Junior Angus Board (NJAB), takes effect Jan. 1, 2016. “The recent change to age requirements will allow Angus juniors who are eight years old on Jan. 1 to be eligible to compete at our nationwide shows,” says Jaclyn Clark, Association director of events and education.

One Day

The NJAA sponsored more than 50 junior shows during the past year, involving nearly 5,000 Angus youth. According to the new rule, an exhibitor’s birthdate must fall between Jan. 1, 1995, and Dec. 31, 2007, to compete and be either a junior, regular or life member of the American Angus Association.

Steers Only Show

Saturday, February 27th, 2016 — Held At —

Major NJAA-sponsored competitions include the Mid-Atlantic Junior Angus Classic, Western Regional Junior Angus Show, Eastern Regional Junior Angus Show, Atlantic Nationals, Northwest Preview, the AllAmerican Angus Breeders’ Futurity and the National Junior Angus Show.

Calaveras County Fairgrounds (Angels Camp, CA)

News affecting all livestock breeders in California! SB 27 was signed into law this weekend by Governor Brown, a bill CPPA and other industry staff addressed in great detail during the past year.

Antibiotics will still be available over-the-counter, but a prescription from your veterinarian will be required to purchase. Contact your licensed veterinarian and establish a veterinarianclient-patient relationship (if not already done so) to ensure you are prepared for the changes to take effect in 2018.

Beginning January 1, 2018, this bill will require the following: •

Prohibit the administration of medically important antimicrobial drugs, unless ordered by a licensed veterinarian through a prescription or veterinary feed directive pursuant to a veterinarian-client-patient relationship.

Prohibit the administration of a medically important antimicrobial drug to livestock solely for purposes of promoting weight gain or improving feed efficiency.

“We have been using MoorMan’s® ShowTec® Sale Burst to follow up their Burst Starter™ product for the past six months now, and we couldn’t be more pleased with the results. Pigs get off to a great start on the Burst Starter and are extra “bloomy”, then they transition great to the Sale Burst and it maintains their shape without “overdoing” it. We’ve found mixing in a little Showts a couple weeks before a sale will enhance their bloominess even more. We have been adding EatMOOR™ as a supplement to our show feed rations with great results. EatMOOR helped maintain our show pigs’ appetites through the hot summer. When we began recommending it to our customers, we heard nothing but positive feedback and it helped many junior members with lighter weight animals get them back on track for the heavier weight ranges at their respective fairs.” —Russell Pedrett, Ottenwalter Show Pigs, Colusa, CA

Heimer Hampshires selects Robert Smasne of Prosser, Washington as the 2015-2016 AcHHeiver more successful. I want to be a part of this program because I believe in myself, my talents and my vision for my operation and truly understand the value that these females, coupled with Jesse’s knowledge and guidance, would bring to my business.”

Robert O. Smasne, a 4th generation farmer, was born and raised in the agriculturally diverse Yakima Valley in the Eastern portion of Washington State. His passion for raising showpigs started at an early age and can be credited to his dad, who has actively raised showpigs for the past 50 years. Smasne first started raising hogs as part of his 4-H project and then recently got back into the industry once his kids started showing.

In addition to the possibilities this opportunity will provide for his operation, Smasne believes giving back is also extremely important, and he sees his involvement in the program as a way to help other breeders.

His showpig operation, Smasne Show Pigs is a 10+ sow operation that focuses on developing elite females. Smasne produces both purebred and crossbred showpigs and currently sells all of his pigs through private treaty with a customer base he built on strong referrals and relationships.

“I would like to share this wonderful program with my father and those close to me that continue to share a passion for this industry. I understand the worth of this program to myself and also to my geographical area. Not only will my operation benefit from this program, but also many other area breeders will benefit through my success, my breeding and my guidance. To be better, to succeed and to tell a story you must be passionate, motivated, surround yourself with those who can help you achieve. More than anything, you must be willing to give back.”

Smasne is no stranger to the hard work and dedication necessary to run a business as he has successfully chased his dreams in another industry. He is owner and operator of Smasne Cellars, named 2013 Washington Winery of the Year. Smasne crafts all of the wines for his label, and is also a highly sought-after winemaking consultant for many Washington wineries.

About Heimer Hampshires Heimer Hampshires is a show pig operation based in Taylor, Missouri. Multiple breeds and crosses are farrowed year round and marketed primarily online to a nationwide audience. Although proven to be one of the most successful breeders at all levels of competition, Heimer Hampshires¹s true focus is on developing young people and promoting agriculture as a viable and sustainable career path.

Smasne feels the value of the AcHHeive program is far more than just getting to select from the Heimer Hampshire gilt pool. “Although having access to the quality females is reason enough to be a part of this program, I see this as an opportunity to make myself better through the guidance and support of Jesse. I credit the success of my winery and winemaking career to not only hard work and dedication, but also the trust I put in the peers I surrounded myself with. Through their knowledge, I made myself better, my career better, and my future NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2015
