EDITOR It’s official! Spring has sprung! Grass is growing and flowers are blooming. Thank God for the rain we have received. We still need more, but what has come so far has been a blessing! Spring is a sign of all the activities that lie ahead. 4-H and FFA contests are in full swing, Jackpots are scheduled for every weekend, county fairs are starting up, sports practices and games fill many hours in the weekly calendars. Your minds and hands can be on overload when so much is going on. Not just for the juniors, but for parents, too.

Family times, where everyone is together, are few and far between. In the hustle and bustle of daily business, it’s easy to pass by without taking time to interact. The time spent driving somewhere is a good time to catch up. Even if it is just to and from school or practice or meetings, be sure to talk, ask questions, share some laughs, and BE TOGETHER! Children need to know that mom and dad are there for them, their rock to lean on. And parents need that time with their kids, to hold them close and share in their lives. That is one exciting aspect of our junior livestock shows. Family and extended family, friends, and teammates, all sharing time together. It’s pretty special and those memories will last a lifetime.

I have often talked about the opportunities that await our youth outside of California at the major shows throughout the United States. How being able to compete with some of the best in the business, on those huge stages, is an experience that will help a person improve, expand their world, create new contacts and friendships, and open doors as they venture into the adult world.

In the months ahead, you have all the Junior National Breed Association Shows for cattle, World Pork Expo and NJSA shows across the states, and it’s not too far out to think about those major fall shows – American Royal and Louisville. And from there it’s just a short leap to Arizona National and the National Western Livestock Show. If hitting the “majors” is something you would love to do, I suggest you talk to those you know who have been there. They can give you lots of tips and insights that will help you prepare, and tell you what it is like to go. I always say, “Broaden your horizons! Challenge yourself!”

With Spring come the notices and letters from colleges. Yes, for those seniors who are anxiously waiting to hear if they have been accepted, this is what you have prepared for since you were little. Tons of school work, applications, and hopes and prayers have gone into preparing to get that letter from the college you dreamed of attending. I am so proud of each of you who are on the verge of the next level in your education and in your life. I have watched many of you from the time you attended your first show, enjoying your success over the years, and seeing you become the fine young person you are today. Choose a college that will help you best prepare for a career you want some day. If you aren’t sure of the exact field you want to work in, choose a college that has different areas of your major and then challenge yourself. I have seen many posts from kids who have gotten into their college of choice! What a great time in your life – enjoy it!!

As a CJLA member, you join a great group of young people who are dedicated to raising and showing livestock. From first level to advanced, there is a place for everyone! The CJLA believes all participants in this program are equally important - therefore it is our goal to recognize and reward every member for their hard work and achievements throughout the year. Points are tabulated from January through December. The annual Award Banquet is then held for members, their families, and CJLA supporters.

Market animal DNA COLLECTION -
Process Allows Junior Exhibitors to Collect Their First Samples
Exhibitors wishing to enter their market animals (including market steers, market sheep, market barrows, market goats, crossbred gilts and wether dam wether sire sheep) in the Junior Livestock show at the 2016 State Fair must first register for the DNA Reservation and Collection online at www.castatefair.org/2016-junior-livestock Upon registration, the exhibitor will receive a collection kit to be used for the hair sample collection process. NO Market Animal will be eligible for official entry unless this sample is obtained and an official Market Registration Form has been completed. All samples will be collected by the exhibitor and a parent or leader (NO EXCEPTIONS). Your cancelled check and/or postage receipt will serve as your receipt. You will not receive notification from the California State Fair upon receipt of your sample. PLEASE NOTE: This process does not enter your animal into the 2016 California State Fair, it is only a part of the necessary requirements you will need for the market division. All animals are required to be officially entered by the owner, pay the entry fee and do so by the official entry deadline June 8, 2016. Failure to comply with the following deadlines shall result in disqualification for competition in the 2016 California State Fair. NEWS & UPDATES! As you are reading this article it is about the middle of March – a few weeks away from when I was sitting at my computer writing it! The annual CJLA Award Banquet was held 2 weeks ago on February 13th and it was an awesome night! Honoring the 2015 members and award recipients was the highlight of the evening. We had a great turn-out that was enjoyed by everyone there. In the next issue, we will have a complete feature on all the big news of that night, but right now we want to say a HUGE THANK YOU to all our generous sponsors, donors, supporters, parents, families, and CJLA members for everything YOU do to make this organization and this banquet a success. Every year we say we can’t do it without you… and that is the truth! We are constantly reminded about how much YOU care about our youth and this junior livestock industry! It’s a great feeling!

We do very little paper mail (except at the end of the year) to save on costs so it is really important that you read our e-blasts, check the CJLA website, and read this magazine for all the news and updates regarding CJLA. The 2016 CJLA Rule Book has been emailed to members and posted on the website. We encourage you to print off a copy for your reference. All the sanctioned shows are also posted on the CJLA website calendar (www.cjlainfo.com).

We have not divided the divisions by age, or the cattle divisions by breed or color in this list, just by specie – Heifer Division, Steer Division, Lamb Division, Hog Division, and Goat Division. Check out the Sanctioned Show List below! There have been a couple of shows cancelled so you might need to rethink your show plans. There are still a lot of shows in the coming months all the way through the end of the year. Remember that your top eight shows count for year-end totals but the tie breakers for both division and showmanship are the number of shows you earned points at in that division. It often happens at the end of the year that placings change based on this tie-breaker rule! So keep on trucking and keep on showing!

Scholarships Available to Angus Youth
Prepare for May deadlines, and apply for Angus Foundation and American Angus Auxiliary scholarship opportunities. The American Angus Association strives to provide students with opportunities to benefit themselves and the future of the cattle business.

Each state auxiliary is eligible to submit one male and one female application to the national contest. The winners will be announced during the 2016 NJAS closing ceremonies.
Through scholarship programs offered through the Angus Foundation and the American Angus Auxiliary, Angus youth passionate about the beef industry are provided financial support to further their education. Current high school seniors and college students should take note of the deadlines and details for each scholarship program listed below.

The Angus Foundation offers general scholarships to students pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees in higher education. Eligible Angus youth meeting the qualifications for the Angus Foundation’s 2016 Undergraduate and Graduate Scholarship Programs will be considered by the Angus Foundation’s Scholarship Selection Committee. As in past years, other specific and special criteria scholarships administered by the Angus Foundation will also be available. Scholarship recipients will be recognized at the 2016 National Junior Angus Show (NJAS) in Grand Island, Neb.
The application for American Angus Auxiliary Scholarships is also available online. Interested junior Angus members who are high school seniors may download the application, access directions and general information through the scholarship section of the Auxiliary website.Applications from the state contact must be postmarked by May 2. A long-standing scholarship awarded through the Angus Foundation is the $1,000 Certified Angus Beef LLC (CAB)/National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) Scholarship. Applicants must have at one time been an NJAA member and must currently be a junior, regular or life member of the American Angus Association, along with being an incoming sophomore, junior or senior in college majoring in animal science, meat science, food science, agricultural communications or a related field of academic study. A recipient will be honored at NJAS in July.

Interesting News from the Animal Agriculture and Antibiotics: 7 Things to Consider
4. There is a lack of new antibiotics in development, both for humans and animals. While antibiotic resistance doesn’t appear to be preventing vets from treating sick animals, it remains “a continual concern,” according to Coffey. “We don’t see a whole lot of development of new animal health drugs. It’s important in that environment that we take care of the ones that we have.”
The issue of antibiotic use in animal agriculture raises more than a few big questions, both inside and outside the ag community.
Why is the pipeline so limited? Three reasons, according to Kathy Talkington, who leads The Pew Charitable Trust’s antibiotic resistance project.
How much–or how few—antibiotics should be given to food animals? Who should be making those decisions—farmers, veterinarians, policymakers, doctors, food and restaurant companies, or consumers? How will we know what are truly best practices for animal health and human health? “In all this conversation about antimicrobial resistance, we tend to get a little insular in our thinking,” said Jerome Lyman, speaking at the Farm Foundation Forum on antibiotic use in animal agriculture. “Whether we come from the medical profession, the animal health profession (or) we are producers, we are regulators, we write public policy, I think it's helpful to think a little bit from the point of view of a consumer. What I can share with you is that the consumer is pretty confused about this whole issue and … we are all at least partly to blame because we got stuck in our own circles and forgot to understand that what we are really dealing with here is the integrity and the perception of the food consumers eat, especially in the area of animal protein.”

First, there are scientific barriers—it’s difficult to create new antibiotics.
•
Second, there are regulatory hurdles in getting a drug approved for market and in the case of animal agriculture, worries about the drug’s usage impacting export demand.
•
Third, there are economic obstacles—pharmaceutical companies may decide that a potential new
antibiotic doesn’t offer enough return on investment and stop developing the drug. 5. There are, unfortunately, a lot of unknowns about the existence, volume, and quality of data already collected about the use of antibiotics in animal agriculture.
Lyman, a former vice president at McDonald’s Corp., where he oversaw the fast-food giant’s global quality systems, joined speakers from the agriculture, policy, and regulatory communities at the Washington, D.C., event.
As producers, policymakers, and veterinarians alike try to establish what best practices should be, some are finding gaps in the detailed information they seek. “How can we get better data?” asked one attendee. “We are left with sales data rather than use data.” Others see the situation differently. “There’s a lot of data,” said Coffey. “There’s a lot more data than there is information.”
How can Ag and others move forward on the complicated issue of antibiotics in animal agriculture? Here are seven factors influencing the issue, based on the discussion among the panelists and attendees.
6. Producers large and small—and their suppliers and vets-are facing potential record-keeping challenges in implementing the new veterinary feed directive.
1. Customers are increasingly asking for meat that is antibiotic-free and more.
Issued in 2015, this new rule covers animal drugs that are administered through animal feed, under the care of a vet. It is also likely to result in new processes, paperwork and perhaps data investments for vets and producers alike, which could be challenging for smaller ranchers and especially small independent feed retailers. “If this is too complicated, will those people just get out of the business of providing those important tools to that segment of the industry?” Coffey asked. “What would that mean for their livelihoods going forward?”
“It’s not an issue of no (antibiotic) residue,” said M. Terry Coffey, Ph.D., chief science and technology officer at Smithfield’s Hog Production Division. “It’s an issue of being raised without antibiotics.” Consumers also want antibiotic-free meat to be produced without growth promotants, without gestation crates, and with vegetarian feed, he said. ‘You are seeing a bundling of how animals might be raised tagging along with the ‘no antibiotics’” priority.
7. There needs to be greater collaboration and stronger relationships among those involved in the overlapping arenas of antimicrobial resistance, antibiotics and animal agriculture.
Is that economically viable? It all depends on how much consumers— and how many of those consumers—are willing to pay.
“There’s a tremendous amount of players … and not everyone approaches this from the same standpoint,” Solomon said. “There’s certainly a lack of trust.” That will have to change if producers, policy makers, and others are going to effectively address the antibiotic question.
2. Activist shareholders are influencing companies’ food supply chain decisions. From Panera moving to cage-free eggs to Perdue’s announcement it would reduce its antibiotic use, such shifts are often influenced by public pressure. “Boards of directors that ignore shareholder activism do so at their own peril,” said Jerome Lyman, a former vice president at McDonald’s, where he oversaw the fast-food giant’s global quality systems. What else is behind food and restaurant companies’ choice to drop GMOs or move to organic ingredients? The need to make marketdriven decisions ahead of everyone else in the industry. “If you are behind the curve in a competitive environment, you have already lost,” Lyman said.

Exhibitors of All Pigs Going to Exhibits or Sales With the animals being commingled at an exhibition, show or sale, spreading disease is a risk. The recommendations listed apply to all swine at an exhibit or sale that are physically on the premise. Having a plan in place to identify and handle sick animals properly will help reduce the chance of disease spread. In preparation for the exhibit or sale: Consult a veterinarian to understand and implement applicable biosecurity and swine health practices; keep the veterinarian’s phone number in your barn with your pig’spapers and if possible, in your cell phone. Have a premises identification number for your farm or where the pig(s) are housed (required for PQA Plus® certification or state equivalent) Utilize an individual, readable identification method for each pig: • Individual identification helps accurately and quickly identify a pig in the event of a health issue, validation of ownership or for other exhibit needs; papers can get lost or misplaced, but individual identification will remain with the pig • Refer to the exhibit organizers and the State Veterinarian for specific requirements for individual animal identification Become familiar with the clinical signs of a sick pig (such as fever, off-feed, lethargy, nasal discharge, cough, “thumping” or hard time breathing, and diarrhea). • Include information for exhibit-specific requirements • If requested, list any current vaccines the pig has received (i.e. influenza or PRRS) and current disease testing (i.e. PRRS; PRV) At the exhibition or sale: • Assess your pigs’ health on a daily basis • Report any swine health issues Animals like cats and dogs can carry to the exhibit organizer (i.e. swine pathogens that can make pigs sick. It is imsuperintendent) or show veteriportant to prevent the spread of pathogens narian so they can assess the pig to your pigs or to others. Keep pets at home, do not let them be in contact with your pigs in question and do not bring them to the exhibit. • Ask the exhibition organizer about any specific actions that may be required if a pig becomes sick at the show. • Keep your area clean and free of manure contamination • Do not share equipment with other exhibitors • Do not bring your pets (cats or dogs) at the exhibit Once you get home: When pigs from different farms are brought to an exhibit or sale and commingled with other pigs of a different health status, the risk of catching a disease can be high. Just like people can spread illness to each other when gathered in a group, pigs from many locations in an exhibit can also spread illness to each other. Therefore, when you bring your pig back home from an exhibit or sale, it is best to place them in isolation. Isolate returning pigs from the other pigs at your farm. • Work with your veterinarian for an isolation plan. The isolation/observation period before returning to contact with other pigs should be no fewer than 7-30 days in order to detect an illness. • Consult a veterinarian if your pig becomes ill. • Clean and disinfect equipment, clothing, shoes, show box and contents, and vehicles/trailers that were used at the exhibition. Clean-up can be as simple as washing, disinfecting and allowing your equipment to dry out in the sun. Clean and dry equipment will help to prevent the spread of pathogens. Recommendations for isolation: (if you have other pigs at your farm) • Isolation will allow for time for pigs to be observed for disease after they return from an exhibition or sale. When pigs are in isolation, additional testing can be complete to check for diseases before pigs are added back to the rest of the farm (e.g. PRRS). Check with your veterinarian for testing recommendations. • Have a designated area away from other pigs that have not been to a show. • Do chores for the pigs in the isolation area as the last task of the day after you have already worked with your other pigs. • Have dedicated boots and coveralls for isolation only. Another option is to use disposable coveralls and plastic boots for use in isolation and then thrown away when done in isolation. • Have a separate trash can for use in isolation only. • Supplies such as buckets and feed pans should not be shared between pigs in isolation and other animals. • All equipment should be thoroughly cleaned, disinfected and allowed to dry after use in the isolation area.
Friends Of The California State Fair Offer Money For College Friends of the California State Fair will begin accepting scholarship applications today for the 2016-2017 academic school year. The application is available at www.CAStateFair.org. Scholarships will be awarded in the following areas: agriculture, animal science, arts, business, culinary, education, enology, event planning, fair industry management, international studies, teaching and viticulture.

The Friends of the Fair Scholarship Program was initiated in 1993 and is a collaborative effort of the Friends of the California State Fair, the California Exposition & State Fair and the California State Fair Agricultural Advisory Council. Major yearly contributors to the fund include Ironstone Concours d’Elegance Foundation, Blue Diamond Growers, Western Fairs Association, California Milk Advisory Board and Bob & Beverly Gilbert.
This program seeks to motivate well-rounded, high academic achievers that will be enrolled in a four-year accredited college/university, community college or trade school program in the state of California for the 2016-2017 school year. Applications are due Thursday, March 3, 2016. Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of personal commitment, goals established for their chosen field, leadership potential and civic accomplishments. All applicants are also eligible for
