Livestock News and Notes from Around the Country NILE Internship Program Available The NILE is offering the experience of a lifetime Oct. 14-24!

have brains and brawn-handle high pressure critical thinking and not be afraid to pick up a pitch fork, can you handle this?

BILLINGS, MONT -- The Northern International Livestock Exposition (NILE) is searching for college students who are willing and able to work all day and into the night, eat and sleep minimally, handle high pressure situations, work in the extreme weather conditions of October in Montana, and enjoy every minute of it!

We get it, the NILE is during the school months and it's hard to get away, but believe us, it's worth it for the experience! Yes, the NILE is months away, but it's not too soon to start thinking about your future. Many of the NILE's past interns are gainfully employed and attribute some of their success to the NILE internship experience. Apply today (while you have a little extra "unexpected free-time) and set yourself up for success!

From the bright lights of the rodeo arena, to the heart pounding hooves of the horse events and finally to the smells of adhesives in the cattle barn, you won't want to miss out on the action! The internship is ten days of early mornings and late nights. Some interns work the livestock show ring; checking in exhibitors, lining up steers, shuffling sheep, and recording results. Other interns set up horse awards, buck bales, and score keep the ranch rodeo. All interns laugh, goof around, and accomplish tasks. The work details are to be determined, but we guarantee they'll be valuable!

Oh and we cannot forget to mention, the Media internship will move from a 10-day internship to a semester long opportunity! This will allow the student chosen the opportunity to get an in depth knowledge of the inner workings of the Media side of the NILE Stock Show and Rodeo and receive full college credit for their efforts. Want more information on how to apply? Go to www.thenile.org for all the answers! All applications must be in the NILE Office by July 30, 2021 and interns will be announced shortly thereafter.

So, are you one of those college kids who are little obsessed, a little quirky, and has a lot of heart? Do you eat, breathe, and sleep stock shows and rodeos? How are you at functioning on minimal sleep and maximum caffeine or sugar? This is a job for those college kids who

2022 NILE Merit Heifer Application Available our donors over the years," says NILE General Manager Jennifer Boka. "We are truly grateful for them since the program's inception."

Educating youth about the beef industry through the BILLINGS, MONT.--The opportunity for kids started in the cattle industry is knocking, and loudly. Applications for the NILE Merit Heifer program are now available for the 2021-2022 year.

Interested in becoming a donor? The NILE Merit Heifer Program is also seeking those interested in donating a heifer calf for the upcoming year. Applications and a link to the YouTube video must be received no later than June 30, 2021 by 4 p.m.. The 2022 recipients will be announced in late August 2021. Applications available online at www.thenile.org

The NILE Merit Heifer program is a live animal scholarship, meaning the recipients are given a young, live, heifer calf. The objective is to to help youth get a start in the beef cattle business and gain knowledge about the beef industry.

Application Requirements: • complete application • character references • written essay • 3-5 minute YouTube video (should include, but is not limited to): an introduction; facility tour; current 4-H/FFA projects; goals and objectives for the Merit Heifer; voiced by the applicant For more information regarding the NILE Merit Heifer Program, please email Shelby at shelby@thenile.org or call the NILE Office at (406) 256-2499.

Program participants are chosen based on merit, future goals, and ability to care for the animal. 4-H or FFA members who are 12-16 years old may apply. Applicants are not limited to Montana residents. During the program duration, participants are responsible for caretaking, record keeping, breeding, and bringing the heifer back one year later to the NILE Stock Show & Rodeo. The class of Merit Heifer recipients competes for best phenotype, top showman honors, best record book, best interview and overall top herdsman. FROM THE

EDITOR Here we are – It’s the end of May! The usual activities for this time of year are the approaching finish of the school year and the start of county fairs. Kids are so excited for both! But since the pandemic cloud has hung over us for over a year now, we have to wonder - what is, or what will be, the new normal? Good question! I do think the past year has brought out the resilience in each of us, the ability to regroup or refocus, and figure out ways to make things happen. These are affirmations of the human spirit and a positive and inspiring truth to give us all faith and hope in the future!

P.O. Box 41430 • San Jose, CA 95160 (408) 888-2503 Publisher & Managing Editor: Heidi Beljean — (408) 888-2503 Email: pacshow@earthlink.net

Of course, we all want things to open up, to be able to attend our county fairs and have fun with friends. The good news is we are starting to have live jackpots and most county fairs are having some type of live grading events for 4-H and FFA kids to exhibit and compete with their animals. Kudos to fair management and dedicated helpers who are working hard to make that happen! I know kids, parents, leaders, and friends are so excited! Enjoy it all because we now know that things can be shut down and we can be limited again.

Production Manager & Art Director: William Crump — (662) 305-5434 Email: pacificshowcase@gmail.com Instagram and Facebook Management: Kaela Cooper – kaelacooper@aol.com Representatives: Kaela Cooper Tiffany Carter

And be sure to voice your appreciation to those fair and show supporters! Let’s all get out and support local businesses, support America, and support our livestock and agriculture industries! Let’s get our industry going again – full steam ahead. Support our 4-H, FFA, and Independent showmen at their local auctions! Supporting junior livestock auctions in turn supports our breeders, who work hard to raise animals for kids’ projects. It goes full circle – when you support one part of the circle, you help the entire circle!

For processing of new subscriptions - please allow 4 to 6 weeks. For address corrections, send current mailing label along with new address to Pacific Showcase.

For our CJLA community, you all know we have not had our 2020 Awards presentation yet. I may have mentioned this before, but at the first part of the year, we received communications from the State that because we are a non-profit, we would not be allowed to hold gatherings. That directive, plus the cancellation of Western Bonanza, where we normally handed out awards, plus rescheduling, finances, and the length of time to even get awards, have all conspired to set back when we can actually have an in-person ceremony. But we are still going to honor our members because they have worked so hard and deserve the best we can give them. It is our plan to have live presentations and as soon as we have details, we will let everyone know!

ABOUT THE

COVER

The familiar road we all know so well, the trek to and from our home to jackpots and fairs is a comfortable piece of asphalt that we all have so many memories along. For the Colburn Family that trek occurred along Highway 99 beginning in 1992, when Ron and Lisa Colburn and their sons Tyler and Ryan started buying and breeding heifers to exhibit across the competition California circuit. From the start, it was a family game — with younger sibling Wyatt and Abby tagging along, the family affair was making memories while winning jackpots. As the boys matured so did the Colburn Cattle Company operation. With a maturing operation the Colburn family set one goal, that has become the foundation to their program — produce top-quality cattle for the youth in today’s highly competitive junior livestock arena. We are proud to operate one of California’s most functional show cattle facilities where junior showmen can learn all aspects of the livestock industry. From daily care of cattle, to embryo transfer, our program has opportunities for all level of competitors. As we look to the future of Colburn Cattle we recognize the potential is endless and we could not be more excited for the set of animals we will be presenting at our next events. The highlight of these sales will be our Angus Heifer Sale the last week of March, our Angus Show Heifer Sale the last week of October and our Steer and Cross Bred Heifer Sale the first week of November. One of Abraham Hicks’ most famous quotes is “If you’re not excited about it, it’s not the right path.” Right now, at Colburn Cattle, with the management of the operation led by Matt Avila, we have achieved success never dreamed imaginable. We are humbled by the rewards of our work that started so long ago as a family pounding the pavement on the 99. It’s our dream that we create a path for success for more families chasing jackpots and fair titles. MAY/JUNE 2021

THE FFA IN YOUR STATE FFA News From Around the Western States

This time last year, the pandemic caused a lot of rapid changes to schedules and plans throughout the country. State FFA associations scrambled to put together virtual events in place of the normal in-person annual FFA Conventions. In true FFA fashion, leaders rose to the challenge and were able to conduct many contests, activities, and sessions for their state members in the new virtual formats.

CJLA NEWS & UPDATES Are you reading this and thinking about joining CJLA this year?

Hi Everyone! First things first – you will see that 2021 points are not in this issue. Usually when we meet a deadline to get points in the magazine, by the time the magazine arrives in your mailbox, the report has changed so this time we decided to not include it in this issue. Instead, we will send it out by email blast and post on the website. As of May 12th, I am waiting on results from a couple of shows. Once I get those, I will finish processing all the shows held to date and get it out to everyone. If you have any questions, please reach out to me by phone or email.

If you want to join, you can sign up and pay through the CJLA website. Your receipt through the payment section is your confirmation of completed enrollment. The last date to join for 2021 is June 1st. There are still plenty of shows scheduled later in the year for you to compete at. Just remember that points start once you fill out the membership application and pay the membership fee. So if you don’t join until the end of May but show at these early shows, those points won’t count! Questions? Contact Mary Ann at cjlainfo@yahoo.com.

This year got off to a slow start when shows were forced to cancel but once they got going, it has been amazing! The number of entries has been higher than ever and the excitement has been through the roof! Kudos to every show who worked so hard to make their event happen! The spring and early summer jackpots slow down a bit as county fairs happen, but CJLA shows will be full speed ahead throughout the fall! Please be sure to say Thank You to management, volunteers, and sponsors –it makes all their hard work worthwhile!

Are you interesting in helping out the CJLA Awards Program? We are completely reliant upon donations and sponsorships to cover the costs of awards. If you would like to help, donating is easy! You can go to our website – www.cjlainfo.com and click on the “Donate” button. Or you can call Heidi and talk to her – she can take your information over the phone or discuss what you would like to do.

I have been excited to see so many memberships pour into the CJLA office – and to see so many new members join this year too! We have said that the past couple of years have been a bit of a struggle and the pandemic didn’t help, but we are determined and motivated to move forward even better than before! CJLA will ALWAYS be about recognizing the efforts, hard work, and achievements of all our members, from the first-time exhibitor to the most advanced.

CJLA Questions? Emails can be sent to cjlainfo@yahoo.com or through the CJLA website: www.cjlainfo.com

What about the awards for 2020? We are determined to have a live ceremony and honor in-person our members who have worked so hard with their projects. More information is in Heidi’s editorial at the front of this issue, but I can tell you she has been in contact with the state to hold a group event and is making plans for the ceremony later in the year. We want to hold it at a location convenient for our members to come to. As soon as we have details, we will let everyone know. Your patience is appreciated! Just know that we are working hard to make it happen!
