EDITOR As I sat down to write this editorial, I took a few minutes to look through my calendar. I’m pretty good about keeping my planner up to date with future appointments, birthdays and special events, and whatever else I need to keep track of, so looking through my calendar helps keep me organized and is also a reminder of past events and where I am at today. My big revelation is that we are already into May and the first half of 2019 is almost over!

School finals and graduations are almost here, county fairs have started and everyone has a full schedule of things to do! Of course, State Fairs and your National Breed Shows are quickly approaching and that adds another whole level of planning and preparation. How do you prepare for all of it? And I know that many kids who are busy with livestock also have sports and other activities they are involved in, so schedules and organization are key to accomplishing it all. My advice is to get out that calendar and write down your plans, make a schedule, and have an agenda to focus on! And one more thing – talk to your family and those who help you because when you work together it is all possible and everything gets done better!

I mentioned above that the end of school means graduations. Grade school, high school, or college – these are important steps for your family members. As you finalize the last days of school, take some time to reflect on highlights and accomplishments of the past year. In the next issue we highlight Graduating Seniors with photos from the time they first started showing to their senior portraits. I love this section and am always a little surprised to realize that it doesn’t seem very long ago that I remember those kids when they first started showing and now here they are, ready for the next big step in life. The years truly do fly by, so be sure to treasure every moment!

We have all heard the phrase “our kids are our future”. In the agriculture industry we are all a part of, we are behind our youth 1000%. In this issue we highlight two major events that believe in our juniors! The first event is our annual CJLA Award Ceremony. In February we recognized and rewarded our 2018 members for their hard work and achievements throughout the past year. It is the hard work of those who put on weekend shows so our members and other youth can exhibit their project animals, and then our many sponsors, donors, and supporters who step up and help with our awards, that make it all possible. This year was exciting because we tried a new format by announcing and presenting awards ringside for each specie. Everyone enjoyed it and it was great to see so many people who came to watch and cheer for all the winners.

Agriculture kids are a diversified group who believe in the future of agriculture. With faith and hard work, it is our youth who will lead the way into the future. Truly inspiring! Bennett Land and Cattle is a commercial and registered cow-calf and Citrus operation located in the south central San Joaquin Valley near Ducor, California. The cattle ranch was homesteaded in the 1880s by Marti’s great-grandparents. John B. And Addie Dennis. Originally a dry farm ranch, Hereford cattle were introduced soon after. In the mid 1960s, Angus bulls were introduced to make a baldy herd as well. The practice of using Angus bulls as well as Hereford continues today. In the 1990s, a 4-H project led to the introduction of Shorthorn cattle. Today, you will find all three breeds to bean integral part of our vision to produce commercially acceptable cattle, irrespective of color, that perform in the field as well as the feedlot. The success that we have achieved in the show ring shows that the “look” doesn’t have to be sacrificed for commercial performance. Our registered cattle are expected to improve the performance of the commercial herd. Our newest Shorthorn herd is a Byland Global son who was that reserve calf champion at the NAILE in 2018, who looks to be a breed changer. 11

Process Allows Junior Exhibitors to Collect Their First Samples
Exhibitors wishing to enter their market animals (including market steers, market sheep, market barrows, market goats, wether dam does, crossbred gilts and wether dam wether sire sheep) in the Junior Livestock show at the 2019 State Fair must first register for the DNA Reservation and Collection online at www.castatefair.org/junior-livestock Upon registration, the exhibitor will receive a collection kit to be used for the hair sample collection process. NO Market Animal will be eligible for official entry unless this sample is obtained and an official Market Registration Form has been completed. All samples will be collected by the exhibitor and a parent or leader (NO EXCEPTIONS). Your cancelled check and/or postage receipt will serve as your receipt. You will not receive notification from the California State Fair upon receipt of your sample. PLEASE NOTE: This process does not enter your animal into the 2019 California State Fair, it is only a part of the necessary requirements you will need for the market division. All animals are required to be officially entered by the owner, pay the entry fee and do so by the official entry deadline June 12, 2019. Failure to comply with the following deadlines shall result in disqualification for competition in the 2019 California State Fair. CJLA NEWS & UPDATES
In this issue we have posted all 2019 CJLA members by Division. Please check the list for your name in the Divisions you signed up for. IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS OR ARE NOT ON THE LIST, YOU NEED TO CONTACT US RIGHT AWAY so we can check everything out on our end.
confusing so if you have a question as to what division you need to go in, contact us. 3. Steer Division – Please read our Rules for specific details on what qualifies steers to be shown in each of the 3 categories – based on breed or coloring. If you have a question about your particular animal, contact us.
Our Point Tabulator is working on calculating points from all the early shows so we will be posting an update soon. We will send the update out by E-blast, post on the CJLA website and also put a notice on our CJLA Facebook when the points can be viewed. We know that everyone wants to see the points posted quickly so I wanted to share a few facts with you about how the first of the year looks from our side. From January 1st through April 30th, there are 13 weekends – 11 of those weekends have sanctioned shows scheduled. With the events holding multiple shows there are actually 18 sanctioned shows during those 11 weekends. For those 18 shows, there are a total of 88 separate specie reports. Then the shows have to format their show results and send us their reports. THEN we have to process those 88 specie reports separately for our 350 current year members. Even if you don’t count in putting out several issues of the Pacific Showcase magazine AND planning, organizing and holding the Award Ceremony, it is still a huge amount of work to process everything in the first months of the year.
4. Showmanship for all species – Our rules state you must show YOUR OWN ANIMAL in showmanship! It is not fair to other exhibitors to borrow an animal because it will do better in showmanship. Remember that everyone has to go through the same thing when they start over with new or young animals! 5. Show-ring help – Our rules state that an animal MUST BE SHOWN BY THE PERSON WHO ENTERS IT IN THE SHOW – unless that person has more than one in the same class. This does not mean it is ok for someone else to show an entry in the final drive and have the exhibitor stand next to it! If an animal is unruly or an exhibitor is young, then that should be addressed with show management to request someone to be with the exhibitor in case something happens, but that exhibitor is still the one who needs to be doing the actual handling and showing of the animal. It was an awesome day of celebrating our CJLA kids! We tried a new format this year where we announced awards ringside for each Division throughout the day. We thought it worked out great and would love to hear your comments or thoughts on the changes. We are so grateful to all our sponsors and supporters who help to make this event all come together for our members.
We encourage you to keep track of the shows you go to and your placings for all your entries. This makes it much easier for us if you provide your information along with any inquiries you have regarding your points. When you are figuring your points, remember that your top eight shows count for year-end totals but the tie breakers for both division and showmanship are the number of shows you earned points at in that division. 1. Market Heifers and Commercial Heifers are not eligible for CJLA points because we do not have divisions for them. They are also not eligible for showmanship points because our rules state that an animal MUST be shown in a CJLA division in order to also be entered and shown in CJLA showmanship. Therefore, because Market Heifers and Commercial Heifers are not eligible for CJLA division points, they are also not eligible to be shown for CJLA showmanship points.

Madera County 4-H Crowned 2019 State Champion Livestock Judging Team November 2019.
UC Davis College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences held its 43rd Annual Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Field Day on Friday, March 1st and Saturday, March 2nd, 2019. This Field Day is open to FFA and 4-H students from California and surrounding states. These students come to Davis to compete in 25 different agriculturally based judging contests, ranging from livestock judging to agriculture computer applications. UC Davis students from a variety of majors coordinate the contests. Faculty, staff, and local community members volunteer their time to make this event possible.

The First Place Team may select which contest for which they will represent California. North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE), Louisville, Kentucky; American Royal, Kansas City, MO; and Western National Round-Up, Denver, CO., are the three events they may choose from.
This event is the California State Qualifier for poultry, dairy, and livestock judging. In order to compete in national contest, 4-H youth must first qualify at a State Qualifying Event. The Madera County 4-H Livestock Judging Team was crowned State Champions at the UC Davis 4-H Finals Contest and will represent California at the NAILE in Louisville, KY in
California State Fair Cancels Open Swine Show for 2019 March 25, 2019 — Announcement from the California Pork Producers Association to its membership.
Throughout the many years that the California State Fair Livestock Programs have existed, many of the traditions and program elements have steadily remained the same. In order for the California State Fair to continue to be sustainable into the future we are now tasked with having to make some hard choices and inevitable changes. Some of these decisions have resulted in either eliminating or drastically changing some of our long-standing programs.
Good Afternoon CPPA Members, Earlier today, California State Fair informed CPPA that it will not be offering an Open Swine Show for 2019. Please see the announcement below for details. The California State Fair continuously strives to deliver high quality livestock competitions that are evaluated by nationally recognized judges in all species with the hope of providing an overall great livestock show experience for both our exhibitors and fair guests.
After a considerable amount of research, discussion and cost analysis of the Open Swine Shows over the past several years, fair staff has concluded that due to multiple ongoing factors, including a decline in entries and the number of exhibitors participating along with increasing costs and expenses associated with the show, it is with regret that the California State Fair will not be offering an Open Swine Show for 2019.
Due to the ever-increasing costs of doing business as a State Agency, Cal Expo had to make significant immediate cuts and operational changes beginning in August of 2018. While these cuts have been beneficial on a temporary basis, they are not sustainable into the future and service levels for not only fair time events are being heavily impacted. As a result, it has become imperative for the competitive programs department to take a hard look at all of the programs we offer.
We will be sending a letter from Cal Expo to all of the Open Swine Exhibitors explaining this difficult decision but felt it was important that we informed you and the CPPA Board of Directors of this outcome prior to the mailing of the letter.
Fairs and Expos: Engage, But Don’t Forget Security Principles

Summer is almost here. For many of us in agriculture that means one thing: fair season. County and state fairs will be in full swing very soon, giving 4-H and FFA members the opportunity to show off another year of hard work. In addition to allowing us to catch up with friends and compete in the show ring, fairs also give all of us involved in animal agriculture a unique chance to connect and engage with the general public.
Unfortunately, animal rights activist orgs also see fairs as major opportunities to spread misinformation about our industry. Activist groups have been vocally targeting 4-H and FFA recently, saying that these programs turn “innocent young children into murderers.” All fair organizers and exhibitors should keep the following security principles in mind. • All events should have a crisis plan outlining who should do what in various scenarios – protests, disruptions, etc. Crisis plans can also address natural disasters, accidents and other issues that may arise during the event. During this planning process, local law enforcement should be consulted about how to handle activist activity at fairs.
In order to make the most of your time at the fair, I recommend taking the following proactive steps. • Make sure everyone who will be working with animals on the grounds is well-versed in proper animal care. All fairs should have an animal care policy that exhibitors review and sign. This policy should be posted on the fairgrounds.
• Keep an eye out for suspicious activity: people carrying signs or other protest materials, someone taking a strange amount of photos/ videos or talking into a phone or camera, individuals asking very direct questions, etc. Report any concerns immediately to fair management.
• Prepare all exhibitors, family members, volunteers and event staff to handle consumer questions positively and enthusiastically. I know answering the same basic questions repeatedly can be tiring, but this could be someone’s only interaction with agriculture for the year – we need to make sure it is a positive one.
• Avoid confrontation. Activists want attention – please avoid giving it to them. Keep your cool and let law enforcement or event management handle any issues. I hope this advice helps ensure that any fairs you participate in remain positive experiences for all. Happy show season!

THE FFA IN YOUR STATE Winners Announced at the 91st California State FFA Conference The 91st annual California State FFA Leadership Conference, themed “Believe,” was held at the Anaheim Convention Center April 25-28. The conference inspired and challenged students to learn about agriculture and leadership.
Throughout each of the sessions, students were recognized for their outstanding work in numerous categories including speaking contests, proficiency awards, star awards and scholarships. More than $100,000 was awarded to students to further their education and projects.
More than 6,500 FFA members participated in seven sessions featuring keynote speakers and awards along with educational workshops, agricultural tours, competitions and a career show. In addition, the 676 delegates representing 338 chapters conducted the business of the student-led FFA organization.

5 Tips to Achieve Healthy Hair in the Summer By Jessica Judge, Sure Champ Representative
Make sure you spend the time to really cool them off and get cool water all over their body; this will help to lower their overall body temperature. 3. Work, Work, Work the Hair
It is NO secret. It is A LOT more fun to work on achieving a healthy hair coat in the winter and early spring. Outside temperatures are cooler, cattle are shaggy, and they are naturally growing plenty of hair on their own. But growing hair for the summer is a different story. You go out to the barn and your cattle are itchy and rubbing because of dry skin, it’s hot outside and hair is DEAD. Growing hair in the summer takes much more effort and dedication, but it isn’t impossible to achieve if you establish a routine and keep things systematic.
After rinsing, there is really no need to blow your calf out with such little hair, so you should focus on getting them dry by brushing. Get your animal tied up in the barn under fans and brush the hair straight forward with either a rice root brush or a plastic wash brush. If you want to grow hair, you have to brush A LOT in order to stimulate the hair follicles to grow (until if feels like your arm might fall off). Once you have made several passes brushing forward, and your calf starts to grow a little more hair, you can start working the hair more at a 45-degree angle. When your calf is dried from brushing or from standing under the fans, you should apply some sheen or light oil to keep the hair hydrated and fresh.
1. Shed it or Shear it In the same way you pack away your winter coats when spring and summer come – you need to get rid of your calf’s winter coat of hair before you can focus on new growth. The average hair growth cycle for show cattle is 90 days, thus you should aim to have all the old, dead hair removed 90 days prior to your targeted goal. For example, if your state or county fair is in August, you should plan to have the hair removed by mid-May. There are two basic ways to shuck the dead hair.
Keeping hair and skin hydrated this time of year is so important. With so much rinsing and brushing, you are stripping the hair and skin of its natural oils each time, and thus it is vital that you condition the skin and apply some type of product after each rinsing and brushing session to ensure that some of the natural oils are restored to the animal and its hide is healthy. Keep in mind, whatever oil or product you use should be very light. You want to steer clear of heavy oils, as these will only heat your animal up more and also matte the hair, attracting dirt to cling to it. Keep it light, keep it clean and keep it hydrated!
The fastest way, and arguably the most common method is to shear your calf. This can be done with a plucking blade or a beveled come or blade. Start at the topline of your animal and clip in a downward stroke all the way to the belly line. At this point you should leave and blend about 1-2 inches of hair above the belly line, hind quarter and fore arm. Additionally, you can leave the tailhead hair and blend it the same way you blend the hair below the belly line. There is a good chance that in some parts of the country, you have already shorn your calf. Depending on your spring show season, some calves will get shorn in the first part of March. However, by the end of April, all cattle should be shorn off if you are expecting to grow healthy summer hair. Once your animal is shorn, you might want to consider using a pour-on product like prolate to kill any lice or external pests that cause dry skin or itching.
4. Create a Cold Spell in the Midst of Summer Hair growth is all related to the mind and body working together. If the animal thinks it is preparing for winter, they will most likely grow a thicker hair coat at a faster rate. However, without some barn management, it’s not going to feel much like winter during the longer, brighter days of spring and summer. If you have a cooler, make sure to get your calves rinsed and tied in early in the morning and turned out later when the sun goes down. If you don’t have a cooler, the same rules apply. Try to find a place in your barn where you can turn the lights off or reduce the amount of daylight. Tie your calf in under fans early, work their hair and perhaps rinse again and turn out later in the evening when temperatures decrease. When it comes to hair growth in the summer, it’s about mind over matter.
The second method for dead hair removal is to use a shedding tool like a shedding comb or brush. This method is going to take a lot more muscle, dedication and time, but it is effective to ensure the that any new, healthy hair growing is not lost. You will want to make sure to start this process early and use the shedding comb often to get all the dead hair removed in time.
5. Pay Attention to What’s in the Pan The last step to consistent and healthy hair growth is to make sure you are following a good nutrition program, and your calf is receiving the nutrients vital to hair growth. Make sure your animal is getting a quality vitamin or mineral supplement like Sure Champ®. Additionally, many exhibitors also add melatonin to their feed, which specifically targets hair growth.
2. It’s a go for H2O When the old hair is gone, it’s time to promote a new, healthy hair coat and that starts with getting them on the wash rack. Rinsing your animal at least once, if not twice a day and using conditioner will help to start and promote new hair growth. You should try to limit the amount of times you wash with soap to about once or twice a week. The more you use soap, the more it dries out the skin and hide which can encourage your cattle to itch and rub.
If you want healthy hair in the heat of summer, you have to be prepared to work hard. But with all things, you get out what you put in. Make a plan and work your plan EVERY. DAY. to make healthy hair a reality.
If it is warm outside, make the most of your time spent rinsing. Start the cold water on their feet and legs, then belly and work your way up the calf.

Des Moines, IA, April 10, 2019 – The National Pork Producers Council’s board of directors today announced its decision to cancel World Pork Expo 2019 out of an abundance of caution as African swine fever (ASF) continues to spread in China and other parts of Asia. World Pork Expo, held each June at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines, hosts approximately 20,000 visitors over three days, including individuals and exhibitors from ASF-positive regions. African swine fever affects only pigs and presents no human health or food safety risks. There is currently no vaccine to treat the swine disease. “While an evaluation by veterinarians and other third-party experts concluded negligible risk associated with holding the event, we have decided to exercise extreme caution,” said David Herring, NPPC president and a producer from Lillington, North Carolina. “The health of the U.S. swine herd is paramount; the livelihoods of our producers depend on it. Prevention is our only defense against ASF and NPPC will continue to do all it can to prevent its spread to the United States.” The decision to cancel this year’s World Pork Expo comes as more than 100 U.S pork producers gather in Washington this week to meet with their members of Congress during NPPC’s Legislative Action Conference. To augment the USDA’s efforts to protect the United States from ASF and other animal diseases, U.S. pork producers are asking Congress to appropriate funding for 600 new U.S. Customs and Border Protection agriculture inspectors to further strengthen our defenses against African swine fever. “Our farmers are highly export dependent,”

CJLA Essay Contest "Attitude, Flexibility, and Focus" By Josh Col, 1st Place Winner, 13-15 Division According to Weaver Leather’s List of Principles to Live and Lead, the definition of attitude is “the capacity to stay positive and optimistic despite the circumstances.” My idea of the word attitude is constantly changing because my attitude is not always consistent. My attitude is dependent on how I am feeling, the time of the day, and how much I’ve eaten. When I think of how the work attitude applies in my life, I think about being at my pig barn. At the barn, attitude is everything because it affects how the pigs work and how my family and I interact together. If I have a negative attitude while working my pig it can result in my pig becoming stressed which may ultimately undo the work that has been put into training my pig therefore; it is important that I always have a positive attitude. When I train my pig with a positive attitude the pig responds positively and cooperates with me. At school, my attitude impacts how I talk to and work with my classmates and teachers. At school I do my best to speak kindly to my teachers and fellow class mates because these interactions have a large impact on not only the classroom environment but, more importantly the success of each of us. According to Weaver Leather’s List of Principles to Live and Lead, the definition of flexibility is “the willingness to change or compromise as a situation requires.” In order to be flexible an individual must be willing to adapt as required to meet the objectives of a situation. How flexible I am affects my how I address problems and tasks and how I can come up with creative ways to resolve situations.

Also, I must commonly be flexible at school, in particular regarding my time management. It is often hard to predict what my homework schedule will be, so I must remain flexible so that I can complete my homework and prepare properly for my exams. Sometimes I have a school assignment and the only time I have to do it is during my free time. While sometimes I have other plans, which I would prefer to take part in instead, I know I have to be flexible and take time to make sure that I have all A’s. Last, I am flexible with my schedule because I am a part of the youth showing community which, at times requires me to miss school. According to Weaver Leather’s List of Principles to Live and Lead, the definition of orderliness is “organizing and caring for responsibilities and possessions efficiently.” Orderliness is a word that describes me because I like to be neat. Also, having everything just so is not enough, I like it to be perfect. Some may even say that I have OCD. I apply orderliness in life by making sure everything is done the right way the first time so that I don’t have to do it again a second time. I have noticed when I am organized and properly take care of my responsibilities the first time, I feel much less stressed and I am overall happier. I exhibit orderliness at school by making sure that all my school work is organized and that I myself am organized. To accomplish this goal, I have to make sure that I am aware of deadlines on a daily basis. At home I exhibit orderliness through ensuring that all of my chores are done. After, I make sure to check with my family to ensure that there are no tasks that I can help with. While a positive attitude, flexibility, and orderliness are only a few principles I use in my everyday life at school, at home, and with my pigs; I have found that these characteristics make me truly successful.
One way I have had to be flexible in the past is when making food for my pigs. Sometimes when I am making food for my pigs I don’t have all of the specific ingredients so I have to be flexible and choose a different feed to be sufficient for my pigs' needs. The word flexibility applies in my life when I am at our family ranch and I am driving around on my A.T.V. Sometimes there are obstructions on the path I planned to take so I have to be flexible

CJLA Essay Contest By Rhys Ludlow, 1st Place Winner, 13-15 Division CJLA Essay Contest I have heard a saying throughout my life “At least once in your life you will need a Lawyer, a Police officer, a Doctor, and a Priest but every day three times a day you will need a person in the ag industry”. While this is a very true statement I don't think we give enough recognition to the organizations that shape the people that are in this industry, like CJLA, 4-H, and FFA. One thing that I have learned from these organizations is how to have a great attitude when facing challenges. Attitude is everything especially when you show and raise livestock. Animals interpret your feelings based on body language. You always have to have a calm temperament in order for the animals to not react negatively. This also translates throughout your life to keep your composure no matter what the situation. So not only are these organizations raising the next generation of people immersed in ag, but are teaching the younger generations of people life skills. Another attribute that these youth groups have taught me, is how to be motivated. Staying motivated is a super important skill that is vital to be successful throughout life. You have to be able to motivate yourself and others while being positive and open to new
ways of doing things. I have found this motivation through showing livestock. Every aspect of it makes me want to move forward to become the best I am able to be. When it comes to showing and preparing to show it is extremely exhilarating. When you go into the show ring and show off all that you have worked for. There are so many emotions flowing, pride, nervousness, and anticipation all balled up into one. The best thing for me is a champion title to show that all of my hard work has paid off. I enjoy demonstrating the traits that showing livestock has taught me, how to be passionate, patient, and productive. I have been blessed to have many mentors throughout the time I have been showing. My biggest influences have been breeders, 4-h leaders, and my family. While I have learned so much during the time I have been showing I still have a lot to learn and I continue to learn every day. Lots of kids choose different activities to participate in. Even though I like to do other things. Showing has been my main focus this year. It is so important to me to be successful showing that I chose to skip a year on the alpine race team this winter. It has really paid off. I have enjoyed the most rewarding year since I started showing. I can't wait for a new season of shows and all that it brings. I would not have these opportunities if it wasn’t for CJLA. Thank you to everyone that makes all of this possible for me, and so many other kids that feel as passionate about showing livestock. We couldn’t do it without your support.
