FROM THE

EDITOR Before I sat down to write this final editorial of 2020, I took some time and looked back at what I wrote for this issue in the past few years. I love this fall and winter season – it is a time to be grateful and celebrate the past months and to share special times with those we love and cherish. It is also a time to look forward to what the New Year holds for us.

P.O. Box 41430 • San Jose, CA 95160 (408) 888-2503

We all know that 2020 has been like no year we’ve ever seen! My review of past editorials found me counting my many blessings and excitement for the New Year ahead. Right now I can honestly say I am still counting my many blessings. I truly have so much to be grateful for as I rejoice in those blessings and the love I have for my wonderful family and the friends. When I need to talk, or need encouragement, and a lifting of my spirit, someone is always here, or just a phone call away to bring me hope and joy! How lucky am I?

Publisher & Managing Editor: Heidi Beljean — (408) 888-2503 Email: pacshow@earthlink.net Production Manager & Art Director: William Crump — (662) 305-5434 Email: pacificshowcase@gmail.com

Another thing I often talked about was getting ready for new projects. The excitement of planning and selecting and setting goals for that next best prospect is thrilling! That never changes! 2020 saw COVID-19 throw a big monkey wrench in a lot of plans. Jackpots got cancelled, county fairs got cancelled. Sports and school and literally everything saw big changes and everyone had to make adjustments. By now, we are all pretty much used to what we are dealing with and how we are getting along from day to day. I know it’s’ not what we want, but I think it’s important to not be mad, but to stay positive and see what we can do in a positive way. This year saw County Fairs hustling to do what they could for their exhibitors who already had market animals at home aimed at exhibiting and selling at their fair. We should all commend those fairs that planned a virtual show and junior livestock auction for those exhibitors. They worked hard to get buyers and sponsors and do as much as they could to be sure everyone would have a good outcome. This hard work was reflected in most auctions realizing excellent sale prices for the animals consigned and in a lot of cases, extra funds to add on to each exhibitor. So now 2021 is on the horizon and we all wonder what is in store for those county fairs. I know a couple have already announced plans to hold virtual shows. I know the first reaction is to complain. Why can’t they have live shows? How come they can have some other event there? Etc., etc. Before we start talking negative, let’s think of some positives. Most fairs went above and beyond this year to make something happen for the kids. Can they do it again for 2021? Can they afford to? Who is going to step in and help make it happen? Something is better than nothing! Fairgrounds have a lot more to deal with than just the livestock show. Can they make their finances work and keep the facility alive? I know that is their ultimate goal and if they can make that happen, at least there will still be a fairground to have a county fair at in another year or so. Isn’t that the best scenario? Let’s focus on not losing our fairgrounds!

ABOUT THE

COVER

In 2012, the Hourets sold their interest in STG to Tim and Tom Johnson. In 2016, John Anderson joined the team as our herdsman. John brought a new perspective to the operations and helped STG finetune its breeding program. In 2018, we purchased the sow herd from Mid-West Genetics. The acquisition positioned us to take a significant leap forward. One recent example is the great Cardi-B gilt, who tore up the show circuit for the Souza family. Not only did we retain Cardi-B, but we retained a significant number of gilts from the Mid-West sows, many of which never saw the show ring. The strategy to retain these gilts is quickly proving to be a great decision.

Twenty years ago, Small Town Genetics, LLC (STG) was created. I never imagined the crazy yet rewarding path this business would create. On a scratch piece of paper, along with our original partners Paul and Kathy Houret, Kara and I jotted down a vision for STG. Then we went to work. The foundation of STG was 20 crossbred sows from my high school project and 30 purebred York gilts purchased from Lorenzen Farms. We built from our foundation and have focused on continuous improvement. We broke through and bred our first national champion in 2009. A boar rightfully named Paparazzi, sold to Lean Value Sires for $52,000. The win was great, but as a hog breeder the real reward was to witness the mark Paparazzi left on the show pig industry. Paparazzi sired countless champions, but he would best be known for his son, Swagger. 2009 also landed our first junior national champion. Caleb Johnson exhibited the supreme barrow at the Arizona Nationals. Our biggest junior win would come a few short years later, in 2014, when the Guyer girls exhibited the champion crossbred barrow at the World Pork Expo. And the list of

Most importantly, over the past 20 years we have been blessed to work with the greatest people around. There is absolutely no better way to raise a kid than in the show ring. 2020 has tested that statement and has proven it to be true. STG was built on hard work, integrity, and resilience. With the uncertainty of 2020, we are certain about one thing: The Comeback Is Greater Than The Setback. God Bless. Stay safe. And see you in the barns!

CJLA NEWS & UPDATES showing experiences for you and those you know.

AS we wrap up 2020, it has been an unusual year for sure. Covid-19 has changed so many things for everyone and the CJLA has been no exception. The livestock community has done a fantastic job of picking up and forging ahead – and planning for next year – 2021!

We will be happy to talk further with anyone who is interested in donating and being a sponsor. Let us know and we will contact them! Are you wondering about the CJLA Award Ceremonies coming up? We are still planning to present awards during the Western Bonanza in February. We have been talking to them to work out details. It may look a bit different than past years as their show format changes and we work with their schedule. We will keep you updated as plans progress!

In this issue you will find the 2021 Jackpot Breakdown! Check it out! It is amazing and inspiring to see how many shows are making plans to hold their events! And check out the California List – WE HAVE SEVERAL NEW SHOWS ADDED! This is so exciting! Our livestock community is resilient – and dedicated for our kids who love to raise and show animals! WOW!!!

ONE MORE THING I WANT TO MENTION: Please be sure to read the emails and E-Blasts we send out! Postage is really costly for us and so we do most of our communication through E-Blasts. Take the time to open and read them! And ask your friends if they saw the email – share the word and more people will see them. I know everyone is bombarded with emails and sometimes things get missed, so sharing helps get the news out there.

We have been asked about sanctioning virtual shows. With so much interest and support in continuing to hold live events, it has been decided not to sanction virtual shows in CJLA. CJLA believes it is important to hold with our format of providing live events where kids can practice and show the projects they are raising. ALSO IN THIS ISSUE IS THE NEW 2021 CJLA MEMBERSHIP FORM! CHECK OUT THE CHANGES!! WE HAVE MOVED THE DATE TO “JOIN BY” TO JUNE 1st and lowered the age to join from age 9 to age 8! Points will begin once we receive your application and payment. Points will not be awarded retroactively. If you go to shows before you join, those shows would not count for points. You can fill it out and mail in with payment or go to the CJLA website and fill out the online membership and pay there. This year 98% of our memberships were done through the website and it worked out great!

As 2020 closes, take time to be thankful for the good and positive things that have happened over the past 12 months. Be thankful for what you have and look forward to making 2021 even better. We will see you down the road! CJLA Questions? Emails can be sent to cjlainfo@yahoo.com or through the CJLA website: www.cjlainfo.com Heidi Beljean: 408-888-2503 or pacshow@earthlink.net (CJLA Info, Memberships, & Sponsorships)

We have mailed everyone a Sponsor Packet. The awards given out each year are made possible by donations. Now more than ever, the CJLA needs everyone’s help to reach our goals of providing awards to our members! PLEASE share your packet with those you think would be interested in helping the CJLA! Take some time to share your CJLA story – why you are a member and what CJLA provides in

Dear Friend of the CJLA, 2020 marks 21 years since the inception of the California Junior Livestock Association. It began as a dream to unite kids who love to show livestock with adults and groups who wanted to provide show and educational experiences for them. Today the CJLA boasts an annual membership of over 350 members who compete in Steer, Heifer, Market Hog, Market Sheep, Market Goat, Wether Dam Ewe and Wether Dam Doe Divisions. They have the opportunity to exhibit at 30-plus sanctioned shows held throughout the state from January through December. From beginning level to the most advanced presentation, CJLA strives to offer positive experiences for everyone. It has provided a venue for our young members to showcase their passions and commitment to excellence in the show ring, in school, and in their daily lives. Our members love what they do. They love to raise and show livestock. From selecting a certain animal, setting goals, and working hard, to competing in show rings up and down the state, CJLA kids are up to the challenge. But it’s more than time in the ring — it is time with family, making friends, and building memories that will last a lifetime. The California Junior Livestock Association has become the cornerstone of the junior livestock scene in our state. Our focus is on providing members with opportunities for recognition as they set and attain new goals, expand their animal husbandry skills and industry knowledge, and compete with their cattle, sheep, hogs, and goats in competitive events. Every member is honored at the annual Award Ceremony, and the top exhibitors in each division are awarded prizes for their achievements. In addition to earning awards for exhibiting their animal projects, members can also enter other CJLA contests. The Weaver Leather Essay Contest and the Dave Spaulding Memorial Scholarship appeal to our youngest to oldest members. The CJLA continually strives to offer something for all our members and we are excited for the new events planned for this year, and into the future! Our upcoming Award Ceremonies, recognizing the achievements of our 2020 members, will be held February 13, 2021 at the Mid-State Fairgrounds in Paso Robles, CA. Cal Poly’s Western Bonanza Junior Livestock Show is also taking place this weekend at the fairgrounds and many of our members and their families will be attending both events. We are planning our Award Presentations at each show-ring during the day so all attendees can watch our members receiving their awards. In order to reach our goal of providing special awards to all our members, the CJLA relies completely on the generosity of those who share our belief in the future of our youth and the future of agriculture. CJLA members are the leaders and bright stars of tomorrow who use the skills they learn today in their future endeavors. Your sponsorship will help the CJLA give awards that can be used in our members’ future projects, education, and careers. Large or small, all contributions go directly back to our members and help to ensure the success of our award program. You can help us keep our vision alive through your support. Please read through the enclosed sponsor information. Several levels of support are offered and you can choose where you want your donation applied. To make a contribution to CJLA, please fill out and return the enclosed form or you may go to the CJLA website – www.cjlainfo.com and use our PayPal service. If you have any questions at all, please contact me directly at (408) 888-2503. The CJLA truly values your support, but more importantly, our junior members and their families appreciate it! We promise to put your contribution to good use. Thank you for your consideration of our request. Sincerely,

eidi Beljean HHeidi Beljean CJLA Chairman NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2020
