FROM THE

EDITOR

Well, a full year has gone by since Covid-19 became the top news story and the country was put on lockdown! A year ago no one expected this to become a pandemic that would still be front and center in our lives a year later.

P.O. Box 41430 • San Jose, CA 95160 (408) 888-2503

I know, things changed for all of us! Closures, cancellations, school from home, life as we knew it – changed! We struggled, we rebelled, we complained, and we didn’t want to believe that we couldn’t do our usual things. Humans are creatures of habit – we love our routines and doing the things we enjoy – going to school, going shopping, meeting with friends to have fun, vacations – the list goes on and on. The months did bring some acceptance and, most importantly, a renewed human spirit to find ways to do things we cared about. A lot of it was different, but we found out things were possible!

But I have to say thank you to God that things are starting to change! With vaccines being available and active cases going down in a lot of areas, things are starting to reopen and return to a sort of normalcy. Yahoo!! I am doing the Happy Dance!

For us livestock enthusiasts, it couldn’t come any sooner. The virtual shows were a great bridge last year to give the kids some way to compete and show off their animals. County Fairs stepped up and figured out a way (mostly virtual) to give their exhibitors an opportunity to have their animals judged and then auctioned in a virtual junior livestock auction. It has been pretty awesome and amazing to see the dedication, positive spirit, and affirmation of this industry’s resilience over the past year of unimaginable hurdles! The first months of 2021 were a bit slow as the State dictated what venues could do, but it is getting better!

As you read this, some shows have been held. Some new protocols were put in place and schedules reformatted, but it had to have been the best feeling to stand ringside again, or see friends and visit, or just do something you love as a family again! I don’t think we are at a point of forgetting what we need to do to stay safe, though. Not just safe for you, but safe for those around you. So wear the mask, keep a distance, wash hands, and use the hand sanitizer. Be respectful of what other people are doing to feel safe. And be sure to say thank you to those who have worked hard to make their show possible!

Pacific Showcase is published bimonthly. It is mailed first class and third class bulk mail at Morgan Hill, California. Postmaster: send address changes to Pacific Showcase, P.O. Box 41430, San Jose, CA 95160. Subscriptions: (Bulk mail - one year - $25; two years - $45.) (First class - one year - $35; two years $65.) For processing of new subscriptions - please allow 4 to 6 weeks. For address corrections, send current mailing label along with new address to Pacific Showcase.

For me, the past year of Covid-19 was heaped on something I was already dealing with since the previous year. Some of you have noticed that I haven’t been out and about at sales or shows for a while. Actually it’s been two years this March! That’s when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I’ve gone through two rounds of chemo, one round of radiation, and a double mastectomy, and officially – as of January 19th – I am in remission! I am definitely doing the Happy Dance!

Time to Plan Ahead! The May/June 2021 Issue is our

Junior Nationals and County Fairs Issue

With all this, my immunity is low and I need to be very careful about what I am exposed to. Because of this and the added factor of Covid-19, I still can’t be out and about and around other people. But I am hopeful that by mid-summer or fall, I can get out to some shows or sales or events and see everyone. I can’t wait to see people in person and visit! I really miss those in-person hugs and smiles and laughs!

Give us a call!

This magazine and CJLA have given me something important to focus on through my health struggles. I do both because I love this industry so much and believe so strongly in it. It would have been easy to just say “I can’t do it anymore” when all I could think about was getting through the day. But just as people rose

Ottenwalter Show Pigs is a 300 sow full service show pig operation located in Colusa, California. We host live farm sales each spring focused on the summer fair season here on the west coast. Starting in May, we shift the remainder of our sales for the year to the online venue showpig.com. Regardless of the sale or the price of the pig we sell, we pride ourselves on the level of customer service we are able to provide for our customers. Helping them succeed is our ultimate goal and it's what motivates us each and every day to go out and do what we do. Through videos, text, and email we help families with feeding and management programs for their show pigs on a daily basis, whether they're showing at a local or national level. We also trive to be a main source for the show pig industry's genetic improvement, and our boar stud contains many of the most influential sires in the country. Our 2021 sales schedule along with our #BreedOttenwalter boars can be found on our webpage, www.ottenwaltershowpigs.com. Please let us know how we can be a part of you and your family's show pig experience.

up to find opportunities for our livestock kids, my magazine and CJLA gave me strength to keep doing for my subscribers, for this industry, and for the livestock kids, too. Most days I would have someone call, or text, or email, to see how I was doing, to offer support and encouragement, and to share news of good things happening out in the livestock world. Each contact was uplifting and reaffirming and I am so blessed and so grateful and so thankful for each and every one I heard from! CJLA News – Yes, we will still have an awards program for the 2020 winners! We want to do a live presentation, not virtual! We want to honor and recognize your achievements in person, so we are working hard on figuring out the details on where and when and we will keep you updated just as soon as we can confirm plans. MARCH/APRIL 2021

CJLA NEWS & UPDATES The CJLA Show Season unfortunately got off to a slow start this year. The January and February shows were ready to go with all schedules and protocols in place but Covid-19 and the State of California had other plans. It was definitely a disappointment for everyone but the optimism for the coming months is exciting! As you read this, several shows HAVE been held and we are all so appreciative of their continued determination to have an event for you! Please be sure to say Thank You to management, volunteers, and sponsors –it makes all their hard work worthwhile!

your confirmation of completed enrollment. We did change the last date to join for the year from March 31st to June 1st. If you aren’t sure about joining right now, you have a bit more time to decide and there are still plenty of shows scheduled later in the year for you to compete at. Just remember that points start once you fill out the membership application and pay the membership fee. So if you don’t join until the end of May but show at these early shows, those points won’t count! Questions? Contact Mary Ann at cjlainfo@yahoo.com.

I want to close this page with a very important message:

I am excited to see so many memberships pour into the CJLA office – and to see so many new members join this year too! We have said that the past couple of years have been a bit of a struggle and the pandemic didn’t help, but we are determined and motivated to move forward even better than before! We have been listening to ideas, comments, and suggestions, and want you to know that we have heard you! We have some ideas that we will be sharing with you in the months ahead. I think it is also important to say that changes take some time. They aren’t something we can implement in the spur of the moment. We need to think about how any updates affect all our shows, as well as our members, and how CJLA can successfully and financially make any changes. With that said, CJLA will ALWAYS be about recognizing the efforts, hard work, and achievements of all our members, from the firsttime exhibitor to the most advanced.

CJLA was formed for kids who love to show and to recognize their efforts with their animals and their achievements in the show ring. CJLA is totally dedicated to the future and doing everything we can for our members. The importance of the CJLA is evident when you see all the shows that want to sanction and be a part of what we do! The CJLA is a non-profit organization. The awards program is completely reliant upon donations and sponsorships to cover the costs of awards. This year is tough and we REALLY NEED HELP with donations and sponsorships to purchase awards. We are asking you to PLEASE think about what you can do – or who you know who would like to give support to our amazing members. Now more than ever, is not the time to say “someone else will”. Donating is easy! You can go to our website – www.cjlainfo.com and click on the “Donate” button. Or you can call Heidi and talk to her – she can take your information over the phone or discuss what you would like to do. Please just don’t put it off! Help us out and help our members – every little bit helps!!

An updated CJLA schedule is in this issue and is posted on the CJLA website. We have had positive responses from all the shows listed that they will be able to hold their events. A few are still in question but are listed because if at all possible, they are planning on happening. BUT you should check with the shows you plan to attend, and follow them on their social media, for up-to-the-minute news from them. WHAT ABOUT THE AWARDS FOR 2020? By the time you are reading this, we have sent an E-blast out to all 2020 members, but for those of you still wondering… with Western Bonanza having to cancel, we have been looking for a new venue to have our Award Presentation. We have also received letters from the State saying we could not hold gatherings but hopefully with Covid-19 restrictions lifting, that ruling will be updated and we will find out what details are needed to stay in compliance. We are determined to have a live ceremony and really do not want to go virtual because it just isn’t the same as in person, and the cost of shipping would be horribly expensive. So our Presentation may be a bit later in the year but it will happen! We will keep everyone updated as plans get locked in.

The 2021 CJLA Rule Book is also on the website and we encourage everyone to print a copy for reference and to review the rules throughout the year. If you have any questions about membership, divisions, or rules, please contact us right away so we can help you and you don’t miss out on any part of the association! It is much better to ask than to not know an answer or miss out on something! So…go full speed ahead into 2021! Set new goals and work hard to achieve them! Be sure to enjoy the journey along the way! We will see you on the road! CJLA Questions? Emails can be sent to cjlainfo@yahoo.com or through the CJLA website: www.cjlainfo.com

Lane Toledo Earns Junior Bronze and Silver Awards Lane Toledo, Visalia, Calif., has earned the National Junior Angus Association’s (NJAA) Bronze and Silver awards, according to Jaclyn Upperman, education and events director of the American Angus Association® in Saint Joseph, Mo.

Records (AHIR®) and consigned cattle in the Partners for Performance Bull Sale. The Bronze and Silver awards are the first two levels of the NJAA Recognition Program that began in 1972. Junior Angus breeders must apply for the awards, then meet point requirements in many areas of participation before receiving the honors. Applicants are evaluated in areas of junior Angus association activities and leadership, participation in showmanship, contests and shows, using performance testing to improve their herd and their progress in producing and merchandising Angus cattle.

Toledo is the 11-year-old son of John and Kelli Toledo and attends George McCann Memorial School. He is a member of the NJAA and the California Junior Angus Association, where he has served as historian. He has participated in local, state, regional and national shows and showmanship contests. At the National Junior Angus Show (NJAS), Toledo participated in the photography, graphic design and poster contests and the All-American Certified Angus Beef® Cook-Off. In 2020 he received the Tom Burke Young Angus Achievement Awards Endowment Fund.

The NJAA promotes the involvement of young people in raising Angus cattle, while also providing leadership and selfdevelopment opportunities for the nearly 4,500 active members nationwide.

He has submitted weight data to the Angus Herd Improvement

Pacific Showcase does something every year to honor these Seniors.

1– Just send their senior picture AND a picture when they first started showing. 2– Write their name, the town they're from, the name of the high school they're graduating from, the college they are attending, the major they've chosen, and the species they showed — on a piece of paper and send them in to: Pacific Showcase P.O. Box 41430, San Jose, CA 95160

Deadline to send pictures in is June 15th. We will be featuring these pictures in the July/August issue.

You can also send the photos and information by email to

Also, include a self-addressed, stamped envelope if you want the pictures back.

Please put "Graduating" in the subject line!
