Here we are, Spring is upon us!

Last year at this time, my whole life turned upside down. I know many of you have been wondering where I have been the past year, and why I haven’t been at any shows or events. It is time for me to tell you that last year I was diagnosed with breast cancer and cancer in the lymph nodes under my armpit. I know at Western Bonanza a lot of you had questions about me so I wanted to be up front about what I have been dealing with. It has been a difficult journey to say the least, and while I have had to put all my focus and strength into this fight, I want you to know that one of the things that has helped me so much is the love, support, and prayers I have received. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the encouragement your kindness has given me!

I am doing good and am in great hands with the doctors and nurses at Stanford! I so missed being at Western Bonanza last month, to see everyone, and to honor our CJLA kids for their year of accomplishments! I was there in spirit!! I definitely miss being out and about, and visiting with everyone – as you know, that is SO me! I know God just put this little bump in the road to wake me up and appreciate all that I have! My family and friends, my faith, and my livestock family give me the strength and motivation to get through the rough days and they get me inspired on the good days to kick this cancer’s butt and get on with life!

Thank you again to everyone for the positive thoughts – I can feel each one and draw strength from you all.

The CJLA Award Ceremony was held on February 15th during the Western Bonanza Jr Livestock Show. We are so appreciative of our friends who come to help with getting it all done – WE COULDN’T DO IT WITHOUT YOU! And thanks to the Western Bonanza students who checked in, pitched in, and checked back in often, to make sure we had everything we needed and that everything ran smoothly between their shows and our award ceremonies. What an awesome group of young people that Cal Poly can be proud of! In our next issue we will have all the highlights of our outstanding members and the awards presentations.

Ottenwalter Show Pigs is a 330 sow full service show pig operation located in Colusa, California. We host five live farm sales each spring focused on the summer fair season here on the west coast. Starting in late May, we shift the remainder of our sales for the year to the online venue showpig.com. CJLA NEWS & UPDATES The first few months of 2020 have zoomed by and the CJLA show season is in full swing! February 15th was our Award Presentations honoring the 2019 members for their many achievements over the past year. In the next issue of this magazine we will feature the highlights of the big event. I would like to say THANK YOU to our great group of people who came to help out and made everything go smoothly, to the Western Bonanza crew who helped with anything we needed and who made sure scheduling between the shows and our ceremonies ran like clockwork. And to our sponsors and those who donated for the silent auction – your support is amazing!

We have always planned point updates to coordinate with each issue of the Pacific Showcase magazine starting with the May/June issue, then the July/August, September/October, and November/ December issue. It is our goal to work toward getting updates out more often and as I said, we are giving this high priority!

A few show updates here you need to know about! A big shout-out to Gold Country Jackpot who sanctioned their steer show (2 shows!) with us for the first time this year! Your support was awesome! We have a new show on May 2nd ! Breeder’s Classic – Mkt Goats, Wether Dam Does, Mkt Lambs, Wether Dam Ewes. It will be held at the Ed Hughes Arena in Ione. Be sure to check out their Facebook posts for all the details! And the CNHA Hereford Classic Show has moved their date up to October 24-25 in Yuba City.

The CJLA Rule Book is posted on the website and we recommend everyone print a copy for your reference! We would like to remind everyone that the CJLA Rules were made with an effort for fairness to all exhibitors and members. We have always been proud of our members and the way in which our livestock youth conduct themselves in life and in competition. Each of you set an example for the younger ones coming up behind you – just as those you looked up to did when you first started out.

As we go forward this year, we will be working on making CJLA better! In response to many inquiries, WE HAVE POSTED A SURVEY addressing some questions and comments we have received in the past months. The survey is on the CJLA website, our Facebook page has a link to the survey, and we have sent it out in E-blasts to our members. Please take a few minutes to fill it out and submit it back to us. Your feedback is very important to us and will help us as we go forward. It does not do any good to complain in the barn but not let us know your thoughts – WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU! This first survey we will take responses until April 15th. After that we will address the comments and start from there.

I think this is about all the news for now …… so go full speed into the weeks and months ahead! Set new goals and work hard to achieve them! Be sure to enjoy the journey along the way!
