FROM THE

EDITOR Take a moment to take a deep breath! The days fly by and it is already March 2019! If you have a year that starts out like mine, you are extremely busy! Mine is rush, rush, rush! Time literally goes from January 1st to March 1st in a flash. I start off at a full run working on the magazine issue, getting CJLA awards ordered, and planning and accounting for all the details that go into the awards ceremony. This year we completely changed up how we announced and recognized our 2018 winners, so for us we had a lot more planning to do to figure out how it was all going to work! I was so happy when it all came together and worked out wonderfully! So much energy and thought has been wrapped up in getting that completed and then getting caught up with everything else that needs to be done after we get home, that I definitely found the need to take a few deep breaths! I’m not sure if the saying about “the older you get, the slower you go” is true! Ha Ha! But bear with me – I will get caught up!

In the next issue, we will have the complete write-up about the Award Ceremony so be sure to stay tuned for that, but I just wanted to thank all our sponsors for believing in the CJLA and supporting the organization. And congratulations to all the winners, a huge thanks to all the wonderful people who show up every year to help put on this great event for the kids! 2019 is looking to be a record year with more members than ever. If you have any questions, let us know. And be sure to check out our Upcoming Events section in this issue to see what’s happening in the months ahead! And I’d like to remind everyone that as you attend the many jackpot shows and show camps and livestock events in the coming months, please be sure to say "Thank You" to those who put them on! Voicing your appreciation is the best reward for all the hard work that goes into putting on an event.

Spring time is a busy time for everyone with FFA activities, miles travelled to shows and jackpots, school events, sports, family time. So much to do – how do you get it all done? I found it helps me to make lists and to plan ahead. Sure, the things on the list may change but it’s like a road map – there may be alternate routes but the destination is the same. If your goal is to jackpot, then push yourself to become a more skilled showman and more knowledgeable in taking care of your animals. If you are in FFA you have the opportunity most weekends to take part in different contests, competitions, and conferences. These activities are important in so many ways! They build your resume for college and beyond. Stand Out, Excel, and Succeed – 3 things that FFA has done a great job of promoting for its’ members. The highlight of the FFA year is the State FFA Convention. In the next issue, we will report on FFA Activities throughout the western states.

ABOUT THE

COVER

The familiar road we all know so well, the trek to and from our home to jackpots and fairs is a comfortable piece of asphalt that we all have so many memories along. For the Colburn Family that trek occurred along Highway 99 beginning in 1992, when Ron and Lisa Colburn and their sons Tyler and Ryan started buying and breeding heifers to exhibit across the competition California circuit. From the start, it was a family game — with younger sibling Wyatt and Abby tagging along, the family affair was making memories while winning jackpots. As the boys matured so did the Colburn Cattle Company operation. With a maturing operation the Colburn family set one goal, that has become the foundation to their program — produce top-quality cattle for the youth in today’s highly competitive junior livestock arena. We are proud to operate one of California’s most functional show cattle facilities where junior showmen can learn all aspects of the livestock industry. From daily care of cattle, to embryo transfer, our program has opportunities for all level of competitors. As we look to the future of Colburn Cattle we recognize the potential is endless and we could not be more excited for the set of animals we will be presenting at our next events. The highlight of these sales will be our Angus Heifer Sale the last week of March, our Angus Show Heifer Sale the last week of October and our Steer and Cross Bred Heifer Sale the first week of November.

One of Abraham Hicks’ most famous quotes is “If you’re not excited about it, it’s not the right path.” Right now, at Colburn Cattle, with the management of the operation led by Matt Avila, we have achieved success never dreamed imaginable. We are humbled by the rewards of our work that started so long ago as a family pounding the pavement on the 99. It’s our dream that we create a path for success for more families chasing jackpots and fair titles. 11

awards and activities (including related work experience).

CPPA Founder, Visionary and Agriculturalist — His Dream Lives On

Two Letters of Recommendation.

Copy of Transcripts.

As each year passes, more and more people realize that impact that William “Bill” Silveira had on the California Pork Producers Association (CPPA). A visionary, Bill poured his heart and soul into making CPPA Work for pork producers. This legacy lives on today.

The following shall apply to Scholarship Recipients:

After Bill’s passing his loving wife Sofia started a scholarship fund for junior CPPA members in his memory. Bill believed in young people and knew providing them opportunities would pay dividends well into the future. The Silveira Scholarship Fund was established to help cultivate future CPPA and agriculture industry leaders. With the support of a number of CPPA members, the fund continues to grow. The Silveira family has helped CPPA present hard working and dedicated pork producers who are pursuing a college education with financial assistance. The award will be given to the most qualified recipient and awarded at Pork Spectacular.

Funds shall be placed in an account at the school to be attended or attending.

Funds shall only be applied to school tuition, books, and supplies.

All or part of these funds may be used at any time during the academic year of award.

If the recipient fails to maintain a 2.5 overall GPA or a 3.0 GPA in major course study, the remaining funds shall be forfeited and returned to the scholarship fund.

If the recipient fails to maintain full time enrollment (12 or more units of credit), the remaining funds shall be forfeited and returned to the scholarship fund.

MARCH/APRIL 2019

CJLA NEWS & UPDATES 2019 is a milestone for the California Junior Livestock Association! We are celebrating 20 years! Watch for news from us as we plan some fun things in the months ahead!

can’t do it without you… and that is the truth! We are constantly reminded about how much YOU care about our youth and this junior livestock industry! It’s a great feeling!

The first few months of 2019 have zoomed by and the CJLA show season is in full swing!

The CJLA Rule Book is posted on the website and we recommend everyone print a copy for your reference! We would like to remind everyone that the CJLA Rules were made with an effort for fairness to all exhibitors and members. We have always been proud of our members and the way in which our livestock youth conduct themselves in life and in competition. With that said, Rule number 12 states that “In order for a CJLA member to exhibit and earn points in a sanctioned CJLA Showmanship contest, they must also enter and exhibit THAT ENTRY in the regular CJLA sanctioned classes offered for mkt lambs, wether dam ewes, mkt hogs, mkt goats, wether dam does, steers or heifers." This means you need to show your own entry in showmanship! It has been interesting that we have had some inquiries about this already this year so we felt we should address it here. We recognize it is nice to have a show broke animal to use in showmanship instead of a young animal that is just learning the ropes, but isn’t that part of the process? Shouldn’t it be more about bringing on the new recruit and training and taking them to new levels? To challenge yourself to see how good of a job you can do and then to be happy and rewarded for what you have accomplished? If this applies to you, or someone you know, or even if it doesn’t, take a few minutes to think about values and pride and doing things the right way. And think about how one person’s actions affect those around them, or how it would feel to be on the other end of someone doing something unfair.

As this issue arrives in your mailbox, many of you have already attended quite a few sanctioned shows and are looking for points to be posted. We get quite a few questions about that so I’ll explain what we do to keep things updated. By March 31st, there have been a total of 14 sanctioned shows held. THAT IS 63 INDIVIDUAL SPECIES REPORTS! THAT WE ARE PROCESSING FOR 300+ MEMBERS! Then you add in getting the reports from the shows. We give them a few weeks to get results sent to us so once they start coming in, there are a lot of reports to process all at once. Our point tabulator has a full time job and records points around her work schedule. So, the first of the year is very, very busy! But with that said, we do strive really hard to get points posted as quickly as possible because we know it is important to our members. It is easiest for us to record a group of shows and then run totals and then post that update. We plan these updates to coordinate with each issue of the Pacific Showcase magazine starting with the May/June issue, then the July/August, September/October, and November/December issue. Points are sent by E-blast to all our members and to anyone who has signed up to receive CJLA emails through the CJLA website. Please be sure to add cjlainfo@yahoo.com to your contacts so you receive our E-blasts! It is really important that you read our E-blasts because this is how we send any communications from CJLA throughout the year. The only letters we send through the post office are at the end of the year! We also post on the CJLA Facebook and Instagram pages and on the CJLA website. As much as we try to keep you informed, it is your responsibility to look at what you receive AND to contact us if you have any questions!

The CJLA is always open to comments and suggestions. If there is something you are wondering about, or would like to see added or changed, PLEASE CONTACT US! We need to hear from you in order to address any issues or questions. The CJLA is open to new ideas but it has to be feasible. We need our sanctioned shows willing to change; we need enough member participation to make it worthwhile for the shows to add something; and the CJLA needs enough member participation to justify the additional awards that would be required if a division was added.

If you have questions about points or shows or rules, contact us so we can help you! If you have questions about the points we post for you, CONTACT US RIGHT AWAY! It is so much easier for us to research your questions during the year instead of waiting until the end.

I think this is about all the news for now... so go full speed into the weeks and months ahead! Set new goals and work hard to achieve them! Be sure to enjoy the journey along the way! Stay safe, and be sure to thank your crew that helps you get it all done. And say Thanks to those awesome people who work so hard to put on those shows you attend!

On February 16th, we held our Annual Award Ceremony during the Western Bonanza Show weekend in Paso Robles. It was a special day of honoring the accomplishments of our 2018 members. We tried a new format this year where we announced our Division Winners ringside for each division. It worked out great and we appreciate all the wonderful feedback we have received! If you were not able to attend and did not get your awards picked up, we will be contacting you about getting them to you at an upcoming show or mailing them. All members were to receive a CJLA t-shirt and CJLA goodies. If you didn’t get those picked up, we can mail them – we just ask for a $5.00 donation to help cover our postage costs. To cover costs of mailing larger packages of awards, we can find out the shipping costs and let you know prior to shipping.

Be sure to print off the CJLA Rules and Sanctioned Show List from the website – and to follow the CJLA Facebook page and the CJLA Instagram page for updates and news. Check out all the Sanctioned Shows on the Upcoming Events page too! Happy Trails! CJLA Questions? Emails can be sent to cjlainfo@yahoo.com or through the CJLA website: www.cjlainfo.com Heidi Beljean: 408-888-2503 or pacshow@earthlink.net (CJLA Info, Memberships, & Sponsorships)

In the next issue of this magazine, we will have the full highlights of the Award Ceremony! And we want to say a special Thank You to all our generous sponsors, donors, supporters, parents, families, and CJLA members for everything YOU do to make this organization and this award presentation a success. Every year we say we

AY SOUND. T S . D OUN LubriSyn | HA Topical

Advanced wound gel with hyaluronic acid is a safe, natural, general-use topical wound spray for horses, livestock, and pets. LubriSynHA Topical aids in the mechanical removal of dirt debris and foreign material by the action of the wound cleanser moving across the wound bed or application site with or without the assistance of a suitable wound dressing.

Re-Borne

LubriSyn | HA

Whole Bovine Colostrum

is nature’s solution to total animal health. Our colostrum is sourced from Grade A dairies and sterilized in its whole state. It is never heat processed or broken down to degrade valuable constituents. When used as a supplement, Re-Borne supports muscle health, weight gain, intestinal health, and greater endurance in horses,

The only active ingredient in LubriSyn LVS is hyaluronan! Hyaluronan (HA) is naturally found in their body as part of synovial fluid, the viscous substance that cushions and lubricates their joints. Synovial fluid allows two adjacent cartilage caps to glide upon one another with minimal friction.
